This is one of the best looking boomer shooters out there. Sadly the praise stops here for me.

It looks incredible but the gameplay is too awkward to be fun.

The combat in and of itself is easy and the difficulty is mostly generated by convoluted level design, damage-spongy enemies and a loooot of tedious platforming.

There are way too many situations where you get ambushed while on a high and narrow ledge and, since there's no fall damage, your best bet is to fall back to a place with more wiggle room, fight the dudes and then traverse that section all over again.

The only times I died were those times where the game throws you into a small room where you don't have any movement options and drops 30 enemies on you. Whenever the game becomes hard, it is blatantly artificial and has almost nothing to do with your skill or game knowledge.

Instead of encouraging you to push forward, strafe, sidestep out of the way and generally have more of an aggressive playstyle, Amid Evil forces you to be conservative, fall back and just kite, kite, kite. In my opinion the design philosophy that surrounds this game is pedantic because despite all the cool details thrown in, it's obvious that the functionality of the level design and the fluidity of the gameplay stopped being a priority at some point.

Now, I do have a long playtime on this game and that's because I really wanted to like it. I completed it on evil difficulty, I replayed the levels and hunted for secrets, tried different playstyles and I gave it another shot recently just to be sure that I wasn't approaching it the wrong way. Sometimes games just don't click with you on your first playtrough and I wanted this to be one of those cases but it isn't.

Not every game has to be as good as Dusk is but this one is not even as good as Quake and that one came out in 1996. Quake is still a masterpiece to this day but a lot of the newer movement shooters like the aforementioned Dusk, made improvements upon that formula and became even better.

Sadly, Amid evil is not one of those and it feels more like a step back from Quake. If it can't beat a game that came out more than 20 years ago, then I would rather play the old one all over again and have a lot more fun with it

Very addicting gameplay with a variety of magic weapons. The level design was also very interesting. I did not like some of the platforming, however. But overall this is definitely worth the 20 bucks.

This is now my favorite retro shooter and here's why.

Firstly, level design is everything when it comes to these kinds of games, and Amid Evil strikes a brilliant balance between memorable and well designed so the player never gets lost.

Every weapon has their place in your arsenal. Even the starting battle axe shines against certain enemies.

And lastly there are NOT enough fantasy themed shooters.

Fantastic game, couldn't recommend it enough.

Amid Evil is a FPS “Boomer Slasher” game developed Indefatigable and published by boomer shooter gods New Blood Interactive for PC and apparently the Switch. I can’t really say too much on the origins of this game, other than the Wikipeeds said that the two devs were childhood friends and they were involved in the development of the Rise of the Triad remake in 2013, a game that I played for a bit before I stopped due to personal issues. However, this mod apparently started as a DOOM mod before evolving into what it is today, and takes A LOT of inspiration from the likes of Hexen and Heretic, old FPS games with more magical and fantasy based demon murder. How I found this game was simple, I saw DUSK and when the same guys said we’re publishing this game I got it on a whim during early access cause I’m weak for boomer shooters.

The plot is short and simple: you play as a champion summoned to purge the “Evil Force” from sacred lands; and that’s basically what you do. There’s no real plot other than going into strange arcane places and murdering demonic creatures, though at the end you ascend to the “Haven of the Ancients”, a special realm for worthy champions that has a pool of prophecy which shows everything on fire which is nice. It’s more of a sequel thing and that’s fine, not everything needs to have this big expounding of lore and history (though like other old FPS games you can find hints written on the walls if you want to follow along with it). There’s not much to go on unless you go to the Wiki but for the most part like a lot of old school first person shooters it’s minimalistic.

The Sound/Art Design is pretty fantastic; I’ll start with the art design and graphics because this game hits one of my weak spots: retro graphics. It’s not like say DOOM engine or Build Engine, it’s Unreal Engine 4.27 apparently so it’s like high definition retro graphics? Or maybe it’s not, I’m not sure because from when I played it, it had some pixelation but not enough to be looking like the older games or even like DUSK, which looks more like Quake than anything else; one steam review I read had it say “The grass in Amid Evil is somehow both 2D and the thickest, lushest grass I’ve seen in a long time” which is pretty accurate considering the style that it’s going for, some unique combination of old and new looking that I can’t complain about and I’m sure looks even better with all the high res settings and such. The environmental designs surrounding the graphics look amazing, each place is unique on its own with places ranging from mountain caves with lakes to floating libraries in space to desert looking gladiatorial to my favorite: The Void being the final episode. TV Tropes described it as a combo of MC Esher and Salvador Dali on drugs, I don’t know art but what I can say is the first thing that popped in my mind, even if impossible, is Non-Euclidean Geometry, which is basically space and shapes unable to be seen by the human eye. Now that’s not realistic to gameplay but it’s such a strange labyrinthian structure that I can’t help but marvel at its aesthetic design. The soundtrack is decent too, varying from what sounds like gregorian chants with aggressive strings to synthwave sounding stuff composed by Andrew Hushult. Overall, everything on this end is pretty solid and can’t complain either.

The gameplay is the standard FPS old school affair, you go from place to place unlocking certain doors with keys while using the standard weapon types (the rocket launcher replacement is cool as hell as it’s a planet launcher, which is hilarious cause there’s a little detail where you can actually shoot Earth and blow it up, though it doesn’t do anything in game obviously) to fight a variation of enemies on the map (whose AI are actually pretty good and don’t just sit in place and will actively follow and try to kill you, forcing you to think tactically) and also finding secrets (like secret dev rooms, messages, an in-joke within New Blood about Big John and Dopefish, etc.). If there was one thing that I could say really pops out is that there’s a decent bit of detail, like using the Axe and the special soul power (unlocked by killing multiple enemies and stealing their souls) underwater will shoot you off like a propeller even if it’s moreso just a quicker way of gibbing enemies. Again you have sprinkles of lore around scattered on walls for those that are interested, there’s a decent bit. Also connecting all of these levels is a hub called “The Gateway of the Ancients) which is a bit on the bigger side and leads to all seven episodes; one thing I will say can be a bit on the frustrating side (which I’m used to) is that for the most part the levels are big, and you can find your way through them but the size can also lead to confusion on where you’re supposed to go sometimes. Overall, not much I can say about this other than if you like old school first person shooters you’ll get more of the same from here, but it also feels pretty damn good.

This review is a shorty for a couple of reasons, one I played it last year so it’s been a while and two, there’s not a lot I feel I can say about retro fps games other than, “I like them a lot”, when done right. This game is done really well and I can’t really say much else other than if you’re looking for a 7 ½ to 8 hour FPS retro game that you should get it, 20 dollars isn’t a bad price for it either. I decided I’d write up a little review recommending this as August 18th marks the release of its DLC, the Black Labyrinth and I’m definitely looking forward to it!! Ya know, when I can afford to pay it after I take care of rent and such. Of course other things they’ve released in the meantime is a VR port, and a free DLC called Ancient Alphas which is just a couple of old alpha maps you can try if you like.

As I was such a big fan of Doom the idea of Heretic always sounded great but the game never really hooked me in the same way. Many years later here comes Amid Evil to give me exactly what I didn't even know I wanted, a fast paced Quake meets Heretic shooter with a great fantasy aesthetic and some bad ass magic weaponry, and it is just pure old school FPS joy to play. Each act has its own unique set of enemies and beautifully designed sprawling levels, each weapon looks and feels good to use and there is some truly gorgeous use of lighting, it's really impressive. This is my first New Blood Interactive purchase and I don't think it will be my last.

The positives: It is a good shooter with just the right amount of difficulty, the story is very minimal, which is great as retro shooters shouldn't really focus on story to begin with. It's fun killing enemies and there are some options for high end PC's like ray tracing, and that's a definite plus. It's also well implemented and it kinda works with it's 3D environment and sprite based like graphics. The graphics are very unique, I will give you that. Also it's really fun and satisfying collecting all the powerups and ammo scattered around the map.

The music is nothing special

The negatives: It's a bit short, as many here have said, it takes about 7-8 hours to beat the entire game, but probably my greatest minus is the lack of workshop mod support. I genuinely think games like these deserve mod support, as retro style shooters are a perfect modding opportunity. I also think for the amount of content, the pricing might not be for everyone. I'd price this at maybe 10$, although it might change as they add more content.

