In We Happy Few wirst du folgendes erleben:
 • eine sich prozesshaft generierende Welt, d.h. die Erfahrung jedes Spielers wird einzigartig sein,
 • eine Auswahl von Schwierigkeitsstufen, sowohl für neue als auch für erfahrene Spieler,
 • permadeath, falls du alle deine masochistischen Bedürfnisse stillen willst,

Purchased this game during testing !
At that time, it had been maybe $20USD.
It was also still very much in its baby stages, but the story was still there - if one was so inclined to read everything, listen to everything, and familiarize with the parallel era to the WWII the story is loosely touching here and there. During the growing pains of the game developing, structure lacked and it had been very basic. Though, with attentiveness, a player could follow some path into the game story.
Playing it in '22, it is remarkable - not polished to its fullest potential - but it is a structured story, and even with the few little glitches and bugs, it is enjoyable. (:
Probably not for everyone, but enjoyable.

Procedurally generated does lend itself into some odd layouts and some weird NPC interactions with props, but I enjoyed the story very much. The combat/stealth is simple, but that's not a bad thing in my opinion. I haven't played the DLC yet, though I plan to.

Great idea, amazing setting, but poor execution.

Quests are just fetching stuff again and again, so the game becomes repetitive pretty quickly. Act 1 was ok, the storyline might not be linear but it's still bearable. Moving on to act 2 was what made me drop the game. Caring for a
baby
when the game already feels like a chore?! No thank you.

Interesting art style, but the story is boring and the gameplay is atrocious. Buggy and repetitive. Every quest is just go fetch some item and run through the whole map. Open parts of map poorly optimized. Was going to speed run it but it's a painful waste of time.

I loved this game. the vibe is honestly really immersive. I liked the contrast between sally who starts off in the village, compared to the other two who basically spend the first portion of the game in the garden district. Very cool cautionary tail on blissful ignorance. I also like the open world type beat, lots of side quest.

I was going to vote this game up but the saving game system in this game is the absolute worst I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of bad ones over the years! It is so utterly atrocious I have to downvote it. It's SO absurd that you can lose a whole bunch of progress after saving the game AND the game autosaving itself, only to come back later and a whole bunch of your progress is completely gone. I can't play the whole game in one day!

First of all, it's a great concept. The game gives you the feeling it wants to give you both visually and with scenario, art is original and atmosphere is perfectly designed for this dystopia world, quests are unique, filled with dark humor and irony. But I cannot say the same for the mechanics and crafting system. Although the visual design and scenario of the game is good, the mechanics and craft options of the game do not work as they intended, or rather, it is not necessary, which causes it to become monotonous after a while. While playing with Artur, I collected a lot of materials and crafted many items, but the game was over without using most of what I did (even though I played game difficulty as hard), then of course I did not spare time for crafting while playing with Sally and Ollie. Sally's chemical items were exciting at first and I tried to play lore friendly, sadly after a while I realized that they were optional too. In other words, if you are good at escaping from people, you can finish the whole game by running straight without using any mechanics or equipments. I bought the game when it was on sale and although the game has monotonous points, it covers it up with its scenario and atmosphere, I recommend you to buy it.

Had to stop cause playing the game just felt like a chore, quests feels very repetitive, game was buggy.

Story wise, i really like the concept but I would watch a story play through on youtube to experience the story.

Kinda of a shame cause i can really see the effort that goes to the setting, story and the lore.

Wow, this game is WAY UNDER RATED. 71 hours of gameplay to complete all 3 DLC, side quests, and all 3 of the main campaign character's quests.

You play as 3 characters in England that takes place in the 60s if I remember right. It is based on a sort of derivative of A CLockwork Orange. If you like that book/movie then this is a must have IMO.l Everyone is basically brainwashed and under the control of drugs given out by the government. its even in the drinking water. The drug is called Joy. If you dont take it , you will get yourself into big trouble. It is basically a police state, and a plot that is more relative today than they could have guessed when this game was produced.

Gampley with the keyboard and mouse is superb and the game seems well optimized to me. i played it on 3440x1440 ultra wide screen. The graphics are good and the sound is good as well. Its first person.

The game has stealth, simply combat, and tells a great story. It has a fairly good open world feeling to it. It also has very strong survival elements in it as well, as you have to search for materials to craft things. You can craft tools, weapons, clothes, and more. You can steal things too.

This was one of those games that kept me up late quite a few nights. I highly recommend this game for its story and creativeness. I cant think of a single game that is anything like it. Im glad that I did not pay a lot of attention to the lower review ranking on here!

The only downside is that some of the side quests are a bit repetitive.

Good but not great. It starts off fun and has lots of potential. The story in act one is really impressive and sucks you in... but the game-play gets tedious and annoying... and by the final act, you just push to get through so you can see how the story ends (because the overall story is worth it)

Good but really unpolished.

Pros

- Interesting story and world
- Good graphics
- Good soundtrack
- Good characters
- The DLC is really good

Cons

- The game is really buggy (objects and people floating and sitting on nothing, enemies not functioning at all)
- Bobbies and town NPCs have the same 10 voice lines
- There isn't a lot of variety with the town NPCs
- It's really easy to get rid of enemies
- While the game's world is interesting, it feels empty (not many different town NPCs, there is a big empty space behind buildings in towns)
- Main quests are quite repetitive

I do recommend the game, but do buy it on sale.

I've tried many times now to play this game but it's impossible to enjoy.
the joy of forcing myself through it isn't worth it, it's a bloody chore.
so many game breaking bugs that adds another layer of difficulty to the game.
bad game design and choices from trends in 2018/19 plague this game terribly.
the only thing this game has going for it is the story and even that is dry at times.
my biggest gripes with this game are teleporting enemies and constant freeze ups when something happens in the game. (bobby went to blow his whistle and the game froze)
why they tried to make this a survival game is beyond me it's a mechanic not needed.
my suggestion is get it at a heavy discount or just watch a play through.

thanks for coming out to my mischief. ???? ????????????????

Hmm, I don't know what to say. The story is actually quite interesting and I love the setting of the game. It distantly reminds me of the Bioshock games.

From a technical point of view, the game is still pretty rough. The AI acts up a bit and at least for me tends to break the progress of certain side quests. Also, it is not always clear how I should progress in some side quests. Some are also just broken because characters are not clickable... So, because I don't want to waste any more time, I will just play the main missions and that's it. The engine does mostly deliver a smooth frame rate, but there is a lot of micro stuttering going on...

I got the game for a bargain during the Christmas sale, so it's not that big of a deal for me. However, the game it certainly NOT WORTH full price. Don't buy it unless there is a sale!

The game could have been really great, but yeah. The quality of games isn't what it used to be. That's life, I guess.

I really loved this game, and surprises me that so many people seem to dislike it. I thought the plot was really fascinating and the main quests were fun, I thought the characters and dialogue were really well written and I was invested in them, and I found the setting gorgeous (and it is a really nice change to play a dystopic game in a setting that isn't soul-destroying). There were some moments of real levity and creativity that I feel are pretty unique to this game, and the DLC is amazing. Really and truly three great stories that build on the world but in totally different and challenging ways. Overall, I think the writing and acting is way better than most games I've played.

A lot of the criticism here seems broadly to be criticism of open-world games? Yes a lot of the side quests are repetitive, and the loot ends up feeling repetitive but this is also true of skyrim or fallout or whatever open-world game you're playing.
The greatest difference between this game and most open worlds is that the new locations really are NOT repetitive - you get to explore really cool and interesting new places as the plot develops. The trick here is, if you aren't into repetitive side quests... just skip them, just do the main quests. There's no penalty if you don't do the side stuff, and you can progress through the game quickly. They also don't add much to the plot, they just build the world a little, so you won't miss much.

I get that it's not going to be for everyone, but I loved it and I think it's a magnificent game. It's gorgeous, memorable, and fascinating. I really can't recommend it enough.

My personal Summary of the game by playing with Arthur only.

The game itself is totally boring. I've played for 47 in a completionist way and It almost made me fall asleep.
It could have been much better for a exploration game with cool interactive mechanics and better graphics, but instead, it lacks much of it. It is not that bad but they could improve the way the game works with the stealthy mechanics, economy, skill system and mapping.

About NPCs, only few are unique and related to the story sadly, even Arthur is as boring as the pedestrians. The ambience of the game is nice accordingly to the date the story was developed. There are so much to read if you wanna catch what is going on, many flashbacks and dialogues that in a personal perspective does not tell much of the whole point of story of the game until later on i suppose. Arthur is just a fraction of the game, so there are many hours left in order to complete the entire game.
I can not continue the game because I have lost the interest on the contrary I'll probably end with a dead brain seriously.

The Devs are obviously influenced by Bioshock, but what makes the difference is one is boring and the another one is not for many reasons.

If you are willing to play the game, be sure to have patience, time and taste for British story, humour and expressions. The are also so much walking from point A to B and vast zones with nothing to see, just for filling.

I give it 5/10. It is a kickstater indie game and is respectable, but on the developing the missed the JOY.

Thanks for reading!

TLDR : Not my cup of tea.

I played through the entire first Act, and maybe eventually I will slog through the rest of it. I enjoyed Arthur's story going along as he remembered his past and finale.

The root of the problem for me? Game feels like it's wasting my time. I started Act 2 with Sally and I was hooked up until I had to go to the Garden District. Already I'm just doing more fetch quests essentially and it is a real slap to progression cause I'm now relegated to only being allowed to walk again. Doesn't help that well, all the player upgrades just make the game well, a game. For example, you can unlock the ability to run around without raising suspicions.

Admittedly I probably burned out on Act 1 cause I did do all the side quests available, but I'm probably just going to finish this game's story on Youtube rather than 'play' it myself. Cause to me, it stopped feeling like a game after about a half dozen quests that backtracked the same area.

I'm trying to remember any quests that didn't just involve going from point A to B and presented any challenge at the destination. Can only think of the Butcher's.
Side note: There is a surprising amount of platforming to reach higher places for a game that feels very awkward to do any sort of jumping and climbing in.

