I love this game. It is not action only. It is not platformer/puzzel only. The gameplay is a shameless clone of Zelda OoT. And it is just the right comic-like graphics design. Play this on Hard! The bosses will be a pain, the first time you play it. All the more satisfying it is to see them shredded to bits, punched into pulbs, and broken. ... all literally.

I remember watching a Let's play of this game back in 2013, I binged that shit, and now after playing 5 hours of it myself after all that time it's giving me a blast of nostalgia plus a heck load of fun with somewhat challenging riddles to solve and greatly designed characters. 10/10

Feels like a mix of God of War and Tomb Raider, with a hint of Soul Reaver. The story will fit the back of a napkin, but introduces a handful of cool characters. The fighting system is REALLY good, when the game allows you to use it… but it also includes lots of puzzles, simple but getting tedious over time.

Still, a cool and a fairly short game. I hear the sequels all change up their genre, so it'll be interesting to check them out too.

A solidly designed zelda-like that offers robust 3D combat, platforming, and a variety of environmental puzzles. The game has all the trademark gaming tropes of 2010 but stands as a testament to their well rounded implementation creating a rich well-crafted gaming experience that uses the whole cow.

The hack and slash gameplay gives you an interesting variety of weapons and attacks that have a hefty satisfying feel as you pummel enemies and smash up the environment with moves that really emphasise War's bulky strength. There's a ton of enemies to churn through but thankfully the God of War/DMC style combos, dashes, grabs, and finishers don't grow old with the later unlocks add new life to the combat throughout. Enemies are also well designed with a good variety of tactics and defences that force you to make full use of your weapons and attacks.

The areas are linear by today's standards but they have an openness that still feels like you have plenty of room for exploration. This is complimented by the movement options which include wall climbing, double jump and glide, horse riding, and later on the portal tool gives you access to distant and hidden corners. This was a time when they were maximising use of the limited space available.

Many of the gadgets you collect are primarily for solving puzzles but they also assist in combat as ranged weapons, or for repositioning adding further depth to the hefty combat system. The puzzles grow in complexity and the first tools remain in use up to the end of the game as mechanics are layered and woven together in later dungeons without feeling like it gets overdesigned.

Gameplay is mixed up between the usual free roaming exploration in the overworld, the interior dungeon levels that grant new tools/weapons ending with a boss fight, on rails shooter sections, and artillery style shooting gallery sections. This kind of gameplay variety wasn't as common and set the standard for a lot of this 3D action platformer style gameplay going forward.

This is one of those games that just implements everything with such fine tuning. It's a best in genre and a rare case of doing Zelda gameplay better than some of the Zelda games did. The combat, dungeons, puzzles, and bosses are fun, interesting, and make use of all the gear. The overworld is littered with its own puzzles and mysteries to unravel. The animation really puts war's heft and weight into every action, and the cartoony art style doesn't distract from the over-the-top spectacles of the angels, demons, and monsters you fight along the way.

A rare case of excellent design, fun setting, and great visuals. The music isn't very memorable however and the story is a bit convoluted, but those are small flaws in a well crafted game.

The game is not horrible by any means, I thought it was like a 6/10 all around. The reason why I don't recommend it is because it is so incredibly annoying from time to time. One pointless puzzle after another, and so much backtracking it feels like that's half of all you're doing. It's a shame because with a more focused experience this could have been a lot greater. I couldn't even make it through the final 2 hours, it was just too tedious. It should have focused more on the action adventure and less on the mediocre puzzles. Overall the story is fine, I definitely think it's aimed at a teen-audience and had I been in that demographic I think I would have really liked the story, as it is I found it kind of cheesy. All in all, its a decent game in many regards but a really bad game in some.

This game does not hold up as well as reviews might make you think. The visuals definitely aren't great but its an old game so I understand, Can't really complain there. The level design is honestly confusing and all around not very good. The controls for most things are complete crap, like wallrunning, navigating menu's, AIMING, etc. It just gets worse. The combat (Besides aiming) is actually pretty fluid and fun, giving you a decent RPG leveling system to unlock new moves. It's alright in my opinion. But, in the end, everything just feels dated and poorly constructed. I do not recommend.

The game that forced me to start buying Digital games back in 2010. I remember grumbling about the Steam account requirement. This is the remaster of that game and its very well done. The textures got a major overhaul and it looks fantastic both on a 4k screen and a 2k.

I always felt these games never got the attention they deserved. Back then it was a golden period of gaming and so some games were overlooked. Dragon Age Origins was out same year, Mass effect 2 and then Skyrim dropped the year after.

The combination of fluid combat, ability's used also in platforming and puzzles made this a classic in my eyes. The story is very high fantasy generic but the characterization is fantastic. Liam O'Brien did a wonderful job as War and Troy Baker as Abbadon was also a standout.

The second game is even better but its certainly worth a play.

not sure the last time a game spent its whole so exponentially growing on me??? i basically tried it out cuz i know it was a god of war/3d zelda pastiche and that sounded like something cozy that could scratch some old itches and yea its basically that. tho certainly the opening few hours are a bit of a slog in hindsight, not unenjoyable in the moment but v much Brain Go Off Wheeee except for those kinda frustrating/boring Shadowlurker Challenges or whatever they were called dhjsdhs. but then u hit that first dungeon and man! something clicked for me! the comic booky post apocalyptic world, the surprisingly satisfying puzzles, the way the combat opens up once u start purchasing some of the better moves/combos, and the really really solid and even surprising level design in the non-overworld areas.

it rly does just make sense as its own thing, god of war never had puzzles this fun and thoughtful (to say nothing of the more demanding spatial navigation), 3d zelda never had combat this varied and intense. perhaps the only part that doesnt feel quite like the best of both worlds is the overworld, which was consistently disappointing for me. i never found the setpieces to be as memorable as the cooler dungeon moments, and there's a good number of zelda-esque Come Back Later With A New Item secrets but since u never rly come back thru these areas (theyre all basically paths to new dungeons) the best time to do it ig would just be in that anticlimactic endgame quest lol, at which point they just kinda ruin the flow and energy going into the third act. the actual finale tho is so genuinely awesome that im not even That mad they introduce quicktime events for the first time in the game in the literal final phase of the final boss. what a boss tho!! that jousting! that swordfight! they did like a way better of the twilight princess final boss basically????? wild!!