Solid 8/10, great game, buy it if you like retro shooters.

Visually, this game is amazing. Beautiful. It is easily the best part about this game.

The soundtrack is really good too and very fitting. Every episode has a great soundtrack that goes along with it's theme.

Gameplay, well, gets a little stale 3/4 into the game. The issues with the way it feels to play the game don't show up immediately, you'll start to notice them a lot towards the end of the game. The weapons feel ok but they don't feel punchy enough or feel like they do enough damage to make you feel addicted to using them. They have a 7/10 feel. All of them. The more powerful weapon alternatives for each ammo type eat up ammo too fast so you'll resort to using the cheaper weapons most of the time which don't feel like they do enough. Think playing classic doom and always running around with your pistol. That's what this game feels like. Or think quake and it's tanky enemies that you don't just kill in a couple of shots. Quake balanced that by not throwing in so many at a time, but this game doesn't take that balance into consideration, so you often find yourself circlestrafing around a horde of tanky small enemies and shooting them with a weapon that feels like it needs an upgrade.

I generally liked all episodes, some a lot more than others, but the final chapter of the game is abysmal. It's psychedelic and appealing visually, but the obnoxious tanky enemies flying around that melt your hp in seconds (I wish there was a hitscan weapon to deal with them more efficiently) while you're trying to figure out where the hell you're supposed to go and not fall of the map (a void full of random shapes and stairs and doors and portals)... it's easily the games weakest point. Such a slog to get through.

In conclusion, the game looks amazing, the soundtrack is great, the combat is fun at first but it's flaws become more and more apparent towards the end of your playthrough (weapons feeling laggy and weak), and the last episode is pretty bad. I still recommend it though, but you're probably only gonna play through it once.

Amid Evil is a Retro FPS that chooses to replace your typical shotgun, with an array of magical ranged weapons, not too dissimilar from a Mage playthrough in Hexen. Movement is tight, enemies react well to your attacks, and the game just FEELS good to play.

Amid Evil is truly a work of art. Right from the onset you are sucked in by the beautiful visuals, and more so, if you feel like melting your computer, it even has RTX support. I unfortunately do not have the capabilities to have utilized this, but google away and watch your mind get blown. Amid Evil is just a game that does everything right. It uses the classic Quake portal select to choose your difficulty, then you are whisked away to the first few levels. Eventually you get access to a hub world, which I personally love, as it allows you to tackle any of the remaining episodes in whatever order you want. The weapon selection is just a joy, every weapon you find is incredibly unique, and most importantly each one has its own uses. Even towards the very end of the game I was using the full arsenal I have amassed.

Enemy and level variety is top tier as well, each episode contains a new set of enemies, and VASTLY different landscapes that kept the entire playthrough feeling new and enjoyable throughout. This is a game that does everything right. My only qualm, and its minor, is bosses. They were just way too easy (aside from the final one). The thing is, you have a “super” ability that you charge up through playing the game. Activate this to go into a “super” form, granting new fire modes for all your weapons. Here's where balancing becomes an issue, most of those alt fires while in that form, can melt a boss in seconds. And even when playing Axe start only, most boss arenas hand you a full arsenal and a full charge of your power before you walk in, leaving every boss in the game feeling like a joke. But again, it didn’t affect my playthrough one bit, and I thoroughly fell in love with this game and its aesthetics, and can not wait to play the upcoming DLC!

I got this after playing the amazing DUSK and was disappointed. The guns feel good but the game is way too easy and the level design and combat encounters are uninteresting.

P.S. Steam messed up the time tracking when I played this, it says 1.4hrs but I actually finished the game.

Amid Evil is one of the best classic shooters of recent years. There are only a few problems I have with it so let's get those out of the way first. The graphics, although wonderfully fitting and awesome, can be hard for the eyes sometimes. The wall writings have displayed a tad too big on the screen making it difficult to read in frantic moments. A few enemies are too spongey and those green enemies in Solar Solstice can jump way too far. But the rest, oh boy the rest. The weapons are different and it feels like every kind of them has its purpose. I love that they share the same ammunition in form of mana but there is never a weapon you would always use when you have high green or blue mana. There is always a situation or an enemy type that shouts out for an effective staff or sword. Then there are a lot of different episodes all with a different look and enemies. There is a episode that feels a bit like Thief and their mechanist Order of the Hammer. There is Quake kinda episode. Another episode feels like a Lovecraftian temple. The overall feel with the weapons and magic is more like Hexen. Nothing looks the same and even within the episodes there are even chances between singular levels. The gameplay is fast-paced and action-packed as it should be. You will be strafing around and aiming at those variant foes like in the good old days. This is next to Dusk and Hellbound a great boomer shooter.

Amid Evil is easily one of the most memorable and nicest looking boomer shooter I have ever played. All the individual levels look fantastic both stylistically and purely from a graphical point of view (Arcane Expanse is seriously the most beautiful area I have seen in any FPS game). With weapon selections a tad more limited than other contemporary old-man pew-pew games, it easily makes up for it with how distinctly different they feel and how the enemies and the area you fight them in your encounters greatly affects how and which one you use (unlike in games such as Doom Eternal where you just use the super shotgun and you are good to go for the rest of the game).

This above mentioned gameplay choice is what makes Amid Evil, despite the level design being more quake-like, remind me of Serious Sam far more despite how stupid it may sounds. That being said, Amid Evil is destinctly its own thing and is definitely one of, if not the most inspired and enjoyable elderly shoot out experiences I've had in recent memory.

AMID EVIL is yet another amazing retro FPS game, that has the looks and feel of original classics like Heretic and Hexen. The story is plain and simple, you are playing as the champion who cleanses the realms of evil to please the gods.

Pros:
- The game looks fantastic, it's a mix between low polygon enemies and modern effects, such as lighting etc.
- Game runs really well most of the time
- AMD FSR Support
- DLSS and RTX Support for those who have RTX cards and want maximum quality
- 7 great episodes, every single one of them have unique locations with unique enemies
- Great variety in enemies throughout all 7 episodes
- The weapons at your disposal are all great and efficient in their own ways
- You can collect the souls of your enemies to have a temporary boost for all of your weapons
- It has an endless gamemode, like every retro shooter I've played recently
- Steam achievements, cards, backgrounds etc.

Neutral:
- Not the lengthiest game for its price (About ~7 hours)
- Soundtrack is great that fits the theme of the game, but not memorable.

Cons:
- Had some moments where I had no idea where to go or what to do next.
- I found boss fights to be way too easy, even on Hard

9/10 Well honestly, the game doesn't have that many flaws. It's just good old fashioned retro shooter fun, if such term exists.

Exquisite shooter: starts out in dungeons and gets more open and ostentatious in its levels leading up to assaults on giant haunted mansions and temples of nature. It starts off well and just gets better and better. Apart from the boss fights: they're not bad, they're actually okay and do break up the exploration and minion-hammering well enough but they're not exquisite but they'll do in a more than passable way.
Crank it up to Hard level for a fun ride, Normal mode is a kerb-stomp on the monsters and that's coming from me, the worst gamer (it's true, I die on all tutorials). Also, use the overdrive often, I didn't use it enough but it's really satisfying to elevate your weapons to levels of destruction that the US-military-with-its-proliferate-bases-dotted-around-the-world-to-increase-its-horrific-hegemony levels would 'gasm over.
I was ready to not get into 'boomer shooters' after trying the first few boring levels of Hedon but fortunately found this title before jumping into another genre. Go for it, trust me.

If you look for a good throwback fpf/boomer shooter look no further.

-Great visuals and aesthetic (CHONKY PIXELS with Ray Tracing)
-Fantastic weapons
-Goregous level design
-Fun and engaging gunplay
-Music by Andrew Hulshult (if you don't know who it is then you are dead to me)
-It's better than sex

But don't take my word for it, just go and buy (or play DEMO) so you also can become New Blood simp like a rest of us!