I can't recommend this as I couldn't even be bothered to finish the game myself. Might change in the future, but the gameplay for me is too much walking for not enough payoff. Funny enough, I'd say they were banking on the world being a lot more immersive than it ended up being.

TL;DR. A great dystopian setting with a good story ruined by awfully boring gameplay.

We happy few is essentially an immersive sim set in a dystopian post WWII England where allies lost and Germans took away all the children. And most of the population takes a drug to forget everything and be happy.

While the premise and story (that follows and lets you play as three different characters) are in general intriguing, your interest will most likely be ruined by survival-style gameplay. You have to find some specific parts to craft some items not only to survive, but also to progress story quests. And since the world is procedurally generated, sometimes it takes ages to find one or two of these specific items. You can't simply look in the walkthrough, you have to go and loot every single container and rob every single house in order to find the item you need.

But since everything is procedurally generated (i.e. looks the same) the game quickly becomes really tedious since most of the time you search through containers or run to the next key spot. Running in general seems to take up a major part of your time: it's neither fun nor rewarding, and makes you hate the game more with each passing hour. Not only that, but each character you play moves slower than the one before. By the time I reached the third and final character - Ollie a war veteran (who is also a lunatic) – I was already pretty tired of endless running (and fast travel system doesn't help much with that). Imagine my frustration when it turned out Ollie moves incredibly slow.

Not only that but he's also a diabetic. You have to use glucose every 10 minutes or so, otherwise Ollie's blood sugar drops and his stamina and HP are halved. Oh, and he also yells at people making them attack him immediately. So you simply HAVE to craft the syringes, which in turn makes you look for ingredients. Which takes a lot of time and is zero fun.

Generally, these survival/crafting/looting aspects are what ruins what otherwise would be a good game. It could have been a walking simulator or an adventure with a great story, but instead this is a bad survival game, so a great setting and visuals are kinda wasted. I still finished the story, but since this is a game and the gameplay is really lacking, I am not recommending it.

P.S. There are also tons of technical issues. Like teleporting characters (or spawning just before your eyes), tons of animation bugs, bugged out side quests and whatnot.

Furthermore, the game is also heavily CPU bound because it only runs a few threads. At least on Ryzen 3600 I regularly encountered drops to 45-50 fps because some cores were 100% loaded, while all other were idle. This always happened in areas with lots of NPCs, so fps drops are most likely due to poorly written AI.

This game is different to anything I have played. It has a great story and setting. The characters are well done with each feeling different. The different zones set their tones excellently and I just love the overall style and thing it has going on. A little pricey but it feels like a high quality polished game that's well worth it.

I didn't enjoy this game. I thought the concept and atmosphere was pretty cool, but beyond that found it to be fairly dull. Flashbacks were annoying ad pointless. Combat is really dull and repetitive. Lots of running around, or hiding in alleys. Bit of a let down overall. Didn't finish, which is rare for me as I normally push through to the end even if a game isn't perfect. I would not recommend.

I originally played this game back when it was first released. After I beat the first chapter with Arthur, for some reason, the game was unsintalled from my steam. After 45+ hours on one chapter, and due to not wanting to start over, I stopped playing - for years. Until a few days ago, when I decided to give it a whirl again. To my delight, after reinstalling, I was surprised to see that my actual save file was still there, fuck yeah. So I picked this shit right back on up. The next two chapters were significantly shorter, but that may have been more on me than the game itself. Yes, it's still buggy, but that adds a certain charm to the game in my opinion. The graphics are great, the artwork is phenomenal, and the game play is just fun. Sometimes it does get a bit repetitive, but this was a game I looked forward to for years before it was finally released, and I'm so glad I picked it back up to finish it.

One of my all time favourite games, if I'm being honest. Despite the high price and loads of bugs in the game, it's one of the best ones out there. The storyline is immaculate, the graphics are lovely and the atmosphere is fantastic! I could only recommend to play it.

I think the DLCs are better than the actual original game.

I like the art work and the concept, but I did find the game daunting at times. I understand the inventory weight system, but it got old. I over all feel the game was TOO long and it turned into a chore for me.

Arthur's walk through: It was ok. I don't think it really gave you a lot of story and the ending was meh. I preferred how he could use any weapon and didn't have some sort of side issue slowing him down. However, his walk through got rather long.

Sally's walk through: When I finished Arthur's I was finished with the game due to how long it was. However, I usually don't quit a game mid game. So I played Sally's. I understand the time period the game took place, but the mere fact SHE had to tend to a baby or become over burdened and that she couldn't even use a frying pan as a weapon was ridiculous. Her ending was also meh.

Ollie's walk through: I think his was the worst for me, as it took me longer to get the supplies for his glucose shot. So it dragged out an already dragged out game.

Rating: 6.5/10
Genre: Open World Survival/stealth

THE GOOD:
+ The story, setting, concept and atmosphere is some of the most creative and interesting aspect I have seen in a video game in a long time. In the town of Wellington Wells everybody wears masks with a smile on their faces and takes a happy drug called Joy which helps them live in complete happiness and ignorant bliss to distract themselves from the horrors of war. The story is told through three characters’ perspectives.

+ Each character has their own skill trees. Some skills are useless while others are game breaking.

+ The three DLC’s is surprisingly excellent and much better than the main game. Each DLC focuses on a side character from the main game and seems to really focus on the strengths of the game.

THE AVERAGE:
+/- This is an open world game that has randomized level design. The open world itself lacks variety, as there are only two environments, the main city and the outskirts and they feel bland and repetitive. In addition, every playthrough randomizes the maps and locations of side quests. Rather than having well designed maps that could have been fun and interesting to explore, we get a boring open world level design.

+/- Quest design and gameplay itself felt uninspired. Almost every main quest is some variation of going to a character only to discover you need some other item and then having to run around the map to find and return it. As you do this, you scavenge for materials & weapons to survive but I found the vast majority of time running away when things go bad and waiting for NPC behavior to reset the most viable option.

THE BAD:
- For a game largely based on stealth, stealth is awfully frustrating. I HIGHLY recommend you play on easy as it makes this much more manageable. Guards will notice you even if your out of sight, if you do happen to get caught then everybody in a 5-mile radius becomes aware of your presence and chases you. Running away for a minute or two and hiding seems to reset NPC behaviour patterns.

- It’s a game all about blending in with the crowd but if you do anything that pisses NPC’s off then you run into the same problem as stealth. From a story perspective it makes sense, from a gameplay perspective its frustrating and poorly implemented. However, there are skills that allow you to bypass this frustration (see above). Interesting enough, the DLC seems to remove this game mechanic.

- glitchy achievements/quests make it very frustrating or impossible to complete

CONCLUSION:
This is definitely not a game for everyone. You are either going to really love it or hate it. I feel like this game was designed around a checklist of what the developers believed to be popular at the time rather then designing a game to its core strengths. Many of my criticisms of the game were addressed with the DLC’s which is why I enjoyed them so much more.

I watched Arthur & Sally's stories on the Ps4 before picking this game up myself. I'm still at the beginning of the game and can safely say the amount of content people are looking for in an open world game is definitely here, and the world they created is fresh and unique. A lot of time went into designing the quests and how they affect the story.

Speaking of, the game sends you through 3 stories, with the DLC bringing even more content. Each story provides a new character to play to unfold how and why they are in this dystopian city where everyone is artificially happy but don't know it. Kind of like real life, but everyone is wearing a mask. Well, a real one. Well, it covers their whole face. Okay fine, it's like real life but there are no cell phones.

Yep that's basically it. You play as 3 characters that suddenly remembered that the world is fake and spend the entire game trying to escape the reality that was created by people using war as a cover to gain power.

I don't know what reality is any more.

I gave it a good chance, I love open worlds and quirky settings, but the logic in this game just doesn't make any sense. Just a couple annoying examples: I get why you have to dodge the everyone in towns after dark when there's a curfew, but why do the general bums ignore everyone else and come after me when it's dark? If I accidentally hit the crouch button for just a hair, why does everyone in the vicinity come for the kill? Why are the junkies jumping up and down in puddles of toxic goo, but if I hit the jump button for any reason, everyone again comes for the kill? There's just no consistency and it just doesn't add up. The environments are mostly just the same houses and buildings copied and pasted over and over again. I just don't care about anyone or anything in the story other than finding out where the kids went.

Watching the Trailer and Jacksepticeye play this a few years ago I always wanted to play as I thought the Design looked so unique and fun. We Happy Few lived up to my expectations in terms of Art Style/Graphics and Story, but definately did not with majority of the quests and how the area you play in (Wellington Wells) is a repetitive and boring place to explore. Bearing in mind I have only played Act 1/Arthur's perspective of the story so far, nonetheless the story is gripping and enjoyable but is littered with meaningless fetch and grab side quests that add minimal amounts of anything to the main story line. Sure you meet the occasional interesting character or the odd mission that isn't as boring as watching paint dry, but unfortunately most don't live up to this expectation. Thankfully there are fast travel locations that you can access in each area/island as you will spend 99% of the game running around waiting for the stamina bar to recharge so you can begin sprinting to your next destination again. The audio and animation is amazing and is a large factor behind enjoying this game. To summarize We Happy Few is an enjoyable game that I would definately purchase when on sale ($15). The story line, voice acting and animation is amazing and the entire setting of the game is really enjoyable to play. Focus on the main quests and you will likely enjoy yourself - 7.5/10 :)

*DISCLAIMER* i have only played the first act but am not interested/invested enough to finish the other ones for now.

We happy few is a game that i'm going to recommend but only to a certain audience.
It's definitely one of those cases where a 'Neither' button would be nice wether you recommend it or not.
So if you would like to find out if you're one of those people that i'd recommend it to then keep on reading.
However i do not recommend this game to anyone one the full price, it's just way too expensive for the amounts of problems it has.

