(Besitze Victoria revolutions)

An alle anderen: nicht kaufen. Bitte ebenso Paradox DLC Politik boykottieren.

Strategy game. Not so easy to play, but might be more from being earlier in Paradox's releases. Time period is post-Napoleonic up through the First World War. In theory, could lead into a Heart of Iron campaign. Decent enough.

    I really like Victoria 2.

It's one of my most played and one of my favorite games.

Victoria 1 is everything Victoria 2 would have been if it was a poorly designed game with a shitty UI and without flexibility. You can't even play countries like Austria, for some reason. I am utterly baffled by that.

I had some fun, but I really only bothered because of my adoration of the sequel.

A remaster might do the job, but knowing Paradox it wouldn't fix the core issues with Victoria 1 and the devs literally don't even remember how Victoria 2's economy and systems were made, so my doubts are high as to whether it's even doable.

Reviewing games I played a long time ago:

Ignore the playtime, I played this A LOT before buying it on Steam. I really like this historic period and I was a big, big fan of the classic Imperialism game from the 90's. Victoria is the closest thing to that, so I was easily charmed by it. Although it's a bit too focused on boring micromanagement, I think it's quite distint from the classic Europa Universalis and offers a very different challenge less focused on expantion and war, and more on economics.

I first got this game on disc when it came out in 2003 as Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun. From the first, I was intrigued and entranced by the workings of this game. I liked the fact that back then, it was one of the first comprehensive strategic World War I simulations you could find that was somewhat realistic. But war isn't the only thing cool about this game. You can start as any country beginning in 1836 going through 1920. Like all Paradox games, you have research tracks and trajectories to go on, and depending on the country and the track you take, it can lead to some interesting outcomes. There is a budget you have to balance, but if you don't, you can borrow in increments of 1,000 pounds from the theoretical bank. Borrow too much and you'll go broke because you can't afford the interest within your daily expenses. Part of the research investment, of course, is military development, and you have to keep up with your neighbors if you don't want your military units to get their butts' kicked. A necessary part of the game is trade. You have to build factories, staff them, promote and educate people, convert them to necessary positions, then buy and sell the goods your country needs on the open world market. This early version of building factories and staffing them in Victoria I is inferior to that designed by Paradox for Victoria II. It's difficult at times to manage. One aspect of the game that you really have no control over is public opinion, although the game instructions imply you do so by the amount you tax people and by how you use them within the economy. You are also supposed to be able to placate public opinion by spending on social services and a developing modern day safety net. Trust me, it doesn't placate public opinion. If the AI has decided the people of your country are upset at you and are on the way toward revolting, they are going to ultimately revolt until you change the type of government you have to one more liberal and democratic. I guess this is probably faithful to historical dialectic. Regardless, this is an excellent game if you are looking to learn about how 19th century politics worked and how the Imperial powers managed their empires up and until World War I.

Way too much clicking. No real in game tutorials to speak of. No obvious way to manage things effectively. Following the instructions (or so I understood), can't even load troops on boats. The budget vs. income / expense didn't really seem to line up. I could write more, but I've already spent enough time on this.

Don't be decieved by the hours shown, I've sunk many, many hours into Vicky. I even printed off a well thumbed manual, reams of paper...those were good old days. It sits on the same game engine as EU and HOI but its gameplay is totally different with the whole concept of pops being genius. It also tackles the 19th Century in a new and intriguing way and as always with Paradox games, it deepened my understanding of this period's history. My only caveat is that there are a number of key provinces and if you know them then you can position yourself to stomp.

If you've not played Victoria 2 then I'd expect a strategy gamer to enjoy it having got to grips with the usual complex gameplay mechanics. But Vicky 2 is just better, so if you've already played V2, I would keep my wallet in my pocket. But if you pick it up in a bundle, you might want to give a few hours to see for yourself how the developers moved the game forward. Now, what would they do with Vicky 3 I wonder?

I have to say, this isn't an easy game, it is also quite time consuming (time literally flies when you are playing) but when you start winning it is highly rewarding (kinda the way Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are). It is made in order to make difficult for the player to prevent the history repeating over again (or going worse for the country you are playing with).

While instructions would be nice, the internet is vast and has quite a few explanations and tutorials.

Yeah, it's an old game, graphics are not impressive at all, but really, who cares? it's not the point of this game. Also as your processor doesn't work much, you can play quite a few hours on your laptop before running out of battery, which is nice.

I totally recommend it, it's worth every dollar and you get tons of hours of gameplay due to it's almost infinite replayability.

Only advice: don't get frustrated if you get your ass kicked several times, you'll learn more and more each time.

Victoria 1 complete is a game which I only aquired through the Victoria bundle and was not the reason for which I choose to buy the bundle. However since buying this game I am happy to say it was not a waste of time or money to do so. The first thing I would like to point out is the fact this game is not ment for the casual gamer there is deep stratagy involved within, economically and also in the combat system.

A strong feature of this particular game is the combat system it is complex however simple to grasp at base level for a better understanding some games will have to be played, or articles and tutorials will have to be delved into. However don't depend upon your militaristic skills for global domination the game might have a few nasty suprises in store for 'badboys' as it is known in game. The greatness of this game is that econimic management can be done quickly if required but fine tuneing is applicable whenever you are not amist a conquest so there is allways something to do.

However I will admit that the diplomacy compared to Victoria 2 is much weaker and not as intresting to undergo and power difficult to obtain through the system in place, also some may find the graphics ugly and old fasioned which they are but I assure you you will get used to them and find a unique appeal if you give it time.

The ability to play as any nation in the world across 4 diffrent starting points adds a lot of replayabilty into this game from either remaining a global power or starting from scratch and building a new economic and military superpower for the world to fear.

Militarist or economist? New or old power? The world can be your oyster but can you make it?
