The game runs on Windows 10 with modern hardware perfectly straight away. I needed no mods or tweaks. I never played this when it originally released, but have played and enjoyed other Wizardry games. This one is very different and requires some getting used to. After figuring all the mechanics out it is a good Wizardry game, but still on the difficult side. The graphics are dated, of course and the world is not brimming with objects and textures like modern games. My only gripe is that you don't start in a town like most entries. You are tossed straight into a dungeon and have to wonder out and survive. It is still a good tactical RPG and is a good Wizardry.

Playtime on here is inaccurate. I first played this game when I was about 9. For reasons that are too long to explain here, I lost my original copy, and ended up trying to get the game 3 or 4 different times over the span of about 20 years, none of which actually worked on the setup I had, but the Steam version actually works on my new laptop, and my 9 year old self is so excited. In all that time I haven't found a game that quite scratches that itch. I mean, there are other party based RPGs, sure, but none of them have quite the same balance with the importance of race and class, and I have still never seen a NPC dialogue interface that's anywhere near as cool. Graphics are obviously way outdated as it's a 25ish year old game, and the game is harder than I remember (maybe I played on easy mode??), but so much nostalgia, and I still think it's as good/better gameplay as a lot of games out now.

Note: I tried Wizardry 6 and 7 very quickly out of curiosity. I think there was also an online version at some point, which I tried. Don't bother with any of those, only 8 is worth it.

Also possibly useful: I have it under good advice to not have a single-gender party. I don't know why yet.

Tl;dr: Game is good enough to seek out and buy 4 times over the course of 20 years, but hopefully you'll only ever need this copy. Looking at the reviews, I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON who has bought this exact same game more than three times. If that isn't a recommendation, I don't know what is.

Definitely not for everyone; but Brenda Braithwaite Romero and SirTech's swan song and passion project is a monumental achievement and worthy sendoff to the franchise, developer, and subgenre. While there are certainly plot points and lore carried over from previous installments, nothing beyond minor details are necessary to enjoy the game. Let's be real: you're not playing this emotional fulfillment or stunning narrative.

Wizardry 8 has perhaps the single best party creation systems I've seen in a role-playing game. You can create up to six characters from over a dozen races and (changeable) classes. The level of customization is enormous: a nigh uncountable amount of skills, spells, equipment, and items each complement the robust character advancement system. It's a bit overwhelming at first but while the game is certainly difficult, there's enough transparency within the mechanics to where an astute player can't pick them up as they play. Most classes and builds are viable, but the real fun lies in experimenting with how the systems interact. Just that much more efficiency, just a little bit of efficacy. There are a lot of numbers here and fidgeting and finicking with them is a highlight.

Wizardry 8 has done something perhaps no other Western role-playing game of its type has ever done: make your created characters feel like...characters. Not especially complex ones, mind you but still. There are THIRTY-SIX different voice sets, two for the nine different personality types for both female and male characters. Most of them are quirky, many of them have outrageous accents, and a few of them are genuinely hilarious, but all feel distinct. They make the often lonely dungeon crawls feels positively brimming with life a personality. My cat girl rogue who is an excitable valley girl just brimming with delightfully endearing sarcasm or my dwarven warrior woman who has the friendly but cynical voice of what sounds like an old-timey country singer with a lot of failure in her love life are standouts. Seriously, the fact games don't do this more is a shame. You really do feel like your characters are characters, and everything from their everyday barks, responses to their triumphs and tribulations, and plot-relevant events have me laughing out loud and almost constantly grinning. It's worth an additional playthrough alone just to see what kind of weirdos and wackjobs you can bash baddies with.

These two prior points are excellent by themselves, but the addition of two slots for recruitable characters who each have their own skills, equipment, and personalities. This allows for EIGHT total party members and these recruitable ones - while not as deep as something you'd find in a contemporary Baldur's Gate or Final Fantasy - blend seamlessly into the party. Saxx - the rhino bard who has a delightfully raspy Southern accent straight out of New Orleans or Memphis - with a laidback and good-natured confidence fitting of an aging musician is a highlight. One of the most unique takes on what is usually a rather foppish archetype. They do have limitations though ranging from the reasonable (don't attack their respective factions) to the annoying and unnecessary (each character has a few locations they will refuse to go to). The latter point has a weirdly fourth-dimensional solution: either use a teleporter or transport them to the desired (or undesired) location whilst they're in an unconscious or incapacitated state. They will have a rather significant nerfs to their effectiveness and some admittedly amusing comments about how they ended up in a place they seem to know they're not designed to go to, but it's weird and the justifications for this system seem flimsy. This seems like an attempt to provide incentive to swap them, but building what is likely an underleveled recruit and having your more permanent party member miss out on the experience is often not worth it.