The good:
+ The story is decently engaging and interesting but nothing mindblowing.
+ The premise is very clever and unique and it's also pretty well thought out IMO even though it does have some holes here and there that didn't make a lot of sense.
+Voice acting is really good.
+ The dialogue between characters is also very good accompanied with the great voice acting made it very enjoyable whenever there was interaction between the protagonist and someone else.
+ Art style is also very pretty and mostly unique.
+ The flashbacks between Arthur and Percy are really well written and makes you care about a character that you never see.
+ Humour is also pretty decent.
+ I really liked the hotbar managment for some reason.
+ The 'scripted' or linear missions are really good and outshine the normal ones.
+ It knows what it is and doesn't take itself too serious.

The bad:
- Combat is really basic and boring. It's like the melee combat in Bioshock but even worse, I think the main reason for this is that it doesn't feel satisfying to hit someone, there's not a good feedback wether you took a big chunk of damage out of an enemy or if you didn't even hit him/her.
- The stealth is also really basic and boring. There's a crouch that makes you less detectable and if you sneak up to an enemy you can silently take them out and that's about it. At first i was doing stealth but after a while i just ran around and smashed everyone in the head since it's not even necessary because you can outrun everyone.
- Overall it's pretty badly optimized. If i can run Metro Exodus with everything on max and it stays around 50-60fps than surely this game should be able to stay above 50 fps with everything on high. There's certain areas that's worse and certain that are a lot better but in the open world it's mostly shit.
- This brings me to my next point wich is that the open world just feels so unnecessary, the open world honestly sucks ass. It's mostly because it doesn't feel lived in and everything looks the same. The worst part is probably whenever you are not in the city because it's just a 'huge' barren, lackluster, boring meadow with some generic broken houses here and there.
- And that also brings me to my next point wich is that most of the things look and feel copy paste. All the exterior of the houses looks the same, there's only a handfull of different looking NPC's and game mechanics don't change one bit throughout the entire first chapter.
- The AI is just horrendous, they're so fucking dumb like you can jump into a trash bin when you are getting chased by a mob right infront of their eyes and they won't even notice. Also at night there's a curfew so the police won't tolerate if you are outside then but here's the catch, if you just run on the sidewalk they won't even notice you are there. Next an NPC can look at a dead body and just go on about their day like it's always been there.
- Another point on the open world is that it is way too big for it's own good. It would be fine if there's more stuff to do and if it isn't all the same.
- This brings me to my next point, that almost every mission is go here retrieve this and bring it back and again. This is always horrible mission design but if you combine this with a big open world in wich you have to run several hundreds of meters (sometimes even quadruple digits) through a barren, boring world then it's just a chore to do everything.
- There's a lot of graphical glitches or glitches with the AI.
- And as for last, the music is mostly not present and if it is then it's mostly forgettable.

You might wonder why i do recommend and well that is because some people will be able to see past these certain negatives and enjoy a good story and really good voice acting + dialogue, you'll also need a lot of patience for the game. So if you are one of these people then i do really recommend this game whenever it goes on sale wich is fairly reguraly.

Maybe the game does get better or the gameplay and such gets somewhat enjoyable in the next 2 chapters but i (ATM) don't feel like i have the patience to give it another 10 hours of my time even though i decently enjoyed the first chapter, I feel ike i'm going to get very annoyed if i play it more. I'm probably going to give these chapters another go in the future maybe even near future but for now i let it for what it is.

So i'm going to give this game a, what i think is more than fair;
6.3/10

I really wanted to love this game, the idea of it seemed very interesting but sadly it fell short. I even tried exploring and doing side missions. The combat itself feels so dry and odd somehow. The NPCs all say the same thing most of the time and they are very glitchy. Most of the puzzles could have been solved by 5 year olds. Story is 3/10. One thing i did like was the look of the world, it fits right in to the theme they were going for. Didn't even bother to play sally story, the game felt like a chore more so towards the end. I just ran past all the enemies and beat the game.

We Happy Few is definitely a game I wanted to love. It has a great look and feel and the plot is genuinely engaging. Unfortunately, as others have pointed out, the gameplay quickly becomes tedious – not just the fact that it makes you wander back-and-forth across the whole map just for the sake of it, but also
the drug mechanic, which quickly becomes a massive pain rather than entertaining
.

So after 31 hours of gameplay I simply gave up. Which was a shame, because I wanted to know how the story played out; I just couldn’t go through the hours of gameplay necessary to find out.

Steam says I've put seven [Edit: Eighteen?] hours into this game. I've put it down three times, now, and forced myself to try it again as many times. I just can't get into this game.

The game, on an artistic level, is really nice. The graphics are good, the feeling of a messed-up mod England is well-communicated, and I enjoyed looking around. The sets and props are really good, although like any similar game you start recognizing repeats pretty quickly. The music is pretty good. The characters, with their super-expressive, doughy faces are *really* good. The story, as much of it as I could tease out so far, looked to be pretty good.

There are some technical issues. The sound engine is a little too eager to cut off sources, even when they're not distant enough. The pathing has a number of glitches, and characters will fall through floors and ZOOM rubberband to try to be where they are supposed to be in comical ways. I saw one character who was positive it was supposed to be at a certain point, but that point was occupied by rubble, and the character was stuck in a loop climbing the rubble, falling off, then banding back onto the rubble before falling off again.

Load times are generally very good, but there are a few times when the screen flips to a waiting screen, then flips away in less than a second. The save-game system is insane: there are plenty of times when it will not let you save, but won't tell you why. On the other hand, reloading a save always starts you off collapsed on the ground for some reason.

The story seems like it would be good, and it really needs a good medium to tell it. This story wants to be an Oscar-nominated animated short. Unfortunately, it has been inexpertly wedged into a video game instead.

That's the whole issue. For all the obvious amounts of care and love put into the art side of things, and even the technical side of things, the game is just not enjoyable. The design is such that you will be unfairly thrown into situations without understanding what is going on. Consider, for example, the bees. Early in the game, you'll find bees in a tree. If you get near the tree, the bees will attack you, follow you across the entire map, and eventually murder you. What are you supposed to do here? No idea. That hasn't been explained, yet.

When you're wandering through the hinterlands, you'll come across big red flowers that look like they were cleverly designed to stick out so that the player would know they were important collectibles. They are not collectible. You'll see at least three different kinds of trash cans, and they are almost all searchable. Except for the ones that, for some reason, are not. You'll hear innumerable audio cues that seem like they should be telling you things. But they're not.

Meanwhile, you're going to constantly get dragged into cinematics that draaaag on while the characters chew the scenery. Hours after you start the game, and just as you're figuring out the day/night well-dressed/sloppy-dressed system, it will take you to another island where all the rules have changed again. You'll finally get your first dose of 'joy' -- the in-game soma-drug -- and it will quickly wear off, but it won't matter during daytime. It just means some robots will yell at you, I guess?

Most of the time, I can muscle through the growing pains of starting a new game; of learning the rules of its world. This game, I'm still not sure who my character is supposed to be and how he is supposed to act, and this is doing my head in.

I don't know. I don't care. I give up.

I'm sorry. I've been following the development of the game for a long time, and I know they put inordinate amounts of love and care into this project, but... ugh. This ain't it.

Edit: I forced myself through 18 total hours and finished Arthur's story. I came back to update this review, but I couldn't find anything I wanted to change. I still actively dislike this game, and if it wasn't for some misplaced sunk-cost fallacy, I'd have walked away 11 hours ago.

This game is a hard one to recommend as the first story(Arthur's) is the most polished and only required one save game reload which isn't great but honestly i've seen worse. Arthur's story also has good mission structure and has a well written story. I cant say the same about the other two stories since I got stuck on Sally's story and had to restart it from the beginning multiple times because of save game corruptions and missions not updating and allowing me to perform certain functions to progress such as feeding Gwen. This is honestly pretty crappy for a game which is charging $60 entry fee. Overall I would recommend this game if you can find it on sale like I did for $10 or less, but I sadly cant recommend it for full price due to the fact that it has so many game breaking and progress halting bugs :(.

I like this game mostly for the atmosphere. They've built an interesting alternate universe here where Britain was occupied by Germany during WW2 because America didn't intervene in the war. The Allies still won (eventually) on the strength of the Soviet war machine and Britain was eventually freed, but the way everything changed as a result of what happened is fascinating. The in game music is on point, and it's pretty amusing to be high on Joy, the drug that everyone takes. The storylines involve flawed heroes who all did horrible things, but are somehow still sympathetic on some level anyway.

The gameplay is probably the weakest part in my estimation, being one of those stealth type games where you're eventually encouraged to start swinging because it's annoying to sneak around everyone all the time. There is a stealth takedown you will use a lot. I mean really a lot, so many times. You're just lucky no NPC ever does that to you. On the plus side, the fact that everyone is high on Joy all the time makes it a little more believable that they actually do forget about you when you run away from fights you can't win, only to dodge around a corner and wait for them to lose aggro. Overall it's not un-fun but it reminds me a lot of my time in Assassin's Creed (the first one) where I would kill some guy, get into a big fight, and then run away by using the rooftops to dive into a hay bale, lather rinse repeat.

You also do a lot of step-and-fetch-it quests, get X so you can do Y for Z. Entire questlines are spent this way, tedious slogs of sending you all around the island to get a bunch of crap. Sure, every game does it. I just resent being every NPC's errand boy in these kinds of games. In MMOs I usually skip those quests, but a lot of that is on the main questlines here, sadly.

Those complaints aside, I am enjoying my time spent with the game, so thumbs up. I did buy it on a deep discount, 85% I think? Would definitely wait for a sale, although the Steam statistics show that in general that's what everyone does, so how useful is that advice?

The negative reviews I'm seeing on here are incredibly nit-picky and uncharitable. No, this game is not Bioshock, and it's ridiculous and unfair to even compare the two. Not every game has to be like a more popular game you enjoyed. This was developed by a much smaller company on a kickstarter budget. And for what it's worth, it looks brilliant, the writing is stellar and the game-play is innovative. I really hate how consumer culture has poisoned what should be the reciprocal relationship between creators and players. The day independent game studios fold up and all you're left with is micro-transaction heavy MMOs, Raid: Shadow Legends and Call of Duty sequels, you'll look back and weep on what could have been if you had only been a little more flexible with your expectations and put your money towards supporting artists with a unique vision.