what surprised me the most tho in terms of affection was the style and the story. for some reason the big dumb celshaded comic book designs and animations didnt make much sense to me just looking at footage and stuff, but fsr once the game was in my hands i totally got it. and while sadly theres a bit too much greyscale apocalypse, there's also good variety and a few wonderful uses of the setting, like the dungeon in the overgrown subway station. what surprised me even more is the story, and like i dont wanna oversell it, and i realize that its convoluted lore that literally puts the fucking proper nouns in purple text for the subtitles may seem a bit Repellent. but it retains an appropriate tone, melodramatic and heightened but also earnest and involved with itself, it practically begs to be engaged with at least a little with its complicated web of uneasey alliances, old grudges, and cosmic duties. the fact that its dressed in such basely evocative Angels And Demons imagery probably helps, but even new players like the council and the watcher are rly fuckin memorable, and the messy ways they tangle with eachother r surprisingly compelling thanks to some colorful vocal performances, dialogue, and moral ambiguity. again i do NOT wanna oversell it, and war in general is far too much of a Stoic Video Game Badass for my taste which was a consistent issue for me, but the quiet thrill i got out of that final stinger made me realize just how much this weird quest and this Game Experience as a whole just charmed my pants off. idk if id ever replay it esp with cutscenes being seemingly unskippable, but its a rare triple A game especially from this era that feels this lovingly realized on a human level. will check the sequel at Some Point

even i dont know whats up with that portal gun tho. cool puzzles but like. yall could have at least changed the colors.....

Amazing game, took me about 17 hours since i was checking every corner
Pros & Cons below
Pros:
1. 10/10 story
2. Gameplay was pretty good, stylish combos and straight forward combat.
3. 10/10 puzzles
Cons:
1. The grind takes forever so look for a guide on easy soul farming and kill the secret boss)
2. Riding the horse was PAINFUL. Holy shit, How do you screw up a REMASTERED game like that.
3. Back tracking even will teleportation was a bit painful but I'm a bit impatient so this may be just me.

Alright game with questionable execution, more details below.

Off the bat, if you're playing on controller, there is no rebinding and the only lock on you have access to is hold. Despite Toggle being available as a function for keyboard, you cannot enable it on controller and whichever input you start the game in is locked in for the session, so you are unable to do it manually through keyboard either.
Additionally, the left joystick doesn't allow for smooth 360 degrees running. Instead you get running in the four main directions and their diagonal intersections switch to walking which makes movement and combat feel clunky at times.

Onto the universal issues, difficulty seemed off to me almost immediately, attacks hit you for insignificant damage, others can kill you in about a second. Why? Damage over time effects are tied to framerate, thus even if you're playing on a 60 fps monitor, you're likely going to be taking twice as much damage as intended from certain attacks. (On a cheesily positive sidenote, you do have access to DoT attacks yourself, which can trivialize non-boss encounters, but an overall balanced experience is usually preferable.)

Note for Achievement hunters- Saving has caused me to lose collectibles required for achievements. There's hidden collectibles all over the levels, fast travel takes you through a minute long walking section every time and collection of some might not be saved, making you backtrack through all of them in the same session around the end to be able to get the achievement.

The gameplay itself is serviceable but nothing special if you're used to PlatinumGames or other more involved brawlers from around its first release and since then. The visual style and voice acting are great in my opinion and it's worth watching the cutscenes if you're considering getting into the series.

TL;DR- Technical issues and a basic combat system bring the experience way down, but if you don't mind that, Darksiders might be worth picking up.

I bought the “Darksiders” trilogy (Couldn’t get Genesis) back in July 2021. At first glance I said, 10$ dollars for 3 games sounds like a good deal. After completing each game I can proudly say, all I can say to the franchise’s community is, “Aren’t we making a mighty ruckus?”.

Darksiders 1 was an experience I loved through and through. I fell deeply for War’s direct yet serene personality to most of the cast you meet in the game. A warrior with only respect for arms and combat, while retaining his cunningness during the fights and his analytical understanding in the story. With the same voice as Gaara from Naruto DUB and Asura in Asura’s Wrath, Liam O'Brien, the story of the warmaster was perfectly introduced and portrayed.

The narrative and the cast of the Darksiders played their roles in the best way possible. I was shocked with some of the plot twists that explained the course of War’s Adventure. I gasped a lot. Most cutscenes and in-game dialogue explained most of the rules and concepts of this fictional universe. The theme of The Four Riders of the Apocalypse was adapted rather impressively.

As a “Hack ‘n Slash” fan and Puzzle Solver enthusiast, I was astonished with the core gameplay mechanics of War’s Movement Set. I found it to be a bit clunky at times. Even though it was basic and simple moves, they felt powerful and refined, similar to the personality of the warmaster himself. The combat always felt thrilling when facing the hordes of hell. However, the enemy AI was dumb sometimes. They either stood frozen in place for you to hit them. Others died walking backwards into a death wall, a cliff or as soon as they spawned. The Bosses were executed greatly, both figuratively and literally. They used the same mechanics the player learned throughout his journey, while retaining the “HIT THE THING AND KILL IT” vibe.

The puzzle sections are recursive gimmicks throughout the franchise. They require a bit of thinking and attention regarding your current arsenal and location. They always give enough clues for you to figure out what to do and where to go next. As for the landscapes, environments and level designs, they were carefully planned and detailed. The diabolical dungeons you explore through a dystopian earth are polished beautifully.

Even though it’s graphics cannot compare to other titles that were published in the same period, it is a great game and entry in the action H&S genre. Many people see it as a God Of War Rip-Off, but that is just a formula for this type of project. Nowadays making something completely original is complicated.

But what you can do is take the formula of a specific genre and adapt it to your own vision, guidelines and themes. And I believe the devs at Kaiko and Vigil Games did exactly that. As a result, it made a great start for the Darksiders Universe. A game for gamers made by gamers. 8.5/10

TOP FUN THINGS TO DO:
⭐️Slashing up demons.
⭐️Upgrading various weapons.
⭐️Solving puzzles with the gear that you find.