There are relatively few sidequests in this game in this serviceable plot, and a lot of them are difficult to discover because there's relatively little hint that they exist (a guide is all but required) and the journal system is frustratingly simplistic and vague. This makes Morrowind journal system look like a Wiki. Most of your quests involve a handful of major faction quests, and they're somewhat interesting to see play out and they often have relatively creative solutions though there's one faction that you can fail their quest if you double-cross them (which is again recommended as it gives most non-hostile factions the best ending) and don't fulfill an extremely specific objective. And even then there's a random chance it'll work. Entire playthroughs can be made extremely frustrating as a result. Even if you're anti-spoiler I highly recommend Googling this part.

Combat is excellent but with a few major flaws. It's turn-based with a lot of positioning, custom formations, and accounting for range. The interaction between spells, status effects, damage types, resistances, etc is pure old-school RPG goodness. You feel yourself grow more powerful as you increase in level and learn how these systems interact. Watching enemies explode into weird piles of meaty viscera (I say this as someone with a blood phobia: it's comical). It's such a good system that I rarely found myself not understanding why certain things were happening as they were.

Status effects make the game extremely compelling: there's perhaps two dozen positive and negative effects. Most of them are pretty typical, but the game dishes them out so often that many may find them frustrating. Challenge is fun, but having a battle that is effectively almost impossible to win play out due to some unlucky status that stick (sometimes from the same ability!) means its often worth just reloading. Yes, there are way to defend yourself and health these ailments, they are remarkably annoying when they go overboard.

Combat is slow and methodical unless it's on the faster Continuous setting where it's still slow and methodical. Usually in a game where you're juggling as many as eight different combatants this is a good thing but the game will often throw a LOT of enemies at you, and this isn't a case of quantity over quality. The Bayjin and Rapax Castle areas often had me facing as many as over THIRTY enemies at once all more or less around my average party level. With everything being turn-based this means acts like retreating, defending due to your inability to advance, and such has its own dedicated turn. There is absolutely nothing more boring and frustrating than a mechanic of retreating in pure turn-based combat. These battles can sometimes go almost 30 minutes if not more. There's nothing preventing several half-dozen groups of enemies seemingly wandering into the party's vicinity seemingly by accident all independently obsessed with turning your group of eccentric wizards and warriors into goo. With even towns having plenty of mobs and various guards of limited usefulness having their own turns this otherwise amazing battle system becomes extremely unwieldy. Usually this is fine but it can make the game needlessly difficult and long-wunded.

Also, dealing with ammo is annoying.

Excellent game overall, even with the blocky graphics and absolutely unforgettable soundtrack. Definitely not for anyone with patience issues, but a Saturnalia of old-school but not too old-school role-playing goodness for everyone else. An average playthrough is usually 30-60 hours.

It's great and it has aged well. They story and setting is great and you will have a blast experiencing the world. But, a warning to new players, it has an insane difficulty grind that you just don't experience in modern RPGs. My suggestion is to find game guides and absorb them particularly class guides which can be found on a bunch of sites online.

An excellent Wizardry game. Nvm the ingame hours, I must have spent like 100hrs on this. Been playing the wonderful Wizardry 7:Crusaders of the Dark Savant all the way since back in the early 90ies, always coming back to this series eventually.
Wizardry 8 might look dated and the mechanics surely show its age, but hell there's a great combat RPG here. Explore, fight, get good and get loot! The older I get, the more I appreciate games from the days of yore, where you had to figure your way around and learn the ropes without constant babysitting by the game.
Works fine on Win10 for me. I even dig the crappy graphics.
They simply don't make games like this anymore. Highly recommended for people that liked games like the Ultimas, Wizards and Warriors and of course the predecessor.

It draws inspiration from Might & Magic 6-8 for exploration and atmosphere. It draws inspiration from Ultima for the NPC dialogue system. It has the same great combat Wizardry has always had, but with seemingly more free-roaming groups of enemies or allies joining the fray. In other words, it's the perfect RPG.