The game just feels VERY unpolished. Events and missions don't trigger cleanly and it is generally buggy. I'm trying to just play through it for the story which is pretty okay but I cannot stand having to run back and forth just to progress forward and try to get things to trigger.
Honestly, I think the game suffers from trying to be open world. There is nothing interesting about the open world aside from it creating more landscape for the player to move through to add time to gameplay. Unfortuantely it falls into the failure of a lot of indy games where they created some assets (buildings, trees, etc) and then just place them randomly and this is supposed to give us the feeling of it being a large environment. My feeling is that you either need to take the time and man-power to do an open world right or don't bother and with a $60 asking price they are competing with games with AAA budgets .... Hopefully there is a sequel which can execute on some of this better but for me I doubt I will finish playing the game at this rate....

On a sale i can recommend it. The main game has great athmosphere but lacks depth and execution. The three acts could have been more individual gameplay wise, like the DLCs are. The potential was there.

The DLCs however are brilliant, better than the main game itself imho.

Plenty of people have given well written reviews so I'll keep it short.
I am really happy I got it on sale and I wish I looked at gameplay first and saved even those few euros.
This could have been an amazing game but the endless walking back and forth for quests and everything feeling clunky is sad and I felt like I was wasting my time. Inventory is overwhelming with all the buttons and it's barely to not at all explained, combat is really dull and the only redeeming factor is the story and concept.

I really think the concept and game has promise but read other reviews to see more about the bugs, clipping issues etc.

Alright let me preface this that I *did not* play the game during its disastrous Alpha/Open Beta stages, but I did follow the struggles of it, since, when We Happy Few was first announced, the whole plot and aesthetics of the alt-dystopian 1960s Britain really caught my eye and I was hoping to obtain and play it for myself at some point.

...when it popped up in my radar during the Steam Winter Sale, well, I decided no time like the present, and hey, maybe 4 years had ironed out a lot of that original disaster. And if it hadn't, well, the sale price meant it wouldn't be a massive loss, right?

Much like the similarly maligned No Man's Sky (which I have also played), I see an indie game that was hyped up to be a AAA-grade title. Now whether this was by one of its developers, or various reviewers, or both; I don't know; but this definitely seems to be where the vast majority of negative reactions have come from. People going in with unrealistic expectations and lofty ideals of what the game *should* be based upon that overhyping.

And I'll say it: it's definitely not a AAA title. There are bugs, there are flaws. Like many others, I admit, the world does feel quite a bit empty at times, even if I do think that kind of adds onto the 'aesthetic' - and it *does* feel like a lot more work was put into Arthur's quests and story than Sally and Ollie's chapters. And sometimes, yes, the mechanics do get a little cumbersome, because god help me, Sally's inventory management nearly killed me so many times before I got a handle on it.

That being said, *for* an indie title, especially one primarily backed through Kickstarter, this game is FANTASTIC.

Over the years, I've seen so many KS projects crash and burn even when they did make their goals. And I have to say, We Happy Few might have crashed on its own launch, but it proceeded to pick itself up, dust itself off, and push through its struggles to make something great of itself.

The characters, the story, the world, all of it is so good. I found myself playing for hours on end, slowly chipping away at each character's particular traumas and the horrors of the post-war Britain because I was just so hooked and had to find out more of the bigger picture. From what I can tell, the gameplay improved immensely from its early days (love the storage and fast travel systems), and the black humor makes for some very appropriate mood whiplash.
And each DLC brings its own unique story and mechanics to the table, from the Jules Verne-esque wacky sci-fi adventure of They Came From Below, to the hellish-psychedelic murder mystery of Lightbringer, to the utter tragedy that is We All Fall Down as we finally dive into the ultimate self-destruction of Wellington Wells.

Hell, Julian Casey's performance as Uncle Jack *alone* makes this game so worth it. That man ran the whole gamut from heartbreaking to terrifying all on his own, which is not something you can usually *say* about the acting for a video game NPC.

Now, do I think it's worth a full $60? Mmm. I don't want to be harsh, but no, it's not, even if I did end up loving it. I'd probably put it at about half that, but I can't fault them for trying to make a profit when they've clearly put in so much effort into making the game itself good after it had such a rough start.

(Just, don't do what some other games have done and apparently decide you were and still are worth $40+ for over a decade when you weren't even worth that ON RELEASE. Looking at you, [PROTOTYPE 2].)

Regardless - if you've been considering whether or not you should get We Happy Few, but have reservations after the negative backlash that came with its initial launch, I implore you, even if you get it on sale/deep discount, to try it.

Who knows, it might bring you as much Joy as it did me.

This is a game that has some awesome parts (Voice Acting and Settings/concept), but that has a main problem for me. It does have crafting as core mechanics, and it's something that doesn't fit at all the depth of the story and the everything around it. It's just wrong. This game shouldn't need to get you nerdy and brainful while all around you are dosing their happiness drugs. It really feels that the story/settings and the gameplay are dissociated. The game is beautiful looking, creepy AF but in a very well crafted way, but unfortunately i couldn't bring myself to play with the 2nd and 3rd characters for multiple reasons.
First of all I was getting bored by the sameness of the gameplay and then i was thrown from the 1st character, well rounded and easy to play, into the 2nd one, that is absolutely the opposite. The 2nd character has mechanics that I won't spoil, that are pretty frustrating, without bringing much in terms of feeling and flair.
All in all, with the current price on display, it's totally worth a try, but well, expect to be confused by what the game promises to be and what the game really is. Gets a 70/100 from me, but only if you buy it for less than 10 euros.

Did you ever wanted to want to walk through a retrofuturistic 1960s England were drugs rule the street and being antidrug is a crime? Well you are in look, here is the game for you.
Basically this is a first person melee survival game with a story that is split into three different storys were you play three different charakters which all have their pros and cons.
The graphic is not perfect and I have found more than once floating grass textures but the game has his own style which is unique.
Combat is only average in my opinion you have some moves but basically at the end grenades are just your best friend in the end. The game can also be played without killing NPC which results in some very funny looking weapons.
Stealth is also a part of the game it works most of the time - going in Baseballbat blazing is just often the more faster way.
And yeah the game is full of drunk trips, also some of the sidequests are just brilliant. Also every NPC has a name - not sure if they are unique.
Just to say it the game is not bugfree for example some NPC are just really into walking into the walls are sitting in the air and the game crashed sometimes.

Absoutlly loved all the acts. Each time I finished an act I couldn't help but tear up a bit thinking about how beautiful the section was. Although I found act 2 and 3 to be lack luster in terms of length compared to Act 1: Author.

Beautiful game though, I hope the creators make a 2nd game. I've brainedstormed a good amount of ideas for this we happy few 2

I really wanted to recommend this game, but I don’t feel that I can… This really falls down to what you enjoy and want from a game as to if it’s for you or not.

This is a long review so if you want to know why, buckle up.

Set in an alternative timeline British town, where everything is perfect so long as you take your happy pills, the game follows several characters through their adventurous efforts to escape and their reasons for doing so.
The stories themselves are interesting an engaging, the characters are unreliable narrators, making for some (often predictable, but nevertheless) interesting twists and turns along the way.

The base game features ‘3’ story lines (actually it features one ((more or less)) complete story line, one rushed story line, and one ‘you didn’t even try’ story line) with characters who’s adventures really could have interacted more. There are several DLC’s that offer more, but on the basis of the base game, I wouldn’t buy them unless they were extremely cheap.

So onto the points.

Pros:
The story and its narration has a lot to offer. The unreliable narrators, and nature of the drugs they have been taking leads to a situation allowing you to be surprised by the revelations.
The music is fitting and well themed, helping to generate a sense of atmosphere.
The way the lore is scattered, the foreshadowing is applied, and the story unfolds is well paced, leading you to want to know what happens next.
The fitting in mechanic and the drug mechanic were interesting and novel.

Cons: (roll your sleeves up, there are loads)
The bugs. The game is so buggy it’s ridiculous. From broken main quests, to broken textures, to clipping and world falling, to floating assets, to unequipable items, trapped inventories, inventories getting heavier when unloaded, broken crafting systems, broken save points, broken skill trees, flying!, NPC’s not showing up in cut scenes, NPC’s not delivering dialogue, NPC’s showing up in cut scenes without their face/hair/body/speech, cut scenes not ending, cut scenes not starting, cut scenes starting before you finish the mission, and the game randomly deciding to just kill you dead with no reason.

And these are just the bugs that *I encountered*… I have to wonder if the game received any play testing at all.

The A.I is terrible. I don’t mean in a bug ridden sense (which it is) I just mean in general.
The stealth mechanic is so poorly done it made me laugh, from the bad A.I being so easy to fool to the fact that once you’re a target for one group, EVERYONE wants a piece of you… Even NPC’s that usually fight each other will work together to spank you, for example.
The combat mechanics are terrible, with the controls being about as responsive as a full oil tanker traveling at speed.
The 'fitting in' mechanics could have provided so much gameplay, but were nothing more than combat starters… they were utterly wasted.
The second and third acts combined don’t have half the content of the first act. Which is a real shame because if they’d been done properly, the game could have been really, really, memorable, for all the right reasons.
More than half the game is running back and forth between quest locations, purposefully spread out in the least helpful manner possible, forcing you to go massively out of your way for side quests, and traipse backwards and forwards for main quests, that somehow almost never coincide with side quest locations.
The open world sandbox style game was a terrible mistake for this game. Perhaps if they had populated it more thoroughly it would have worked, but minutes and minutes of empty space filled with reused assets in every direction was a horrible, horrible, design choice.
The musical score is so limited it ends up driving you a little mad… which could have played well into the game given the dystopian layout, unfortunately it wasn’t well done enough to seem intentional. It’s clear they just didn’t want to put more in. Which is a shame as what’s present is atmospheric and fits well.
The use of outfits and being able to swap between them instantly means that if you carry a few around, you can do more or less whatever you want. Just a few rules surrounding it like time to change or not being able to while people are watching would have solved this.
The inventory management and crafting systems feel tacked on and undeveloped.

