A peaceful sci-fi game about reviving life on mars.

An alien gardening puzzlegame? It has a unique mechanic of planting the seeds of numerous life-forms, all of them affecting each-other in different ways. Basically you have to manage your way around mars's ecosystem. It's progression of complexity has an interesting result, as you will rethink each cave (puzzle room) upon revisiting them.

Occasionally, it can get a bit clunky, especially around 2/3 of the game, when the complexity is rising quite high but you do not have all the tools yet. A mistake can snowball into a whole 'cave infestation' which is really tedious to correct. The endgame is more managable though, and well worth pushing through.

The story and voice acting ties it all together nicely.

As Speak the Hungarian rapper famously put it, sometimes people making wars. But waking Mars is better. Zing!

Really nice and unique chill game. Not that challenging but it's nice to just explore and experiment to figure out this alien gardening stuff.

Stop the war. Tupac Shakur rest in peace.

Fun and engaging puzzle-platformer that collapses a bit on itself in the end

I got a copy of Waking Mars as a gift a few years ago, and had a great time with the first half of it, before drifting away to play something else. Today, I sat down to replay the game from the beginning, which I did in one sitting of about six hours.

In Waking Mars, you play as Liang, a scientist who becomes trapped in some Martain caves while exploring them. With the aid of his chatty robot companion and Amani, his partner back at the base, he has to safely escape the tunnels. Before long, however, he encounters strange new life-forms and evidence of sentient aliens, which he investigates as he searches for the exit.

The central mechanic of the game revolves around these alien plants, the Zoa. There are about 8 types of plants in the game, and a handful of animals, and each organism is worth a certain number of points. Your progress in each area is blocked until you have accumulated enough bio-mass to proceed. You are able to carry a handful of seeds around with you, which you will plant in strategically optimal locations, but you have to contend with the advantages and disadvantages of each plant - some plants are necessary, but worth very few points and should only be used sparingly, others have high point values but come with major annoyances, such as the spiny ones which will attack you, or the explosive ones which can wipe out other plants in the line of fire.

Waking Mars starts strong; the puzzles move you along at a good clip and finding new challenges keeps you alert and engaged. There are a tad too many cutscenes that spell things out before you have a chance to explore for yourself, but the VO is quite good, so that's not a huge problem.

It's around the 75% mark where the game starts showing some cracks around the edges.

First, the requirements of each room begin to get quite high. You can't just wing it like you could in the beginning of the game; it's clear that there is more or less an intended solution for each room. If you plunge in headfirst, you stand a high chance of making things much harder for yourself than they should be, as some plants once planted cannot be removed. The problem is that implementing the intended solutions can get really tedious. You can only carry a limited amount of each type of seed, so there will be loads of backtracking to completed puzzles just to locate enough seeds to progress on the current one. Some of the more useful seed types, like the high-value spike seed and the incredibly useful moss that makes ground more fertile, take considerable effort to farm. Another high-value plant has seeds that cannot be collected as they are large and float in the air like a helium balloon; they need to be clumsily and painstakingly guided to fertile ground by bumping them around with your jetpack. The AI animals tend to get themselves killed at inopportune times, again resulting in a loss of bio-mass.

Second, the health mechanic is more of a nuisance than a challenge; certain plants and environmental hazards cause you to lose health; you regain it by standing near a fertile flower. For some reason, though, your health increases pretty slowly, so if you get hurt, it makes you just stand around.

Finally, the ending(s) drags on a bit much for my taste, as it requires backtracking to previous locations and completing an irritating frequency-narrowing minigame.

All in all, I enjoyed Waking Mars, and you might like it too, but I would ultimately not recommend it based on my experience with the last leg of the game, where I feel like it gets too frustrating for its own good.

Most of the game is fantastic. Controls are mostly fine, graphics are good if a little... mid-2010s-flash-esque (You can see the individual segments that were animated and most things other than the protagonist have 2-3 frames of animation. it's not jarring but it is rather unsophisticated.) There's no combat, and very little in the way of twitch reflexes. There's no death penalty besides being shuffled to the start of the room; any progress you made on planting stays.

Voice acting is rather good actually, and doesn't overstay its welcome. Character portraits are well-done, but a bit sparse (I'd be shocked if there were more than 20 frames collectively).

The lovingly rendered ass of the protagonist is a bit uncomfortable to view in crawlspace closeups, but that's probably just me.

HOWEVER, there are (as far as I could tell) completely un-warned-for segments with rapidly flashing colors and moving shapes and lines near the end of the game. These segments triggered migraines for me, would almost certainly trigger photosensitive epilepsy, and there is no way to skip them or turn off the flashing. Also, these segments have no gameplay benefit - it's just randomly waggling the analog stick while being visually assaulted until a shape or outline appears.

