Hard to get into, the tutorial is hellish. Have the wiki page on hand and be ready for a pretty grindy experience. But all that grind means the pay off is great! If you don't mind the outdated graphics and mechanics, this game is a gold mine of possibilities!

Game has such a crazy in-depth crafting system, so many things to learn and it feels satisfying being a merchant, even if just a small-scale one. Nearly everything in the game has value, and can make a profit in the economy. Players and community are really nice and helpful here, truly my favourite sandbox mmorpg.

interesting game but very limited when your F2P, progress get locked at lvl 20, which is SUPER low. wouldnt be that big of a problem usually but unlike games like runescape it lacks regional pricing so you either pay in euros or you dont pay at all.

its interesting and i really want to recommend but the difficulty due to international fees on premium just makes too huge of a roadblock

I have been frequenting virtual worlds and MMORPGs since the mid 1990s, and only Wurm Online has got me in the kind of grip no other MMO has compared to. I've been playing Wurm, on and off, since 2013.

What is it about this grindy, complex, and flawed game that makes me return time and again?

In writing this, I'm torn between: Immersion and Depth. There are stories everywhere you look. The world of Wurm feels deep, alive, and vibrant. Looking over any given expanse, you instinctively know that there are secrets to be found underground, above ground, and in the clifftops. You can literally go anywhere you see. If you want to live on that rocky, inaccessible mountaintop, you can - with some work (and help). You can dig as deep into the earth as it will allow. There are very rare animals roaming (and swimming) that have yet to be found. Vegetation grows back over time and spreads over the foundations of abandoned settlements and other signs of previous human life. Exploration is thrilling, by itself, such as coming across an unlisted deed that has its own unique and creative flair. There is mystery out there...

I particularly love sailing and crossing servers in search of mystery and secrets.
The community feels alive, with very active forums and chat channels. I have met many players and made a few good friends; other people who are also helplessly under the spell of Wurm. I've met very few mean people in this game. The events (such as the Impalongs, where highly-skilled players volunteer to improve the quality of the items of lower-skilled players; various games and contests are included) are wonderful. There is a sense that players need one another, for the most part. Some merchants produce items that are difficult to find.

Owning your own piece of land is a great pleasure that you can terraform to your deepest desires (look up Magranon's Rest for a jaw-dropping design!) and design to your heart's content, within the constraints of a medieval theme. There are hundreds and hundreds of cooking recipes (with a very elaborate cooking process), and many ways to surprise friends or strangers via mail.

I understand that the game is flawed, but it offers something extremely unique.

Absolutely awesome game. Takes awhile to get things going, but definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Build your farm castle town or whatever you feel like. Mine metals and rocks, Chop trees and collect all sorts of resources. Plant farms. Collect animals, donkeys mules horses bison hell horses unicorns dogs chickens goats sheep bulls cows. milk sheer or butcher. endless things to do and experience. great community of people.

I'd call this more of a simulation of living a chilled second life in a 2000-era RPG game.

It will take hours to get the basic resources for your land
It will take days to build your basic home
it will take weeks to shape your deed
It will take months to shape the land around you
It will take years to master the game
It will take you decades to master the multiple vast lands of Wurm

Or you just buy currency to trade for epic items, resources, run thru the game, and get bored of it within a matter of 100 hours.
Or the community has top veterans who can help quickly expedite the grind.

Overall, this game gives you that fulfilled self-satisfaction of the harsh grind of developing your character.
At the same time, the game play punishes your fingers as automation of skills will get you banned very quickly.

I very much enjoyed this game but I'm glad to have broken the cycle of playing this.
Neighbors come and go and what resonated with me the most are those who come back after years have told me it's always exciting to see how the world evolved from their legacy and their once claimed land.

Oh, buyer beware:
This game is so old, it nearly destroyed my 2017 Alienware laptop as optimization is absolutely atrocious. And the new content updates will accidentally break something in your Windows. Oh and most players I've interacted with are based in EU so community events tend to occur during this timezone.