Suggested improvements:
This game has REAL potential, the story is good, the ideas are good, and the mechanics could be really intriguing with a few small changes.
My first and biggest suggestion would be to move the game away from the open world to a more level based one. Eliminating the need for the transport system and instead using the safe houses as save points and mini hubs. This focus on levels could allow for resource management to be stricter, and allow for the game to track assets, allowing the different act’s stories to intertwine even more, and presenting an interesting challenge as the game progresses as some assets would already have been stripped by other characters on their run through an area. It would also allow the characters stories to have much more influence on each other as the times they went from place to place, or showed up in each other’s company would be fixed, giving even more weight to the situations where they misinterpret or outright ignore things the other has said.
Next, and it barely needs saying, FIX. THE. BUGS.
For the sake of brevity, my final suggestion is to increase the importance of fitting in. The system of clothing is a good start, adding head and foot wear acceptable in each place with further articles accepted in each area could be good too, each one contributing to an acceptance level, the articles and overall level themselves contributing to the level of politeness, help, and side quests available to the player.

Overall recommendation:
The thing is, I enjoyed this game.
No, that’s not accurate, I enjoyed this interactive story *despite* its gameplay.
It’s not a good ‘game’ but it is a decent story with an interesting delivery idea.
Ultimately, all a non-competitive single player game is, is an interactive story, and this one kept me wanting to know what happens next. At some points I had to fight the game to get it to tell me, at some points I had to fight brain meltingly boring and pointless running around for hours to make it tell me, but I genuinely wanted to know. I wasn’t satisfied at the end, because it feels rushed out, like they started a 20 minute presentation then were told at the five minute mark they had two left and blurted out the bones of the idea and were shouting ‘the end’ as they were forced off stage. *But it -was- a good idea.*
And so if you’re not a fussy enjoyer of stories, this game is 100% for you. But if you want to have fun playing a game, if you want it to be challenging in the right ways, if you find bugs and immersion shattering issues left right and centre too off putting, then its 100% not.
At the time of writing, the game is £45. In my opinion, it’s worth £5. £10 tops. I haven’t played the DLC, but until they’re less than a quid each (1£), I won’t be buying them on the back of the main game.

Picked up a key for $5 and I went in not expecting much but I actually ended up liking the game. It was fun for what it was. I read about game breaking bugs and I went in hoping not to experience any but did. Got to an issue where you need a bucket from Dr. Faradey. I saw this was an issue all the way back from 2016 and the game still has this problem. The solutions were to ask quite a few times which didn't solve it or to enable dev command which I couldn't figure out to do. So with that said... can't recommend the game. It has game halting issues from 4 years ago. I did enjoy what I played tho and whatever I guess I got $5 worth of game out of it but seriously if the devs couldn't fix the bug why not just patch in a bucket there and be done with it. I read they were working on a sequel which I would have definitely been interested in but considering they couldn't fix this game, i'll take that as a red flag and stay away from future products

As much as I've wanted to enjoy this game, I just can't.
The immersion breaking bugs are everywhere, cut scenes with characters facing the wrong way, or not even talking, floating NPCs, floating Flower Pots, floating street signs.
Everything past Arthur's story feels like an after thought. The crafting is pretty much useless and becomes more of a burden than an accessory. The game has been out two years at this point, instead of pumping out DLCs and more things to pay for. Why not fix the the bugs that are already there. Maybe I wouldn't be so upset if I didn't see that there was a we happy few 2 in production smh.
I cannot recommend anyone spend the 60$ on this game. If it's not on sale for under 10$ don't bother. Go watch a playthrough of Arthur's story cause that's the only interesting part.
GearBox, I hate you.

I really like the concept and feel of this game, it has a definite likeness to Bioshock but it set in a twisted alternative reality 60's style Britain. I love many of the design choices and the characters, along with some of the very creepy settings such as a house with a puzzle that has a record player playing at slow speed so the song on the record sounds distorted and really unsettling.

However all is not perfect with this game, as the whole thing starts to become rather 'samey' after several hours. While I want to find out where the story goes I found myself getting bored with being put into new areas that feel exactly like the previous area I was in.

While you character does progress and upgrade, it never really feels like they do and it has no tangible impact on game play or any sense of actual progression. I feel like this game could have been 10 hours long and that would have been fine, there is nothing that would make me want to play any DLC or a part 2.

One thing I have to mention is the performance, I have a pretty decent PC but even with a 2080 TI the FPS drops well below 60 FPS in some areas (@1440p). Nothing about the graphics or game world should have that big of an impact on my performance so it appears it is just terrible optimisation.

Overall I think this is an experience worth checking out, there is a lot to like about this game so I would recommend it on sale for that reason. But I have reached the point where I am bored and don't feel motivated to grind through yet another area that is just like the other area, or suffer another joy withdrawl and so on.

If you can get this game at a significant discount then pick it up, just don't expect it to keep you interested for many hours

The first 2 characters, Arthur and Sally, were quite fun to play through in my opinion, pushing aside how underdeveloped and buggy this game is. However, Ollie, the 3rd character, I found to be extremely boring and I had to leave the game as a whole after about an hour. Since then it has been sat in my steam library, unfinished, for months. If you do want to play it still, please get it on sale, it is far from worth the £45 price tag (I got it on sale thankfully). The lazy design means you'll often see a lot of repeated npc models which ruins the immersion since you'll see the exact same old lady about 5 times on the same street. Very disappointing when this could've been such an enjoyable game from start to finish.

Play Bioshock instead.

Positive, but... I would read this to save myself some time. I will try not to give away spoilers, but be warned that the game mechanics and a specific mission will be motioned.

I REALLY wanted this game. When it came out, the reviews were ''it's plagued with bugs'', so I sadly waited a bit. I have 100 hours played and have not yet completed the first character's story. Why? Because a bug forced me to restart!

-Inconsistent experience: Deceased vs unconscious: Why do you not use the same definitions as everyone else, and why does unconscious vary depending on the character?! Deceased means dead. Not coming back. Unconscious means that they are temporarily out of action and will wake up. From the info that I found, if you leave the area for a little while, unconscious people are supposed to respawn. Some do, some do not. They come back in a different body sometimes. Unconscious and back as a Black person when you were White. Makes total sense... ... ...

-Bug: Then, explain this BUG which forced me to start a new playthrough: One of the meat delivery person never showed up again. I had not killed her. She had been knocked unconscious by me while I was robbing her house (previously). She still showed up as an ''impatient person'', but never showed up to turn in the delivery. I tried sleeping it off/2 months total in game time. She never came back. This quest is required to get more quests from the butcher. It's also a quest nearing the end of the first character's story, and it was quite upsetting. If it happens again during this playthrough, I give up.

-Time saver for players: Do not explore the areas of land that are off the main roads until you get to Dr. F. You will see cars and bombs and won't be able to interact with them. You will then have to explore those areas ALL OVER AGAIN. I wasted so much time! Dr. F being so far away into the game really seems like it's a decision made to force you to play more/waste more time looking for cars and another item (cars say that you need this when clicking on them. I don't think the other item does so I am trying to make it spoiler-free.

-Time waste: Do not bother trying to get on top of houses unless the house is marked on your map. In 2 playthrough's as the first game char, I only found 3 items up there (that you get plenty elsewhere). Wasted hours trying to get on top of all of them. You will also get stuck at times by falling through the world/being stuck inside the house.

-Bug: There are items that are meant to interact with that you cannot get.

-Bug or..? Even with the best ''stealth perks'' and the best ''stealth clothing'', someone on the third floor of a house that you're robbing can start talking to you/know that you're there if you're not crouching (EVEN IF YOU HAVEN'T TOUCHED ANYTHING). Are they psychic? Others will freeze right in front of you as you're robbing them blind and won't do anything for minutes. Random people will sometimes come and attack at times if they start the alarm. Aren't these people supposed to be home at night?

-Bug or..? Following the last one, why are these people not in bed at 2am? ''I should check and see what the wife is cooking?!'' ''I wonder what's on TV...'' (not the specific phrase for this one to not give away the name of an NPC). I rob during the day now since I will render them unconscious no matter what. Good luck getting the achievement The Saint (not killing anyone)...because it seems that rendering them unconscious counts as killing them. I do not have the patience to come back twenty times to rob a house because there is no stealth/sound-making by your char/sound that NPC's hear balance.

-Time saver: When doing the army camp, do it ALL. If you do not, you cannot come back until later in the game.

-Bottles: You will not split NPC's with those...even with the perk. If you're going for the Saint achievement, I guess that it's what you can use it for. If not, you can use them to make NPC's or a group of NPC's move a tiny bit. A stealth game (if you're going for this type of play) without a way to split groups of NPC's is...odd, to say the least. Sure, you can take one down from behind, be left with two, run, hide...rinse and repeat. You will be seen and NPC's can start an alarm.

-Save system: it's a weird system. It's hard to explain. You will see what I mean when you play. My advice is to rely on your own saves (manual save) and to use up those save slots, because you may need to go back in time further than the last 3 saves per save slot allow you to do.

The story isn't bad and it's an OK game. This game is worth it if it's on sale (not at full price).

This was a beautiful game. Wonderful graphics, and a great mix of gameplay and storytelling. The DLCs were also excellent. Definitely worth playing if you love first person story driven games. The gameplay is a mashup of a first person RPG with melee combat, combined with stealth gameplay similar to the Dishonored games, and crafting in a survival roguelike style. Everything came together really well. The beatles style 1970's music was also amazing.

This game is terrible. I'm not really sure why so many users have posted positive reviews. Basically this game is a lazy rip off of games like Bioshock, Dishonored and Prey. It's like a rotten apple. It looks nice and shiny on the outside, but inside it's rotten. The developers make it look like it's going to be a polished AAA style game, but when you get farther into it you realize everything is broken or underdeveloped. The AI is either broken or poorly programmed. The mission design is lazy and the world is devoid of anything other than empty space and the same NPCs wandering around aimlessly. The looting/crafting system is tedious and the combat is so simplistic it's basically button mashing. It's absurd the developers tried to charge $60 for this game. I bought it on sale and I won't waste my time finishing it. Do not buy this game, it's a waste of time.