This IP, got me into role playing games. I was younger and still remembering how I had to launch it from DOS. Back then I didn't understand the min/max concept, and found this game difficult to enjoy, but still a lot of fun. I have revisited this game a number of times over the years, and still find it enjoyable. Many real life lessons can be learned from this game, math, strategy, problem solving, moral choices, and how racial adaptations makes us stronger together. There is a lot of comical relief banter between you party members. Wizardry 8 also provides an overall better experience from the other releases, and gives you what the previous and later releases were lacking. The only thing I disliked about this game is the battle pacing. Even though I had the battle speed set at max, it takes a lot of time for the non-visible NPC's to finish their actions. Other than that it's a great old school dungeon crawl.

It's hard to describe wizardry 8. The combat is slow and often difficult. The level progression is obtuse and often counter-intuitive. The dialogue is hilarious but often cringily corny. Plot is not too complicated, world is honestly fairly delightful. I recommend taking a bard,,,

My Play time is actually at least 300 hours from Pre-Steam version and due to Steam not tracking time when using the mod injector, which is mostly how I play these days.

I've actually bought the game 3 times, originally the CD copies, then on GOG and finally on Steam.
I've bought this game as many times as I've bought Skyrim, if that's not a recommendation I don't know what it. :P

For me, this is Best Old school RPG on the market.
While others may have been better in some areas, Wizardry 8 is the best as it has the most modern features, conveniences and easy UI compared to the others, and has aged pretty well for a 2 Decade old Game, the blocky graphics can take a bit of getting used to for new players but are not bad and offer enough detail, but the best part is you don't have to fight with a UI or game mechanics like many of the other older classics.
And in one area actually beats even modern games today, the Voice acting and Party Character Voices.
It's one of the reasons i keep coming back to the game, the unique voice sets you can select for your party members just makes them come to like and makes game world feel so much more alive.

Decent Story, Cool world to explore, fun combat and lots of grinding. :)
Tons of numbers, stats and skills, etc, A min maxers dream.
And the freedom to really Role play your party, and create really unique character builds and parties.

For returning players there are some nice mods now, I like Dodd the Slayer, though I have played some Reforged as well, and would recommend both, depends on your tastes. Though be warned both increase the Difficulty quite a bit.

I literally paid $1.50 for this game. Trying to figure out dual classing, midmaxxing, and cheesing this grindy but fun game and really play it was a good ten hours. I definitely have already gotten more than a $1.50 out of this game, and I still want to play.

Edit: Near 40 hours invested into this game now. Some day I might make it out of the starting area. On party version 8 since I keep learning new things about progression and want to optimize. This game was worth every penny when I bought it on sale.

Wow. got lost in this game for hours. Can be intimidating at first, but find an easy to read guide and just dive in with an easy, first-run party and have fun. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

If you like blobbers like Might & Magic 6-8 (which I love), then this game is very similar, just without the training wheels. Interface is more challenging and the combat systems are less intuitive. It's as if d20 and M&M had an offspring and Wizardry 8 was it.

Pros:
Intense character/party customization
Massive world to explore
Just an all around interesting game.

Cons:
Dated graphics. Is this a con? May just be nostalgia for some.
Magic system requires wayyy too much clicking.
Combat not very intuitive at first.

tbh, you will know if this game is for you. But if you like old school RPGs, don't be afraid to give this a try.

Fun. Challenging. A foundation, a cornerstone RPG. Invest the time. Enjoy it. When you succeed it's great. If you fail, try again. Its an older game so its better not to bring modern game comparisons to any opinion you form. It used to have long load times. A modern computer cuts the load times into nano-seconds. At least this one does.

Its basically DnD as a RPG game. Create a party, do quests, try your hardest not to die.

A game that i still go back and play, the feel of an old school RPG with TBC fighting. It is one of the games that will have you loving and hating the game while your playing it.