Very engaging. I saw a review that mentioned that you can't run. That's not accurate. You run with low weight in your inventory. The more you carry, the slower you'll go. This is where carts and wagons come in. Has aittle bit of a learning curve but people are online and ready to help you. If you want to make a cart, you have to make all of the materials needed to make the cart. This is a slow burn game. The game isn't a race, it's work at your own pace and do why you want. There are no predetermined quests or storylines. You do what you want to do and leave your own impact.

Let's be clear: Wurm is not for everyone. It's an old MMO with a lot of odd ideas that are completely contrary to modern MMO expectations. THAT SAID, there's a definite charm to the game, once you get past the steep, STEEP learning curve and the immense grinding necessary to get anything done.

This game has corpse runs. If you die, most of your belongings will get left where you were killed, and you have to go back there to retrieve the stuff. Most newbie equipment is immune from that, but not ALL newbie equipment. You can get your ass kicked by almost everything in the game at the start - even a fierce Feral Cat (yes, kitties!) can be a life-threatening encounter.

What this game has to offer, though, is a moderately deep crafting system, and a terraforming system that means you can functionally make permanent changes to the world that will literally last for years, even after you've stopped playing. It takes a lot of work to make something worthwhile... and it also takes a lot of work to undo someone else's work. So making, for example, a lighthouse or highway that other people use, or a noteworthy house that others use as a landmark, is something that can provide a degree of satisfaction that few other games can really offer.

If you're willing to put in the work, and aren't looking for instant gratification for pushing buttons, this game may be right up your alley. And going solo will be extremely dangerous, but again, can be quite rewarding once you're done. (Spoiler: You'll never really be DONE!)

Can't recommend Wurm enough! Think of it like grown up Minecraft - ironic given Notch worked on this before Minecraft was but a glimmer in his eye.

Wurm Online is very slow compared to other sandbox survivals like Valheim or the aforementioned Minecraft. Actions average between 15 to 60 seconds, and you will be repeating actions a lot to do things like put up walls or dig your first mine.

That slowness adds to the feeling of satisfaction finishing your first structure, or grinding a skill you enjoy after several hours. However, I get it can be draining. My main advice for that is to interact with the community via in-game chat, and putting on videos or streams in PiP mode or on another monitor. Helps the time pass by very quickly, and you'll have something that made your character better.
I also highly recommend having the Wurmpedia open on a tab, as this game can be absolutely very confusing at first. Please do ask for help, people in Wurm are generally extremely kind and willing to assist you!

Do beware that the PvP maps are very low population. If you want player density for server-wide (i.e. island-wide) chat, I recommend Cadence or Harmony on the Northern Freedom Isles cluster.

If you are the type of gamer who doesn't care about graphics or odd quirky ui experiences, this game won't irk you. If you want a game where you can transform a survival based world for years to come, where terraforming, building, crafting all take time and resources, this game is for you. The reward factor from this game mainly comes in the form of accomplishing hard and time consuming tasks and getting better and better at them so that it seems almost effortless.

This IS a sandbox game however. There is no guide on what to do, you have to decide what you make of it. Eeking out and survivng is a challenge and learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you can dream up building projects to suite your desires

The grind is a bit steep however. And it's a lot different from other massively multiplayer online games.

played the standalone version since 2013 quit after all these years because of the compleed lack of communication from the staff/devs and the corruption thats going on within the staff team, not to mention that you have to wait weeks for a support ticket to even get looked at with gamebreaking exploits beeing used against you. Ontop of that rules just get twisted how the gm/staffs feel like so even tho on ur side u played 100% within the rules, they just get twisted and turned against you to punish the player in the end.

I would not recommend this game to anyone. The game is basically unsupported and littered with bugs. This would be fine if it wasn't for the fact the GM's and Dev team create this toxic environment that if you are found anywhere near a bug that you must cause that problem instead of addressing a bug itself. Save yourself some money and skip over it (16 years into the game and uninstalled it myself)

A niche game for people who enjoy exploring, landscaping, skills, house building, discovering, and community-building in an open world.

