Heyho,

Einige wiederum sehr Stilistisch.

A great concept that was ruined by auto piloting sections, bad voice acting, and a lack of direction overall.

Such a shame because this game has some talent behind it, but it feels aimless and not well thought out.

This is a hard pass.

What Happened is a directionless, nauseating experience, with overly long cutscenes, that just go on and on without any creative storytelling or competent dialogue. The game is just a mess, with very little gameplay, confusing narrative and distracting visual effects.

I have no idea how this happened, because the general art direction is commendable and the environments look fantastic, and clearly whoever made the cutscenes knew what they were doing. However, I just couldn't bare the game anymore. It was frustrating, disorienting and vomit inducing. I couldn't care less about the unlikeable characters or the plot that didn't go anywhere. The game is like that scene in mother! where we follow Jennifer Lawrence while her house collapses. It works in a movie, but it sure as hell doesn't work in a game.

Maybe that was the point considering this was someone's acid trip. But I'd rather sniff glue than have this on my hard drive.

I'm recommending because I think it is a good play but it ain't worth the $36 AUD (get it on sale). The game overall is interesting and as a dev myself I can understand how much effort went into making this. It has one main problem though, which is it is too long and could easily be cut in half. There are many part of the game where you are forced to walk down a long hallway and after 2 hours of playing those parts make it really boring.

Pros:
+ This is a really nice looking game.
+ The story (if you don't get triggered) is good and somewhat interesting to sit through.
+ A lot of work has clearly gone into some of the levels.
+ Voice acting.
+ Multiple endings.
+ Some good scares.

Cons:
- Long un-runable hallways.
- That bloody shark.
- Too expensive (even though I didn't pay for it).
- Alright gameplay.

This is a beautiful game. The visuals are stunning, and the attention to detail is awesome. Graphics, animations and special effects are 10/10.
The story is good, and it addresses a very important subject. But the way it's told, it doesn't work that well imo. I finished the game in 5.4 hours, and I kept seeing the same things from start to end: how Stiles' life went off rails, the problems with his GF and his best friend, etc.
I know it's important, but I got it after the first hour. Then I keep seeing the same things over and over, just told by different angles and situations, but in the end, it's almost like a recounting of the same thing. This means that I was losing interest after a while, even though I wanted to see how it ended.
Gameplay has some issues too: sometimes I wasn't sure what to do, I was just running around trying doors and light switches.
But I'm still giving it thumbs up. I enjoyed the experience, and again, it looks stunning.

What Happened

After about seven hours of play I was asking myself the same thing so read the entire review.

I disliked this game when I started it – and yet, I kept playing. I wanted to know more, the art and stunning visuals kept me going. Stiles kept me playing.

The game opens with a teenager in high school dropping acid. Then he gets a swirly and is beaten up. So yes, the subject matter is very dark: suicide, bullying, depression, drugs. Just being a teenager is hard enough. Add all those things together and it is not going to be an easy comfortable play.

The game takes you on a bad trip from the perspective of a depressed teen. He has had a very good run of bad luck.
Some scenes are tortuous. You see how mean kids can be in high school; hopefully actions you see are no longer tolerated. I really felt for Stiles, the teen.

This is an Objet d'art in so many ways. You are forced to go slowly at times and see… what did I see? You will ask yourself that too.
You are forced to experience hallucinogenic effects. Synapses on drugs are misfiring and taking you deeper into his mind and witnessing the things he has been going through.

At some point in the game you are told the outcome of the game is dependent on how well you “treat Stiles”. I guess I missed the memo on how you control that. You do not click a dialogue choice or select an action.

Was it bad when I didn’t run fast enough through the burning forest and dodge a tree that fell? Is it bad because I still have not managed to out-swim the shark and make to the safety of a classroom I have to find only by trial and error?

There is a lot of trial and error in the game. You are lacking clear direction in where you will find what. You must enter every room you have access to in the high school over and over and trigger memories. That does get tedious, but the amazing visuals kept me plodding along

There are some clever unique puzzles, they may feel overused after a while. There are notes to read, items that will jog a memory. Some memories are good; some are not. You question if what you saw was even the real memory.

Game Play:
There is an utterly unique way you access menu features. That is a hint on how you will proceed at times. The start feature is so appropriate. Perfect for this game.

You have the usual set-up options, the game autosaves after a chapter/memory. You will know when you have completed it.

Traditional WASD movement. A right click flips you around; that was a nice addition.

