The gameplay seems fun if you just focus on individual rooms but when you have to react quickly to moving fast between different rooms its just annoying and the camera teleports between rooms so fast and its so hard to read. Not to mention that oyu have to lead victoria through shit and its just so annoying. Exept for that it was pretty good tho.

Honestly, I could never remember if it’s 6 Vs or 7. There were plenty of other things I forgot about this little platforming gem in the decade since I last played it, but the name is definitely the hardest part to stick. I can’t overstate how glad I am I revisited it, though, because VVVVVV is one of the best balances of challenge and chill you can get from indie platformers. It can confound and mystify without frustrating, and always offers you something new to do if you’ve come across a particularly tricky section. And even if you do find yourself starting to fume, the thick layer of charm laid on by the adorable characters and retro stylings is sure to put you back in your comfort zone.

It’s a disaster…IN SPAAAAAACE! Captain Viridian’s ship has crashed in an unknown sector of the universe, and his crew has been scattered by a mysterious disruption. It’s up to him to reunite the team and figure out what the heck happened to the ship, and fortunately, he’s the perfect person to do it. Not only does he have a winning smile and a can-do attitude, he can also flip his personal gravity at will. That’ll prove invaluable when facing the twisting corridors and yawning voids of this enigmatic place. Each new challenge will push him in different and unexpected ways, and ultimately lead to some big revelations about where his ship ended up, and where it’s going.

VVVVVV has a perfectly serviceable story for the kind of game it is, a framework to hang fantastical platforming and exploration upon. There are terminals dotted about that give a little more context to the story beats that happen from time to time, but again, plumbing the depths of this strange space is the real attraction here. The map is wide open, with a vast Super Metroid-esque landscape sprawling in all directions just outside your ship. From here, tunnels and passageways lead to more discrete sections that present thematic challenges like moving platforms, edge-wrapping mazes, and a particularly harrowing tower ascent. Your crew tends to be tucked away at the ass-ends of each of these areas, and each adds their own little colorful observations about the predicament you find yourself in.

The platforming is the real star of the show here, because it takes a wonderfully Bionic Commando approach to powerful yet limited mobility. All you can do is run left, run right, or reverse your own gravity while on solid ground. With no discrete ability to jump, a single-tile obstruction can be a greater obstacle than a yawning laser-filled chasm if there’s no clear way to gravity-flip over it. And trust me, the game makes incredible use of this dynamic in all of its areas. Platforming takes on a whole new dimension here, with ceilings becoming just as important as floors and nominally simple jumps turning into an entire process when you can only flip around the extremes of the problem. Some of the challenges are infamous, such as a multi-screen ascent and descent through a spiked gauntlet just to clear a tiny ankle-high wall.

Most importantly, though, is that nothing here is particularly stressful. Aided by the simple, charming art style, VVVVVV is ultimately a very inviting game, even when facing you with a twisting passage of death. Checkpoints are dotted practically every other screen, and retries are instantaneous, meaning you can fling yourself to your doom as much as you want and waste very little time doing it. The hardest challenges are also reserved for the optional collectibles scattered across the world, and even then don’t reach the same heights as some modern metroidvanias in difficulty. A wealth of fast-travel teleporters on top of all this makes it clear that this game can be taken at your pace, as far as you want, as long as you’re having fun with it.

That was the biggest feeling that flooded back to me when I replayed VVVVVV recently, just how outright fun the whole thing is. I never got stuck anywhere, never raged at any of the challenges, and always had a huge smile on my face when I rescued one of my wayward crewmates. I don’t want to hear any complaints about the pixel art, because the clean lines and stark colors really help emphasize the platforming. The sound design is a perfect match to the retro feel, with big boops and beeps that I love (and I cannot lie). VVVVVV is regarded as a classic for good reason, offering timeless challenge and exploration without ever really pushing you out of that cozy, comfortable space.

It's a classic. For how old it is, it's quite good and for how the price is low, provides enough content (and achievements) for you to be stuck with it for quite some time. :)
Buy it. It's not gonna hurt your wallet.