It's just a joy to play this! Movement and weapons feel amazing. Level design is on the next level. Everything looks shiny and beautiful. Tons of variety. Great soundtrack. Just finished my second playthrough on evil difficulty and the challenge was just spot on. It does have a few problems like some maps being just narrow strips of geometry to walk on, how are you supposed to dodge enemy fire walking on that without falling off? I also always felt discouraged to use my weapon powerups as I wanted to save my one charge for a tougher battle. The game really should allow storing more charges to fix that. Let me have fun with it! Then there are invisibility buffs in places with barely any enemies. Just make those an item I can activate whenever I want. Also, did I mention that I think Leon is cute?

I've played this for about 3 hours now. All I can say is that Amid Evil is a fun game with old-school fps graphics and gameplay. It's basically Heretic/Doom/Quake with high-quality retro graphics.
Also the art style and music are pretty good. Even if you're not going to play the game, just listen to its soundtrack.

Great, fun and fast gameplay. Timeless retro style mixed with some modern stuff like ray tracing. The game world gets weirder as you progress, the last levels especially feel surreal. Bosses could have been a bit harder in my oppinion, as it took not that long to bring them down. Overall difficulty seems very balanced. One of the best FPSs I played in recent years! Just a ton of fun. Would even recommend this game to my worst enemy :-)

Another great game from New Blood.

I think I liked the level design and gameplay a little more in this game than I did in DUSK, but I just can't put one over the other. Both of these games are extremely fun and they both have their own small but incredibly unique quirks and styles.

I'm trying to wait for ULTRAKILL to fully release before I grind it out, but I genuinely can't wait. :)

Amid Evil is a first-person shooter with a medieval theme by Indefatigable, which was founded by some of the developers behind the 2013 reboot of Rise of the Triad.

Gameplay

Amid Evil’s gameplay is designed like an old-school FPS, where you play as a fast character that kills a lot of enemies per level.

There is no armor in the game, so your character is a bit squishier than in games like Doom or Quake. This means you’ll have to make sure you’re constantly moving because enemies can make mincemeat out of you quickly if you aren’t constantly on the move.

The gameplay also borrows a bit from the game Hexen. Like Hexen, weapons are magic-infused staves and medieval weapons that are powered by mana instead of ammo, down to having the same blue and green mana that Hexen had. The game adds two extra mana types, orange and purple for some variety.

The game features seven weapons. Some of these are fairly typical FPS weapons with a medieval twist, while others are unorthodox in how they work. The Star of Torment is a mace that behaves like a shotgun, but shoots projectiles that pin enemies to the wall when killed, while the Voltrider is a fairly weak hitscan weapon that can cause dying enemies to explode if you keep hitting them with it as they die, causing electricity to spew out of the victim’s body and annihilate any living enemies near the victim.

The arsenal is well-balanced. Each weapon has its own purpose, and you’ll be finding new ways to use weapons as you proceed. For example, the Staff of the Azure Orb, the first ranged weapon you’ll get, is your best weapon against small flying enemies and enemies that like to dodge your attacks because it’s projectiles home in on enemies. This makes it very useful throughout the game instead of being the token crappy starter weapon. Even the game’s melee weapon, the axe, is useful due to how powerful it is. You’ll find yourself switching weapons often instead of relying on one or two obviously overpowered weapons throughout the entire game, making combat feel dynamic and fun throughout the entire game. It’s one of those games where you can tell a lot of care was put into making all of your weapons useful, and it shows.

The game also has powerful alt-fires for each weapon, like in Hexen, but they’re triggered differently. Instead of using a consumable item, they’re activated by collecting souls dropped from dead enemies and found in levels. Once your “soul meter” is at 100%, you can enable alt-fires for a limited time by hitting the alt-fire key. The time you have alt-fires can be extended by collecting souls while you’re in alt-fire mode.

The alt-fire modes kick your weapons into overdrive. The Voltrider turns into a beam gun that melts the opposition, the Star of Torment shoots more projectiles that home in on enemies, and the game’s BFG9000 clone, the Aetherum, shoots black holes that can kill everything except bosses in one hit, but can also kill you if you’re too close to it.

These alt-fire modes are a great addition to the game. Besides being a blast to use, they’re also handy for getting out of a sticky situation. Since they can be used at any time once the soul meter is full, it might be tempting to conserve it until you absolutely need it, but levels have enough souls that you can go nuts with them.

The only issue with the alt-fires is that the Axe and Staff of the Azure Orb have fairly underwhelming alt-fires that are either a fun but not the most practical gimmick (the axe) or made obsolete by another weapon’s alt-fire (the Staff of the Azure Orb). It’s not much of a problem though, since the other weapons have great alt-fires and you’ll always have a ranged weapon when you can activate alt-fire mode, so you’ll never need to depend on the axe’s alt-fire.

Each episode has its own enemies, which makes them play differently from each other. Enemies follow generic types, such as “big flying guy” or “small cannon fodder”, but they have just enough quirks per episode to make you change how you play. One episode might have dodge-happy enemies, while another will have lots of cannon fodder that’s small and surprisingly fast, forcing you to use a weapon in a way you weren’t expecting, then the next episode will make you focus more on taking down mini-bosses with powerful weapons. It adds a lot of variety to episodes.

Levels

The game is broken down into seven episodes with four levels each, with the last level being a dedicated boss level. There is also a secret gag level and a standalone bonus level that’s meant to show off RTX lighting. Completing each episode will strip you of every weapon except the axe.

Make no mistake; this game’s levels are gorgeous. They might look pixely and a little ugly in images, but it’s completely different in motion. The colors are vivid and there’s a lot of unique architecture (particularly in later episodes) that’ll make you say “wow!” when you see it. The episodes Arcane Expanse and The Abyss in particular are a perfect blend of great color usage and amazing architecture. Even the skyboxes are great, mixing realistic skies with old-school looking mountains that perfectly nail the look of how old skyboxes. You’ll find RTX lighting makes levels look even better, so turn it on if your GPU can support it.

The unique architecture isn’t just for show; you’ll often find yourself walking or jumping through it. This means you’ll occasionally be fighting enemies on tight but spiraling paths or unusual architecture, so the cool-looking architecture provides for fun and unique challenges instead of merely being eye candy. It’s great to see a developer use cool-looking architecture for gameplay instead of being merely background props.

Levels are large, except for boss stages. You’ll likely spend around 15 minutes for levels in your first playthrough, so there’s plenty of meat in each episode despite them being “only” four levels each. This gives episodes great pacing; there’s enough content in each episode to make it a satisfying romp, but they never overextend their stay.

The actual level design itself is straightforward. Where you’re supposed to go is clearly laid out and levels are chunked in a way that you’re not going to have to do things like backtrack all the way back to a small and obscure area at the start of a map after getting a key on the opposite side of the level.

There is a bit of platforming in this game, but it’s fine for the most part since your character has good air control and platforms are wide enough that there’s plenty of space to land on. There are two episodes where the platforming segments might give someone trouble: the heavy amount of platforming in The Forge and the water bubbles in the Arcane Expanse, which have unusual mechanics that’ll take some time bit to get used to.

The worst levels are in The Forge. The Forge’s level design puts too much emphasis on annoying traps and jumping around, which gets grating after a while. There’s a bit of platforming in other episodes, sure, but The Forge combines a lot of platforming segments with traps that just get on your nerves after a while, like having to run between gears that can crush you, ride gears up and hop between them to get somewhere, or hit switches, avoid spikes, and jump on platforms before the platforms retract, forcing you to do the whole thing over. Lots of platforming and traps in one episode just doesn’t work together in an FPS. At least the enemies are fun and challenging.

Final thoughts

Amid Evil is a very well-made FPS that combines a great weapon set, a diverse cast of enemies, and amazing levels to create a fantastic experience. It draws influence from old FPS games, such as Hexen and Unreal 1, but stands on its own as a unique experience instead of being a mere copy of 90s FPS games. It’s highly recommended for any fans of FPS games or for gamers that want a feast for the eyes.