I used Deed Planner 3 to create my first serious deed plan as you need a goal to work towards. Eight months later, the deed is taking shape but so much still to do. Started off with a tiny wooden hut and a crop field surrounded by forest. Now the deed has a terraced crop field, animal farm, guard tower, extensive mine network, various workshops and residences, large ornate entrance bridge gate, connected to the highway,...

My character does not get timed out for inactivity, so I can get on with real life but play Wurm Online as a background task.

Everything takes a lot of time and effort but that's why it is so rewarding when you complete that house, bridge, road, skill gain....

I like the game, played it a bit over 8 years ago, in the meantime I played some amount of Wurm Unlimited (Free dedicated server version of this), but I would not recommend going into this.
The devs shot themselves in a foot by releasing WU (unlimited), which they realized later and stopped updating that game at the start of 2020.

So to play WO (online) you have to pay monthly, it is really not worth it going into this thinking you're not gonna play, you would be just wasting your time.
What does this monthly subscription give you?
- Sporadic updates like donkeys, that have a known bug of not being able to drag carts and wagons, what are they even for then?
- Different looking UI, where most things are the same but it's in space gray instead of woodgrain.
- Official servers, where people, that stick with it, spend so much time grinding, that they are disconnected from reality.
These are some things that come to mind.

Problem is, this is not worth it.
Some WU servers are as good as the official ones, with faster xp rates and quicker actions. The community there is as good, and feels more human as they don't have to spend as much time in game. And at least you will be spared of the melodrama of WO admins.

The game itself is an aquired taste, slower minecraft with more legacy which I dig, exploring forests, montains and shores is also interesting, but ruined by the fact that buildings decay, but terraformed terrain stays the same and you see weird mounds everywhere.

And yes, this is an MMO, but playing with others usually doesn't happen. People are too afraid to let strangers touch their lives work and/or have a vision you would ruin by infusing it with your vision.

Wurm Online is an amazing concept however it takes Einstein to figure out how to play right off the bat. once you figure everything out though, its actually really fun. you can build, craft, cook just about anything and most of the game mechanics are extremely realistic. I highly recommend this game to anyone that really truly wants to take control of their gameplay and do anything they wish.

Wurm is... It's quite the unique game. However, it is a very bad version of what it could have been. Pay to win. So complicated you need the wiki open at all times. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the wiki is incomplete, and the makers of the game did not help making it.
Wanna craft a tool? Oh yeah, just follow these 500 steps which are badly explained! Didnt work? Yeah your level in carpentry is too low! you gotta keep trying until it works! Did i mention you have to pay to get your carpentry skill above level 20, in fact, pay to do anything noteworthy?

It's no wonder this game has died. Poor introduction, a control scheme that sucks ass (hold LMB to lookaround) and pay to win.

The game... could have been awesome. It could have become the game all of us play, but it's too complicated, pay to win. Everyone is gone and documentation is garbage. It is truly sad to see such potential go to waste.

As an ex-wow player, the crappy FPS and disaster of a combat system that is Wurm is exactly what I needed to chillout after years of a toxic community that is now world of warcack. What could this relic of a game offer such a seasoned player used to seamless fps games, slick ui, and instant gratification?

Well the answer comes in a few forms. Firstly you have the *slowest* levelling system for your skills, the *slowest* crafting process ever, and the *slowest* everything. How is this good? It's because you get your brain back - you can chillout, click, chillout, click, chillout, click, get eaten by a spider, run 10km back home, chillout, click, *checks for spiders*, chillout, click.

You see that mountain over there? You can level it, make a tunnel through it, or climb like a snail over it - your choice.

You do what you want, when you want, at a pace so slow, that at 100 hours in i've only managed to put one shoe on, brushed my teeth, and just about to leave my tent for an adventure (Obviously lying, but still basically starting at anything - I've made some ground flat, have a small house, and been spider poop a few times)

If you're still not convinced, I've left my Pollo mount alone in WoW - and that's a huge deal... like who doesn't like a huge chicken between their legs?

Warning, game is slow. A challenge. A freedom from the frantic mania that is modern gaming.

*checks for spiders*

If you already own and play Wurm, check for spiders.