Easiest way i can explain it is, think of Dragon Age Origin but back in 2001

A warning that Wizardry games are hard games. That said, Wizardry 8 is the easiest, newest, and most fun in the series. Wizardry 8 s the only game in the series I've actually finished. The core of the game is combat and leveling your characters and you'll want to grind on random encounters for some of the more advanced classes. Read the manual though as some races don't do well with all classes - especially fairies. There are walkthroughs to help with party creation if you need it and hints on what to do next. I made a mistake on my first game by going straight for the Destinae Dominus without doing the other story quests and it made for a very frustrating experience. There is also an issue that most of the common weapons are junk and it really helps to know what weapons to look for. Hint: Swords and Pole-arms are great weapon choices in this game, Axes are not, and good Mace&Flail choices come late in the game. Also be aware that some weapons are cursed so you can't switched to a ranged weapon or unequip them until you cast the remove curse spell. So try this game and if you like it you might try Wizardry 6 and 7 where walkthroughs and hint guides are required to progress. You also don't have automap options in 6 and 7.

This game has far too much of a focus on combat, and I personally don't enjoy the party-building. It seems like the difficulty is largely dependent on your party composition, thus a complete newcomer such as myself will be faced with impossible difficulty. As such, I cannot recommend this thoroughly frustrating experience to anyone not familiar with the genre, like myself.

This is the absolute pinnacle of a long-dead genre, that is, party based dungeon crawler RPG. Think Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder, but with 20 years worth of technical advancements. (No, Legend of Grimrock doesn't really count, because it chooses to ignore many of those advances and embraces the limitations of the older games, like a true retro game should.) It is a shame that it is also the last thing to come out of Sir-Tech.

If you have never played Wizardry 8, you like complex RPG systems and don't mind the slightly dated 3D graphics, it it well worth a try. I found it especially nice that the game comes with a pdf manual and a graphics driver that makes it easy to run on modern hardware and OSs.

8/10

Near perfect game for its time, still holds up in many ways. Hard to rate it higher than 8 though, because it's old and slow.

Incredibly fun and replayable, once you get the hang of it. Do yourself a favour though... start on Novice difficulty. This game does not take prisoners.

I bought this about 20 years ago and didn't quite have the patience to play it all the way through.

20 years later and I've come to realize that this game is one of the best designed RPG's of all time. Highly recommend to any RPG fans out there.

So I've played this game since 2006 or so back on my dad's computer, and since then I've finished it about 5 or 6 times. It can be played differently each playthrough, with different challenges and different story arcs!

I love this game more than I love certain family members. Yeah OK, it's super janky at times, like just now I had an NPC stand in a corridor completely trapping me in a room until I managed to load a game and get him to chase a bat, but no other game I have ever played quite scratches that levelling up and looting itch like this one.

It's a perfect game for starting again with a new party and never ever finishing because really who cares about the destination, it's about the journey, and by journey I mean levelling up your party.

Get this only if you have limitless patience. The combat truly requires it.

Pros:
-Charming fantasy game
-Fun exploration
-Great character and party customization/progression
-Story might be good, I never got far enough in. Seemed promising
-Old school game evokes nostalgia

Cons:
-Dated UI
-Terribly tedious and frustrating combat. It's so bad, it ruins the game for me. It's very slow. VERY slow. If you haven't played it, you should watch a video online of the combat. It takes ages when you're up against multiple enemies. They can aggro from very far away, and then you just have to sit there and wait for them to move (each enemy moves individually) and it takes AGES. Do your turn, then watch them all move, very slowly, again. I don't understand how anyone enjoys this. I rage quit the game finally after I got stuck in 4 battles in a row (enemies kept aggroing) of 6+ enemies each and just couldn't do it anymore. I had too many other games to play. I just wanted to go to explore, but kept getting drawn into this long, tedious awfulness.

I've owned this game on the original CD since the early 2000s. Played it for hours upon hours to beat it, and my friend even did a Faerie Ninja run on it.

So how does this port stand up? Phenomenally. Aside from the adjustment made to the Pickpocket system that has made it significantly more difficult to reliably pull off, it feels as much like the original game as I think can be done.

The true trial of this game is always figuring out how to build your party: what classes/races to pick, what stats/skills to raise, spells to pick, and even making the choice of when to pick up the various recruit-able PCs--which can make a difference as your XP splits to lower gains per PC after.

At the end, I can give two recommendations to new parties: spend your time leveling high in the Monastery cause the road enemies are large high-level groups, and don't be ashamed to look up info on Alchemy recipes, custom-smith gathers, and secret dungeons.

Lots of beast races.

Tons of customization.

Amazing old school built RPG.

Figure out how to run it on windows 10 and in a native resolution, and you're set.