Retro style FPS with very fancy weapons that never stop being useful and very tight fast paced combat. There might be annoying platforming, traps, and sewer-like sections, but that is to be expected from the genre. Not a huge fan of the visuals overall, but gotta hand it to the game, the 2D sprite weapons with normal maps and reflections look amazing. The game only crashed twice on me, and only on activating the Soul Mode, and there are some janky-ass mover clipping instances, but otherwise the gameplay and level design is amazing. Also, memes, I guess. But no humanoid female enemies =(

Pretty damn fun game for the money, and the team really seems to care about the game and the people who play it. Really special studio that makes some banging games. If you've finished this, I recommend DUSK as well.

Inspired by classic FPS games (Quake, Hexen, Heretic), Amid Evil does carry the feel of these old games but not without its flaws.

Early maps are not that impressive and their enemy types are not unique. To see what the game has to offer, you gonna need to push yourself to the later half of the game. It is where map designs are really fleshed out and enemies more unique and challenging as well.

The weapon arsenal are good but I feel they could have been tweaked with their firing speed (e.g. the spike wand does not fire instantly).

Overall I do recommend the game if you are into classic FPS games.

this game made platforming in doom eternal 10 times better.

in late game you'll spend 80% of the game time doing stupid platforming more than an actual combat. no big fight. and most of the time when you got to big fight you'll never notice it cause you'll be sleepy like when you're in an online class from those boring platforming.

its like new blood's level designer just cant make the game challenging enough in late game(and they probably self aware to that) so they just throw a lot like A LOT of platforming at you, to make combat feels like a blessing. and those platforming are like a narrow ledges with insta kill pit or just plain boring and tediousness kind of platforming.

overall this game starts high and ends low and maybe too low and level designers just need to step up their game.

i dont know why tbh but NB had so much great tools to make a great game but they just not fully embrace it like they just holding it back for some reason. this game have shitty map design that just made me feels sleepy when i play it cause lack of actions. dusk have too low amount of enemies in each map and lot of horror(filler) sections, too much small corridor that is not compliment with the solid gameplay like strife jumping. i mean like, come on, have some balance you nailed the gameplay on every game but map designers just dont know how to make a map to synergize with the gameplay so they just make gimmicky level instead.

In the modern boomer shooter, you need something to really make you stand out amongst the crowd.

Amid Evil decides to do that by having some of the most satisfying combat design I've played. Every weapon is useful, feels good to use, and the enemies keep you on your toes by changing constantly. Amid Evil makes you feel as heroic as if you were smashing through mythology itself. Play it.

Amid Evil is outstanding. Incredible job from such a small development team.

I completed my playthrough with RTX enabled, and it was a smooth experience throughout at 2560x1440 @ 144 hz. (RTX 3080, Ryzen 9 3900XT).

Particular Highlights:
Gameplay - Incredibly satisfying weapon selection. With my favourite weapon being the Celestial Claw. Amid Evil never fails in making you feel powerful.
Map Design - The Map design is outstanding, visually breathtaking yet interesting. Some puzzle elements, but not enough to grind the gamepace to a halt.
Atmosphere - Dark and Brooding. Fits the Dark Fantasy FPS genre perfectly.
Soundtrack - 10/10, Dark but beautiful Fantasy Ambience. Sprinkle in some epic tracks at the right time, and boom. Amid Evil's soundtrack is a masterpiece.

Overall, if you're at all interested in games like Quake, Hexen, Blood, Doom, Dusk, or any boomer shooters. This is an absolute must buy. I would also recommend to FPS fans who are looking for something a little different to sink their teeth into.

Amazing. 10/10.
Excellent work from Indefatigable. Recommended.

This game makes me feel nothing...I just run around like a headless chicken shooting things with no reason or motivation. The maps are horrible and far too open and bare to be able to navigate properly so you just end up running around and around...collect something....shoot something....

Never played an FPS that just feels so empty.

It looks amazing!! But the game just lacks that special sauce...

I prefer Nightmare Reaper as the level design and game mechanics feel tight and have a purpose. The guns feel good and killing feels good. Map progression feels logical and intelligent...same goes for Ion Fury.

But this game, Amid Evil, and Dusk just feel really lacking. They look the part...the play kinda well but they just have no weight...they feel shallow...pointless?!? And what is with all enemies just running at you??!? How is that fun...

Hard to put into words but I'm sure you'll understand if you play them....

Not for me...only shows me how amazing Doom really is!!

(I've installed this game 3 times and every time I only last 20 mins before I'm bored stupid.)

I think it's kind of a mix between Quake and Doom, where its more of a run and gun type game, with very slidey movement like in Doom. The weapons are OK, but every enemy takes at least two hits to kill, and you end up just moving in circles, spamming the mouse button till you win. but i guess that's the point of this type of game, so I'd recommend it. It is pretty fun!

Fast, furious, challenging, beautiful, slick... and insanely fun.
And now with RTX full ray tracing and DLSS 2.0!

I've played Amid Evil twice throuugh in a year and with RTX added, I'll be playing it more and more.

A homage to old school magic shooters like Heretic while possessing the soul of Quake, Amid Evil is a magnificent wizard warrior smack-down where you go from blighted realm to blighted realm cleansing them of evil...by force. The enemies are varied and numerous, the weapons powerful and satisfying, and the maps are complex and littered with secrets to discover. Much in the vein of the old build engine games, you can always find that extra powerful weapon a little early.

In my opinion, the best way to enjoy this game is Warrior Mode on Evil difficulty, meaning you always start with your powerful melee axe and nothing else. It makes the magical weapons scattered about the levels more satisfying and impactful to find. If you're an old school shooter veteran, Evil difficulty should be very doable and engaging. You can quick save as often as you like or not at all. The game auto saves whenever you get a major key during level progression, or you can go super hardcore and choose to restart the level if you die.

Compare this game to other great retro shooters like Dusk and Ion Fury and you'll get the idea of what you're in for. There's even lore tidbits to read, although unlike the modern Doom games, you don't really have to work for them since most of it already exists in your codex. Mostly just there for flavor. Welcome for sure, but not the game's strong point.

The game's strong point is circle strafing, fast grabbing health and mana, and annihilating scores of enemies, most of which will run right at you hellbent on killing you. If that's your sort of pleasure (and it certainly is mine), I highly recommend Amid Evil.

Only bad thing I can really say is I didn't really care for most of the weapons. Its a great game though, almost like playing 7 small games since each episode is completely different.

I played this game when it came out and I really didn't enjoy it for a lot of reasons.
I decided to come back now to try it again and while they fixed some things it is still something I can't recommend. As a big fan of old-school shooters I thought I would like this game and I really enjoyed DUSK and it looked a lot like a mix of HeXen and Heretic, but it ended up being more like Painkiller.
That isn't a bad thing as Painkiller is a great game but Amid Evil feels more like a fan-game or mod that doesn't end up being as good as the original game.

There is some good stuff though as the art style and the maps look very pretty, the weapons look really cool and have cool ideas (Like a weapon that shoots planets that explode), and the Soul Mode you get from collecting souls is like Tome of Power from Heretic and Demon Mode from Painkiller. It makes all the weapons have new powerful attacks. At the sametime the weapons have a weird feeling balance as weapons share the same ammo so some are straight up upgrades or just aren't fun to use.

I still had fun with this game but I couldn't keep playing after awhile and felt done with it.

Fantastic game, if you liked DUSK come play this. if you like this and didn't play DUSK, go play DUSK!

Movement feels like Serious Sam, with Soul Mechanics taken from Painkiller. Feels Good.

Weaponry quake-style and all round entertaining and fun combat with great maps and a nice classic progressive and varied environment/story

A bastion of pure badassery

AMID EVIL can be a masterpiece if you want it to be.

The weaponry is beyond wonderful with a plethora of different murderous gadgets including but not limited to:
  • An axe which pulls enemies to you based on and completely fueled by anger* (*creative liberties applied);
  • A wand claw thing which shoots planets, including Earth sooo if it doesn't murder the enemies by exploding them it certainly murders them via Coronny;
  • An electrical trident which shoots... well, lightning-- what did you expect?

BUT, there's a catch-- there's the SOUL MODE. It empowers every weapon, including the axe, giving them even MORE POWER.

  • The axe becomes a motorboat engine (do it underwater for a surprise);
  • The planet-shooting wand claw thing shoots Suns now, no biggie;
  • The trident becomes what your mom thought it was gonna happen to you when you wanted to put your lil fingie on the electrical outlet-- yeah, that bad.

