Über das Spiel

"Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive" is the first strategy game ever to combine a movie-based and story-driven atmosphere of an adventure game with the intellectual challenge of a real time tactic game.

In this western-style title, discover a game of strategy and tactics played out in exceptional real time. You're in charge of a team of 6 mercenaries and must find a way to complete your missions, be it infiltrating an enemy fortress, saving a team member or escaping an ambush... Combine the different skills of your 6 heroes to lead them to victory.
The Story
El Paso, a typical Wild West town in the southwestern United States near the Mexican border. It is the year 1881. For the last few months, the trains belonging to the famous railroad company, Twinnings & Co have been the target of a whole series of hold-ups and ambushes. The management of the company has decided enough is enough and they have to put an end to the raids. It has offered a reward of $15,000 for anyone who captures the leader of the gang responsible.

But no one in and around El Paso has the courage to take on the might of the bandidos, so the outlaws just keep on robbing train after train. Even the local Marshal is keeping well out of it.

It’s only when a stranger rides into town that things start to change. Bounty hunter John Cooper pays a visit to the local Twinnings & Co manager offering to end the railroad company’s problems once and for all. He gathers together a gang of his old partners and declares war on the bandidos. But during his pursuit, which will take him through half of the southwestern United States, Cooper soon discovers that on this mission nothing is quite what it seems...

Key Features
 • More than 20 enemies with different profiles, from the lazy and cowardly bandit, to the fearsome mercenary.
 • A team of 6 characters, each with their own very distinct characteristics, to manage in real time.

Pah!
Waschlappen!

Technisch funktioniert nun alles einwandfrei.
----------------------

This game was great at 2001, and is still as amazing. It is one of the most fun games I've ever played. I highly recommend it. Yes, the graphics are old, and some of the themes are a bit...problematic, but the dialogs are funny and sassy, the story is interesting and the group tactics are both challenging but don't require the best dexterity, but more thinking and finding the right timing.

really fun, picture rdr2 in 2001 point n click real time game you have to act fast, sometimes it feels like hitman with teh stealth kills and hiding bodies, sometimes it feels like mgs with the sneaking, tis game has alot good action once u get used to the control which arent too hard, it took me about 20 minutes to understand the basics, then the rest of the game uses those, feels liek any good modern action game when u rly get into a tense situation

As a huge fan of Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, I figured I'd go back and give this a go as it was the exact same genre of game but in an old west setting.

I deeply regret it. How is it, that each Sherrif in each town has like 75 bloody deputies? The map is INFESTED WITH WAY TOO MANY ENEMIES, a problem Shadow Tactics NEVER had.

Also most maps are linear, walled in nonsense. Sorry no you can't circle round the town, or walk through a foot high stream and try something creative, nope you have to go through the linear mainstreet that way the devs want you to.

You have to spend hours and hours and hours of boring, waiting around, trying to lure these enemies who have the eyesight, hearing and reflexes of the Terminator. It's not that it's too hard, but you are going to have to waste your life standing around studying patrol routes and it's just too boring and annoying.

I am SO glad to hear the makers of Shadow Tactics are doing the third desperados game, and that this company isn't.

Entertaining. This is a tactics game in the likes of Commandos. The graphics are old but still nice. Decent soundtrack. The story is good.

No bugs but some freezes and some crashes, really not a big deal. Runs fine on Win 7.

Well, this is a classic now. It's a good game with a lot of content. Many hours to finish it. There are several ways to approach a mission and characters with diverse abilities to help you in your quests. This game is an elaborated puzzle, basically. Unlike Commandos, solving some of the scenarios requires thinking outside the box, which is not necessarily an awesome thing. You can experience some frustration time when the abilities don't work as they should, like enemies refusing to investigate a noise or pick up something. The game breaks its own features and mechanics to create hard head-scratchers with weird solutions. In some cases, It will be both surprising and dumb to find out that you need to be a happy-trigger and not a puzzle solver. If it gets too frustrating, just look for a walkthrough.

Overall, a complex game that will keep you busy. It's fun to play, but not too casual. Rage-quit is a real possibility now and then. Nevertheless, the bad things are few, and recommend it for the good things it's easy. So get it and don't forget to play the demo mission included, it's challenging too.

Still the best in the series. The one and only.

Desperados 2 was a disappointment. Helldorado is a me-too Desperados 2.

Desperados III is good, but still can't match the gameplay, atmosphere and storyline of this original.

