Über das Spiel

Über Between Horizons

Schade

Fun game, I've had to break out a notepad and pen to do some maths and that's a very rewarding feeling. The soundtrack is good, the voice acting is good, and the art is good, so I'm quite pleased so far. At time of writing this review, I've only completed act one and am intrigued to see where the story goes from here!

Recommendable game for fans of sci-fi, mystery, and roleplaying! The story is layered and a cut above; you won't see all of it coming. The one thing that bugged the hell out of me was the lack of actual fast travel; it made traversal tedious. Otherwise, thumbs up!

Well designed puzzles that escalate in difficulty as the cases grow more complex. The game offers minimal guidance in how to solve the cases which did result in me getting stumped a few times, but I actually greatly enjoyed that. It felt truly like a detective game.
The story is also one I enjoyed. The twist at the end was not the one I was expecting which was a pleasant surprise!

I got one ending but only solved 7/10 cases fully so I'll have to try again next run!

One thing of note: The game does not allow you to manually save or load a specific save state. Your choices are final. There is no going back in one play through. So you will have to replay it fully to find out where you made the mistake. The game is a fairly short game though so I don't mind that all that much, but I understand others may.

Not good enough. Mediocre at best. Heads up. I'm getting into spoilers. Getting to the point, the presentation is decent. The sprites look nice, but lack life. There's very few animations and almost everyone has the same default stance. 3D environments look alright, but don't have much animation in the backgrounds to make them stand out. I give praise to some of the more detailed locations and colorful visuals. The soundtrack is pleasant and varied. It never got old or was annoying. Very atmospheric. The one voice actor for all of Stella's monologues did a very good job. She brings an inquisitiveness to the role that fits the personality well. Cases are fairly well designed even if there are only 10 of them and they don't take long to solve. You actually have to use your brain and live with the consequences. It's certainly more thoughtful and logical than the procedurally generated slop Shadows of Doubt uses. However, they are far removed from the complexity of Frogware's Sherlock Holmes' cases. The premise is strong if fairly generic with an intriguing mystery at its core that keeps you focused. The setting being one big interconnected ship is cool and seeing it dynamically change over the course of the very short runtime was immersive. I got complaints though, so let's dig in.

There are bugs. Not a lot, but enough to be annoying. The game froze during a cutscene at one point. Labels under pieces of evidence would randomly be incorrect for whatever reason which would throw me off completely when looking for the right piece of evidence. A few conversations with characters would not be recorded under Comms like it's supposed to. No issues with performance at least.

The UI is terrible. I'll be honest. Sorting through dozens of conversations and pieces of evidence is a pain in the ass. There's no sort feature, search bar/filter, or labels directly under pieces of evidence to quickly get what I need. The lack of a deduction board like Sherlock Holmes or Shadows of Doubt really becomes glaring when trying to piece testimonies and evidence together with specific suspects or connecting suspects together if they have some form of relationship. I guess use a notebook.

The writing is a mixed bag. It's not that it's low quality. It's that there's not enough of it. Not enough dialogue options to inquire on info or meaningful decisions to be made. There were so many moments I wanted to ask a suspect/witness about a specific character or piece of evidence only for them to have nothing to say when really they should since they're directly connected. The game isn't voice acted, so why not have more responses? Make it so that if you ask about something you should've kept to yourself, they'll lock you out of further questions. There's basically no consequence for inquiring on every piece of evidence. Also, the moral/ethical dilemma all of these games hit you with at the end felt illogical since only one decision really made any sense. I also think it's just silly you can close a case with no evidence attached. What kind of justice system is this? Even Shadows of Doubt requires evidence before closing a case.

BIG STORY SPOILERS HERE.
The final decision is dumb and poorly handled. You basically have no choice. I guess the ending reflects all your decisions made previously, but that just contradicts the game's own design elements in the most important decision of the game. Don't ask me what I want to do just to take my choice away at the end. That's deceptive. The decision also makes no sense. Who cares if the Mission is for another planet much further away when a hospitable one is much closer? This isn't even a moral dilemma. It's an ethical one. If I decide to go to a Walmart that's 10 miles away to get some toilet paper, but come across a Target 2 miles away, am I really going to be concerned about violating my initial decision? This is so pointless and anyone supporting the decision to stay the course just looks like an idiot given the rampant untreatable medical conditions popping up everywhere as well as the potential issue with rationing resources. It's blatantly bad writing. If this other planet was a question mark in the sense that we have no idea if it's actually hospitable and we're relying on unverifiable data, then yeah, there's a moral dilemma on our hands, but that's not the case. They literally have the means to terraform the planet. Even with deciding to support the decision to change course, there's no excuse for allowing a murderer to get away with killing the captain of the ship in cold blood and making her the new captain. What kind of chief of security is Stella supposed to be here? This is such a poor attempt at making democracy out to be the best thing ever and good for everyone and anyone who disagrees is an old tyrannical miserable villain.
The story lacks nuance. Its themes are handled with zero subtlety. The way it beats you over the head with its shallow message feels very amateurish.

I was with the game until it's final hours where I was baffled at how fake the final decision was. It nearly ruins the entire game. I'll certainly never replay it again. Maybe you'll get some more enjoyment out of it than me. (5/10)