THE UNIQUES:
????D&D vibe.
????Levelling up weapons by using them.
????Keeping the balance!

PLAYER GAMING REQUIREMENTS:
????RPG.
????Gore.
????Hack and Slash.

VERDICT:
I don't play many Hack and Slash games so this felt quite fresh to me in that regard, it's truly the only thing that kept things interesting for me. The voice acting and the sounds were all well and good but the story felt rather basic, if the next Darksiders is anything like this one, I fear i'll get bored. It's still well worth the asking price though and deserves to be played for what it is.
Total Score = 71/100.

GAMEPLAY:
In Darksiders, players control War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, in a third-person perspective. The world is split into separate locations with many areas initially inaccessible until later in the game. The center of the world, The Scalding Gallow, functions as a hub where War is given new objectives and paths to unlock new areas, many of which require the use of newly-gained abilities to progress.

The hack and slash combat mechanics with zelda-like dungeon crawling and an engaging story makes for a great game. It has a good sequel (Darksiders 2) with a few more RPG elements like random loot and side quests. Unfortunately, the third installment in the series was a dreadful disappointment so no fourth and final game is likely to ever come out. First 2 are great though, totally worth the money.

Solid game a bit shorter then i would have liked, but i also did not go achievement hunting i suppose. The puzzles are decent enough to make you think but easy enough you wont need to look up a guide, excluding some boss battles. Overall i enjoyed the story and i look forward to trying the sequel.

A good puzzle filled action game, very similar to LoZ in many respects, but with a hack and slash oriented battle system. Very fun and challenging, and a decent amount of playtime, especially on the higher difficulty. A good game to grab, especially if it's on sale. The Warmastered edition adds some nice QoL features and it is definitely a more PC friendly version than the original.

With my classic hack and slash repertoire only going so far as God of War on the PSP and Prince of Persia Sands of Time, I had a decent expectation of what I was going into. Suffice it to say, I didn't expect the semi-open world playground that the game thrusts you in to. The freedom of choice is nice. I'm used to being thrust into a linear story, waterboarded with enemies and just mashing the same few buttons to beat a room.

That being said, the game functions very similarly to classic hack and slashes in the respect that it's very repetitive how every fight and boss fight goes. Which might make it boring for most modern gamers. The game truly is a relic of past games. And there's not enough carrying it to bring people back other than getting people started on the Darksiders series. There's no tension, you don't struggle hard, and the story is okay. But don't expect stellar storytelling from a game that just expects you from mashing one or two buttons to clear a room.

It's not a perfect game, and definitely an extremely average game. It's weak by today's standards but don't let it think that this game is bad at all. I personally enjoyed this game despite its age in design. If you want an up to date hack and slash, play the new God of War or Hades. But if you want to start the Darksiders trilogy and try some aged gameplay for ol' times sake. this is definitely a good grab for the price.

I won this game through Steamgifts.

Such a wonderful hack n slash game, with puzzles, bosses, witty lines and tale of vengeance!
The combat was so much fun, with all the combos and the different style of weapons, and OH JOY the gore was fantastic, the ways you could rip into your enemies was truly glorious. I really loved the voice acting, story and the graphics weren't that bad either, considering that this was a 2016 remastered of an older game. 10/10 performance on that regard.

Sadly I also had some troubles with the game, as I was using a wireless XBOX One controller, which made the game lag during game play and cutscenes, it didn't hinder the game play too much, but it was a pain in my bum for sure. I did try playing the game with mouse and keyboard, but it was obvious that the game was not made for PC and it was a struggle.

In the end, this game made me very invested in the story of the four horsemen and I cannot wait to play the rest of the Darksiders games! I definitely recommend you getting this game. even at it's full price.

really good game, buy it!

You can tell the devs took inspiration from The Legend of Zelda, World of warcraft / Diablo.

The start is maybe a bit slow. but the game will start the grow on you the more you go on.

Alot of love went into this game and i cant wait to play Darksiders 2 and 3!

Darksiders I is truly a forgotten masterpiece. It wears its Zelda influence on its sleeve like a badge of honour while managing to have a pretty engaging and fun story.

The combat can get samey in the later stages of the game and there are some parts and gimmicks that show their age. However, this is a definite must play imo.

It'a fun game, albeit i was a bit disappointed, played it on highest difficulty first run, game was easy enough before i got the better armor, once i got that it become annoyingly easy. Last two bosses were a joke, more so the last one, they snuck a QTE in the fight, replayability wise will not touch it again.

excellent game every game genre this game likes to takes inspiration from (zelda, devil may cry, god of war) it does plus more, a must have if you like the old school zelda games like twilight princess or the older god of war games.

Pros
+great voice acting main character is voice by the guy who does Illidan Storm rage in wow
+all zones feel unique and the game pacing is perfect
+no micro transactions
+puzzles are elaborate and actually make you think
+story is amazing and leads well into the next game

cons
- combat feels a bit slow at the beginning but give it time and it picks up and becomes much more elaborate
- cutscenes are quiet for whatever reason.

The game is just fun as hell, pretty memorable hack n' slash adventure game, i for sure recommend.

Pros - The art style is amazing and the designs are as good, story and world building are amazing, it never gets boring but the game is also somewhat long somehow, the gameplay is satisfying with amazing and fluid finishers that have some of the best transitions i have seen, has an FOV slider (very helpfull in third person games overall), environmental weapons like posts or trash cans, two of the abilities are very good visually and gameplay wise some might say one of them is broken, war's form is awesome looking, horse gameplay and ruin (war's horse) has some noice hair physics, the weapons (plural, yes) can also be augmented with weapon augments that are good and varied, they also change the look of the weapon depending on the augment, good and fun puzzles, its a semi open world game split into sections that are at the same time connected with each other,

Cons - gameplay wise it's literally a zelda/god of war clone, fast travel is not fast at all, i love the idea and im glad it exists but the fast travel method takes to much time to not be anoying, two of the four abilities war gets are just MEH, usefull yes but kinda boring.