I've been playing this countless times ever since it was released for Windows 9x platform. And it's gun still smokes!

You can play it again and again and will have different experience each time.

Teils in 3D.

Summary

I honestly really wanted to like this game. Good westerns are hard to find, and the AI is challenging and merciless. Plus, the missions are open playstyle, allowing you to plan and execute the mission on your own terms. Unfortunately, the controls are terrible, and the real-time tactics literally combines the worst parts of strategy and action games. It felt like I was trying to play Assassins Creed on my smart watch.

I’m a completionist; I have a hard time not finishing games. Over the past 3 years and 40-ish steam games I have played and reviewed, I have voted down about a third of them…but there are only two that I did not finish and vowed never to play again. Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive is one of them.

Desperados has a number of things going for it. Good western stories are hard to find, and the cut scenes/story I did see were good. A bit cheesy perhaps, but 20 years ago writing for games usually felt like an afterthought. I could almost taste the trail dust in my mouth after the intro scene.

The AI here is cruel and vicious; no mercy. I actually like that. Kill a bandit quiet like, no problem. Fire your gun and the whole map is on you like white on rice, and they keep hunting you for several minutes. You have to think and use your skills to complete the mission…not just gank someone and wait 5 seconds for their friends to get bored searching for you.

Maps are open with LOTS of options, and your team has LOTS of skills. Meaning there is no one way to complete the mission. You get to complete the mission your way, with your plan. I love games like this…Deus Ex is in my Top 5 list for exactly this reason.

Unfortunately, I found the game controls completely unplayable. Not buggy, like other complaints. The game controls are simultaneously sluggish, extremely picky, and at times unresponsive. In addition, there is very little room for error in your movements and actions. The maps are so chalk full of bad guys you have to do everything just right. This is a terrible combination, since it actually does mean that the controls are often at fault for your mission failure…and who doesn’t really hate it when the game itself is the core reason for mission failure.

I also hate real-time tactics games like this. They are the worst combinations of strategy and action games. Lots of characters and lots of skills…that you have to meticulously control one at a time in a “pseudo-action” environment. When you are setting up your strategy, if you flub up in the action part, your done…start over. When the action heats up, you get bogged down in ridiculous strategy/tactics issues. Plus, it doesn’t allow for even the most basic action principles. For example, you can’t run and gun. You run OR gun. And if you sneak out of a house near - but behind - a bandit, the bandit will always notice you and gank your shit before you finish the animation of walking out the door. Like, really?! You’re the one with surprise on your side. These are terrible choices for any game that is trying to pump up it’s style by adding action. Throw on top of that terrible game controls, and well, let’s just say I would rather shampoo my cat.

Finally, what is a western without a few (ok lots of) shootouts. If you fire a gun, the whole map (most of the time) is alerted. Your ability to hit and do damage isn’t skill, its random…but the closer you are the higher your chance to hit and higher damage. Ok…but same for the bad guys…and since your gunshots alerted them…and you’re outnumbered 10-to-1…that means a shootout is really, really bad for your health. And what’s left once you take out the guns…a really awkward stealth game set in a desert with controls that are intentionally clunky and very hard to use.

I'm sad that it took me this long to find this game. I never even knew about it until Desperados III got the (extremely deserved) notice that it got in 2019 (my personal nomination for GotY). I'm a huge fan of tactical stealth games, but never really could find anything good outside of the first 3 Commandos games... And I'm so glad I was opened up to this franchise here. I've heard 2 and Hellderado aren't the best, but Wanted Dead or Alive is one of the best stealth games I've ever played! Sure some levels falter, but a much larger amount shine like gold, and even the ones with less luster are still masterful and enjoyable. I recommend this for anyone who is a fan of tactical stealth games. It might be a bit older, but if the old-school graphics and occasionally cheesy voice acting doesn't bother you (I quite enjoy them) and you're not turned off or even enjoy being thrown into the occasional unforgiving and punishing scenario, you'll find an absolutely stellar piece of gaming! Patience and trial-and-error is your friend with this one.

Such a classic game; never finished it back when it came out and SO happy they finally fixed it to run on modern hardware.

It's challenging and tough unlike majority of games today and remember, there's more than one way of finishing a mission. Absolutely recommended!