The game is very challenging and you have to work for everything... not for those who just want a simple village builder in a day. this takes days to weeks to build, especially if you work alone.. but the effort is rewarding.

It's...difficult to say the least. If that's what you're looking for then by all means. It's minecraft with extra steps, cons, and ps1 graphics that make your life harder sorta like in real life. You basically build a community from the ground up. It passed the time and gave my friends what we wanted at the time, but to do anything you needed to pay monthly with getting minimal perks. It's not bad but it's far from good as well.

fun game, usual grindy grind fest, like its so grindy there is no endgame. be the first top burn 100 million years tryinbg to max a skill, get to NAME that skill title. the fun comes from the people you play with and building an economy/ village together. that said- this is NOT a free to playt game, its 5.99 euro a month, much like runescape as p uch everything is paywalled. also silver, the main currency is basically real money so.

Out of steam i have around 3000+ hours on this game, probably the best in open world sanbox'y building games, but you will need to be very invested in this game, things can take days just to get the resources ready and refined before even building, while you can play for free lots of things cant be done below level 20, like riding a horse, so if you want to explore prepare to be walking for hours, and crafting will drive you mad with constant failure, other players (before steam release) are really good and a helpfull lot. Also you can play alone but ideally you need to work as a team if you plan on building big or dont have 8+ hours a day. id say a good game and deffo the best sandbox, but very niche if thats the word as its more like a second job.

If you’re looking for an honest and experienced recommendation. This is it. To give context and strength to my recommendation, I played Wurm Online over the course of 15 years, 12 years was pretty consistent and my return has been after a 3-year absence.

I will breakdown this game to support my recommendation, this recommendation is to not buy or support this game.

Major flaws

1. One account is not enough

If you are going to play wurm and attempt to be self-sufficient or competitive in the economy on PvE or in combat in PVP. You will need at least 2 accounts, often more as can be seen by those who lead the market or solo dragons.

This can be seen most intensely in PVP where you now NEED to be a priest or fight at an absurdly large disadvantage. Of course, you cannot craft as a priest so you will need a crafter or hope someone else makes the slog to do that work for you.

2. Crafting

While One of wurms strengths is the 0-100 crafting system, it is often a “hurry up and wait” feeling. you rush to 50 masonry to build your first smelter and find it still takes you 3+hours to assemble it or the boat you want to build takes you 7 days of failing to attach objects.

Want to build a stone house? Mine out the rock, chisel the bricks, dig the sand, dig the clay, mix the mortar and eventually build each wall 1 action at a time.

3.Skilling

All of this skilling is done by watching a timed bar with each action increasing in time before the last. With some actions, you sit watching this bar for 30seconds a time only to not gain a skill tick as your outside the optimal gain or just simply didn’t get a “tick”. Using a 3RD party site you can do the math to get the best chance to get a skill tick depending on your action often landing at 50ish%. Of course, neither the game or the wiki will teach you any of this.

4.misinformation or just lies?

Due to the lack of information provided in any official capacity, you are often left at the whims of the community to teach you, people, who have also been taught wrong or lied to over their learning experience. An example of this lie/misinformation is “Low quality” and “High CoC” being the best for skilling up. This of courses is lacking a volume of information but to simplify, higher your skill the higher you’ll aim to improve to so higher ql tools and higher coc is actually several x better for any action for improvement. You also want to add in WOA to speed up the actions as you’ll gain more chances to gain skills via more timers being completed.

5. Support/staffing

This area is something you will read a lot about, the abuse the give etc I will avoid repeating this recurring issue and will instead turn to my current staffing experience.

This event occurred on the PvE server, something that occurs a lot apparently. I was out chopping trees grinding skill. Someone came along and lost their shit, resulting in them calling me names, griefer and that they would report me for it etc. I shrugged this off mostly, till another village mate said that, the other person had broken rules and had just harassed and that I should report it. At this point the person had added me to their deed guards KOS system, meaning I would be attacked by his or kingdom guards from near his deed.

So I looked on the forums and found the rule and it reads that he had broken the rules and I feared I was not the first or last person this player would/has effected. So I used the ingame /support function.