Nitpicks - wish we got to ride Ruin earlier.

Final Verdict is a 90%. (Final Verdict varies from 10% to 100%)

Darksiders is a mixture of God of War and Devil May Cry. It's an epic game with a rich story, awesome combat mechanics and great gameplay. You take control of War, a character you'll love throughout the whole game, as he journeys to fight evil and avenge those who did him wrong. There's a lot of exploring, looting, and collecting to do so you're in for hours of gameplay and a decent amount of content. Highly recommended.

I remember playing this on the PS3 like ten years ago and I thought it was a pretty meh God of War and Zelda clone, but I remember it being sort of cool. Playing it now and ohhhh boy, is that combat really bad. I didn't get far into it this time around, but the combat was so clunky, simplistic, and repetitive that I legitimately don't want to play anymore of it. I guess the story and setting is cool, the graphics are alright for a remaster of a game from a decade ago, but the gameplay is so formulaic that I don't recommend it.

This game is very my type of game and still feels nice in 2021. I love main character, I love story, love mix of exploring, puzzling and fighting. But. I'm so going to rant about fighting.

It's this type of game where developers for whatever reason thought it's OK to fight single mob that's not boss for 1+ minute making fight feel grossly repetitive. Difficulty raising is also designed really bad: at your way to the very first boss I had all kind of grief meeting new types of mobs, then there was that arena place that made me scream... then you get chaos form and game is easy again. What the hell. I don't like design of bosses mechanics either, one of them requires weird precision, another - can be only damaged by aerial attacks but no, being in midair doesn't make attack aerial. Camera movement at Straga also pissed me, I can't figure for my life direction where do I move when camera moves on its own.
Fight is extra hard when you play with mouse+keyboard because game isn't designed for this. Or rather designed horrendously. You need at least 6 or better 7 fingers or extra hand to use abilities and potions.

Thankfully fighting is only 1/3 of the game so I still leave it with ????

Great game that combines exploration, puzzles and slasher combat. It’s kinda Devil May Cry + World of Warcraft + Zelda

Story

You are War, one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. You were summoned by the mysterious counsel to keep the balance between Angels and Demons as the End Times approach and menace to destroy the balance of the Universe.

Graphics

For me, the graphics were a high point in this game. The design of the main characters and antagonists are obviously based on Blizzard games, such as World of Warcraft. The armors and weapons are gigantic, make the small heads of the characters look even smaller. Everything is cartoonish and exaggerated, as in a good comic book.

Exploration

This game has a huge world, separated in large areas, like a cemetery, a deserted city, etc; which you will visit at least twice to complete the game. Some people say it has a “Zelda-like” exploration system, because as you search for you way in the map, you will find chests containing items which will improve you character health and other status. It’s a semi RPG system, in which you have to explore the map in order to make you char more powerful.

Combat

The combat feels like a “heavier” version of Devil May Cry, where each sword swing is slowish but damaging, which makes sense since the main char uses a sword bigger than himself. You can do different moves by pressing different directions as you press the attack button, you can hold the button to throw the enemy in the air, so you can jump and combo him airborne. You know, the standard hack and slash stuff. You can also use the souls you collect from enemies to buy new moves and combos for your sword, as well as buying new weapons, such as the Death scythe. Personally, I mostly used the regular sword and didn’t care much for other weapons.

Puzzles

Now I must say that this game is very heavy into puzzles. Don’t let the Hack and Slash aspect deceive you: you will spend most of your time here solving puzzles. Even some boss battles are puzzle battles, where you can only defeat the boss if you solve the puzzle.
As you progress the game, you will unlock new abilities and weapons, all of which are essential to solving the many puzzles along the way. The pacing of the game goes like this: exploration-battle-puzzle. Don’t be ashamed to look for guides on the net as some puzzles are really tricky to solve.

Darksiders is a solid game with an original story that could be worked on much more in order to become a great game

The scenarios are diverse and huge, but the desire to explore them lacks many puzzles. The graphics could be more detailed, some parts of the game suffer breaks of fluidity and the fights are becoming repetitive. It’s a fun title, with many good ideas that could be improved.

Excellent, albeit on the easy-side, 3rd-person hack-and-slash game. Easy Recommendation

This game's strong point is its gameplay: responsive controls, badass animation, decent puzzles, and varied mechanics. Complementing this is its exploration, nice rewards, and just the sweet spot in terms of quantity (looking at you AC games); backtracking never felt tedious. Lastly is its graphics; its stylized design still holds up today.

The story is decent but doesn't hold a candle compared to its gameplay. It is your typical gods vs. gods worlds in apocalypse type of story; nothing remarkable. As for its characters, let's say the marketing for Mark Hamil's The Watcher doesn't bring the comedic relief it set out to be. The protagonist, War, is an unstoppable force with minimal character arc; he was weak at the start, and he became strong due to his big boy talent of killing all the things. Other characters are just there to either make sense of the story or provide a structure/barrier. The only standout in the character department is Vulgrim and Ulthane, not because they offered meaningful story pieces, but provided the much-needed character this game lacks.

The only issue I will gripe about is its save states and checkpoints. You will find yourself saying WTF when the game loads you from a checkpoint or savefiles. There were times when I continued from a previous day's play session wherein the game didn't save some of my progress like chests picked-up, and location I quit from (and yes, I made sure I went to Vulgrim and serpent hole'd to another location to get the autosave icon). Another is when I die from an encounter; the game will then respawn me in a state different from when I entered the stage; IE from full health, the game will respawn me with only 3 bars of health and the enemies at full health.

Darksiders Wrath of War is a game that is carried by its gameplay and mechanics. War may be responsive and satisfying to play and control, but the lack of character development makes this game not as great as it should be, along with its cast of characters. Nevertheless, this is a great game that I recommend to gamers who want to have a grand old time being one of the four horsemen and beheading fools that come in your way—being an unstoppable force while looking at beautiful sceneries.