One of the peak indie platformers during the indie boom 10 years ago.

I played it back when it was new and was blown away then. The gameplay is super tight, satisfying and hard in a fair way. You control the character by flipping gravity up and down instead of jumping. It works surprisingly well and is used in fun ways. The graphics are simple and atmospheric. The music is absolutely killer and practically assembles the style and feel of the game on its own.

For a few bucks, this is a no brainer. Get it. Play it. Hum the main songs forever.

Easily one of the best indie games of all time. It has such a simple concept but it does so much with the idea, it's a platformer except instead of jumping you flip gravity instead.

I'm not sure if I would consider it a metroidvania because you don't get upgrades in this game but the map is very similar to that of a metroidvania, you can go any direction you want and choose with shipmates to save first. The main objectives of the game are to rescue the 6 crew members all who have gotten lost behind a series of platforming challenges and let me say this game has some pretty hard ones in it. I spent upwards of 40 minutes trying to get a certain trinket in this game (this game's collectibles) and it was driving me crazy. I honestly don't recommend going for all the trinkets if you're playing this game for the first time, just go for the shipmates and you'll have more fun with it, just chill out to the awesome soundtrack and the normal campaign is a breeze.

It's a quintissential indie game, it's definitely a modern classic in my eyes and I recommend it if you're looking for a challenge.

Played this a ton on 3DS growing up and practically memorized all of it. This is the idyllic example of a very short game with very high replay value. It's comforting for me to just sit down and play through it all over again in about half an hour or so, at this point I'm probably really disconnected from the experience of the original playthrough.

There isn't a single part of the game that drags or feels obnoxious to go through again to me aside from a couple of the optional trinkets. Every stage in this game is super creative and it has a banger soundtrack. Most of the time it's a lot less about having extreme precision and more about executing the trick/strategy to the puzzle the level is presenting to you correctly, and figuring out that strategy in the first place. Each stage has a new mechanic that it throws at you to keep your on your toes, but none of them wear out their welcome. You might get tilted your first couple of playthroughs or when trying to go for optional content, but it's well worth it. There's no excuse to not have this game in 2021.

Although precision platformer is not my cup of tea, this game is so addictive that I cannot resist to keep playing until I complete my first playthrough. Very difficult and challenging, but also fun to play. It has tons of checkpoints so that even clumsy player like me can beat the base game under several hours. After the base game, tons of additional challenge await those who are not yet satisfied, such as complete the game in no death mode. Totally recommend it.

Incredible precision-platformer, with creative levels built around a simple gimmick. Relatively short, I completed the game in about 2 hours even though I'm terrible at games like this. Only minor complaint is that the controls feel a little slippery at times when you need to make minor adjustments. But the frequent checkpoints make up for it.

eleven years after release, it got a HUGE patch that fixed most of the issues people have had, and hundreds of bugs were killed in one fell swoop. VVVVVV was already an accomplishment in precision-platformer game design, but now it's an example of how important a dedicated developer can be. download, play, and enjoy.

PROS:
-Delightfully simple
-Impeccable soundtrack
-Fun story with a delightful atmosphere
-Lots of personality plus a great sense of humor
-Unnamed levels are really cool exploration pieces
-Really satisfying to find all the locations on the map
-The Tower and Final Challenge are awesome vertical sequences
-Escort mission is such an excellent idea
-Game is great at challenging you in the final sections by making you use what you've learned in isolation together and in harder sections
-Ton of cool mechanics that build on the idea of flipping and the basic gameplay mechanics
-Reward for getting all trinkets is really cool and cute
-Offers further challenge in the form of time trials
-Custom level support + built in level editor
-JUST RECENTLY got an update where as a direct result of the source code being available, the game received a ton of QoL stuff (despite it being an 11 year old singleplayer game)