Alright. This game is definitely not worth $60.00. I will get into the specifics below, but for a quick explanation, the game is way too buggy and is practically a walking simulator in most cases. If you really want this game, wait for a sale (I got it for $8.99 for Thanksgiving Sale), I wouldn't even value it at $30.00.

Specifics: BUGS (Warning, spoilers. I did censor all the spoilers though!)

While I played the game, I encountered about 6 major bugs that are inexcusable.

- If you have a body next to you and you are in a vent, carrying the body (while still in the vent) will force you to stand up and you can see straight through the map. (I only did this in one vent since I didn't want to fall through the map, so this might be a specific-only thing. I will fact-check this soon.)

-
After escaping the Military Camp (and leaving through the tunnels), a soldier kept chasing me somehow, and then teleported through the Military Camp (somehow?) and then stabbed me to near death. It was stuck on my head for a little while, but I managed to shake him off and escape quick.
-
I was being chased while doing a night mission, and I then hid inside of a trash-can and escaped everybody. Then, out of nowhere a Bobby just appeared in the alley, literally looking right at me. I did not see him on my screen at all (he was in front of me), and the moment I left I got beaten pretty goddamn bad. (I can tell he appeared because of that fade in transition thing)
Lacks towards Quality of Life:

- A disappointing tool is the repair kit. It is very VERY misleading. If you think it can repair weapons, nope! Their only purpose is literally story-related content or side-mission related things. I saved like
4 Lee Enfield Rifles
and finding out that I couldn't repair them was incredibly annoying.

- There are plenty of missions that make the game a walking simulator. I literally had to walk 1 km (1000 m) just to get
that purple energy stuff
for
that scientist lady
in order to
actually progress the game story.
Really goddamn annoying, I don't care about exploring the stupidly huge map or
'digging up' all the dig-spots. It's just pointless by the time I'm at that sort of game stage!
- If I make a mistake or accidentally jump or make some noise, there is no feature for me to quick-load my last save. If everybody is mad at me, then I'm literally
fucked.
The developers should understand that some of us just want that perfect stealth mission, why can't we just learn from our mistakes and do a quick replay? It is just a video game after all!

Story Issues (so far):

- I only have one big problem with this story. So, this entire thing will be protected with a spoiler.
The papier mache tanks is one of the biggest turning points of the story. It's when Arthur and his soldier friend realize that all the tanks that 'invaded' Britain were all fake, and that had the British known, they would've fought back and not surrendered so easily. In real life World War II, this was an actual concept but I don't think it worked out too well because of environmental concerns such as rain or snow ruining the paper and breaking the feign. So you're telling me that Britain, a super rainy country, had literally NO RAIN for 20 years? And it took 20 YEARS just for someone to realize ACCIDENTALLY that the tanks were fake? If it rained AT ALL during the FIRST WEEK of the British surrender, THEY WOULD'VE JUST REALIZED THEY'RE FAKE! None of this story would've ever happened, and life would most likely be normal as it is in our current universe. (I know a lot of caps lock, but I'm not mad, just for emphasis).
So final rating: 3.6/10
Don't buy this unless it is less than $15.00 USD

Lovely day for it? Well... depends...

So I finally played this game, been hyped for it since the announcement but I like to play my games fnished, including DLC. So I got it discounted and first things first: For the first game of a company, no matter the size and the amount of employees... to pull of a game the size of this, fully functional and with the amount of different mechanics it has, bravo, that is really impressive. The story sells the game and is absolutely worth it, one of the best I have seen in a while. The pacing of the main missions is phenomenal, just brilliant! And some of the sidequest are also just... you will remember them, trust me!

However...
The game gets very boring, very fast. The main game just combines too many elements together an puts that in an open world scenario that just feels stretched and empty for no good reason, the open world feels really uninspired after a while. Survival mechanics just slow everything down, craft this, don't get thirsty, remember to sleep, etc. Even on easy mode where this doesn't come into affect that much, it is still pretty tedious. Now... you might get used to these mechanics, but the biggest problem the game has is within the plot, so from here on I have to bring some spoilers:
The game is divided in 3 Acts. Usually this is a good thing, because a good story just simply has three Acts. BUT in this game, that means you get a new Character for every act. So now you have a fully upgraded Character, sick crafting skills, and you explored the whole map, spent 20+ hours... aaaand now you have to do all of that again. TWICE!!!! You can see in the percentage of the achievements, that half the people stopped playing after Act 1. To be fair, Acts 2 and 3 are not as long as Act 1, but if you want to collect everything and get every sidequest... you better have dedication, and I didn't. So if you read this far, don't bother for the exploration in Acts 2 and 3. Just Google where the cool Sidequests are and do those, but otherwise just stick to the story. Because the story is worth it!
I also wanna dedicate a paragraph to the DLC, because usually it's just a fun little side note and doesn't connect with the game too much, but these ones... oh boy! Seriously, if you get bored by the main game and can't be asked any more, try the DLC! No survival, no open world, just classic linear story-based Action-Adventure, and all 3 of these DLC are absolutely fantastic!

All in all, I do recommend the game, maybe wait for a discount. And even though it has its flaws... again: this is the first game of this company, funded by kickstarter, and all the flaws that the main game had, they listened to the feedback and made perfect DLCs without the flaws and all the good. So I'm really excited what they come up with next! Right as Rain, innit?

It should've been good, but it is not, not even close to it. Bugs and crashes are going to follow you everywhere. The fighting system is repetetive as hell. Exploration is boring, as there is not much things to be discovered and area is pretty big. It is that bad, not worth trying even with discount.

We Happy Few overall is a horrible game, it's super repetitive and is a buggy mess that requires the will of God to push yourself through to the end. Admittedly, it has an amazing concept and a really good story but the immersion-breaking bugs and lack of care make it impossible to enjoy yourself. There is a good game somewhere in there but it's just too hard to find to be worth your time.

The game basically has zero respect to your time.
I wish this game had a story mode, without all the crafting and Joy management. Because with it, it's unbearably tedious.
You have to take Joy pills all the time, and they last about 2-3 minutes of real time, and then you get an overdose, and have to hide, because all NPCs are getting angry with you really quickly, and then the'll beat you to death. Such fun.
Collecting 40 foxgloves to advance the storyline, was this really, really necessary?
It's a shame, since I really liked the characters and story. But as a game, it's simply horrible.

Unbearably boring. It sells itself as an open world survival game with a slick gimmick, but it's not. It's a linear journey through a broken world that's entirely scripted from beginning to end. The world is very limited and it just isn't clear what the devs were trying to build.

This game is everything but fun.
Enemies don't respond very well to your stealth approach and, you always become overwhelmed by flooding NPCs if you choose to go loud. Game mechanics are redundant and has way more negative impacts than positive ones, which means you will have to look after your status like driving an airplane.
Story is truly uninspiring, silly to some extent. Objectives are repeated in similar ways again and again. Can't recommend even when it's on sale.

Monty Python, No One Lives Forever and 1984 were having an awesome party when Deus Ex showed up uninvited and made things awkward...

This game has an awesome premise, great moments, fantastic worldbuilding and is distilled elixir of the '60s by way of The Prisoner, and it's definitely worth playing, but it's shackled to somewhat awkward gameplay that doesn't quite know what it wants. Or rather, it seems that what it really wants is to be Fallout 4 The Holy Grail edition, with all the crafting and alternate routes and branching abilities, it even goes to the extreme of forcing us to eat, drink and sleep regularly... but then it remembers that what really matters is the story and so it refuses to make its gameplay hard enough to actually NEED all the crap that you can find, craft etc. The penalties for not sleeping/drinking/eating reliably kick in at the worst of times, but you can pause game to remedy this, and food and drink are too easy to find to make this an actual 'survival mechanic', so it winds up being merely annoying. I would have much preferred if they sheered it of all the 'wannabe-sandbox' crap and made this a simple point-and-click puzzle game with sneak routes instead.

It's a long game, and not always in the best of ways: a LOT of side quests look like they might have promising payouts but usually don't, either in terms of rewards (which, as mentioned, you don't really need to finish the game) or in terms of storytelling (a lot of the side quests are actually kind of blah, which is a crime in a game that is so visually imaginative.) You can skip the side quests and looting and such, I suppose... but there are, damn it all, a couple of quests in game that DO require some of the crap you accumulate, so you can't just focus on the main quest either. But if you don't mind having to backtrack - painlessly, there's a fairly decent way to get around in map - to pick up the 2-3 side quests that'll help you as indicated by a walkthrough, you can focus on the meat of the game, and you will not feel robbed for all that, this game is quite long anyway. In fact I'm taking a break now that I've finished act 1 because the idea of all that sneaking/gathering/reading/discovering/questing tires me a little, but I do want to finish the story eventually. You can also turn down the difficulty, not because it's too hard - I breezed through on Normal - but because that'll hopefully skip a lot of the faffing about and let you get to the good stuff.

The good stuff is why I still recommend the game. The world is AMAZING, so inventive. If you ever liked The Prisoner, with it's saccharine psychedelic cheer covering psychological manipulation and a deep gut-wrenching tragedy, then you will like this game.

I only recommend this game at a discount.

For what it's worth I managed to finish the first act. To be honest, the only thing that kept me playing was the story, even thought at times it was boring. I think I had different expectations of this game, I thought it was more of a rpg, a story that you follow, and I thought the idea of confirming was fun. But it felt a bit weird, this is a stealth game apparently, with a big open map that has nothing really in it, and you craft some things here and there. It also has somehow survival elements to it as well, which felt rather bizzare. I don't really understand what this game is trying to be, to be honest I felt like, and had the impression that, I was going to play a story and learn about the world like that. But instead that felt like an optional sidequest, instead there was this massive weirdly empty map that looks like it had been put no thought into with some fruits and bushes to harvest. I don't know man, like the game isn't inherintly bad, but it feels like it's trying to be so many things that it can't do any of it right. It was a great idea, and I still think the underlying story was fun and witty, but it was a bit hard to understand and everything around felt very meaningless.