I always liked darksiders. The plot and atmosphere of the first entry amazed me a lot when I first played ten years ago. However, the graphics aged a lot and even warmastered edition can not make it any younger. The game is fun but only if you like oldschool action. Darksiders 1 is a product of its era and heavily influenced by early god of war games. For me, it is nostalgic and it has its own charisma. That is all I need at the moment.

recommended by those who like games from the mindset of late 2000s.

Darksiders is one of the best sagas of all time,No spoilers but War's last line in the game was so badass.
The voice acting was SOO GOOD!

Darksiders is a hack-n-slash game, whose completion relies on platforming and the completion of puzzles. You play as War, the first of the horsemen of the apocalypse, who comes after the legions of hell have been unleashed upon Earth and the forces of heaven have gone to intercept them, starting the biblical apocalypse. However - unlike what has been foretold, you are the only Horseman to answer the call and thus strive to find out what is going on.
Combat will be an integral part of your gameplay and the combat here is very fluid, relying on timely dodging, parrying and counter-attacks. You will have three main weapons to choose from - the Chaoseater sword (with a wide variety of potential attacks and a higher wrath/chaos generation, more on those later), a Scythe (either a generic one, or Deaths Scythe, either of which generates more souls per kill) or the Tremor Gauntlet (which knocks down enemies with every completed attack sequence and is used in puzzles to break walls of ice). Along with these weapons there will be six items, which are mainly used to solve puzzles, but some of which can also enhance your combat. Ill let you find those yourself.
War has all of his powers stripped at the end of the Prologue, which means you will have to power him back up. Despite of this - there are no levels to speak of. You gain souls from killing enemies and use these to buy upgrades from a merchant. These are mostly skill upgrades (you buy new moves for each weapon and upgrade them), but there are also the classical health restoration items, upgrades and a few items (Deaths Scythe for example) and skills. The skills are launched when War has enough Wrath, which is kind of a mana/stamina reservoir. The devs have kept the Wrath pool relatively low, meaning that while you can have powerful spells, you shouldn't reach a point where you can just comfortably walk through areas and steamroll everything with spells alone. Lastly there is Chaos, which is an attribute that launches Wars Chaos form - this looks pretty much exactly as a Balrog from The Lord of the Rings and is invulnerable, but only lasts a limited amount of time.
The setting means, that you shouldn't expect much cheer here - Humanity has been annihilated and its cities lie in ruin. Despite this the graphics and color schemes are a lot more bright than in Soulsborne products - despite the setting I found there to be very little actual gloom and/or negativity. You basically have little to no time to build any sort of a relationship to anything you meet and thus wont much care what lives or dies. So if you're looking for something straight-forward and simple to turn your mind off to - Darksiders is a very good choice.
Despite how straight-forward the story is however, it doesn't mean its shallow or that it has no surprises along the way - the villain of this installment is not obvious
(he even gets killed early on)
and ..... getting more into this would be a major spoiler, so lets just leave it at that everyone you meet has their agenda and very few things are as simple as they first seem.
All in all - if you enjoy role-playing games and/or games with a very good story, do pick this up as it deserves the recognition.

Game really didn't age too well. Even with is pretty remastered paint job, the controls are still wonky and War over all is just a clunky character to play as. Beyond all of that you have one pretty darn fun action platformer. There's not too much meat to the game in the sense of character development. There are a hand full of upgrades and skills you can purchase with souls. that about it though. Darksiders shamelessly cherry picks from a handful of titles, Zelda being the main one. I saw another review call it heavy metal Zelda. That is accurate AF. there is also tidbits of Devil May Cry, and Portal as well. all in all, even in its ungracefully aged condition, it's a great beginning to an amazing series and if you haven't played it's well worth a try for a sale price. 20 bucks is a bit steep. The game is fun but it stretches on a little too long and it becomes a bit of a task to finish. Well worth it if you have the patience.

Darksiders is a game that takes a lot from other properties whiletrying to do it's own thing.
Let's get this out of the way, the story is good, the characters and world are interesting, but War spends the whole game doing what other people tell him to do and in the end, the journey feels incomplete.
It's a good looking game and while the art style is not for everybody, I feel it manages to make a decent use of it considering the world it's set into, and to top it all off, the animation blend in very well together, when you switch from a combo into a grab.
The gameplay... The gameplay is tiresome. Basically, you walk around a devastated Earth 100 years after the Apocalypse while taking out bosses in dungeons that play very similar to Legend of Zelda and that's where the problem lies. The game just takes too much from Zelda, to the point you can find lists online if you look for it, but the most important ones are the ones that hinder gameplay, like having to aim with your controller during a boss fight, having weapons that don't track properly, the fact you come back with only half of your health every time you die, the aim, THE AIM, oh my God, it locks into the enemy you're focused on at the time, and positions itself at ground level behind you, which means you lose sight of any enemy behind you.
The game has a faint semblance of God of War, but the combo potential is laughable, every single one of the weapons has attacks that work exactly like other attacks, but are a little stronger, they all lock you in place when attacking, the dodge moves the character way too far away from the enemy you're locked to and seems to have a delay on activation.
When it comes to enemies, while the variety of unique enemies is large, about 70% of them are variation of another types with a little more or less health, the larger ones are obnoxious to fight due to them reacting poorly to attacks and having an extra delay on strong attacks (as in, they signal the attack, get ready to attack, and then they attack, which breaks the flow of dodging and getting back into attacking), all the while waiting too much to attack again, which is probably why the devs thought it would be a good idea to have them deal several bars of damage near the end of the game.
Every single boss apart from the very last one (although that one only receives damage from your sword) has a gimmick, and it's hard to tell whether your strategy is being effective since they don't have health bars, so fights can either last a long time while you're trying to learn what to do, or end really fast because the boss didn't had a lot of health to begin with.
Some achievements are grindy, set pieces are janky and the world will have you going back and forth several time trying to remember where X portal for Y location was.
Do I hate it? Not really, I like several parts of it, and I'm definitely down to playing the sequels, but wouldn't recommend it or play it again.

I've been avoiding this franchise for just about as long as it's existed.

