This is when Bioware was on top of their game, from the classic-tactical combat style, to the magnificent characters and writing, you can't possibly go wrong getting this game if you have the *slightest* interest in story-driven games.
Dragon Age Origins - even more so than it's sequels: 2 and Inquisition feels so alive, so special, so well-made that you just can't go wrong. If you ever wanted to play in a world that is as well built and thought out as The Lord of the Rings this is it.
For the best experience check out some QoL improvement and character creator mods as they just add to the experience without diluting it.
Again this is in my Top 3 games of all time list and I can't recommend it enough.

Although it is an amazing game, there is no easy way to purchase all of the DLC for it through Steam. At regular price the base game costs $20, with the much needed Awakening DLC costing another $10. The other 8 expansions for this game can't be purchased through steam, but rather through Bioware points. If you decide to pick those up, it'll cost another $60 out of your pocket.
Instead of paying the $90 you'd need to spend on this version, buy the EXACT SAME THING for $30 in the Ultimate Version.
Edit 6/23/2016: Another steam sale, so my review is high up again. I just want to note that the Ultimate Edition of this game is region locked, so some places will not be able to get it. The Ulitmate Version might be available on Origin, so I'd check there. If it's still unavaible, then it's okay getting this version of the game.
Edit 4/5/2018: GOG also sells the Ultimate Edition of the game, often for cheaper, so I reccomend checking there as well!
Edit 8/22/2019: On June 30th, 2016 the full price of the Awakening DLC was dropped from $20 to $10. The review above has been updated to reflect this price change, however it's still not worth buying this version over the Ultimate Edition.

Playing DA:O feels like drinking coke in a rainy tuesday. This game is good. Really good.
Do I really recommend?
Yes I do. If you are D&D fan, if you are a nerd who played tons of RPGs but still hesitant to play this one, stop waiting. Dragon Age: Origins is a good old RPG which does not only offer an immersive team combat, but it also requires strategy and tactics. This game is not about commanding your companions and slaying demons. DA:O features compelling dialogs, immersive and impressive characters and companions while slightly weaving them into the whole story's texture. Though you feel like your character is a soulless motherf*cker, you tend to feel for others and shape your character with a good dialog system. You can be a jerk, you can be a merciful douchebag or a hesitant clown. This is what we all want when we play RPGs.
The dialogs between you and your companions and the dialog between them is just a lot of fun. Of course it could have been better but having a templar and a mage in your party feels like you are walking between hillary and trump.
Unfortunately, the game design tends to disappoint you continuously. Most of the time you find yourself running around in a really weird interior map. Maybe that happened because I was just dumb.
TLDR
Dragon Age: Origins sometimes disappointed me with poor map designs. I don't remember how many times I closed the game because of feeling overwhelmed. But that is what makes it great I guess. This game requires struggle, this game offers struggle. Even though I had to convince myself, this game has soul, folks. It somehow manages to captivate you with its characters, storyline, companions and the combat system. I feel nice after giving 50 hours to this game.

I just realized that there should've been the Ultimate Edition on Steam BUT unfortunately EA locked The Ultimate Edition in my country which sucks.
BUT I WANT TO FULLY EXPERIENCE THIS GAME, WHAT SHOULD I DO??
Buy this game on GOG instead if you can't access the Ultimate Edition here. The Ultimate Edition contains around 7 or more DLC aside The Awakening.

origins is clunky as hell to play & has plenty of cringe gamer-appeal writing that feels dated in 2020 but its still a goodie. play a mage if you dont want a challenge, play a dwarf if you wanna idk, do the best origin stories .
the grey wardens are one of many solid worldbuilding notes in dragon ages setting. have fun w/ your roleplay and never, ever, ever talk to a dragon age fan online.

Good, intriguing story. Balanced role system. And battles. Battles is what made this game so unique for me. My advise - play it on nightmare – this is the most rewarding experience.
DA2 and 3 stand nowhere near this game. They are just cheap imitations compared to this gem. And don't look at my hours record - i completed a lot of playthroughs on origin.

Meanwhile, you can either buy the Ultimate Edition from GOG or Origin and transfer the DLCs to Steam folder or download from this link, https://dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Downloadable_content_(Origins) .