CONS:
-Veni Vidi Vici (one of the hardest optional sequences in the game) is too easy to get to despite being super early in the game
-Some checkpoints level design causes you to accidentally hit other checkpoints or go to other areas due to stuff like conveyors or just positioning (cuckoo x backsliders)
-Brass Sent Us in Under the Top is really stupid for forcing you to stay off screen but the cycle keeps going offscreen, so you have to estimate how far along it is
-Too much visual noise in the flip lines area; rectangles in background need to be more transparent
-Trinkets (optional collectibles) don't have names that are puns on the areas you find them in for organization's sake and also for cool puns

I played this game all the way through once before on a 3DS on a road trip from Texas to Tennessee, and it was an absolute blast. Decided to pick it up again recently just for the sake of having it on Steam. Got all 20 trinkets and explored the map in its entirety. There's a bunch of optional challenges you could do, but I was satisfied with the campaign + trinkets.

Short, but well worth the money. A must-have for any platformer fan, or just a fan of games. Pick it up when you can!

VVVVV Is a great type of game, where it doesn't need the prettiest graphics to have the best experience. This is because the game is carried by large amounts of interesting characters and fun and innovative, tough gameplay. VVVVV is a great game because of it's simplicity to just be a tough 2d platformer with a large emphasis of exploration. I am also only typing this review because i told my parents i submitted an essay but i havent and i am using this review to explain for the loud typing noises. This game is still insanely good though and i do reccomend.

VVVVVV is an unassuming game on the surface, but it’s one I’m happy I stumbled into. It takes a simple mechanic, not having the ability to jump but the ability to reverse gravity while touching the ground, and does the absolute perfect amount with it to leave you satisfied, without overstaying its welcome. The music is catchy, the graphics are meant to emulate old DOS/Atari 2600 era games, but as long as you’re ok with the retro aspect, you’ll find it a relatively short, but very well polished, well paced, and well put together retro 2D platformer.

Pretty fun platformer overall. The gravity flipping mechanic is lots of fun and well implemented into all the platforming puzzles, and the puzzles themselves are lots of fun as well. Nothing was too impossibly difficult, and each level was well balanced overall I felt. It was a little frustrating at times, but then again I get frustrated easily with platformers, so it likely won't be frustrating for others. The soundtrack is absolute fire as well. Literally could listen to it for days. Highly recommend this game, especially considering how cheap it is!

I like this platformer. The gravity thing makes it so fun and allows for many different opportunities with obstacles. The soundtrack isn't big by any means, but I find myself jamming to the repeated songs anyways. For $5.00, I see no problem with it and there are also many challenges you can try to complete, similar to the strawberries from the game Celeste.

To anyone who happens to glance upon this review, I wholehearted recommend this game. This was of my first indie games that I can remember, and I probably logged 50+ hours into the 3DS version back in the day. God, the nostalgia is strong with this one, but after replaying it, it doesn't feel like it aged a single bit from when I played it all those years ago. Whether it's the gameplay, world, or the music (God, the music is amazing. I'd easily be willing to pay for a soundtrack cd for this game, with just how amazing the OST is) its still just as good as I remember it. Thank you, Terry, for all the years of happiness that you've given me with this game. I'll never forget it, Thank you.

Simple but great game. You have to flip back and forth between surfaces while avoiding obstacles. It is not exceedingly hard and can easily be beat in 1-2 hours if you know what you're doing. Extra modes are also available if you want to work on the game after you finish.

Fazia tempo que eu não sentia o prazer de jogar um jogo como esse. Sem contar a OST que é tranquilamente uma das mais inesquecíveis para mim, VVVVVV tem uma premissa muito simples, mas que é executada de um jeito inteligentíssimo. É baratinho, bastante desafiador (pra quem quiser coletar todos os trinkets, como eu) e muito divertido. 10/10

I palyed this game years ago, sometimes when you remember something that you used to do and used to play. It was better how you remeberd it, but not with this one. This game is exatly as good and enjoyable as i remeberd it. The music is realy cool an fits the situation realy well. The charakter feels good to move not clunky or chobby. Its a realy beatyfull art-style and the story is realy cute and simple. Im not a person who reads storys normaly because it is boring to me most of the time if im honest. But in this game, i feel sad if i accidentaly press away a bit of the story. Its an Amazing platformer wich i can highly recomend! I loved it back then and i love it even more to come back to it. Thanks for creating this game. Its great <3

It's a lot shorter than I thought it'd be but I really enjoyed it.
The puzzles are really good, the story is cute and the chiptune soundtrack is pure genius.