Here's why:[olist]
  • I felt like the art was rather — “Saturday Morning cartoon”-ish. Which felt misplaced in what seemed like a serious game.
  • I've never cared much for religiously themed tropes or archetypes. So that was a big turnoff.
  • I had played the intro of this game many times, and I simply could not stop comparing it to Legendary. A game that is truly a sight to behold. And not for good reasons.
  • At its core, it's a Zelda-clone. And I don't like Zelda. I'm being serious.[/olist]
  • But I was wrong to not play this for those reasons.

Had I actually played this back in 2010 when it first released I'd be hard-pressed to have not become nearly enamored with it. I'm still not crazy about it now. It certainly tried its best to annoy me at times. But in hindsight, had I played this earlier, I very likely would've gotten a proverbial pedestal out for display.

    War... war never changes.

You play as War! Of the four horseman of the apocalypse of course. To set the stage for the game, the Earth is destroyed! And you, War, get to take the blame. How quaint. However, the ”Charred Council” (no relation) strikes a deal with War as he is not one to take the fall for other's misgivings. The Council allows War to go out and find this “Destroyer”... on a leash. Followed closely by a character called “The Watcher” voiced by none other than Mark Hamill doing a most-certianly-not-a-Joker-voice. Quickly, you meet Samael who sets you on the task to retrieve [strike]pieces of the Tri-force[/strike] hearts of the Chosen. This is the main objective for the crux of the game. Then there are two shorter sections after. But it's “end game” sort of stuff. It is still a considerably long period, however. Each heart requires effectively an entire dungeon in a Zelda game to acquire.

    Classically Structured.

Let me tell you what I mean by this:
    • Gear acquired is used to complete dungeons for both puzzles and boss fight, then exploration later on. Lack of item acquisition causes “natural” gating of environment.
    • Puzzles typically resolve by opening shortcut close to entrance of area. Such as a hole in the wall or block to get to higher area just out of reach.
    • Zelda-specific structure:
    • - Life and Wrath stones collected raise associated meter after four are collected. - Beholder Keys behave as small keys do within the dungeon. Gating progress. - Trigger lock-on from Zelda is present. - Boomerang/Glaive is used to grab fire and ignite bombs.
    • Other game references/homages/inspiration:
    • - Combat certainly takes from the Devil May Cry school of design. Hold and pause combos conflated with air juggling with revolvers is the meat and potatoes of each fight. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2279511050 - Chests seemingly inspired from the God of War/Dante's Inferno era. Bashing them open and revealing colored orbs that refill Health/Wrath or souls used for currency. (They stay if you die.) Life and Wrath shards have a tinge of black smoke that encircle them. “Glory Kills” made popular by games like God of War are also used here. - There is also some shooting sections, though one in particular seems heavily inspired by Panzer Dragoon. If not Rez. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2279511013 -
There is also very literally a portal gun. And a few of the boss fights seem strait out of Shadow of the Colossus.
It's not a perfect game.

Some areas are too small for how large the characters are. Not to traverse, but rather to fight properly. At one point I was fighting two larger enemies in a hallway with one side open to the abyss. I was getting my rear-end handed to me so I activated Chaos form — A sort of built up rage mode that turns you into a monster — subsequently we all tumbled off the cliff just from the increase in size.

There is a late game objective that involves a fair amount of back traveling. And it's required to actually finish the plot. It's not super tedious provided you've found the Serpent Holes used for fast travel but it's still sort of annoying. Especially at a time when it feels like the story should be ramping up to its conclusion.

Early on, there are large “Wardens”/”Tormented Gates” — they're big rock golems — these characters are cursed and you need to travel into the shadow realm to complete trials to get past them. They're effectively tutorials as you accomplish them by killing a certain number of enemies in a specific way within a time limit fought in an arena. They're very forced and weird.

    THE GIST:
Having not played the non-Warmastered edition, I can only say that supposedly it's got better looking textures and lighting plus in theory it runs better i.e., 1080@60, as par for the course. Though, I ran it at 2560x1080 ultrawide just fine. I did have to adjust the FOV, however.

    It's a great game, I should've played it sooner.

    Zitat:

    Darksiders | November 6, 2020 | [★★★★]

Darksiders just become one of my favorite Hack n' Slash game, ahead of Castlevania Lord of Shadows II and behind God of War II. In comparison, Darksiders felt like a mixed of the old & newest entry God of War.

In the beginning, I noticed that the paced was oddly slow. Which is actually balanced once the game showered you with upgrades & items. Not just through battle, but It was also vitals to every puzzle you are into.

Outstanding voice acting. I don't know who were the cast was, but I really hear a lot of voices with a similar tone from Dota 2. Story's direction were also great even though there's not much to it, nonetheless, it was very fitting to the theme.

Definitely a fantastic, well executed/polished action-adventure game. However, there's really nothing innovative that the game serve to have my perfect score, but given the fact that I'm considering that, makes the game highly recommendable from me.

The game has been dubbed as Zelda-clone many times and even though it might not look like Zelda at all it definitely borrows some game mechanics from it. A big similarity is the game world which is separated in several hubs each representing a distinctive theme and a concluding boss-fight. Before each boss fight you will need to find and master a specific item - e.g. a grappling hook or a portal creating device. These items are also needed to solve the many puzzles in the game. The boss fights and puzzles are nicely done and fun for the most part. The majority of the bosses are rather easy to beat however - I had more troubles with some of the regular enemy mobs. Fighting enemies and bosses sports similarities to another big franchise namely the God of War series. So with Zelda and God of War as major influences and an overall good implementation of their core game mechanics you can't go wrong playing this title.

    Pros:
+ Decent hack & slash game
+ Decent length, took me about 15 hours to finish (and I didn't explore every nook and cranny)
+ Despite being over 10 years old already it has aged well imo.
    (+ Four Horseman Lore)

    Cons:
    - Cutscene ambient sounds issue (apart from voice lines you can barely hear anything during cutscenes)
    - Mouse & Keyboard controls took some time to get used to for me
    - Simple (and easy) boss fights (even some of the regular enemies are harder than most of the bosses)
    - No real replay value

    'Meh's:
+/- Story, it's neither bad nor good, but it will keep you hooked until the end.