The episodes are so well designed and more importantly-- FUN to walk around and explore every nook and cranny of every map if you enjoy looking for secrets and enemy to murder-- almost every level has secrets (I'd say 99,9%) and it really is a love letter to the forgotten legends from yesteryear, days gone by like Heretic, Hexen and Strife.

Episodes like Astral Equinox and Domain of the Sentinels which are the first ones you go through are very interesting-- reminder that interesting isn't inherently a positive word. They're not bad but not necessarily good either, I'd prefer a faster episode implemented (maybe like what they're cooking now) and let us choose the fully-fledged ones later just because it kinda sucks in a game like AMID EVIL to be linear from the beginning when you see so many cool architectures in trailers and screenshots like The Forges (my absolute favourite) and Solar Solstice.

Every episode has its own set of enemies which is absolutely AMAZING! There are so many WEIRD ASS MOTHER... LMAO you get the idea, mannnnn. I was playing Solar Solstice and out of nowhere some weird ass plant lil dudes were running at me and I just shot my Star of TORMENT (my fav weapon like DAMN DUDE) they were FLYING, STUCK ON WALLS this was insane, nothing like I have ever played before, not even DOOM made me feel so happy killing strange monsters like AMID EVIL and both you spell in all caps-- maybe that's the magic behind it...
Also in Solar Solstice there's a flying stone face who spits fire who scared the sh out of me... yknow? My free advice for you, once you grab the Star of TORRRRMENT, JUST USE THE STAR OF TORMENT AND USE THE SOUL MODE. THAT'S IT-- BEST WEAPON.

For crowds it's the Aeternum, by the name you simply know it is the rarest and technically the best weapon... again, for crowds. Use the soul mode, it's mind-blowing, literally.

Anyway, moving on to the soundtrack! It does its job just how you expect it to, and I will generalize it because it does fit with the atmosphere of every single level of every episode; the tension, the enemies that sometimes just decide to jumpscare the holy f out of you-- the immersion is there, I highly recommend playing this game fully focused because it deserves all of your attention.

Now, I started this review saying it can be a masterpiece if you wanted it to be, and lemme tell you the cons, but before just a lil thing-- it feels you have to tweak a lot of stuff before you can actually play the game without issues but gameplaywise I don't have many issues, just:
  • SAVE OFTEN. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. SAVE OFTEN! The game is really not friendly with its autosave because it is a boomer shooter so do yourself a favour and save often otherwise you will be ragequitting more than you'd like to admit;
  • The font of the game can be hit or miss for some; personally I loved it, it fits the alien vibe the game has going on and I just adore it but it does feel weird and the alternative on the settings menu is generic as hell;
  • The flashing lights are the worst, playing without them shoulda been the norm from the get go; I can't do with flashing lights due to my concussion history and every time you get something in your eye the game flashes pure RED, it's bad-- gotta go on the menu to solve that too;
  • The platforming is kinda stupid, especially during The Forges... oh that part was polemic;
  • The pacing of the very last level feels just soooo out of place which I believe it IS the idea but it doesn't feel very fun to explore especially having to face a reused boss I just faced (prolly the worst one too); shoulda used a revamped boss from the beginning of the game instead like Moon Guardy boi... but the aesthetic was brilliant, kudos to that;
  • Some enemies are a tad disgusting to go against (the cultist dumbf* with the mace... whoever created that guy you can go f*ck yourself bud wish you the best tho. lmao);
  • Also some bugs, some enemies just disappear if you're going for the killing all enemies achievement or if you just wanna murder em all... sometimes you will be at 123/124 because one of them will simply decide to not show up and that's that, gotta restart unfortunately;
  • Azure Orb deserves more love.

Basically, play AMID EVIL if you love fast paced FPS, boomer shooters with a new twist because it goes way beyond that because it IS one of the most WONDERFUL experiences I have ever had in a while. It will surprise you and the settings menu can and will fix 95% of the issues you may have with the game, I guarantee it.

I am so grateful for New Blood for having the audacity to go this far with this project because it speaks to my wildest dreams; The Forges... I keep talking about it, Forges is purely industrial, mechanic and cybernetic without going cyberpunk-ish and that's why-- I just need to play it listening to Fear Factory or listening to Fulgore's theme from Killer Instinct and all is well and beautiful within.

Also there's a Horde mode too and some other new goodies... just do it, just play this game, the devs love this game so much and there's so much love poured in this that you just can feel it. I 100% it and I couldn't be more proud of myself-- I very rarely do that (laziness) and I am very glad that I have.

By the way, strafe-- strafe a lot, it will save your life more times than you can actually count; trust me.

100% do not buy this if you even *consider* turning on accessibility options in other games, it's a visual fustercluck.

I'll try to stick with it, but after the first world my frustration is really mounting about the font used by this game - it's *almost* ok that i can't read most of the messages, but i can't even make out health/mana values.

So far my eyes hurt and not knowing when to pick things up is getting really grating - sure, my eyes aren't great but they're good enough that this is the first time i've ever had this complaint about a game. Also the first boss was 100% guesswork not only for pickups but for dodging the strobe-like attacks - turned out to be better to stop trying and just do token strafing while treating it like a DPS race with soul mode.

Edit: When i realise i have to convince myself to boot it up because it's both frustrating and boring, that means it's time to uninstall instead of sticking with. Should have played this sooner after buying so i could have refunded.

I...don't like this game and I'm really surprised by that. It isn't Heretic, DOOM or even Quake-level, but more of Painkiller. Not even Serious Sam. It lacks story, character, thrill, or charm. It has a nostalgic feel to it and the graphics are pretty neat, but the gameplay isn't quite as fun as it needs to be in order to hold the game up better. The enemy variety was also not what I'd hoped. It's mostly spamming bullets, spells, magic, etc.. I didn't feel like there was enough or an effective strategy for taking out most enemies. They're just not that interesting and often very annoying. I don't want to play a really cool-looking and feeling game if it's annoying and not a fun experience.

I'm pretty let down by this and was hoping for a better time playing it. I didn't finish it, but I did finish a lot of areas for the time I played. I just don't think I can bother myself to trudge through more of it.

New Blood Interactive knows how to make a mean modern-style old-school FPS. DUSK blew me out of the water with how fantastic it was. It was to Blood/Quake as AMID EVIL is to Heretic/Hexen. Recommended in full.

Heretic was one of my, if not my favourite, truly old-school FPS games. I loved the weapons. I loved the atmosphere. it felt like an RPG in ways. So when I heard AMID EVIL was coming out, I was excited, and it delivers a lot. AMID EVIL's story and atmosphere is amazing, lots of astrology and talking about solar and lunar. The graphics took me a bit to get used to at first, but within a half hour it clicked and I felt right at home. It felt immersive, and I liked the throwback to Quake with difficulty selection.

The game itself? Fantastic. Fluid movement? Check. Useful weapons? Check (the Axe and water staff are a lot more useful than you think). Kickass music that captures the atmosphere? Check. Fun cheats? Check (even an in-game codex!). The weapons while at the core are like many FPS staples, they do just enough to distinguish themselves and feel refreshing to use. Enemy kills are satisfying and plentiful, not to mention every one of the seven episodes had unique enemies that had different strengths and weaknesses. The new soul mode in this game is integrated very well and it beefs up all of your weapons while maintaining keeping each one useful. Boss battles were epic and there are plenty in this game. The final boss especially felt intense, and I loved it.

How does it hold up to DUSK? Well actually, when I first heard about this renaissance of old-school FPS games coming back, this was the one I was most excited for simply because of my love for Heretic. While both games are fantastic, I must say I feel like I enjoyed my time with DUSK a little more. Weapons in both games are useful. Movements in both games are fluid. Atmospheres in both games are excellent. My two issues with AMID EVIL compared to DUSK are that dying was much more plentiful in this game, and a lot of deaths were due to falling off the map or instant death traps. More like old-school in that regard, but not something people enjoy today. I also found myself getting lost a lot easier in AE because the maps are huge and there's some semblance of backtracking. Needless to say though, while I was getting lost, I just couldn't help but admire the level designs and the creativity of some of these hard-to-find secrets with Andrew Hulshult's kickass soundtrack in the background.

