Jobsystem.

Deshalb:

Vielen Dank für diese bewusstseinserweiternde Erfahrung

Vielleicht sollte ich es jetzt doch empfehlen

My favorite FF. Vastly underrated, and while the story is a bit cringe, it has by far the best combat system of all the FFs (anything before Ch. 11 is a meme) and a few memorable characters (Fang especially).

Another great story in the Final Fantasy franchise, but the story must be emphasized, as the rest is mediocre.

The combat is based on basically mashing the attack button and changing formation, even once you throw pounds your attacks are automatically configured to be effective... it's all too automatic.

Exploration is linear and this time, unlike other Final Fantasy the end-game is after the final Boss necessarily!

I loved the story and that's why I recommend it, but you can pass without looking at the screen almost, the mechanics are really weak that also leaves in the background one of the hallmarks of the franchise, the summons and limits.

Story: 8/10
General: 5/10

P.S: The port at this time is great.

• Not as bad as people make it out the be, but still pretty freakin bad.

• Having played nearly all the Final Fantasy games, I came into this one with low expectations and an open-mind. Still ended up disliking it the longer I played.

• PROS: Fun combat (gets extremely repetitive though), gorgeous visuals, high production quality, (most) character designs, and an outstanding musical score.

• CONS: Only to be overshadowed by horrible scene/scenario writing, character development, and overall creative direction. Walking straight and fighting gets old quickly. When the world opens up, it's too little too late. Speaking on the games linearity, if you're going to take away an open-world option for the players to deliver a well-paced, tightly-woven story, then that story better deliver. Unfortunately, it's linear AND the story disappoints. So...huh?

• This Motomu Toriyama (game director) is....something else.

• Glad I played through it once for a full Final Fantasy series completion. Will probably never play again though.

I played this game as a kid and hated everything about it. Flash forward to my 20s, my friends told me to 'give it another chance, because it's a hidden gem and a masterpiece in writing'. I'll be honest man, I'm not even sure where to start. I just hate everything about it. Lightning is abusive and violent, Snow is one-dimensional, the kid who's name I can't remember is boring... the only character I liked was Sazh, but even he grinded on me a bit; his dialogue just wasn't very good, although his overall character was good.

HALLWAYS! HALLWAYS! AHHHH MORE HALLWAYS! Oh hey an open world are- NOPE IT'S OPTIONAL, HAVE SOME MORE HALLWAYS! Oh hey a skill tre- THE SKILL TREE IS ALSO A HALLWAY, THERE IS NO GOD!

One of the best stories in it's franchise with a mediocre battle system and truly awful overworld design. The soundtrack and beautiful cutscenes that accompany your adventure with great characters make up for that though.

Play through Final Fantasy 13 at least once. You will have a decent time!

A highly criticised game when it came out, many years passed and I've decided to play it again.
When it lunched i think it was way to early for this game to be comprehend by the public, the sublime graphics, fabulous story, excellent voice acting.
The deepness of this game very few understood before it was criticised.

Don't let my steam hours played fool you, as I played through all of ff13 on my xbox 360 and decided to purchase the PC version so I have a copy that I will be able to keep forever.

I might be one of the outliers, but I personally think ff13 is in the top 3 favorite final fantasy titles, along with final fantasy 10 and 7. I don't quite understand some people dislike for the game, maybe it's the shift to a more fast pace strategy game in comparison to previous titles where you could take some time to plan out your moves. However, I personally like the game's tempo as it isn't too fast that you can't plan put your plays, but is fast enough to still keep you on your toes. Again, idk why there was a dislike for ff13 and I would give the game a 10/10 (as I would do the same for ff10 and ff7, though I might give ff7 a 11/10). The game is worth playing in my opinion and I personally think it is better than even the newer released ff15.

Walk through long corridors. Watch long cutscenes. Walk through long corridors. Battle. Repeat everything. That's pretty much it. The story was interesting in the beginning but it feels too much dragged as the game goes through. The good side is that characters are interesting and this game has a easy mode for beginners (like me) at this type of battle.

The story line is good just not great if compared to Final Fantasy VIII or Final Fantasy IX, or Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy XV. The battle system using ATB gauge is also a good improvement from the early classic turn-based combat in older titles of FF (though I prefer the free action movement battle like in Final Fantasy XV). Music and CG, as always, r great. Something that you can expect from AAA company like SE that very famous with its CG.
Overall, I give 8/10 for this game.

The game is pretty good but the PC port sucks ass. Even if you fix the framerate, prerendered videos and cutscene audio with mods, it'll still crash consistently on several places (which made me lose progress many times, given that you can't save anywhere). It's definitely playable but i'd recommend playing it on ps3 or xbox one/series through bc.

Was I happy with the result? Also yes.

I honestly felt very relieved when I got both this and XIII-2 to work under a patch, and the overall experience was great/ There were occasional bug-outs which caused the game to crash, but there were very few and between.

It's a bit of a grind, but I like this game a lot. The characters are pretty interesting once you get over a few annoying traits that surface once and a while and the story is engaging enough that I want to push forward to see what's going to happen next. The combat system is fun too. I like being able to change role sets for my characters and let them play within that role versus just spamming a random attack button endlessly. All things considered, this is my favorite FF game to date. I liked this title enough so that I bought the other FF13.2 and FF13.3 iterations to play once I finish this game.

Cannot recommend this game while it remains unplayable in full-screen and external fixes, especially when this is advertised about this game.