Very hardcore and great game. Like all the games created bvy Terry Cavanagh, it has very attractive gameplay. Is it worth 5 bucks? Definitely yes! Also recommend playing it on Nintendo Switch, as it is very nice experience of playing VVVVVV!

Very charming and simple platformer with about a 5-6 hour completion time. Fantastic soundtrack and lots of challenging platforming tech with a simple gimmick: There is no jumping, just gravity switching.

Good and worth the 4.99 it is off sale. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as hard as people said it was going to be. I just had this one on my indie game backlog for a good year or so. I only died 900ish times. I thought the soundtrack was really decent and I liked the room names. I look forward to a sequel if thats in the works.

Open world platformer. Jumping is replaced by gravity inversion. Creative level design and it plays like a modern game. There is emphasis on trial and error gameplay, you will die a lot, but is well balanced by the large amount of checkpoints and infinite lives. Cool chiptune soundtrack by the way. Game length is ~90 min. Grab it if you can get it for a dollar or so.

I have this game on Steam and 3DS copy since release date. Beaten it multiple times and enjoy the challenges it gave me, all the trinkets are fun to collect. This game is simple and easy to complete, I really enjoy the map system showing you where to explore next to find your lost comrads. The music has to be up there as one of my favorite OSTs of all time, it has that retro feeling that wants you listen to it on repeat for hours and hours!

I recommend anyone to give this short game a shot, you won't be disappointed!

This game is so full of life, the devs really loved working on this masterpiece, it is cheap, the soundtrack is just amazing and the challenging game is just good enough to keep you busy!

Some of the achievements are truly a pain in the ass tough...

This game is quite difficult and challenging, but not punishing or frustrating. You'll constantly be dying, yet you never lose more than a minute (usually only a few seconds) of progress at a time. In the meantime, the world is large enough to feel like a real, complex place with distinct regions, yet small enough to be explorable in a few hours (or under an hour for repeat players). This game provides two main forms of replay value: scattered about the world, are a series of artifacts, that can provide a greater exploration and controls challenge; or one can simply try to shave seconds or deaths off of their performance.

It's a fun, indie game. Relatively short, easy to beat in one or two sittings.

The simplicity of the game is what makes it a lot of fun. It's just a normal platformer but remove the jump, replace it with flip gravity. Yet it still feels unique enough to be worth giving a go.

This game is sorta the type to make you rage, but not really. It's only a handful of trinkets (optional collectibles that contain most of the game's difficulty, the base game itself isn't that hard honestly. Especially with the game handing checkpoints to you at every turn and corner, it doesn't feel unfair when you die and have to start from your last checkpoint.

The music is really good at setting the mood for the game. It's the other thing keeping you calm as you keep dying over and over again lol. The retro feel of the game is welcomed as well, usually a great fit for many indie games, this game certainly being no exception.

I would recommend this game for anyone looking for something that offers a fun challenge while still being a game you can sit back and relax while playing.

And for those who like pain followed by a nice reward, try to get all 20 trinkets.

I had seen this game around for ages, but I shrugged it off because of the seemingly lazy title and graphics. I only became interested in it because I had a lot of fun with the dev's latest game, Dicey Dungeons. I was not prepared for how well crafted the world/levels are or how much fun a game with a single mechanic can be. It can get pretty hard, but the frequency of triggered save states made me determined to overcome every instance of frustration. It's honestly a masterclass in game design.

I dont know what happened to me, but somehow the soundtrack to this game brought me to tears in the middle of my shift at work while I was watching it be played at a GDQ event. Besides the perfect music, the game is beautiful in its simplicity, and I would recommend this to everyone. Indie Hall of Fame first balloter.

This is an experience that is filled with challenge, frustration, more challenges and fun. Every time you get stuck and have to repeat anything over and over until you get it right feels like a major accomplishment. Excelente title!