AMID EVIL was a fantastic experience from start-to-end, even with those two very minor gripes above. I can't wait to see The Black Labyrinth expansion come out and I can't wait to see Ultrakill when it's finished. If you're on the fence of picking up AE or DUSK, I would really encourage you to save a few extra bucks and get the bundle with both games. You won't be disappointed.

Like Serious Sam but in dark fantasy setting. Lots of fun, great level design, gorgeous environments, beautiful soundtrack. The bosses are meh, except for twin terror and final boss, those are one of the most fun boss fights I had. No fall damage + fast movement = fun platforming. If you like Serious Sam, Quake and Doom games you'll love this one.

Great old school shooter that takes inspiration from Heretic and Hexen.

It is an FPS but instead of guns you use fantasy medieval weapons such as a trident that shoots lightning or a claw that shoots planets (yes, planets).

No sprinting (you always sprint) or ADS. 7 episodes with 4 levels in each. The levels can get quite long, especially at the end.
One important thing tho: the game is way too easy by default. I recommend starting on Evil difficulty right away, or at the very least Hard if you suck at FPS games.

2 bad things i can say is that the game gets quite repetitive given it's very bare bones mechanics and enemy AI (nearly all of them just mindlessly run towards you and occasionally shoot something). The boss fights are outright horrible.

Despite all of that, i still strongly recommend this game to anyone who likes FPS games.

I haven't been this happy and satisfied with a game that I've bought in a long time. Amid evil is an excellent retro FPS, it's got everything you could ever possibly want - buttery slick smooth controls and movement, unique, deadly weapons, a breathtaking visual style, a stunning soundtrack, smart, well crafted level design with creative enemy placements and usage, and fun to explore areas with loads of secrets to find. I cannot recommend it enough.

AMID EVIL is another fine gem from New Blood Interactive.

Dusk was and is New Blood's Magnum Opus in my eyes as it captures everything I liked about games like Quake and Blood but AMID EVIL is another fine shooter that I am sure you will enjoy a lot if you have played games like Hexen/Heretic. Here is a short description on what you do in AMID EVIL. 1. you kill everything standing in your way, 2. you are a wizard just like Harry Potter who can use magical weapons and spells, 3. It's DOOM but with fantasy elements and it's incredibly fast paced and brutal to play so if you liked New Blood's other games then I really recommend you try out AMID Evil. There are a bunch of cool places you travel to each with their own unique style and feel to them and as a fan of Hexen/Heretic myself I really enjoy it. AMID EVIL captures the nostalgia of 90s FPS just as well as DUSK do and I think it helps the atmosphere of this game a lot that it uses this old school 90s shooter style to it but still makes it look updated enough for a new audience. This is heretic/Hexen for a new generation of players hopefully and I hope people will give this game a chance because I really think it deserves it.

AMID EVIL is a unique FPS with a large focus on fantasy. That fantasy theme carries throughout the whole game, from the enemies, levels, and soundtrack too. This ambiance feels like it could whisk me away at any moment! The weapon selection is my favorite part though. Firearms have been traded for spells and staves, each with their own special abilities. Pretty refreshing to see I thought. It's hard not to compare to DUSK in the end, so if you're looking for something after that, I'll just say the two make a fine pair.

Amid Evil is a good action FPS in the vein of a psychedelic fantasy Serious Sam. If you go in expecting Heretic or Hexen, you're going to be disappointed. Sure, the weapons look a lot alike but this one is closer to Serious Sam. Big linear levels with enemies that mostly just run at you. It's cool that all seven episodes have unique enemies, but they all sort of behave the same way. It's colorful, mindless fun.

Amid Evil has a lot going for it. The movement is amazing, visuals are great with enough colors to cure a colorblind person. Music is atmospheric and for the most parts puts you in the right mood (even though I would like something a bit faster and more metal during intense fights). Each world is quite different from the other and each one has a boss that as well is pretty different from the rest.

Hearing all that one would assume I would rate this like an all time classic, like Heretic, Quake and Hexen. But at least in my opinion the game is betrayed by the weapons themselves. Design is great and all of them have a different look and effect. But they don't have the proper power. You shoot the super shotgun in Doom 2 and you feel like it would shatter your arms just by holding it. Shoot the rocket launcher in Duke 3D and enemies blow up into a spectacular display of guts and gore. Here no weapon feels that powerful except the equivalent of the BFG (shoots a purple orb that expands into beams killing everything instantly) and maybe the equivalent of the rocket launcher (which throws entire planets, a quite badass weapon indeed).

In my opinion the lack of oomf is because of two factors. The sound they make just isn't good enough. They sound weak even when they decapitate enemies and explode monsters into bits. There's a mace that shoots spikes, powerful enough to stick enemies onto walls, but it sounds like a salt shaker. There's a sword shooting wide beams that can cut enemies into half but it sounds mute. Second factor is that the result on the screen just isn't that impressive. Enemies barely react to your fire until they die (there are exceptions like the trident that shoots electricity that can stun lock an enemy until he explodes). I guess the makers of the game wanted a cleaner look with most enemies looking like they are made of gems and stones, but the lack of gimps, blood of any color or damage around each arena really detracts from the carnage you create.

I don't want to sound overly critical of the game, I enjoy it quite a bit so far and most people will probably not even notices the things I mentioned above. In general the game is great and I highly recommend it if you seek for a retro shooter in the footsteps of Hexen or Heretic.

I wanted to like this game. Loved Dusk and Ion Fury so this came up along the line and had to try it.

I like most of the game mechanics, enemies are mostly fun (maybe too many spongy enemies in some episodes), liked the guns. Graphics and sound design is also good here, I'm liking the atmosphere a lot.

The level design makes this so frustrating to me. Generally takes about 30 minutes to complete a level, about 10 minutes its actually doing the stuff that is fun; shooting enemies and collecting ammo etc. The rest is spent lost wandering what that button i pressed did, somewhere other side of the map, what am i supposed to be doing etc. Pressing the blue button does something. Shooting the red one does something. That's what we actually know going into this. There is no map. Usually i find elevators by standing on them unknowingly and suddenly being taken upwards or downwards. This is basic level design stuff that needed more testing and more iteration.

And the platforming... Could have mentioned that the game is actually Getting over it with Bennett Foddy 3D! The game has these endless levels with narrow pathways with enemies suddenly spawning out of nowhere. Your tactical options are to stand still and take damage, to fall down, or to run and keep spawning more enemies while doing that. You could say that I am not a fan of platforming in my 3D shooters and this game is probably the worst one at that I ever played. At least some of the episodes are like that. Others are mostly ok, where I just spend 20 minutes looking for the button or opened door that I missed.

Amid Evil is a fantasy FPS in the likes of Heretic and Hexen but you don’t switch as many levers as you do in Hexen.

Made by a developer who probably made up their name and published by New Blood, a group that’s apparently just a bunch of me’s that banded together to publish video games and thwart me in some way.

Who the fuck let you out of the bunker?

Evil has already won, and its up to you to save the realms using nothing but your axe.
Also a bunch of magic relics. I’m sorry I lied to you like that. The weapons in Amid Evil are basically the selling point, letting you play around with gear that’s sort of like its contemporary counterpart but not really.

The Staff of the Azure Ore is kind of like an SMG but it also turns fire enemies into dirt. Whispers edge is like a shotgun if the shotgun rounds hit the enemy and just kind of kept going. Voltride is like a machine gun sort of not really but it also turns enemies into damage conduits on overkills. The Celestial claw is like an RPG but makes me hard, and the Star of Torment that’s like a nail gun but better.

Also there’s Aeturnem, its like a BFG? I guess?

Each stage is cut into three levels and a boss, with each stage being a bit more difficult than the last. Or easier if you’re like me and accidentally skip the second one. While enemies have a general theme to them in the ways they fight, each stage has its own enemies that actually have a reason to be there.
You get a Codex listing them all, its pretty cool.

You know what the graphics remind me of? You ever play Quake 2? But, like, on the N64?
Like Dusk and other games New Blood force feeds me like a loving abuser, Amid Evil has a stylized retro look that doesn’t suck like other indie games because the people working on the games know what PC gaming is.