I doubt I will be able to progress because I am not good at action and speed. In fact, I just received an achievement for being eaten by a shark 20 times.

I wish I could though...

I had no screen tearing, no lag. no problems running it.

What happened is a story driven walking simulator that follows our main character Stiles. At first i thought Stiles was a shy kid that got drugged and bullied but as the story develops i was totally wrong. If you are a walking sim fan, you need to have this game in your collection. The game has some flaws but the positives outweigh the cons. A lot of people hate walking sim and give them bad reviews but this is a good one not an asset flip. A definite buy as It is half-price right now and hopefully it will be on sale during Christmas but that i don't know.

Very artsy and creative for sure. Might appeal to teenagers like our character here.

Here is a quick preview.

A game for the ages. Some games are played for fun. Others played for the sake of escapism. Once a generation however a game comes along with social commentary so powerful that it rocks the very foundation of the fabric we consider to be reality. What Happened? The titular theme theme of the game in question. Now a personal anecdote. I was at my wits end. I make content that no one watches. Unsure of where to go or what to do I decided to stream a video game and it was to be my last stream ever. That was, until I discovered What Happened. So many people showed up to my stream that evening with positive messages of kindness and affection that it turned my life around as well as my stream. God bless you devs and God bless America. A life of crime and drugs is not a life worth living and I see this now. Take care of yourself and each other. Urinary Tract Infector out. Thanks again.

Your auspicious entry into the world of What Happened begins in a dimly lit hallway, filled with doors. Each door has vague labels over the top of each that you must decipher to actually get into the game, stuff like New Game, Continue, Options, and Exit. Entering the New Game room presents you with a toilet, which you must flush to get started. Down the drain you go, and you wake up as a not so typical teen, sitting on the toilet, in what is perhaps one of the most terrifying settings in any narrative, that being a high school.

Developer Genius Slackers seemed to be earnestly trying to give a serious issue some much-needed representation, and the message that people could be battling inner demons without their peers ever realizing it is one absolutely worth echoing. However, the game falters and fumbles when it comes to properly conveying said message in a powerful, thought-provoking manner – as a result, the otherwise visually stunning and often outright trippy levels are unfortunately placed in the service of a rather shallow and underdeveloped plot that fails to do its own subject matter justice.

The game is just ok. The story is great and paints the picture.

The issues I have with the game is the lack of direction as to how to progress, lack of clear choices that can be made to either save Stiles' life or let him die, and the audio for the game cuts in and out frequently. The audio could have been a specific case for me but it really took away from the experience especially during key scenes.

What Happened is just a pretty face on a very shallow game that lacks any endearing characters, engaging story, or memorable events.  There are countless games similar to this available on Steam, many cheaper than $25, so unless something significantly changes, either with a patch or VR update, I’d have to give this a thumbs down.

You can feel the work put into the game via the cutscenes and beautiful drug induced sequences, but the gameplay of the game is downright trash. It mishandles heavy messages of bullying, suicide, and depression and devolves into childish high school drama that completely misses the mark

Score - 8/10

Conclusion (although I advise you read the full review above):

What Happened was confusing, shocking, depressing, and increased my anxiety, which I believe was its goal from the start. Step into the shoes of a young mentally ill teenager who has just lost his father and finds comfort in drugs, it’s an experience unlike any other as you delve into his thoughts and emotions, visualising his fears and paranoia as disturbing manifestations. Although I found it hard to understand what was happening at times, the game made me feel lost, confused, helpless and alone, pulling me further into the world of Stiles and how he was feeling. The story felt like it was a little too long as there were a few sequences which dragged out the game without adding context, but overall it was a thought-provoking game which I can’t wait to re-experience on consoles in the near future.

Very creative, very impressive work. talented people at work here.
Its a walking simulator with a very strong story, and it is one big trippy experience from start till finish.
If you are impressed by a very weird but well put together story walking simulator, i think you owe ur self to check it out. Talented developers that knows the mechanics of game developing.

MASSIVELY CREATIVE!
There wasn't even 1 moment that i wasn't like: WHAT THE HELL DID JUST HAPPEN!
it has its own weaknesses, but for an indie game, TOTALLY WORTH THE TIME!
it can be considered in masterpiece category and its a MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE!!!!
it got loopy puzzles that can keep you busy for hours and after you play it the reasoning behind naming the game would be obvious for you. it seems like it has multiple endings, so far i have found 2. I'm not gonno spoil it here but in order to find them you have to be really curious.