This function deals with all exploits, bug reports, harassment claims, payment issue. In general, it would be seen as a customer service tool, I of courses got a response by a Chat moderator (not directly staff but a representative of wurm) who in simple terms, had no idea or had decided the person had not broken any rules or that /support was any form of customer support service and resorted to accosting me for the report basically. I saw this was going nowhere so i requested he forward me to a GM (actual staff) and that we no longer discuss this further as it seems we had clashed. He refused, berated me more and then closed the support ticket. I have since sent this all the Head GM and after 72 hours still await any response.

Having waited so long and my current experience with staff professionalism now utterly without expectation i have used the /support system for a full refund to the game (having been advised they give NO REFUNDS EVER).

I can only say that they are the most unprofessional staff I have dealt with in ay video game.

6. Community

The community is a rather fragile thing to describe, toxic in many regards lovely in many many others. While the games heydays are long gone and the community continues to shrink, the people playing the game are all formidable in their commitment to the game. So much so that they prevent any real changed needed to save it or to improve it.

They do not wish to see anything to lessen the brutality that is the skill grind or to anything that might increase the relative speed/pacing of the game. They like it slow, uncertain and hard. Of course, this has its merits. Much of wurms reward is watching the numbers climb higher and higher and eventually your at the top with your 90 skill.

7. Macroing

Rife within the community, although it is against the rules. I personally have witnessed and been present during a conversation about macroing in the game. I actually reported a macroer previously before my return. This was a GM, with video evidence, i was banned on the forums and the report was ignored, they are still a GM today. Since then i have not and will not report any players.

8. RMT

With the launch to steam, wurm changes to the RMT policy to not allowed and a bannable offence, within 30 minutes of my joining the game i was offered to buy an account or gold. I personally have no issues with RMT in video games and personally am saddened by the change of policy. It is still here anyway.

9. Bugs/exploits

In this game bugs can be Huge, you might be able to benefit massively as many players have over the years. Bugs have no correlated response, some are ok to use i.e. old fountain pains. Others are ignored and the few that are fixed are never really fixed.

Reporting a bug while is good for the game does not me it will be fixed, often it leads to it becoming public and eventually abused by the masses. The devs are slow to fix anything.

They also offer no incentive to hand in a bug other than a title “clairvoyant” so if some finds a bug that allows them to achieve results and compete faster, often handing it in will both punish your gains, earnings and friends.

10. Animals

So let us say you have decided to try this game and your planning to breed animals. Well 2 issues, one you’ll need to find wild ones to bring back (almost impossible) and then you’ll need a deed with space to breed them. Wait for up to 10 rl days to hopefully have a horse give birth if there is space left on the creature cap.

11. Server release after server release

Wurm has a problem of keeping players, getting new players etc. Their solution is to just release a new server or new cluster. A fresh start, fresh skills and everyone one is on a levelling playing field again.

This last for all of 1 week, the guys with alts, bugs and knowledge spiral ahead and eventually when they hit the point of the old servers or cluster, they open them up and mix the servers again. Rinse and repeat. Ingame rare goods, gold always ends up in the same player’s hands as they have had years to gain wealth and accumulate skills.

Even with the new cluster, the separation of silver and accounts has to lead to the same players doing the same with, getting to the top sucking dry the community and the RMTing the profits (now on the downlow).

I think this is enough but there is far more reason to not play this game, ofc i do want to state this game is not all bad. It has had fun to it and many of the core features are really good, but it’s a

Wurm has been my go to game since 2006 when bored with whatever Mainstream MMO i was playing at the time. I've put more hours and money into it that i would like to even think about. That being said i can't recommend it anymore. The steam release was just a money grab from the dev team with promises of much needed improvement which we've seen nothing of. The launch of the new servers couldn't have been handled any worse than what it was. Don't bring up any of this in game chat though because a GM or CM will belittle you for having opinions of their game design skills then ban you from playing. I'll dearly miss wurm online and the friends i've had the pleasure of adventuring with.