    Unplayable on AMD video cards.
Apparently, this was fixed on an update, but not for me at least.
All drivers + O.S up to date, yet game runs on laughable 15 to 30 FPS on

    i5 6400 3.30GHZ + 12GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM + RX 590 OC.

Had to uninstall and play the original Darksiders for a smooth experience. Couldn't find any fixes. Cannot recommend to AMD users due to that possibly happening to them as well.

A remaster for a game that came out a decade ago, which was way ahead of its time both visually and gameplay wise. With added improvements to rendering and cutscenes its an even better experience, a nice stroll down the memory lane as well, provided you have played the original and witnessed the true glory of the Horsemen first hand

Pretty decent third-person hack'n slash. Story is interesting so are characters, combat was mostly good a bit repetitive tho and choice of weapons was poor, some puzzles were nice some striaght up annoying(Black Tower), and you need to grind weapon and horse and kill achievemtns if you want to get them.. Overall would give the game 6/10 it was fine experience a bit short tho. If you wanna play Darksiders game better play 2 part better story, puzzles, acrobatics, equipment and music.

This is an excellent remaster of the original. I highly recommend you play the game. The combat is a little bit on the shallow side, as well as the RPG elements being limited. However the game compensates this with a ridiculous amount of atmosphere. The art team have completely outdone themselves.
This is the most badass art style I've seen in a game. Demons are done to look cool, Angels look cool, War looks cool, everything looks cool. There's entire levels that have some very intricate work put in, that are only visited once for like 5 minutes during the game.
I cannot overstate how pleasant the settings are to look at. If you can get the game on a sale, definitely get it.

    Darksiders Warmastered Edition

    8/10

    - Epic Hack n slash game
    - PUZZLES PUZZLES PUZZLES!
    - Game is long and fun, but sometimes it gets boring when its too repetitive
    - I find it similar to DMC series, the final boss seems to be like Virgil
    - Riding a horse is fun. Sadly it cant jump on some ledges
    - Story is kinda expected, feels like you're doing a lot of chores
    - Controls are quite unresponsive sometimes
    - Level design seems off I got lost a lot of times or maybe I just suck at directions
    - I've encountered some glitch where I've got stuck on some area. War is just floating. It was really hilarious
    - All in all it was a good game, main character was way too badass

This is one of my favorite games of all time, I have played this game a ton when i was a kid, so a lot of memories on this one, Still every bit as fun as I remember it to be, Solid story, Solid soundtrack, and the combat is extremely fun.

The open world is amazing as you can go anywhere whenever you want *if you have unlocked the area*, there are a lot of hidden areas to explore, and achievements to hunt, the boss fights are enjoyable and exciting and unique.

War is my favorite horseman out of the 4 of them, so love to accompany him on his quest of redemption.
Overall extremely good game 8/10, It has some stupid bugs and annoying stuff in it but overall extremely solid.

    Important Notes:

Overall a fun hack 'n' slash experience. At least on my end the worst problems I experienced were technical ones. When I first started the game I found the sound levels in the cutscenes were out of wack - the dialogue was super loud and the sound effects and music very quiet. I did some Googling and found a fix for it, but when I got to the last few cutscenes of the game they ended up being really laggy (possibly because of the fix I did) and on the very last cutscene the dialogue was way out of sync and there was no sound effects or music at all, which was kind of a disappointing way to end a 19 hour gameplay experience. So be aware that you may experience audio problems, and if you try to fix them you may end up worse off for it.

    Gameplay:

That having been said, I don't regret playing the game. Most of the actual gameplay was a lot of fun, the weapons and combos all felt good and satisfying to pull off. Some of the enemies were more annoying to fight than anything but not to the point of being really frustrating. The boss designs were all visually impressive but mechanically a little uninspired, having you do a single thing over and over again until you beat it. Outside of hacking bad guys into smaller pieces a lot of the game is made up of puzzles, and I would say they're of just the right difficulty - hard enough that I was scratching my head at various points, easy enough that I eventually figured all of them out without ever needing a guide. Some of them are quite cleverly designed, but one part of the game is basically three long puzzle sequences one after another and I have to say that got pretty old by the end. But on the whole the puzzle-to-combat ratio is healthy.

    Story:

You know, I didn't really pick the game up for the story, and that's probably a good thing. It's not that it was bad, per say. It was kind of hard to follow since the characters all talk in a very melodramatic way about everything, and generally speaking the whole thing was very overblown - but that's kind of what you get from a hack 'n' slash where you're playing as a horseman of the apocalypse. My only other major experience with the genre is Devil May Cry, and I'd say if you like that series you'll be comfortable here, though Darksiders is rather humourless by comparison.

    Conclusion:

If you're into the Rule of Cool, you'll enjoy this game. If you like hacking up bad guys, you'll be very happy. If you want a game that doesn't take itself too seriously, you'll either be put off or end up laughing at all the over-the-top tough guy anime-esque action, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

7/10 (good game) - from now on will forcefully kick open every door I wish to pass through

God of War ripoff? Maybe. But does Kratos have a sick gun?

    Thumbs up from me, Darksiders.

Fantastic game! I had so much fun playing this game, especially the worlds, I love Wars character, the fighting, and the diversity of all the areas. I fully understand some may not want to play an older game but truly fantastic game. I am on my way to try the second one and then on to the third. I'm super late on this franchise but I'm glad I got into it. Felt like a mix of Zelda and The Darkness 2. Would love to see more combos but I had a great time with all there was. Also, Vulgrim gave me super Resident evil 4 vibes and I'm totally for it. 10/10!

Still one of the best action-adventures on the market. Lots of interesting mechanics, perfectly balanced between combat and exploration, the story is authentic and epic, graphics aged very well indeed due to remastered textures, lighting and so on. A decent way to spend a few evenings.

My first foray into the Darksiders franchise. And I like it!
This game is pretty fun. A simple hack and slash game with elements of Zelda like dungeon crawling and exploration.
Set in a post apocalyptic world, you play as War, one of the Four Horseman, who is framed for causing Armageddon prematurely. It is up to War to uncover the truth of what happened and try to set things right and clear his name.