This game just sealed Bioware as one of my favorite Developers. The story structure has a lot of similarity to Mass Effect, which is a very good thing specially how they manage to shape the world and introduced you to it.
A satisfying journey where every player could have a different road ahead accompanied by a lot of choices that wasn't just cheap and actually matters 20 hours ahead of the campaign.
The last game I've played with this kind of mechanics are Warcraft III where's battle management is very important. I'm actually not a fan of it at the beginning until it just grown on me till the end.
I don't have a lot of experience on RPG's and its genre as a whole, but I'm very proud to call this game a Masterpiece - significantly how I played this decade behind.

+ Rich lore
+ Immersive story and world building
+ Various dialogue options
+ Dozens of ways to play the game
+ Basically playing as the hero you wish to be
+ Funny, interesting, deep companions
+ Good voice acting
Cons
- Graphics are a bit iffy especially by 2020 standards
- Combat/movement needs some getting used to at first
I'd definitely suggest you to play this game. I played other RPGs as well and my favorite was Skyrim. But compared to this, I can no longer consider Skyrim a proper fully fledged RPG game.

This is my first time playing this game and so far this is one of the best (if not the best) gaming experiences of my life. The story is awesome and I love the interactions between your crewmates.
Buy this game asap.

Gameplay-wise it's easy unless you max out the difficulty, it really feels simillar to BG with simplified controls and 3D (you still can play with a view from top if you want).
Where it shines is the story/world it did set set up for the next instalments (The direct sequel: Origins Awakening, Dragon Age 2 and finally Inquisition), the game is full of choices that matter up to the very end of the game (if you shat on games because of moral ambiguity that's not for you). The lore is deep and i'd like to compare it with The Elder Scrolls but mind that the latter started way before with Arena in 1994 while this Dragon Age started in 2009 (almost two decades later) but let's face it: Dragon age started strong and kept going better and better, i'm really curious to see what's next...
The only complain i'd like to make directly about the game is the fact that the addons have to be earned by playing which makes them unavailable from the get go unlike the PS3 version.
And regarding to the implementation on steam: Why aren't there achievements ? You could have put the ones ALREADY IN THE GAME via the Dragon Age servers or the same ones as PS3 version...
With all that, i can't consider the steam version as full (still you have to already know about the addons and could download them on wikia but shit...)

The writing and the story, the pacing, the diverse settings, the choices you can make, the consequences, the companions, your relationship with them and the way they change and evolve over time, their banter, their reactions to your love interest, the tactical combat, the way you can customize what and how your companions use abilities, the voice actors, the soundtrack, even the graphics have aged well and still hold up in 2020.
If you like RPGs, then you MUST play this game. Get the Ultimate Edition, it's worth every penny.

My first playthrough was not longer after the game was released. I didn't have a Steam account back then (probably didn't even know of Steam =). I remember that before DAO, my favourite had been Neverwinter Nights 2 (still love it but not coming back =).
I lost count of how many times I've replayed DA Origins since then, returning to Thedas again and again, playing different characters, making different decisions. The first DA is one of those rare games which are like good books—you make it to the end only to feel that you want to start anew. (I had a similar feeling when read the Witcher (the game's good, there's no denying that, but the books are perfect). Surely, I have read all the DA comic books and some of the novels as well. There're not many things I am passionate about, but DA is one such thing.
For those who've never played the first DA game, I strongly recommend it. You may be taken aback by the looks of the game (let's face it, it has been more than 10 years), but even so, the game is still good, featuring a great storyline, charismatic and easy-to-believe characters, interesting lore, and a nice combat system.
I want to believe in BioWare and hope they'll bring back some of the DAO spirit to the fourth game.
PS: Today, I will finally destroy the Archdemon once and for all (again) and be done with the game (for the time being).

Turns out this game was a pleasant surprise.
The combat was so clunky and annoying at first, so the only thing that kept me hooked was the story. I would suggest to turn down the difficulty to the lowest to enjoy it at first. Get the hang of the gameplay and then turn up the difficulty later.
The story is very interesting and gave me somewhat of a Witcher 3 vibe from it.
TL;DR Absolutely try it!