I have, regretfully, played too many hours in the non-Steam client of Wurm Online. This is the type of game where after you've been suckered in to buying premium so you can enjoy the game beyond the low skill cap and also silver from the coin shop so that you can buy items from other player crafters, and then pay more silver to rent land to protect your items from theft, you realize that you've wasted a ton of time and money. Also the staff, specifically Retrograde the Public Relations Coordinator, is a big jerk that everyone complains about and has hurt the game more than anything. Don't waste your time with this game.

- Friendly community (Offered food and drinks when i entered peoples villages)
- Crafting is complex and meaningful
- The World is massive, easy to get lost with only a non-live map and a compass to use as a guide.
- Very affordable premium status if you want to take skills above 20 in each skill.
- Interesting roadmap ahead for Wurm Online for 2021 (Tutorials, Optimising the game etc)
- To best enjoy the game, find people and form or join a village!

First of all, I have thousands of hours into this game before it released on steam so don't go by just what the steam client says. And I'm actively playing this game despite this review. Read on.

Wurm is a game of failure. The game itself isn't, your toon is and you better get accustomed to being told that your toon sucks. Everything in this game, and I do mean EVERYTHING is skill based. If they ever add bowel movements to the game, even that would be skill based. Now that in itself isn't that uncommon. What is uncommon is the failure rate you'll experience based on your skills. Combine that with the fact that each skill-based action is on a crafting timer bar and the time sink becomes astronomical.

Allow me to explain. At the moment I'm building a ship. That ship has roughly 1,500 parts that need to be added. I'm able to queue 3 actions at once and at my skill level (after building several larger boats previously) those three actions take around 40 seconds to complete. So first, you calculate 1,500/3 = 500. Multiply that by 40 seconds = 20,000 which is around 5.5 hours. Ok, so you can build the boat in five and a half hours. Right? No. First you need to make the parts to put on the boat. That means going out and cutting down trees to make planks, and belaying pins and pegs, etc. So you need to cut down trees and get high quality ones. That's based on your skill at woodcutting and RNG. But it's also based on the axe you have and it's quality which is based on your blacksmithing skill and your mining skill. So, you need to be a blacksmith and have decent mining skills to get the ore to make that axe. Or you buy a nice axe from from another player for silver which equates to real money.

Ok, let's just assume you acquired a mid quality axe. You go chop trees down and make logs so you can make the parts for the boat. The quality of the tree you cut down is based on your axe and woodcutting and RNG. The max you'll get is equal to your woodcutting skill. Ok, let's say you cut down a max quality tree. Then you have to chop it up into logs. That is based on the quality of your axe and RNG. You may get crap logs, you may get great logs. Most if the time, half the logs you make are just garbage. So right off the bat, assume you'll need twice the number of logs that you anticipate. This takes hours by the way.

Next, you get to cut those logs up into the planks, pegs, etc. That again, is based on your carpentry skill, you shipbuilding skill and your tool quality... oh and RNG. Again, expect to toss half of the parts you make away as just garbage because the quality sucks.

But wait, why is part quality important? The lower the part quality the less chance you'll have of successfully attaching that part and each time you fail in attaching the part, the part becomes damaged, lowering it's quality and reducing the chance you'll have to attach it on the next try. Because of that, you end up failing to attach those parts. A LOT! You will also fail on some of these parts enough times that they become just useless scrap. What we calculated as a 5.5 hour grind turns into a weeks long nightmare of watching your toon fail and fail and fail and fail... I was told, the boat I'm working on usually takes players a month... you heard that right, a MONTH to build.

So how the hell do you tolerate a game with that much negative reinforcement and a grind that intolerable? You learn how to play while not playing. Right now I'm writing this review and occasionally alt-tabbing over to click the 'continue' craft button and paying as little attention as possible to the results of my ship building. It's too depressing. I've been pounding on this boat for about the last 5 hours and still haven't attached 100 parts because of the huge number of failures. And this is week three of working on this boat because I made the mistake a few times of watching my toon build it and got so disgusted I had to go do something else for a while.

