Storyline

Ein Urgestein in der Videospielgeschichte und damals noch als Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis bekannt. Es wirkt heutzutage etwas trashig, aber damals war es einfach ein Meilenstein seiner Zeit. Ein riesiges Gebiet und zahlreiche Fahrzeuge zu Land, zu Wasser und zu Luft. Und das alles vor Battlefield 1942 und dem ersten Far Cry. Die KI ist durchaus gut, aber auch teilweise unberechenbar, was das Ganze wirklich zu einer knallharten Simulation macht. Man kann einen Einsatz fünfmal spielen und er wird durch die KI immer etwas anders ablaufen. Mal gewinnt man fast ohne Verluste und dann wird wieder die komplette Einheit ausgelöscht. Etwas für Veteranen und der Urvater von ArmA 3. Absoluter Klassiker!

Die Grafik ist schlecht, aber es ist ja halt ein altes Spiel.
Die Story ist gut. Ist ein Klassiker.

What the hell is your problem people?! (Im talking about the recent negative reviews that brought this game down to mixed) Youre buying a 21 year-old game, what did you expect? AAA graphics? Call of duty gunplay? Taredown level destruction? The industry has had 21 years of time to evolve and improve since the release of this game, and you expect a game equal to todays standarts? I would even argue that Arma 1 is better than most shooters today. Can you name a game where you can actually use the numbers on the sniper scope to actually estimate distance, and they're not just there because 'random sniper scope numbers and shit go brr'? A game where you have freedom to adapt while on mission and are not stuck to a linear path telling you exactly what to do, or else unlce rockstar is gonna be sad? (looking at you Red Dead 2..). A game where you're not an effing super-soilder that can take 20 bullets to his face, and have to carefully plan out your mission, or you die in 1 bullet? Where you have the freedom of commanding your squad, and have them do bascically whatever you would need? A super robust mission editor, where i, a veteran player, am still learning new things even after 7 years of palying this game (I played on older systems beforehand, I have more than just 19 hours.)?

Also Graphics dont mean shit. 'I dOnT lIKe thE fAcEs' ugh.. I actually prefer games with 1990s - 2000s grapchis, where 'thE fAcEs' are 4 polygons, because it reminds me that grapchis arent everyting, and if a game has shit gameplay but good grapchis, then ultimatly its worth shit.. becasue If it was all about the graphics, then it wouldnt be called a 'game', but it would be called a 'graphic', for gods sake.

If you are experiencing performance isuies, Id be more supprised if you werent. Running old software that was not optimised for 16 or how many core procesors, which more and more people have these days, then there are gonna be some issues.

In short, if you are expecting a modern AAA level grapchily photoreal, hold-my-hand difficulty, compatible with modern hardware expirece, then please stop shitttting on Arma 1's legacy, and please stop expecting miracles from a two decade old peiece of software.

The father of the modern milsim genre. Very realistic and immersive, with great story and characters, however the gameplay, combat and experience is the closest you can get to the real thing. It has even been used by real military for simulations and exercises. Top notch 10/10.

I got it when it was free and even though i haven't played it that much because its too complicated for my ape brain i enjoyed losing my sanity over finding who shot me.Also this game runs on anything i tried it on my old laptop from 2007 and it run 60 fps.So if you have a trash pc and want to play a fps that needs strategy this is a really good game.

It's old, it's a bit janky, the graphics are quite dated, and you'll be shot and killed without warning or mercy.
Still got the original disks, and this is probably my fourth rodeo..

ARMA: Cold War Assault is a shooting action game with pretty solid story, cool graphics (on 2001 pretty good) but I really hate the camera movement, it's really awful not going to lie. Everything except camera movement is pretty good.

When it came out, the story was epic, graphics were epic (back in 2001), the sound and music was amazing, and the realism was a revolution for PC gaming. Years ahead of its time. Bohemia Interactive has made decent ARMA games since, but they were never quite as good, particularly the singleplayer campaigns have not been as good as in this game. Even in 2020+ this game is worth trying/playing.

I am a sucker for 1990 FPS games. This one has N64 Goldeneye gun aiming which is quite cool. Howevever, being a very old game, it is a headache to get running on Windows 10.