OK, now this release came as some serious surprise to me. See, even though title here says just “Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive”, it's actually a new, renewed (“re-modernized”) version of the game. That's right. Even though the store page claims it to be released back in 2001 and screenshots clearly show us the original old version of the game, what we have here is... some sort of remaster, really. Not one of those glorious remasters with a lot of work in them, but still, it's rather awesome. See, the original version of the game, while still being great (I'll return to it a little bit later) comes with a fair share of technical difficulties when you try to run it on modern systems. Now this version? It fixes them all. That's right, guys. This is the version of good ol' Desperados that you can play on your fancy new rig PC with Windows 10. No extra work needed. Moreover, the game offers widescreen support (both 16:9 and 16:10 are supported) now, while resolution was increased. Well, you can't have 4K here, but still, we've got ourselves something close to Full HD without any dramatic changes in visuals. Wow!

The best part of all that epicness, though, is the fact that we've got ourselves demo mission. If you're an old fan, you know what I mean. If not, well, let me explain. See, Spellbound put a lot of love into this game. And even the demo version of it was, like, a stand-alone mission. And not just any crappy mission nobody cares about. It was a pretty solid mission that took place in a pretty big town. We were supposed to fight the baddies, free the sheriff and do some other cool things. The problem is (was) – Steam never offered demo version to us, while many of the websites that had it are long dead by now. And, of course, demo had the same exact technical problems with the main game. Now, guess what? You can play demo mission in this version of the game. It's included as a free bonus and is easily accessible right from the title screen. Like, wha-a-a-at?! How cool is that?! The answer is – cool. Really cool. Really, really cool. For the first time in history we've got ourselves perfect version of the game. With an old update and demo mission included, in HD, with widescreen and Windows 10 support. Fan... bloody... tastic!

But enough about that. At least, for now. Let's talk about... you know. The game itself. Because say whatever you want, the original Desperados was and always will be my most favorite game in the entire genre. I say “genre”, but the thing is... we never had many of such games. After PYRO Studios found something absolutely brilliant in their Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Spellbound Entertainment were almost the only ones who seriously tried to follow their steps. With a couple of pretty unlucky exceptions like Plastic Reality's KOREA: Forgotten Conflict, of course, but still, Spellbound were the only ones who seriously tried to turn Commandos into a fully established genre. Nowadays, we have Mimimi Games, who made brilliant Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shōgun and even got rights for Desperados series. But back in the days? Spellbound were our guys. They were like Obi-Wan Kenobi. They were our only hope. And they sure tried. They've made Robin Hood-themed game called Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood, they've made Untouchables-theme game called Chicago 1930 (both can be found in Steam)... Heck, they even wanted to make a vampire game called Vampire Hunter (which was, unfortunately, cancelled)! All of those games had their own unique twists and were far from being basic Commandos re-skins. But the best of them all? It was, of course, Desperados.

And not only because western motif fits the genre perfectly. Not even because the game got a proper story with twists (let's not forget that Commandos was just a series of “historical” missions), while our squad members became especially interesting and instantly likeable. The best thing about Desperados is that it doesn't try to distance itself from Commandos much, while fixing pretty much everything that was wrong with it. I mean, what was the biggest problem with Commandos? I'd say, it's the fact that most of the missions were easy to finish just by standing near the corner of some building and shoot. No matter how many reinforcements Nazi had? You were still able to took 'em all. In BJ Blazkowicz way. Because YOLO. Now, in Desperados you can't do that. With a nice little touch Spellbound fixed the entire problem. How? Well, see, now your weapons overheat. So, you can't just shoot with no end. You need to think. And boy, oh boy, there's heck of a lot of tactical freedom here. Aside from a couple of situations, in which there'll be only one correct solution, this game? It's a tactical stealth paradise.

Talking about that, by the way. Let's pretend you never played Commandos before. What's the fuss is all about? First of all, if you haven't played such games before, you risk being confused at the very beginning. See, even though this game comes with some pretty cool and creative tutorials that teach you everything you need to know without being boring (seriously, this game has one of the most entertaining tutorials I've ever seen in computer games), at first you may think that this game is hard. Like... really hard. Like Demon Souls on crack hard. While in reality, it's exactly the opposite. It's a very user-friendly game. It's just... OK, let me tell you what – in this game you're supposed to die. Quite a lot too. It's just, while offering us a pretty typical RTS-like view, this game wants us to solve a number of some sort of... tactical puzzles.