There's a lot to like about this game, there really is, but the aspects of this game that put me off were so bad that it made not want to play the game anymore which is really disappointing.

To start off I loved the first part of the main game. I thought the story, gameplay, and design of the game were all really well done and engaging. I sunk the majority of my playtime into this section and had no regrets about it. it was totally worth the time even though it could be a bit repetitive at times.

The second part of the game is where it started to lose me. I've got no issue if a game wants to shift gameplay styles between characters, but the shift in this section was so big that I felt like everything I had grown accustomed to was just thrown out the window and I had to just resort to buying my way through the whole section rather than strategically building my inventory. On top of that this is where I felt like all the missions were just copy and paste fetch quests and I just slowly lost the will to play as everything just became a slog to get through. I mustered up the will to try to play the third part and got through one mission and just couldn't take it anymore.

The most disappointing part of all this to me is that I have all the DLC and now have no desire to even try to play them even though they look like they would be more fun than what i had already played. I feel like this game started out strong but maybe tried to do a little too much as it was developed in early access and lost itself a bit along the way. I understand why people love this game but unfortunately I also understand why people can't stand this game and that's why I feel like I just can't recommend it to people

We Happy Few is a psychedelic survival game set in a retro-futuristic 1960's England. The game is split into 3 acts, where we play as different characters each act, and see their stories overlap during certain points. Each character has their own unique skill tree, strengths, and weaknesses. Note that nothing carries over between characters, and each act is separated to different save slots. I find it best to play this game as a stealth game, since the combat is rather hard and dangerous, so sneak around or do silent takedowns. If you failed at stealth and got noticed, you can hide and come back later, the NPCs won't recognize you.

The best part of WHF is the aesthetics, it reminds me of one of my favorite movies, A Clockwork Orange. While the exteriors might seem gloomy, the interiors look really cool. However, the world uses procedural generation rather than a proper map, so it might seem weird. For example, Building A in Act 1 is in District A, but in Act 2, Building A can be in District B with no explanation. The map is also rather large, but feels monotonous, as many buildings look the same, and point of interests or unique buildings are far apart from each other. In my opinion, WHF should've used a proper and consistent map.

A lot of people seem to think We Happy Few feels like an unfinished game. Sadly, I have to agree. Other than the constantly changing maps, there's also the issue of NPCs having very few character models with the exception of several important characters, even though they all wear masks. NPCs are also buggy, where some of them may get stuck or suddenly teleport out of their paths. Although I love the story, Acts 2 and 3 are considerably shorter than Act 1, where Act 1 is as long as 2 combined with 3. Despite all its flaws, the story, world, and gameplay of We Happy Few is great, and definitely a must-play if you like stealth games.

I rate this game 5/10

I had been a follower of this games development even before its 2016 release. The trailers and concept of We Happy few greatly excited me. That being said I then actually played the game. It started off very strong and i was very into it, however the more i played the more the negatives started seeping through the cracks.

1) The game is very easy. Not once did i find a challenge where i had to struggle to survive or even beat a boss. As a result the gameplay quickly become boring and instead of hiding and steathily avoiding fights i just tackled them head on, and came out on top every time.

2) The game is listed as a survival, horror game. I didnt have to struggle to survive and I would not say its in the horror/thriller genre. Its just not scary, or even creepy

3)The story didnt grab you. The concept and gameplay mechanics were beautifully done, only to be let down by a mediocre story. The plot doesnt flow and most of the missions are boring and repetitive.

Pros:
-Good gameplay
-Good voice-acting
-Exiting graphics
-Lots to do and explore

Cons
-Too easy
-Bad story
-Boring after awhile

Overall the game was a good concept but poorly executed.

Note: I picked this up on a sale but this is definitely not worth the full price tag.

I'd recommend the game on sale for 30 bucks. We Happy Few has its ups and lows. When the game came out of early access it was buggy and performed poorly. I think most of that now has been fixed. This game is memorable and has a pretty good plot. The games biggest strength is the games art direction. The games setting, characters and themes are quite unqiue and I haven't seen a game quite like this. We happy few is being compared to bioshock but it pretty much is an unfair comparison because the game plays nothing like bioshock. One this game is not a first person shooter and you don't have supernatural powers. you just play three everyday citizans of the fictional town wellington Wells a fictional town, based any small english town. The reason this game is getting mixed reviews is because normies who didn't follow the game had unreasonably high expectations that this game was going to be the next Bioshock. The game was advertised a sandbox survival sim.
- The games strengths
1. unqiue setting and story and characters akin to George Orwell's 1984 mixed with Brave New World
2. the games length pretty long 30 plus hours and has three character campaigns. Arthur Hastings campaign is around 12 to 15 hours. Sally boylle's campagin is 6 to 7 hours and Oilver's is around 3 making his campaign the shortest. Sally Boylles and Arthurs campaigns are the most enjoyable.

The games drawbacks
1. lack of enemy varitiy. while enemy npcs are creative looking most of them don't stick out except the bobby or the doctor enemy types and the rare teacup vehicle enemy during the night. the docter enemy types don't wear the plague docter masks dispite being advertised in the launch trailer.
2. lack of open world enviroment varity.
there is essientanal three different enviroments in the game. The village which every building is randomized every time you start a new game. and almost every building looks mostly identical to the next building. alot of copy and paste buildings . same with some of the downer areas. The only some what unquie open world area of the city was the the parade district which was disappointing because there was only one side misson in that area and rarely any enterable buildings there ethier. They could have kept the randomization elements in the the game but just had most of the buildings handmade.
3. Combat
the games combat is a mixed bag. its quite average
4. enemy ai not that great
ai is not the worst but its not the best.
overall I'd reccomend this game on its story its character and its world and unquie theme. I hope to see a return to the We Happy few world in a sequel or a prequel as this game. but unfortuntently I don't know if compulsion plans to make a sequel even though I think it could beinfit from it. The things that hold we happy few down more than anything is the copy paste buildings, the enemy varity and some of its quest design.

I've wanted this game ever since i saw its teasers years back. Its a good game with a great setting and style. The main story is pretty good and is split between 3 acts. You will be doing a lot of in game running as the world outside of the cities is fairly empty.
The DLCs are the real winners. 3 short stories that don't have anything in the way of sidequests really make for an enjoyable experience.

I really, really like this game. But I can't recommend it. The story is good, the art style is good, the gameplay is where things start to fall a little short. The game has a lot of bugs and glitches and the world feels plain and underdeveloped. This game is also pretty expensive, it's $59.99 -tax and with dlc you're looking at a little over $100. The dlc isn't required at all, I still had a lot of fun without it. I did enjoy playing this game though. It has a lot of quests and things to do, lots of weapons and items and recipes and a lot of the characters were likeable. So if you're going for a good story and you don't mind the high price, I would say go for it, but it's buggy and underdeveloped. I feel wrong recommending it. Sorry if my review is all over the place.

If you can get it on sale price, yes its worth it. Paying anymore makes you resent the game. I love this game and the stories. Could it be better, sure, could most things in life?, always. But this is well worth a go if you enjoy a dystopian world with a twist. With each story line you begin to delve deeper into a society lost by a fabricated image of perfection and conformity. There is no compassion only the rules you must live by and obey. If you don't conform, you are the downer... sound familiar? TAKE YOUR JOY!

Honestly I'm no good at writing reviews but I really enjoyed this game, It's real nice how they have you play multiple characters to see how their stories ended up, and how they all linked to one another.

I really love the dystopian theme in this game, you can choose to take 'joy' and see things as beautiful and as if nothing is wrong with the environment, or let yourself be withdrawn from joy and remember the awful past you once had.

Even though i was gifted the season pass for the DLC to this game, having completed the DLC i think it's definitely worth buying, perhaps on sale as its quite pricey or buy it for its full price. It gives you extra characters to play, which are included in the main story. They are not what i expected gameplay-wise as theres completely new environments with the DLC.

As for the main game cost I think its better off waiting for a sale, i got mine for around $25? rather than paying for the full price it is abit expensive since the gameplay is only around 20-30hours. Those aren't completely accurate hours though as i like to take my time exploring every bit of the environment and also achievement hunting.

Whilst the environments can be a bit repetitive i wasn't too fussed as they still added unique bits around, buildings you could explore, or random side quests to complete.

I'd probably rate this game around an 8/10, the graphics are nice, the stories are good, and just overall enjoyable.

It's a really fun game to sink time into and has a very expansive world and story line that I grinded through for days. I really enjoy the art style and the mechanics in the game. I'll admit there are a few bugs and gameplay elements that are kinda scuffed, but besides that I had a lot of fun playing through the story line. I know the game got backlash at launch but after some improvements this game became a work of art and one of my favorite story lines of a game I've played through. I'd rate the game a solid 8/10.

Nice story, could only handle act 1 out of 3.
Towns are just too big, don't wanna be spending half my time walking to each small quest, pretty much the main reason I cba continuing after act 1.
AI is super buggy too, throw some objects to distract the enemies, sometimes they would just blink out of existence and BAZINGA behind you.
If you can look past some bugs and extra travel time, its a pretty good game eh Barry?

I thoroughly enjoyed We Happy Few, even if the DLCs felt entirely different from the main game. I appreciated that everyone was an anti-hero and you slowly unravel these mysteries as you go through the game. I was struck by how Sally's and Arthur's perspective of events differed, and the ways in which their Joy-use affected that. Some quests were crazy fun, like the weird church where you pose as the Austin Powers guy. Others were skippable, like chasing speedy Gonzalez around town. But there is far too much crafting stuff in the game that you'll never really use, especially since some of it is specific to a different character.