You will fight through both the forces of Hell and the legions of Heaven while also dealing with the undead remains of Humans.
The game isn't all too long really, especially if you know what you're doing. I completed my Apocalyptic difficulty run in about 13 hours, but I was not trying to speed run. I did my normal run as my first play through in about 40 hours. I like to explore and take in everything a game has to offer me.

The achievements aren't too difficult, and you'll likely get most just through your regular play through of the game. Some you'll have to go out of your way to get, like killing 100 enemies with items from the environment. Or a couple of grind heavy ones like riding your horse for 100 miles or grinding enough souls to buy everything from Vulgrim's shop. But nothing too taxing. There's some helpful tricks you can use to make the souls and weapon experience grinding much faster and easier, just look through the guides on Steam.

I give this a good thumbs up. Just be sure and play the Warmastered edition to avoid the bugs and some game breaking issues with the original version.

    What is Darksiders ?

My initial thoughts on this game in my first hour of gameplay were: Why did I not play this one already ? Why I gave this franchise a chance so late ??? I loved Darksiders and after playing it for the first time I just got really into the story, characters, themes, the whole world they built here, I loved every moment of it and I cant wait to play the other 3 games that they released so far so lets talk about why I liked Darksiders so much and how wrong I was for not getting into it sooner.

Well, have you ever played a Zelda game before ? are you a fan of hack n slash games like God of War and such ?? Darksiders tries to mix the best of both of those games while adding its own spins in the formula, the result is something fresh, although not really innovative but still an overall great experience, the combat while a bit simple has a lot of weight and is fun, you get 3 different melee weapons and some tools like a pistol, a throwing star that you will use a lot in puzzles like you did in Zelda games, a device to create portals, a mask to see hidden things and many more, you also have 4 different spells and consumables to use to aid you in combat, the games difficult was a bit disappointed it wasn’t that challenging but the worst flaw of the game is that it has really good bosses, with nice designs and the fights were…. Easy ??? Even the final boss was a cakewalk, granted my character was well-built at the end but more challenge would be better, the world exploration is well-done, there is many stuff to find, you as one of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse get your own horse in the middle of the game which is fun to use, the game has enough variety to keep you interested into its 20 hour duration which is a very good size although a bit long for a hack n slash game that isn’t realy “fully” open world.

The story and the world-building is what made me fall in love with it, doing its own spin in the whole horsemen of the apocalypse concept was really interesting, the characters we get to meet were interesting, War himself as the protagonist isn’t really the best type of character we get into those type of games but he manages to be badass while having a cool background story, the soundtrack is also good, the maps are varied enough and what I like best in it is that it has dungeon-like places which is where they mostly draw inspiration from Zelda games, you get multiple rooms with puzzles, locked doors requiring keys, new items to get and a boss fight at the end, its all done really well, the game is polished enough and I haven’t encountered a single bug.

Took me around 20 hours to finish it (remastered version btw) and I cant wait to start playing Darksiders 2, I had a really good time with it, I like when games that are fun have a good story, I just wanted to know what was going to happen next, at the end of the game I was on the edge of my seat and the ending gave me goosebumps it was truly a memorable experience, I recommend this epic game to everyone and please don’t make the same mistake as me, if you like what you’ve seen about the game so far, the concepts and such, don’t wait too long like I did to get into it, it’s a promising franchise that I cant wait to get more of, now what are you waiting for, do you wanna play as WAR himself ? then just to do it, get yourself a darksiders copy and go play!

I hate to leave a negative review but here it is. I honestly really enjoyed this game even if it feels a little dated. if you enjoy games like Dante's inferno, God of war and games like that then this game is a blast, But sadly it has some game Breaking bugs. i have soaked 19 hours into this game and collected nearly everything on the apocalyptic (Hard) difficulty just for my progress to be lost.

this game has a feature to save on your own and auto save, i always saved myself right before i quit but used auto saves when i messed up. i trusted that method and nothing would go wrong. but little did i know the second to last area The Black Throne has a game breaking glitch where if you quit after doing certain things and reload where the check points are might reload you behind a locked door with no way around. I would love to see this game to completion but i just can't bring myself to go through it all again.

A mashup between God of War and The Legend of Zelda, this classic still holds up 10 years later. Great performance and ultrawide support, tested up to 32:9 with an included FOV slider.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition is a great remake of a classic and definitely a great start of the franchise. The combat mechanics feel a bit dated if you compare it to the current generation of action adventures but for its time this was one of the best. My save file for completing all achievements on apocalyptic difficulty shows 25h on record. If you are in this for the achievements then be sure to Google which are missable as I had to start over after beating the game to mop up a couple of achievements I had missed. Hope you enjoyed the journey as much as I have. Happy slaying!

DarkSiders II is better, but this is still a very good game. Good story, combat, graphics, and music. Environments are immersive, story is easy to get into and remember. Controls are decent and the game is well optimized.

War is honorable, proud and loyal; but he has more muscles than brain. Strife is literally Deadpool: a sad and reckless past hidden behind a mask, idle jokes and sick gun play. Fury's a rebel teenage girl who loses her way and straight up just wanna kick asses. And the eldest, most powerful brother Death is too kind and compassionate for his own name. Boy, imagine their family meeting.

I'd rate it a 6/10. It's a cool game and I really liked the first part, but by the end I was just glad to be done with it. I'd want to give it a better score, but the level design of The Ashlands and The Black Throne was really bad at parts. At least for me.

There's quite a lot of bugs/glitches. Some of the puzzles don't really feel like puzzles, more of frustrating inconveniences (same for some of the bosses). They don't feel rewarding when you get past them. The pacing is bad (both story and gameplaywise), and the the way the cutscenes are edited is really weird sometimes (the editing and issues with sound). The game just doesn't feel like a finished product.
The story and setting are cool, but delivered in a bad way. The combat isn't very deep either (only played Normal mode though).

If you're thinking of getting this one to play before playing the other Darksiders games, well, it's not a must. The other games (from Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition onwards) are developed by a different studio, so I'd expect them to be better.