Every mission here introduces you to the unique tactical problem. And while controlling a bunch of unique characters with the unique tools and abilities, you're supposed to solve them. Sure, you can shoot. But usually, even though Desperados improved over Commandos even more by adding so-called Quick Action feature (that both helps in shootouts and adds a lot to the Wild West atmosphere), shooting is rarely a solution. Just because enemies always outnumber you, while your characters die almost instantly. No, your goal is to try all sorts of silent approaches. From basic throwing knives to smart diversions. All of which are extremely creative and fun to use. You try something, you die, you try again. That's just how it works here. Sure, you can say that it's a basic trial and error and technically, it'll be true, but... that's the fun. Seriously, even though it sounds stupid, finding the weak spots in enemy defense? It's just a pure joy. Iconic green view cons from Commandos included.

In other words, even though I have a lot of love in my heart for Commandos, this is the game I always considered to be the very best. You never played such games and want to start with the best? Check this game out. Already played Mimimi's Desperados III (hint: it's pretty awesome, go buy it!) and thinking about looking back into the history? Well, thanks to this updated version, now is your chance. It's kinda sad that we can't switch to the original mint version of the game (let's just face it, we, nerds, have our screwed reasons for stuff like that), but honestly, this. This is how you do it. I mean, come on! While Kalypso Media wants us to pay $19.99 / £16.99 for a crappy, censored and half-broken remaster of Commandos 2, THQ just updated their game to the absolute perfection, didn't ask anything for it and didn't even make a fuss about it. That's how you do it. This is the way. Dixi.

If you're into this kind of tactical game (Commandos-like) and never played it, you should definitely give it a go!
I was afraid if it would work well on my modern PC (and Windows 7 x64), knowing the problems of running old games, but fortunately everything turned out fine. Gameplay was smooth, no additional patches or work-arounds needed! I experienced only 1 crash at the game's finale.
Gameplay and UI are very similar to Robin Hood: Sherwood's Legend, if you know it. You can go through most of the levels with a stealth approach, but you can also use blunt (or rather: gun) force. I like how the game forces you to learn and utilise both ways through different missions.
It aged quite well - aside from cut-scenes (these renders are really old, chunky, and dialogues are cheesy!) the stylized graphic style still looks very clear and pleasant. Of course, there are pixels everywhere, this game wasn't meant for modern resolutions, but you can treat them as a positive nostalgia factor ;)
One more thing - I know it's an old game and enemies' AI wasn't very complicated, but this game often surprised me with enemies' reactions - noticing missing comrade, omitting some traps, investigating noises in a vigilant way etc. It makes the game more enjoyable!
That's a very good game, worth its cost!

I bought Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive and Desperados 3 without ever playing the original. I loved D3 but hated playing the 1st one. It's just too clunky and obsolete. Maybe if I had played it back in the day I would of actually liked it.

Epic stealth game even in 2020! Although it is dating back to 2001 it's still a very good game, especially if you love playing slow, tactical and patientful. Of course it's no 3D neither HD but all the cartoon looks, great characters and their voices make it a lot of fun playing this game. Please bear in mind that the game controls and pixels can make it sometimes rather challenging to reach your goals. That is: saving and reloading a lot is part of the game. However, it's worth all the effort as it makes accomplishing a mission extra rewarding. In sum: highly recommendable!

With Desperados 3 out it's the perfect time to revisit the whole series.

Almost every mission takes hours of puzzling. No wonder I spent so many on this as a teenager. The genre was very popular in the 2000s with Commandos and The Legend of Sherwood being almost clones (or Desperados their clone...). I enjoyed how fleshed out the characters and missions were. The story wasn't out of this world, but it worked well enough.

Caps lock shows enemies behind 2D walls.

They promised to fix the cheats 2 years ago, but haven't thus far: https://steamcommunity.com/app/260730/discussions/0/1728701877507555330/?ctp=5#c1761356057403534279

I made my own with Cheat Engine, here's a link to my table: https://www.file-upload.com/nqwie408xqdc
It does max health, infinite doc bullets, gas, infinite Sam dynamite, etc. Pretty easy to finish the game with these. Invisibility would be easier, but it is what it is.

the game itself is good, but this re-release just strikes me as messy/lazy. mouse clips out of the window (no fullscreen on intel hd), the game either runs with very low fps and eats my cpu, or runs very high fps and eats both my cpu and gpu.
ogl 3.1 is also a bit of an overkill requirement for this game.
The game runs smoothly on Win10 and even though as old as 20 years, it is still an immersive experience. A remastered version would have been best though, but all in all is a good game even now, 20 years later. There are a few great games like this one and it is for sure a must-have if you're a fan of this genre.

an amazing game for it's age with great voice acting, characters & story
only personal con that i can think of is that there are some stereotypes that make me feel a little uncomfortable, but that's understandable since this game came out 19 years ago.
so all in all this game is at least 9/10, if not full 10/10

works just fine on Linux. It's not the developers fault that with every new windows release, MS throws down the drain backward compatibility. Now that Steam has it own Windows emulation layer for Linux, if you plan to run old games you are probably better running Linux, it's windows emulation layer is more backwards compatible than real Windows.