I got this for free as part of the 20th anniversary, pretty cool to see how far Arma has come over the years (and how far it hasn't, the AI still feels pretty similar to A3 lol). Despite it's age it's still pretty fun to play with a lot less jank than I was expecting. Sadly it only allows you to allocate 2MB of memory maximum and as you can imagine you can easily exceed that by turning up the graphics settings and crash the game so it's best to just leave the settings how they are.

One of my all time favourite games since the very first Operation Flashpoint demo came out. For me run and gun shooters since the 90's got a bit repetitive and OFP / ArmA completely changed that for the first time where many tactics could be used on a small or large scale, the first proper military sandbox sim / game and still to this day fun to play especially with mods like ECP, DXDLL and unit replacement mods, plus I've really enjoyed making changes to the base game and mods myself since the release in 2001.

Everything about its campaign, its mission editor and its multiplayer is fantastic. It provides endless amounts of enjoyment and great intense tactical combat. ARMA: Cold War Assault. What can I say about you?
You're pretty graphically dated, difficult and clunky.
But you are pretty fun, and it feels good to finally figure out who the hell shot you and give em a taste of their own medicine. The Mission Editor is great fun too, as I enjoy creating basic ideas to give myself or some friends something to do. (Maybe someday I'll even learn even more of how it works and create something even more grand!)

Overall, you're still good. Not the best, but sometimes you don't need to be.

Arma Cold War Assault AKA Operation Flashpoint defined my childhood as well as Medal of Honor allied assault. One of the best military simulators back in the day and is still fun playing the MFCTI’S and CRCTI’S. Ran the disks till they where warped.. Yes Multiplayer still works playing with friends Via radmin or some other virtual IP that will run via LAN so ignore the description where it says Single player only.

It's incredible how much of this core game has been retained in subsequent Arma games. This game is fantastic on it's own, but even more interesting as someone who played a ton of Arma 2 and 3, seeing how much and how little of the game has changed.

Operation Flashpoint, the genuine titule. Superior to Armed Assault 2, and 3. I still have original CDs of it, with the expansion Resistance, there was also an expansion focusing on the Russian side, called The Red Hammer if I recall correctly. Amazing game, even though at the release it was quite ugly, and in general visually not really appealing, it was the feeling, the climate, and stuff like that, that made it leave a mark.

Great campaign, a bit linear, but at the same time with variety of options, possibilities and outcomes that followed. Touching at times.

Resistance is my favorite, the default Operation Flashpoint was okay though, nothing special, or spectacular, but the Resistance, I still remember how the game gave you quite simple tasks to do, which later become difficult to achieve. They also added new map, with a lot of hill, pine trees.

I actually do have way more time played on this than it says on Steam, but ArmA: Cold War Assault/Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is probably one of my favourite MilSim games easily.

I hope for ArmA 4 Bohemia either continues the 2035-era line, or just remasters this game as I would love to play a modern version of this game as it is incredibly jank since its coming up on 20 years old.

Regardless, I absolutely recommend CWA as for $5USD you get tons of game, and you can patch in the Russian Campaign thats in a different version of the game by just dropping a file in a folder.

EDIT: Completed the campaign, was really fun. After the first few missions you actually start to swap different roles (soldier, tank, air force, special ops, etc) so you play a wide array of mechanics. It also has quite a few cool twists in there.

I'm a fan of retro games and I'm glad I could play this one. For a game which was originally released in 2001, the mechanics are impressive; of course, once you've got past the dated graphics (I've seen much worse). The missions are well made and lengthy with two difficulty presets available, normal (cadet) and hard (veteran). You can also tweak a load of settings in a more detailed difficulty menu (such as enabling tracers, crosshairs, etc). I personally enjoy default veteran as it allows for a slice of realism and requires you to read the map and listen to orders without guidance from floating markers.

As for the cons, I noticed two minor ones. One, if you decide not to read the mission brief correctly and YOLO it, then prepared to be softlocked. A heads up if you don't already know, games released back then didn't have many 'safety nets' when players failed to follow instructions, so expect to be locked out and forced to revert saves if you don't consider this. Two, at times you can feel restricted in favour of balancing reasons. The most annoying being the fact you cannot enter vehicles unless the narrative wants you to, even if NPCs can and nothing is logically stopping you (exact same model and everything, just no option to drive).

[✓] Impressive mechanics which still hold up for today.
[✓] Variety of roles (army, navy, air force) all of which you play in the main campaign.
[✓] Great settings allowing for customisation.
[✓] You can texture custom characters in the story creator, meaning you can go to war as Linus Tech Tips.