According to Steam, it took me 13.5 hours to finish Amid Evil, but I did leave it on a couple times while I fought with my night terrors and other inner demons. I was kind of burning out near the end, but if you play it in bursts, or aren’t me, you could probably avoid that entirely.

Oh, there’s also like a super powered alt-fire that you can use when you fill your soul gauge. I didn’t realize you can turn it to turn-on automatically, which is apparently the way you’re supposed to play. So I was pretty much playing on easy mode.
Woops.

Amid Evil is a good game, it goes on sale every so often if you’re on the fence about it, but I had fun for the most part.

I give it a. 8? Yeah, 8 sounds good.
Amid Evil gets an 8 out of 20.

Special Thanks to Nimbus for sending me this game. Love you, babe.

SO. GOOD.

Weapons and enemies feel great and pretty well balanced. Art style is legitimately amazing. Everything is low-poly or 2D sprites but it never looks particularly retro. Kinda a new-old school fusion kinda thing going on and I'm here for it.

Every episode is unique and has something different to offer. Some are naturally better than others. Episode 6 - no spoilers - is the crown jewel here. Not that it's light years ahead of the others per se, nor that the others arent awesome, it just feels, looks and sounds the best. The music in E6M1 should be the first thing on Andrew Hulshult's resume, despite all his other amazing work. SO. GOOD.

All in all, if you're looking for a particularly in depth story, this may not be your thing. But it's just such a good shooter. Of course it has influences from here and there, but it definitely carves out it's own path and is a very unique experience.

9/10.

Amid Evil is an amazing retro fps that captures a great deal of what made games like Quake great. All of the weapons have unique functions and only one of them is hit-scan. Enemies have no hitscan, so you can dodge everything in the game, meaning defense is active and fun. You don't have to sit behind cover waiting for your turn to shoot.

The default weapon, the axe, is one of the best melee weapons in any fps. It does real damage--it can one-shot many of the lesser enemies--and it has a small vortex ability to pull in nearby enemies. It's not overpowered, though. I still used my ranged weapons more often, overall, but I cherished every opportunity to carve through a horde of charging melee mooks.

There's not a lot of advanced movement tech. It has rocket jumping, and unless I'm missing something, that's it. The rocket jumps are pretty fun, though, and you can skip parts of levels, if that's your thing. I always have fun sequence-breaking, so this was a plus for me.

The level design is flat-out amazing. It has great vertical design, spaces that open up as you proceed, and a good mix of big, open spaces, narrow corridors, and all kinds of other environment types. Some of the levels are so novel and interesting that they will steal your focus from the enemies.

Amid Evil is very worth your time.

You know those videos of colourblind people trying on corrective glasses and being overcome with emotion at experiencing the full spectrum for the first time? Amid Evil is that experience translated into a buttery-smooth first-person shooter with some of the best level design and music on the market.

I'll be the first to criticise New Blood when they make a bad game, but so far they're doing God's Work.

It was pretty much what I expected. A good revival of some of the games I grew up with and if you played Heretic/Hexen back then or any of those old FPS, you are probably gonna enjoy this. Graphically (Despite having to play at low graphics cos potato PC) it's really nice, and it's a good mix between old school and modern.
The level design is very reminiscent and there are plenty of secrets and easter eggs to find around. Difficulty isn't THAT high so I would recommend playing it in Hard if you have some experience, since at normal difficulty it was lacking some challenge.
Talking about level design, I think it could have used less focus on platforming and precision. It's not terrible but sometimes it can be a bit tiring. It's not particularly fun to do in a first person perspective while you are trying to shoot enemies.
Mouse input could be better tho, doesn't seem to have acceleration or anything but it feels a tad floaty.
Even then, I would recommend it for that nostalgia trip, or even just for fun. It's just the good ol' formula of fast movement, hordes of enemies, and lots of secrets and pickups to find.

I'm a little bit mixed about this game, it's good, but it could have been a lot better. The gameplay is fun, the weapons are powerful (maybe even too much), the levels are nice, the graphics are gorgeous and it has a nice ambient soundtrack.

My main problem with this game is that it's not complex enough compared to the games it tries to emulate and that it's a bit too easy.
There's not enough pickup variety, you have 4 types of ammo (mana), health, souls and some powerups, which are quite rare. There are no armor pickups or an armor mechanic in the game.
Another problem with the pickups is that the game is way too generous with them even on Hard, there are mana and health pickups everywhere, you rarely go under 100 health or run out of mana to any of your weapons. This also applies for weapons, you pretty much can find the game's equivalent of the BFG right at the start of a world and it's not even hidden in a secret. In the later worlds, you'll pretty much have all of the game's weapons right in the first level.
Almost all of the weapons have some kind of special effect, like homing projectiles, projectiles slicing through enemies, a strong AOE on enemy death and even pulling enemies to melee range, and all of those weapons can be buffed with more effects for a short amount of time with Soul Mode. This is good, but the problem is, that there just aren't enough enemies and they die too easily, I barely even use Soul Mode, because there just aren't many situations where I would really need it, and when I feel like I need it, I kill everything right as I activate it.
Now there's also a hidden Evil difficulty, which I haven't tried yet, so it might be different on it.

Those are just my thoughts about it.

Do you wish Quake had remained entirely fantasy as the original design hinted at? Are you sad because Heretic 2 can't be bought anywhere because of stupid rights disputes? Did you just absolutely hate Hexen's 'puzzles'? Let Amid Evil soothe your aches and drench you in the blood of your enemies.

Amid Evil is an FPS developed by Indefatigable, a company founded by a pair of good old boys whose careers have spanned decades, from Doom mods to the Rise of the Triad remake. It was also published by New Blood Interactive, who are quickly climbing my (short) list of favourite publishers together with Devolver. In the game you take on the role of the Champion, wielder of the Axe of the Black Labyrinth, as he cleanses several worlds of the influence of a mysterious Evil Force.

Graphically speaking, the game uses Unreal Engine 4 for a bunch of fancy lighting and particles but otherwise strains to stick to a retro-styled 'early 3D' look and succeeds beautifully in this goal. The old texturework is augmented by UE4's capabilities and as a result everything looks crisp, strange yet familiar. And since we're on the technical subject, the sound design and especially music are well done, courtesy of the ubiquitous Andrew Hulshult. Sure, it might feel a little odd to look at at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

Off to gameplay. Amid Evil borrows many elements from such classics as Unreal, Quake and especially Raven Software's first real debut, Heretic. Your ranged weapons are all magical staves or other such implements, the Champion laughs menacingly when he picks up a weapon, and fortunately your melee weapon doesn't suck. When swung, the Axe has a slight magnetic effect that attracts enemies into its swings and does considerable damage, enough to make short of work of most enemies in a few swings. The ranged weapons are all quite different and use four colours of mana (ammunition) which you find scattered in levels along with health pickups and occasional powerups. Your rocket launcher equivalent is a staff that pulls random planets from space and launches them at your enemies. And on top of all this, every weapon has an alternate (and much more powerful) firing mode which it uses when you're in Soul Mode, which you don't enter by using Tomes of Power, but by collecting souls off of dead enemies and filling a bar. For just one example, the Axe will spin rapidly like a propeller in front of you. That's not how Axes should work.

With all of these weapons, you have a great many levels to use them in. Your objective is to go through several worlds with four sprawling levels each, get to the exit of each level and destroy the boss monster of every episode before returning back to the hub world. Level and enemy design is (almost) completely different for every world, with the difficulty curve of the game progressing in both ways, from fighting evil mages in ancient temples to unknowable horrors in non-Euclidean fever dreams. All of these levels, enemies and more are described succinctly in your Codex, which helps add a touch of worldbuilding and even lore (even though there are numerous spelling mistakes that couldn't help but steal my eyes, but they can be forgiven). Speaking of levels, the bosses of each episode are challenging, impressive to behold and (except for one) not gimmicky in any way, but real tests for the Champion.

In conclusion, while I would (for whatever reason) still rank it below DUSK, Amid Evil is a fine shooter, well worth your time whether you're an old guard or fresh on the scene. Doubly so if you're tired of modernity and guns and would like a bit of fantasy added to the mix.