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive Review

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive is a real time tactic game set in a western style, it was developed by Spellbound and was published by THQ Nordic.

Gameplay

You play as John Cooper who’s a bounty hunter and gunman, he has accepted the task of tracking down an elusive train-robber for a shipping company. On this simple premise the game builds a story that might not seem that special at the first glance, but as you progress through the campaign it turns out to be surprisingly intricate. It has a tonne of twists and turns & it takes you to all parts of New Mexico through a wide variety of settings, and brings you along for the ride. To the games credit, the level design is pretty well designed, varied and much like in commandos, every level feels like it seems as if it had been plucked right out of a good movie, here you will find yourself interrupting an ill-conceived lynching, assaulting a mountain strongholds and all that other westerly stuff. Instead of the rather disconnected levels of Commandos, each and every one of the levels in Desperados is tied closely its narrative, introducing characters and their unique abilities, story points and quite a few plot twists in a way that feels both natural & logical.

With gameplay that relies on the clever use of the various skills and abilities of the various involved characters, it is good that the characters are one of the games strong points, with a cast like that which are distinct, varied and interesting. All the characters in the story have their unique story, and as they add their particular traits and abilities to the team, the difficulty (and the amount of planning you have to do) increases dramatically, and so does the fun.

More or less

With an decently functional AI, open levels and a tonne of amusing, sneaky tactics at your disposal, It is no surprise that it is being regarded as “Commandos in the wild west” but add to this a solid story line, amazing level design and a lot of interesting, diverse characters with their own story lines, and as a result you have a simply awesome experience. There are a few cons here and there – the controls can be a bit glitch and are not as responsive and easy as one would have liked in a game that is this hard, also this game being really old, it has quite a few compatibility issues . In the end though, these points are far outweighed by the amazing gameplay that is being presented to you by this game, you might curse violently upon the screen due to the toughness of the gameplay, ultimately will make you feel clever, skilled and proud – which is the finest accolade that could be give to such a game.

The Verdict

Desperados is a pretty hard game but it also provides with amazing story and interesting character arcs.

This game runs well on my modern Windows 10 computer and I got at a bargain price of 1.24 Euros. One of my top-favourite games as a child and still to this day. The game is pushing 20 years old and the graphics not very impressive by today standards, yet the graphics applied in this game is still pleasant to look at, the story is engaging and the gameplay offers many hours of great entertainment. I highly recommend this game.

I was surprised that when I ran the game last it ran optimally, which opened up the game for experiencing and in which way after doing so I really liked it. Before I couldn't manage to run it smoothly on Windows 10 but now it even has 144Hz support :)

The game is sort of exactly like Commando's but then in a Wild West setting, obviously. Plays really smooth and I really like the game engine in which the game is made because it's an isometric perspective based engine which I love because it's familiar, well thought of and is on top of that I think with a little help had proven itself to be rather sort of like futureproof at least in that way that it's perfectly playable.

On top of that I like the game because it's a real time strategy game sort of like RPG's that I was used to playing in which case the engines are once again familiar and timeless just like the aforementioned genres.

Just a straightforward review of a straightforward isometric and immersive action game that has multiple elements to be one of my favorites.

I remember receiving a demo for this game in a cereal box as a kid, my brother and I played that demo to death until our parents eventually bought us the full game for Christmas. Yes, the graphics are dated, but the gameplay still holds up today.
This is the only game in its genre I really enjoy. It has plenty of replay-ability due to there being countless ways to finish each mission.
The soundtrack is great, and always represents the situation you're in quite well.
The NPCs have so much character, and the types of enemies you fight, as well as the backdrops for each mission are constantly switched up so it doesn't get stale.
For the most part you are able to take either a stealthy approach, or go in guns blazing, provided the mission allows it. I tried to play with a little bit more stealth this time around, and though it took me longer to complete the game, I found it much more enjoyable.

24 year old me loves this game just as much as 6 year old me did. Would recommend.