While We Happy Few isn’t the first piece of media to focus on dissidents in what’s passed as a utopia on the surface but less so underneath, it does come with doses of good commentary and a world that, in certain instances feels unique. The further you get into the story, the more you learn about each of the three playable characters and watch as they become nuanced individuals whose deeds can end up making you both empathize with and despise their actions.

We Happy Few boasts an open world, in theory, although portions of it are often locked behind quests, which does make it feel like you’re always being, more or less, directed to where you need to go. Side quests pop up naturally while exploring, sometimes only at certain times of day. The problem is that exploration is a drawn out, tedious affair. Aside from the small stamina bar that has characters taking frequent breaks while sprinting, you’re really mostly going through towns that feel empty and fields that feel even emptier. This, in fact, is what you’ll do for most of your time spent with We Happy Few, even after unlocking fast travel points spread across the map.

Benefits of completing all of the missions is the skill points awarded, which can be used to upgrade each of the characters. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses, meaning each has their own playstyle to which players need to adapt. The skill tree is one of the few areas of the game that mostly works as it should. There's the opportunity to build each character to your own specification - stealth players can focus on stealth traits first rather than combat.

One of the things the game does well is to create a damning depiction of the perils of taking hallucinogenic drugs. Joy may well provide a temporary feeling of happiness, you see clouds of butterflies, and you forget how miserable life can be, but the immediate come down makes you feel rotten. Despite your best efforts, the immediate symptoms of withdrawal are noticeable to everyone around you. Drugs affect people differently too - some become immune to its effects, some descend into madness, and others forget how to function properly; none of the effects are positive. Either way, if you're off your Joy or it isn't having the desired effect, all of those who are still taking Joy will happily resort to murder if it means they can stop you from taking away their false idyll.

We Happy Few is an exhibition of pure British witticism and charm and the script services both of those things to an excellent degree.

THE GOOD
- Great and engaging world
- Terrific aesthetic
- Extensive crafting system
- Great story based missions

THE BAD
- Inconsistent and punishing A.I
- Repetitive and similarly designed areas
- Combat can behave unpredictably

8/10

I was really curious about this game but it turned out to be a disapointment...
The saving games dont work properly. I saved in an area and it loaded on a completely different one. Also while doing this it completely turned on the fog in my map ( i dont know if this is a feature, like taking the joy) but i cant see the paths i unlocked before anymore.
Besides these problems the game crashes a LOT, specially while you are hiding.
Maybe i will try it in the future if they fix this bugs but right now no..and i insisted a lot believe me.

Was looking forward to playing this game. Game would not save. tried all of the recommendations on the chat boards and after implementing various changes, the game would still not save. Disappointed, as the game was fun. But after restarting three times I and not being able to save i gave up. Sound track is really good

Dystopian, weird, unpredictable with plot twist, cute graphic, great era and wonderful British accent, overall just my kind of tea, bought it on sale and had so much fun playing it. Mind you, I'm not even high on joy ;)

A really cool game that's actually loads of fun to play but runs like absolute trash. The theme and gameplay are great, albeit a bit rough around the edges when it comes to combat. I would easily 100% recommend this title were it not for the performance problems. In almost all areas of the game. The game's recommended specs are an absolute joke. I am running on an RX 5700, Ryzen 7 2700, 16 GB of RAM, everything. I am well above the recommended specs but most areas in the game consistently dip down to 30 or 45 FPS. It makes the game absolutely unplayable which really sucks because it's so cool.

Don't buy this game, especially not for full price

Many people already stressed their problems with this game, but I was still willing to give this a try. It's not terrible, the basic scenario and parts of the writing are even great. The game that was built around it isn't, though my largest problem aren't even the unnecessary survival mechanics. It's the map design, which is practically non-existent. Everything except for a few buildings and levels in this game is procedurally generated. Sure, there are certain rules according to which the world is created, but it absolutely does not fit to the type of game. Many places in the game, especially those in the wilderness, feel weird and unnatural, and the procedural generation always reuses the sames assets, so you saw pretty much everything the game has to offer visually after a few hours, even though the map is quite huge. Speaking of which, who thought it would be a good idea to make the map this big? Who thought it would be a good idea to force the player to hike kilometers with such an incredibly fast stamina drain? There is a fast-travel system, but unlocking the travel points is often very annoying, and like everything else, they are procedurally generated, so while the game might make sure they are not ridiculously close to each other, the travel points were often either a bit too close or too far away from each other in my generated world. Also, who thought it would be a good idea to force the player to not sprint in towns so he stays anonymous? Sure, it's unrealistic that people wouldn't be confused to see somebody running around like a madman in their cozy town, but this made this game even more of a chore. In the end, I used cheat codes to beat this, just so I could get to the end and move on to another game, first god mode, later I even used clipping mode to not have to run kilometres in absolute boredom. This kind of hurts to say because I really like We Happy Few's themes and message, but please: Don't play this.
Unless you really, really, really, really, really need to sacrifice hours playing a bad game for a somewhat good story, that, like anything else in this game, mostly does not live up to expectations.

I love this game, but it is NOT worth the full price. Let me explain my issues with it:

There are TONS of bugs. The Butcher's Apprentice quest for me is bugged; I have no trash bin in my play through and I cannot use the ladder to escape. The meat boy quest I had to restart a few times just because the guy I had to talk to was invisible. Mostly, there are visual bugs i.e. people being invisible, not being where they need to be, and so on.

This game is very challenging, one of the great aspects of it. You actually have to pay attention; it is no walk in the park. I think the bugs really put me off because I love this game yet no fixes have been rolled out for known issues.

I'm not one for posting reviews but this game blew me away. The story and the world, all of the DLCs... I've had a ball playing it, every minute of it.

First, the negatives that may sway you - the gameplay is not, perhaps, the biggest draw card. The combat is very button mash-y for the most part and the survival aspect is okay but not earth-shattering (that said, I had fun eating and collecting everything I could because I'm weird like that). There are some glitches here and there, like people sitting on the air next to the bench they're supposed to be on, but I didn't have anything too terrible. Oh, and a couple of mechanics (like a certain motilene sucker-upper) need you to hold down, say, the 'E' key long after the action has finished to actually progress. That stumped me for a while.

BUT MY GOD, THE STORY. THE ART. WELLINGTON WELLS ITSELF.

Not wanting to spoil, but you play as multiple characters and each of them are impacted by and have an impact on the world around them as they go along (this is furthered in the DLCs). The lore is rich, the characterisation excellent, and the depth created through Uncle Jack's broadcasts, the characters' internal monologues in journal form, the naff British humour, little details like overhearing arguments in Bowie lyrics, and the overall history of this alternative universe is so good. I laughed, I was anxious as heck at certain times, and damn it, some of the storylines made me cry.

If you're into exploration, narrative-driven progress, and stunning visuals, give this game a go.

Behind the buggy and unreliable combat, tedious and unnecessary survival mechanics, and annoying AI, is an imerssive narrative game.

I'll keep it short, only buy this while its on sale. This game went over my radar on release and only now have I played it. The story it tells is much like 1984 by George Orwell. While a lot of mechanics don't work like the developers hoped for, the story definitely makes for it. The main characters are also some of the more human and interesting characters I've seen in a story.

The combat is inconsistent and buggy. In the 3rd campiagn, it had completely broken because I would be fighting enemies and then they'd suddenly turn into fucking undamageble walls that did not reach to being hit. The good part is that 3rd campaign is relatively short.

If you're interested in a lengthy narrative about a dystopian world with realistic imperfect characters, the give this a shot (as long as its on sale)

I really wanted to like the game. Technically, it's right up my street. British. Distopian. Looks like an action RPG, I was imagining something between Deus Ex, Thief, Bioshock and Dishonored. The early game even hinted of interesting choices to be made about the decision to take Joy or not. I also waited a long time for it be on offer too.

Alas, 25 hours in. I think I'm done. Here are my top gripes with the game

Artwork + World: The entire game world I see 95% of the time looks like hasty copy/paste of the same assets and characters repeated, making it look like a cheap film set. Yet I passed through some lovingly crafted rooms at points during the story missions, which I was able to appreciate for about 5 seconds before moving on. This broke my immersion from the off - sorry guys.

Gameplay: The sneaking and combat are two large parts of the game. Neither are very well implemented. Thrown items are almost useless and I spent a majority of the game with my inventory bursting from a vast assortment of weapons and items I had and never used. Really, a good quality electric trucheon ends most fights within a minute or two. I was excited to start Sally's story when I discovered she had a different style. Great! Only... the availability of crafting components completely prevented me from using any of her cool chemicals. I got frustrated not being able to find anything I needed for the knock-out syringe and just resorted back to my trusty electric truncheon.

Role-playing: The interaction with difficult moral choices, blending in and the escalation of Joy use was not there for me. I was excited and shocked from the gore during the opening cinematic to then not see it at all in the next 25 hours. I never overdosed. I hardly ever took Joy. I didn't ever feel like I was able to make any meaningful decisions. The story also didn't advance. I finished Arthur's chapter still puzzled about the wartime events. What happened and why?

Sorry to be so harsh. Great idea. Poor execution. I'm really hoping this is the 'difficult first game' of the franchise and I'd like to see what sequel brings.

If you can get past the sloppy combat, broken open world with a convoluted fast travel system, survival mechanics, and slew of (often humorous) bugs, there is a rather good narrative to be told here backed up with compelling characters and solid voice acting. However, a good story cannot save a game this arduous.

I'm gonna be honest, this game is technically broken. I've experiences several glitches and visual errors that, while not game breaking, certainly took me out of the experience (and it sounds like I'm one of the lucky ones). What's more, the game can be quite tedious, with all the walking and the quests within quests you have to complete. The AI is also terrible. Sometimes I'll be sneaking up behind an enemy and the'll just turn around, while other times they'll stare at me and, somehow, not notice I'm there. So, with all that said, why am I recommending this game? Well, it's because, even with all the stuff I just mentioned, I kept coming back to play We Happy Few. I'm not exactly sure why, but my guess would be how much of an amazing job this game does at creating a believable, funny, and intriguing world and characters. It may not be a 'good' game, but it's a game that, I say, you should at least try.