So, play while not playing to save your sanity? Yes. First, get used to the idea that you are paying to be entertained but you rarely will be. Be prepared to find alternate means of entertaining yourself while playing. You see? Play while not playing. And be prepared to use those alternate means of entertainment while playing this game... LOTS. This isn't a game of instant gratification. You can spend YEARS playing casually and STILL suck.

I read a review that I think was in PC Mag and the reviewer discovered a technique that most Wurm players use. We watch movies while playing. And from a psychological standpoint, that's usually the sanest thing to do. Because if you sit and watch your toon fail again and again and again like I did, you'll either get pissed off and start raging or become depressed and suicidal. I chose the former of those two.

*edit*

Update & Clarification:

The boat I was working on was a Knarr. Those who have attempted such with <40 shipbuilding skill know the pain I endured. However, I finished it today after working on it 16 hours yesterday and another 8 today. It took 2 months of building lower skill boats, working on the deed we own and my wife mining and farming just to get the skills and decent materials to attempt building one. I probably should have waited another month and built a few more smaller boats just for sanity's sake.

While this game can be quite aggrivating at times, it can, in the long term, be gratifying. Seeing the wife sailing in her blueberry Knarr today put a smile on my face. Was it worth the mental anguish? I'm still debating that. But I do play it and I do pay for the premium.

I do NOT recommend it because most gamers today are accustomed to instant gratification. You play a game like WoW for a month and your toon is going to be well on it's way to end game content. You play Wurm for a month and your toon is gonna suck so bad that you'll pulling your hair out trying to craft even a half-way decent weapon.

If you're willing to accept having your ego bashed on a daily basis in exchange for completing long-term goals that take YEARS, by all means, come join us. Find an alliance to join with at least one RL psychologist who'll provide therapy and you'll do fine.

But, if your'e planning on being a badass in a couple of weeks like most gamers... move along. This isn't the game you're looking for.

I would like to preface my review by stating that I have no problem with paying a monthly subscription for this game, it is not a deal-breaker as the content provided is unique and very much what I am looking for in a truly sandbox MMO.

The game gives you a fresh, untouched world. Nothing exists but trees, landscape and animals. It is up to the players on the servers to harvest the local resources to build the world as they see fit. The level of detail in how you can consume, craft and terraform this world is what keeps me playing Wurm.

It will take you a long time to get past the early stages of the game. As of writing, I am almost 30 hours in, and I have yet to fully build my first house. I spent the first 10 hours wandering the wilderness, seeing what other people have built, and finding myself a secluded area in a forest, a small distance from the starting point. I have flattened some land, dug down and created a mine which luckily I found an iron vein within 3 tiles. Near that mine I built a forge, where I could turn iron ore into iron, which I could then craft in to parts for building storage containers and buildings.

I've not even scratched the surface with the newly released servers to go with Steam, but there is so much more to do and I can't wait to build up the skills to create my own little settlement I can call home.

Free to play restrictions too high. Can be fun with a group of people but you hit the same wall you do in runescape imo. The point where you grind hundreds of hours for extremely small gains.

Permanent impacts to the world, and community interdependence are the strong suits to this game. The dedication you do to a skill can make you really valued.

However the game is dated, hundreds of things are unclear and require googling outdated wiki guides just to learn how to do things. Not even just how to do things, but known bugs or problems that have been in the game forever. When you reach this point very few things are 'valid' to be playing optimally. Had some very toxic experiences on the PVP server myself dealing with the already present community as a new player.

Steer away imo. Early game is especially rough and is borderline slave labor. Truely a suffering simulator for grinders.

The developers of the game are narrow-minded, they don't listen to what their players tell them, therefore there are a lot of bugs and glitches which haven't been fixed for years and the community is quite aggressive, there are a lot of fights.

Furthermore they abandoned their last game already, which was a lot better because actually people from the community could fix the mistakes done by the developers and it was way cheaper. Wurm Online is really slow and often feels like a second job and it is very expensive it is listed as free but that is just a trick irl you have to pay subscription fees every month, so it is not really free if you want to really play it, the trial is nice but limits you in all ways you can imagine. Without paying you can't even ride a horse and without riding a horse you are so slow that you need to quit your job just to move from one point to another in this game.