If you enjoy Might and Magic 6, 7, 8, you might really enjoy this game. Mind you the combat is turned based, but it is free roaming world exploration. It involved a little bit of tactics when it comes to combat as well. After pushing thousands of hours into the Might and Magic games, I was ready for something new, and was glad to find this one. Wish I had more time to play it.

I want a modern version of this.
I played grimlock and did not like the puzzly stuff.
w8 the puzzels make the game easier. They dont generally block your progress.
the character construction is pretty deep.
the party integration is pretty deep.
the party fight mechanics are pretty deep.
they all fit together creating enough variety to change the way the game plays.
the content of the game is sparse and has a sort of empty feel....but that isnt a bad thing here.
what happens is that subsequent playthoughs are faster.
then its about seeing what different party constructions are like.
havent finished this yet though. not sure i will. i dunno. its an old game and take a lot of time.
but to me this feels very well made.

Something pretty important... a speed hack mod to increase the move speed of monsters.

The feeling i get playing this game is that its like the original dragon quest or ultima kinda flipped into a 3d world.

Dunno. but im pretty picky about RPGs or blobbers or whatever.
This one holds up pretty well after all these years.

old forum posts where people get into flame wars about what good characters are... that means to me that people were very passionate about the game and that its meta is pretty wide. Lots of way to play.

I got to go into a little more detail about the 3d turn based combat.
its not really 3d combat. the world is 3d but and maybe height is a blocker but there is no attack from above that i have seen.

But the world is part of the combat. Terrain can be used to your advantage.
the combat is turned based or continuous but basically its like realtime with forced pause or give commands and watch the results.
That feels just like any classic crawler.
But the world is 3d and realtime. it continues while combat is happening.
multiple groups of mobs can attack.
Its like playing an MMO but the combat is turn based? does that make sense? you can give a move order in combat and you will be able to walk or run to move around. but you cant go through soid things like creatures. any creature...

thats important to remember as it affects many aspects of the game.
the party formation is divided into 5 areas. front left right rear center.
you can put party members into any of these and keep them between the mobs and the softer targets.
weapons have a range. short. extended. long.
what that exactly means in range varies form weapon to weapon but primarily it means that a short weapon can only attack zones adjacent to the party formation location.
extended can go one past. long can go anyway.
This holds true for mobs as well.
a person in the center location and extended weapon can hit any mod adjacent to the party . A person in the right can not hit mobs on the left if there is a party member in the left spot.

Mobs and characters block eachother.

So its a simple concept. but i have not seen it. like that. how and where you attack is very important.
Getting attacked by 20 mobs no problem if you are in a hall way and only a few can attack you at a time. deadly in the open.

Thats a big deal. It means that you have to create your party in such a way to take advantage of this and be real careful in the open world.

the game world keeps moving whiel in combat so if a nother mob group comes along they will attack too.

This makes combat... even as simple as it is... interesting and different often.
Its such a nice mix between classic gridder and modern 3d combat.
I really like it.
It uses the environemnt. it uses weapon ranges. it uses player skills and character types....
it all integrates nicely.
And i am quite honestly spoiled by this. A game that doesnt do something like this is missing the mark.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#403 out of 572)... it's time for Wizardry 8.

Totally broken on modern hardware/OS. Game crashes when loading the main menu. Compatibility options have zero affect. Try the GOG version instead.

This game is one of the best of its time for free exploration, class balances, and overall non-linear story play.

However, do not buy it from Steam. They are buttholes that don't fix the game when THEY screw it up and will refuse you a refund.

A great little game that was popular many years ago. Wizardry 8 is very impressive but early games like 6 & 7 are not up to standards that 8 established, more first person, impressive. It is a quest game, good characters as well as story line, that includes character development as you level up. I create my own characters and disperse my points to change careers to round skills. Game allows up to three character assignments, I change back to original assigned career once desired additional skills are learned, a helpful tip.

This will always be one of my favourite games. I've played it through so many times and I just love the story, the character build, the way the game progresses. Sure it's an old game, yup it's slow and the graphics aren't anywhere near today's standard, but that's not why you play this game. It's not super straight forward, or linear, it's a beautiful mess of a game that gets you thinking about how to play within it's parameters. I also like taking a break from higher stress games and combat, It's turn based so you can get more strategic and relax. If you are able to be patient with it, it's well worth a run through.