[☓] Don't get softlocked, listen to your commander!
[☓] Instructions can be vague, be prepared to invest more time in some missions.

Overall the game rounds up well and it's definitely comparable to the modern ArmA games feature-wise. It's simpler and more-quirky, as expected with age, yet tightly resembles the ArmA concept of a military sim. The cons are honestly not a big deal, just my personal outlook and may not even bother you. Recommend.

Apparently i am a boomer this was news to me because i got this for my birthday i'm only 28
Played for hours when i was younger and it still holds up now as a good solid sandbox shooter making missions is easy as well as lots to do as standard. Back in its day it was the best thing on the market its dated now of course but holds a place in my heart/

I mean, shooting bad guy and dying with honor is fun and all that...

You should see some of the mods for this game, it's great. I recommend the WW4 mod, as it adds loads of new gear, vehicles, maps, etc.

It's funny to think this was once the peak milsim experience. The game has aged incredibly poorly, there's not a lot of pearls here worth diving for. Still, since I must've gotten it as part of some bundle at some point, it was fun to trek down memory lane.

Sweet classic milsim shooter with a cold war themed campaign. The graphics are a bit rough, but to be honest the AI faces made me giggle with how goofy they look. Other than that it seems a solid classic shooter title.

The first entry in the ARMA series, and while I did enjoy playing this game from start to finish (campaigns and single missions) there were also some major issues which were downright infuriating.

Pros:

* Great Story setting based on the Cold War.
* Wide Variety of weapons, vehicles and factions which take a large amount of inspiration from the Cold War setting.
* Decent graphics and sound for the time but haven't aged well when compared to other entries in the ARMA series.
* The atmosphere this game generates is good considering its age and the setting its based on.
* Decent controls and AI ordering system, if a little janky.

Cons:

* This is VERY glitch and buggy, I have LITERALLY lost count how many times the game crashed or a mission objective does not trigger which when requires me to restart the whole mission from scratch or completely restart the game.

*The AI in this game is pretty terrible, specifically there aiming most of the time especially in vehicles. Additionally when commanding AI vehicle drivers is unbearable at times since there is a massive delay when you provide them with a direct movement order (WASD)

*This game has serious optimization issues with modern hardware, I couldn't set the viewing distance past 1000M since anything higher makes the in game stutter unbearably. In other ARMA titles I am using 3800M+ view distance without issues. Even with the reduced view distance I still had to deal with a unstable frame rate. Not something you want in the middle of a fire fight.

*Single Save per mission... This was something I found incredibly annoying considering how janky this game is at times

The first ARMA game I had played was ARMA 3, so this review is not based on a heavy nostalgic opinion but a first time play through.

My final thoughts are that while this game is fun to play its issues can really push the envelope of my patience levels. So will recommend it but only just.

Final Score: 75/100

Despite it's age, it's still pretty enjoyable, the Cold War era, more specifically in the 80s were always interesting, especially WW3 related songs (99 Luftballons and 1999 respectively), the games sounds are pretty weak compared to more contemporary titles, but it's fun to see how ArmA began. I would rate this a solid 7, it's ahead of its time and changed the shooter genre. But don't come here for fast explosions, you have to be big brain and look at the objectives. All in all, it's a fun game and if you played similar titles, you know what to expect.

ArmA: Cold War Assault (formerly known as Operation Flashpoint: Resistance) is a classic. It's a military simulation and first person shooter, designed to replicate with the experience of modern warfare on open battlefields. Keeping in mind that this game was originally released in 2001, it was technically extremely impressive at the time.

You can play virtually any role on the battlefield: from infantry soldier to squad commander, sabotaging enemy bases at night as part of your Spec Ops team, driving Jeeps, lorries and tanks, piloting jets and helicopters. You are not restricted to playing alongside NATO but can also fight in the Red Army or in the resistance factions. There are no maps as such, missions can be set on any of the 4 islands the game has to offer, each of them dozens of square miles/kilometres in size featuring villages, towns, mountains, forests, beaches and a road network to explore.

The core or the vanilla game is its lengthy campaign set in 1985 and depicts a direct confrontation between the US and Soviets on a fictional archipelago. The campaign is notoriously difficult, the enemy AI is very punishing and most missions give you a lot of freedom into deciding on how you aim to complete your objective. It's an extremely rewarding experience and it will gradually introduce you to all aspects of the game as you'll play through the eyes of 4 different characters.
The second campaign is a prequel set 3 years before the main events on a 40 sq mi/100 km2 island where you will play as part of the resistance. This campaign has even more depth and missions are not linear anymore as your actions can ripple through the next missions.