Would have been nice to have a tutorial that helped you play the game instead of spending hours on youtube watching how to play. Also you have to pay to keep a settlement monthly or other players will destroy what you make and get mad at you for building close to their settlement. You start of weak and if you venture too far from the main settlement you will get killed by creatures or sometimes other players who don't want you near their settlement. Don't waste your time on this game.

Very slow paced which i like kinda feel peacefull and feel like living in it. For that also addictive. Needs good amount of time to enjoy it. STAY AWAY, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ![b]

It is a psychological [b]trap
for people wanting to play for free, eg. it should not be listed as free-to-play here on Steam !
You can read about the restrictions for free players here.
That means you will be wasting your time if you plan to play for free...
A small list of what is restricted:
- Skill level caps.
- Playstyle cap.
- Crafting cap.
- Transportation caps.
- You can't steal but paying players can...
- Account gets deleted after 90 days of idle.
I wasted 3 hours of my life before i noticed these restrictions on their wiki...

Wurm is absolutely not a game for everyone.
Let me preface this review with that - it's the truth of it. Wurm Online will likely not be for you, generally speaking. It has quite an old premium model, though things have been updated here and there. It's generally seen as low-graphic, and confusing.
But Wurm is the sort of world that if it suits you, you will get lost in, physically and mentally and emotionally.
Wurm Online (along with its sibling, Wurm Unlimited) is a sandbox that is about as sandbox as it gets, within its rules. It's still an RPG, ish - think Skyrim, but as a MUD with graphics, sort of - but it's a sandbox first. Everyone who is on a given land is on the same land, with no instances of any kind, and you can settle anywhere according to the rules and play how you want, truly. I myself tend to play a sort of lone wolf, and personally I use Wurm as a build-it and chore simulator to keep myself busy. But the friends I've gained here through Wurm have stayed since I've made them, and given that I was raised on the old MMO subscription model, literally since the age of two, it's a game that will always be in my heart.
If Wurm is for you, then it'll take over your gaming time. That's a threat and a promise both. But you'll never know if you don't give it a shot, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Mindless repetition, will have you staring at a timer the whole time. Literally one of the most boring games. Click, watch timer count down, click, watch timer count down. Oh, and if you try to use any type of auto clicker, even if its built into your gaming mouse, you get banned. This game is a huge joke. Just a crappy game with crappy devs. It may say free to play, but its not, its pay to win bullcrap. And the best thing is, people have been playing this game for a decade who will just poop on you if you ever go to pvp. you spent a month getting 25 body str? here comes big prick rick with his 80 str to one shot you. Seriously dont waste your time.

The reason half the reviews are positive is because this game has had a core die-hard community for the past 15 years that have literally lived most of their life on this game.

However the hard truth is 90% of new players will not enjoy this game. It's very old, clunky and slow paced.

The majority of your time will be spent staring at loading bars because absolutely anything you want to accomplish is gated behind a repetition with a long action timer. You want to set up a base? Better take the next few months off work because you are going to need to stare at action timers 10 hours a day just to achieve even a basic set-up. Also fun fact- you have to pay real life money just to claim a piece of land or else everyone can take your stuff and it decays.

It also has an over-zealous moderation team that treat the in-game chat and discord like their personal chat room (I got perma banned for having this avatar). This selective banning may be what accounts for the fact that Wurm has one of the most depressing communities I've seen. I'd love to see data on the suicide rate of Wurm players because these are some truly miserable, humorless people. I guess it makes sense because you kind of have to have given up on life to resign your fate to sitting there all day clicking a button and watching a 20 second timer tick down for thousands of hours.

Steam has me at 1,5 hours of play time, that time was me just getting error messages or server disconnects. I have yet to see the game lol

I was going to write a huge post about the corrupt developers, unstable development of the game, mismanagement, and censorship, but Traslogan wrote a huge detailed review here about it. Go and find it for all the details you need.

Once I can play the game instead of different error codes each time it starts. I will post a new review.

Fantastic game. Just build a little hut, do some farming, fish, mine and chill out.