An unconventional science-fiction puzzle platformer (no, not really a Metroidvania the way some describe it - there's no real progression of abilities). Not very long but definitely enjoyable.

I thought it was an ok game but I really started to get a little bored/irritated at about 60% game completion. I powered through to the end by finding it was best to make the earliest levels each all single plant types and fast traveling to them and back when I needed specific seeds so I wouldn't have to pollute any harder later levels with plants that would be a problem for you

it was a little annoying that I couldn't find information on how many points things give so here is a basic quick guide

Healing plant 15 points +5 more points when watered
Water plant 10 points
Fire plant 30 points
Thorn plant 40 points
Long stem plant 30 points
Invasive plant 5 points (both tan and purple varients)
crab 5 points each
flying squid 40 points each
a plant on fertile ground 50 points

the most annoying seeds to get were the thorn plant seeds because you needed to get a creature to be grabbed by it and then it had a 30ish second recharge time after eating the creature

the game has a bit of screen tearing
the music really didn't fit the game in my opinion and sometimes while the people were talking the music was really loud
the voice acting was ok
so its not atrocious or anything it is just not something that I would recommend

I really enjoyed this, but it's probably not for everyone. If you're a bio nerd or someone who reads slow scifi novels this might be for you - it looks like an action platformer but it's more like a puzzle-y farming sim in flavour. That being said, I personally had a wonderful time and I got very invested in the characters, completing the game 113% somehow because the realistic xenobiology and storyline was so interesting to me.

Playing it with desktop controls was difficult and took about as much getting used to as I imagine controlling a real jetpack does. Possibly playing it with a different control system might be better.

I enjoyed exploring, bringing life to and especially solving the mystery of Lethe Cavern. The rooms branch and meet again several places, which probably created a better feeling of exploration, but it also made me miss several rooms, and the lore they contained, by the time I got to the ending. When you enter the Core, just check the map to make sure you got everything.

Platform games aren't at the top of my list - mainly because of their limited world, low replayability and (many of them) being highly linear - however, Waking Mars is one of the most enjoyable games I've been playing lately, and for me, one of the best platform games to date. Its sci-fi/ Mars setting and artwork caught my attention; but it was the goal of creating and encouraging an ecosystem within the Red Planet that sold me on it.

The story is simple and straightforward, but it is intelligently executed and really intriguing. Character development is little, but just right. There are no enemies, only yourself, the 'flauna' and the environment - but you might be surprised at just how much of a threat you can pose to yourself. The goals are laid out before you in a no-nonsense manner: you are exploring, searching, gathering, manipulating, creating, and de-constructing to create, in a more favourable way to the environment's (and your) needs. There is something to be said for balance, and you learn by trial and error; but don't worry, there is nothing that you can't undo - though it may require a measure of patience.

The game mechanics are superbly fluid - the game runs without a hitch (it's enough for me to say that if I can run this on my present setup, anyone can - trust me). The time, work and research that went into this game is incredible. Overall gameplay is relaxing with adequate moments of doubt, constant wonder and dashes of uncertainty. It is a wonder to me that I do feel a sense of real isolation while playing - I think this is thanks to the beauty of the graphical style and the great music - but this is exactly what I would expect, it's the lonely and mysterious Red Planet, after all. The time it will take you to complete this game? It depends on you. I completed it (EDITED: start to finish TWICE) at the listed time played.

One of the best features of this game for me was the ability to revisit any area at any time without limit. This alone makes this platformer just so non-linear. As well as being vital - you will have to travel around to resupply your seeds, revisit some areas dependant on other areas' progress, or just to re-balance an area if need be - it is a real treat to be able to return and see how the caverns have been thriving (or not) in your absence.

IMPORTANT: If non-stop action, mayhem and destruction - i.e. death-n-glory - are your bread-and-butter, you will fast become bored with Waking Mars. BUT...

...If you enjoy platform games, I believe this is a must for your collection and many will undoubtedly enjoy it. If you are a wary platformer like me, it may blow you away and you won't regret this purchase (reg. price is reasonable; on sale price, you'd be crazy not to try it).

Happily jet-packing (and occasionally bouncing) around in the ever-deepening caverns of Mars to re-awaken it... 11/10

For far too long have sci-fi games been centered around violence and killing.

Thankfully this game is not one of those games. Waking Mars is a game about life and growth, not death and destruction.

Instead of some space soldier, you play as an astrobiologist on a quest of knowledge and discovery. Along the way the game gives some educational facts about Earth and Mars as well as insight on possible interactions within an ecosystems.

So if you desire games that are about growth or exploration, this contains both and should be on your wishlist or cart.