Awesome. Very Quake/Hexen like FPS. The game has enough weapons and variety in enemies to keep things fun. Each gate has its own theme and enemies that are different from the other. Pacing is great. Always enemies to engage, enough pick-ups to keep you hanging in there, and the story is literally written on walls in the levels. So, basically, if you really need a reason to obliterate every heretic in your path you can go out of your way to get it. For everyone normal person who just wants to see things explode, don't worry about it.

P.S. The last world is legit. Gravity, platforming, feeling of oppression, and scrounging for health. Satisfying endgame.

Amid Evil is really good, but it maybe goes a bit far. Towards the end, levels become sprawling and harder to navigate. There are platforming sections that almost get bad, but not quite. The enemy spawns are good until the end when they triple in numbers. Maybe I should write this review after the nausea and frustration of the end wears off.

It's still a really good classical FPS, with some amazing visuals. Damn, that ending final episode landed awkwardly though.

Well, with the massive resurgence of oldschool shooters it was a matter of time before somebody remade Heretic.
And the result is ... I dunno... good?

Where Dusk juggles its enemies and environments to create situations, Amid Evil employs diversity. It's a very rich game. Each of the seven worlds is unique - with its own enemy variety, special platforming or environmental mechanics and artstyle. The graphics are a great combination of pseudo-low-polygonal models imitating early 2000s and modern lighting.

Enemies of each world form dangerous unique synergies, and each type of hostile is easier countered with a specific weapon. So there's some decision-making in the fights. Although, quite often, you just have to start mowing down hordes with whatever is in your possession. Plus, same enemies throughout all the three levels that comprise each world get relatively stale by the end - you no longer need to build strategies on the fly.
Bosses are very different - but... Underwhelming to my taste. Almost none of them really stuck in my mind at the end of the day - and I was playing on one of the higher difficulties. They weren't easy, really - I could die quite fast - it's just that they didn't change the rules enough to feel unique. The delightful and nailbiting exception being the boss at the end of the mages' world. I won't spoil it, but it might be the most unique bossfight I've had in an FPS - period.

And speaking of 'unique' - I just cannot ignore the wonderful trippiness in the visual and level design of the final world. What is this? Someone's bad trip turned 3D? It's awesome! Gravity bends, geometry and light screw with your brain, shadows jump out of every... corner? Can those even be called corners?

Overall: a richly colorful experience and a decent if not fantastic shooter.

What I liked:

  • Amazing level design and variety
  • Standard weapons themed and tweaked to fit perfectly with this game

What I didn’t like:

  • fighting over razor thin platforms while fighting

My Score:

A

Quick Summary

Overall the game is the classic pure action with secrets, amazing weapons, and fun enemies to fight with music to keep the energy going. Having both cool weapons that function the same as others but each have unique things about them to give each a use is great. But the real star is the levels, each of the 7 main worlds each have different enemies, a unique style and can get weird and abstract at times. There is little to not like about this game, it’s familiar yet different enough to warrant a play through.

More in depth:

  • You get the standard weapon types for the most part. A homing magic wand for the pistol, a slashing ranged sword for aoe shotgun style. An electric laser beam that can overkill and damage others. A spike throwing mace that impales enemies and is the double barrel. Then the planet throwing RPG. You have their version of a BFG, which I won’t spoil. Each weapon has an ultimate that when you have enough power makes them each become overpowered and my favorite is instead of throwing planets, you throw suns. It never got old and even the starting wand is good with this nice addition.
  • You get 7 worlds that each contain 4 episodes that each have their own enemies with most requiring a different approach to kill them and are different to guarantee you’ll never get bored. Let that sink in. You don’t fight the same enemies ever again one you’re done with that world. No other game I know has done this. Even the god father DOOM. So don’t worry about the combat. The bosses other than the first one are fun and memorable too.
  • Now my only gripe is that sometimes you will fight over an instant kill pit on thin platforms and will kill you way more than you want to. Even a few boss fights have this but they are more easily managed. Another one is even playing on the second hardest difficulty, some bosses can be cheesed if you using their version of the super shotgun when it’s amped up. You can kill them in a second, you do lose all your ammo, but that isn’t an issue with how they deal with changing worlds after each boss fight.

This is fantasy game that actually is fantasy, original and creative.
Graphics and level design is very stylistic and many times I just stopped to appreciate how well it looks.

The gameplay is diverse since every realm has its own twist, and weapons are well thought and versatile.
Important thing is to play at least at hard difficulty, if this is your genre then you should give evil difficulty a try even at first play. I started at normal and by far I was not having the fun I got at hard.

Each realm is captivating and beatiful, and especially forges and arcane expanse which looks as something strait out of Miyazaki film.

This one of the very few games I dare to call masterpiece, along with likes of painkiller and dusk.
If you want more of simmiliar take a look at apocryph.

Didn't play Hexen or Heretic, and I was worried going into this game that the style might be either too visually stimulating or not enough to look past the Quake inspirations.

I am so glad I was totally wrong.

This game is visually stunning in a way that really complements the gameplay well. The gameplay is the best part though- it's really, really, really good. The weapons all feel like they have a place, and it's a refreshing break from straight-forward point and shoot stuff. It's spoiled me and now any FPS that isn't like this or DUSK with fast paced action and brilliant use of mechanics just doesn't feel right. You've ruined me, Amid Evil, you and DUSK. And I love you for it.

After beating the game on Evil difficulty I can say that, while far from perfect, this is a very good game that keeps on giving right up until the credits. Each episode has it's own unique set of enemies you'll be going up against, capped with a boss at the end. The combat is generally well designed, with lots of enemy variety that pushes you to switch weapons often depending on the situation. A bunch of outlandish yet, on some level, familiar weapons that when powered up exhibit new properties. Overall, pretty solid.
Its got some quirks to it, such as having somewhat slippery movement and, oddly enough, the FOV supposedly effecting rocket jump efficiency. The level design is creative, albeit sometimes maybe a bit too much to the point that it doesn't compliment the game's core mechanics very well (platforming being a focus of some of the later levels for example). But overall it's a great game with solid core gameplay, a very unique art style, and overall creative design that while being hit or miss at times is definitely a breath of fresh air.
Pro tip by the way, you can completely avoid rocket jump damage if you time it well, so use that shit a lot.

Games like this are why I spend my Christmas money on indie games instead of the latest call of dooty

Pros:
-Fast and exciting combat
-Varied weapons that are fun to find and use
-Graphics give that nostalgic feeling while still looking really good
-Level design is absolutely brilliant; Environments are so much fun to explore
-Enemies are designed well; challenging to fight and overcome

Cons:
-If you don't use a guide you will miss so many secrets (doesn't bother some people, but it bothers me)
-There isn't really a story
-Core gameplay loop is somewhat repetitive: you shoot things they die. Not much else to break it up. This gets a little old later on on the game.

Overall would certainly recommend, probably on sale. It's a fun experience and it's clear that a lot of love went into making this game. Would love to see more creative ideas from this game incorporated into others!

*Edit* I just finished the game. My initial review still stands, it's def a thumbs up.

Where Ion Fury revisited the days of Duke, Amid Evil has us going back to the days of Heretic and Hexen. It's strange 'cause I never really dug into the games that inspired AE. Always felt that elemental weapons lacked punch. But man does Amid Evil dispel these notions (I mean, the Celestial Claw launches actual planets at your foes). Levels are absolutely huge and complex. The color palette bright with an oversaturated color motif. Gameplay is lightning fast and liquid smooth at 120 fps (provided you have decent hardware). The sense of weight and momentum feels incredible. Worthy of note is how varied the maps are. There's 7 episodes (4 levels each) that feel wholly unique in architecture, theme and design. Once again, a simpler throwback experience replete with modern QoL enhancements. I'm really digging the resurgence of retro shooter and can't wait to see how it evolves.

I never knew how much I needed this recent resurgence of retro-style FPS we've had. One of the stars of the revival, AMID EVIL is a fantastic and near-faultless experience. One of the very best games of 2019.

A beautiful retro shooter that is unique in the sense that its more Hexen than Doom and still amazing at it. Also it got a gun that shoots planets