Graphics have aged a lot, the colour pallet feels a bit bland by today's standards (the ground seems to be a shade of green, beige or yellow) and the controls are not always intuitive (you need to use a small menu for most actions, aiming through an iron sight is achieved by pressing a key) but that's not what you will play this game.

You will play it because it paved the way for military simulations and makes you feel like you're an insignificant part of a much bigger conflict, because you can climb in any vehicle and explore the entire island if you want. Even if you are brave enough to complete both campaigns as well as all the single player missions, you will find thousands of mods, campaigns and missions online that push the boundaries of what this game can achieve. Nothing stops you from creating your own missions either thanks to the in-game editor.

ArmA: Cold War Assault is a masterpiece that offers a unique experience, it tests your patience and motivation but will reward you greatly for persevering.

Notes:
1- ArmA:CWA runs on any modern PC with no performance problem whatsoever. You can max out all graphics except for 2 parameters that I would recommend you to not touch: Visibility (set to 900) and Terrain detail (set to Normal). Pushing these values too high can make your game run extremely slow or crash (even if you have a powerful gaming PC) and the single player missions are usually not designed for high visibility which can cause some issues.
2- In 2002, Codemasters released an entire new campaign named Red Hammer, letting you play on the Soviet side. As BIS doesn't own the rights to it, it's not included. One way to install it is to find a legal copy of the expansion pack and copy the RedHammer.pbo from the CD to your campaigns folder. This campaign is very good as well and worth a try.

Definitely recommended. It's an older game by modern standards, but good balance between simple gameplay and simulation. The vast, wide-open world puts a lot of decision making in your hands-- go left, right, center, hit the enemy how you see fit. Most shooters are guided/directed play, where the player is guided on a fixed-path. Operation Flashpoint is exactly the opposite, and that's what make it such a great game to replay over and over.

Where do I begin about this game?

It's a realistic open-world military sandbox that's endlessly fun and never gets old. It runs even on a potato PC and provides an exhilarating, heart-racing combat simulation experience with two different campaigns: one in the boots of a rookie soldier who must learn to fight and survive in an unforgiving war against the Soviet menace, the other as a militia leader who must build up his forces and fight back against a vastly superior army which has taken over his homeland. The openness of each level provides endless possibility and replayability, and the level editor lets you create any scenario or battle you can imagine. It was revolutionary upon release, and remains an immensely underrated title. I do not exaggerate when I say this is the best game I have ever played, and I highly recommend you to try it out.

This was the first game on my first PC in 2000 and I fell in love with it instanly. I've had so many hours in this game back in the day, it was released and my friend and I played it for years on LAN, countless hours, millions of missions and own missions, honestly never ending fun. Great memories.It looks outdated and old now but I will never forget the joy I've felt playing this. Thank you for the memories Operation Flashpoint, you are one of the brightest stars of my childhood! <3

I've had this game for nearly 20 years. I mostly played with the editor or multiplayer. - I'm proud to say that after all these years I finally took the time re-install and beat the campaign! An absolutely amazing game!

I was impressed with realism the first time I played this game: roaming large area, hiding in the bushes and forests, military conduct, high lethality. Having an actually enjoyable experience requires a lot of investment, a lot patience but it's really rewarding. Game modability made me stick to it for years.

ArmA: Cold War Assault is designed as a realistic simulation of the modern army. You can use a large amount of different weapons, including the AK-47, the M-16, hand grenades, a LAW, RPG and more.

You can drive vehicles, such as jeeps, helicopters and tanks. You can take place on the driver's chair, or on the back with one of your teammates driving.

The game also supports internet multiplayer, wherein 2 teams have to battle each other in a large battlefield, again with the use of the vehicles, where you can annoy some real players carpooling in your helicopter by colliding with the earth.

When playing as normal soldier the game acts very realistic. You can't shoot properly when running, and when crawling you can't shoot at all. Also you walk on a very realistic speed which means it takes a lot of time to cross the landscape.

The landscape contains trees, towns, seas, roads and army camps, with everything on a very large scale. In single player you can also experience cut scenes rendered in the 3d engine. The game also contains speech and filmic music.