Steam Version needs a patch by Square Enix.

Edit after completion of the story/main game:
Still would not recommend due to the above, false advertising unless you fix a glaring issue yourselves Square-Enix.

Despite this a great game, beautiful graphics even for an older game, mods available to help the issues. Battle system is not turn based, it is real time with an auto-battle feature, as well as menu options and the classic ATB guage. Still plenty for me to do post-story, content wise good JRPG. FIX THIS VERSION if you're going to advertise the full screen capabilities, and performance.

I've been playing my way through all the core FF games and this is the first one I wouldn't recommend! It just has so many issues! The first that come to mind (if not the worst): the lack of audio options, the camera angles on chocobo's are infuriating, the plot is somehow very confusing and very predictable, and ultimately I found I had no investment of connection to the story or characters. If I wasn't playing them all, I would have serious doubts that I would actually finish the game. I did like the paradigm system, it was reminiscent of dressspheres from FFX-2 (which I also liked), but the auto-battle ends up being a double edge sword. I just use the auto-selections for all but the most dire of battles and ends up being too uninvolved and loses my attention. Anyway, I'd give it pass unless you're doing a run like I am, but don't say I didn't warn you!

As much hate as this game got, it actually holds up pretty well as an RPG all these years later.
Yes it is imperfect, and yes the tutorial section goes on a bit too long. But the character arcs are worthwhile, the combat engaging and the game looks and sounds quite nice.

Blinded by light from Dissidia Duodecim brought me here and I’m glad it did.

Final Fantasy XIII…..Finally, my 2nd FF series that I actually finish. Back when the game first came out, it was a port disaster and it still is, with the random FPS drop here and there. But I decided to press on and kept on playing and during my playthrough, I stumble upon a fan patch that fixed the performance issue. That changes the experience of my playthrough and made the game a lot more enjoyable.

The Pros

  • Top notch cutscene animation as expected of SE
  • Story is a bit complicated but will make a lot more sense as you progress
  • Very active combat mechanics
  • Game is on the tough side, going to need trial and error
  • Sazh and his antics
  • Blinded by light

What got me hooked to this game is obviously the soundtrack since that’s what brought me here in the first place. But if had to take that out of the equation then It’ll be combat mechanics it’s a bit different from the usual turn-based combat that FF series used to offer (I’ve only played I, IV, and Crisis Core). The game forces you to be a lot more active and switch between stances in order to survive the fight, brute-forcing your way through and going all out from the get-go won’t get you far in the game cause some bosses have a ridiculous amount of HP.

During most of your playthrough, the game would feel like a hallway until you reach Gran pulse on ch.11, after that you can say goodbye to those very linear maps and hello huge open-world map. Pro-tip, try clearing Cieth stone 14 before anything else, would make traveling a whole easier and make small Gil on the side at least while you’re still on Gran pulse. The thing that I like the most about this map is the changing weather effect and for some mobs instead of staying put, they roam around the map making the environment feel more alive.

The last few things that charmed me were the character development and story. Those two are well executed and delivered in a way it kept me hooked for hours during each session. The story can be a bit confusing at first since you’re suddenly thrown in a huge skirmish with little to no info on what’s going on but, as I’ve said before, as you kept playing everything will make a lot more sense.

The Cons

Aside from the lousy port which you can fix with the patch, I didn’t experience any game-breaking bugs or random crashes during my playthrough. But the one thing that I didn’t enjoy as much was doing the side quests….the game really loves making you go from one end of the map to the other….I mean the Cieth Stone locations are spread out everywhere and I mean everywhere….I wouldn’t be able to finish (or at least would take a lot more time to clear) those if I didn’t unlock Chocobo first…god bless Chocobo.

Verdict

So, did I enjoy the game? most definitely! Big kudos to the fan patch for fixing the port and made my playthrough a lot more enjoyable. After playing through the game, I can understand why it’s either a hit or miss for some people but do give it a try, since it might grow on you. This is one of those games that starts a bit slow and gets better later on. All in all, if you enjoy JRPG’s I can confidently say this would make a fine addition to your library. I highly recommend it

When this game came out it got a lot a criticism for being too linear, to streamlined etc. Now, with every other game being a giant open world its a nice change of pace. The graphics are great to and look better than a lot of games with far more polygons.

This game is difficult for me to 100% recommend, but I want to start by saying it's far, far better than the years of negative reception that has plagued the game since its release ever suggested. I avoided it since launch because I always had heard it was just an irredeemably bad game. A few things I want to highlight that I often heard as horrible, game destroying issues that actually aren't that bad:

- The game is a hallway simulator. Yes, the game has a very linear approach to progression, though the later game isn't as strictly the case. That said, it's never a complaint I see for the beloved FFX, a game with the same fundamental linear progression and limited open areas. If linearity isn't your bag, I get it, but as someone that has played many JRPGs from the most traditional to most modern, I didn't find this to degrade the experience, especially with beautiful environments making up the hallways you travel.

- The lore is supposedly all locked in the menu option referred to as the Data Log. This is not entirely true. A huge chunk of the Data Log is just rehashing cut scenes, story progression, and character details the game organically provides in the storytelling, as well as the bestiary. The one thing that is hard locked in the Data Log is location lore, but that's more a consequence of the game design that doesn't allow you to organically learn world information like you often do in other JRPGs. I promise the Data Log isn't hours of required reading though, and by the last few chapters, I was largely ignoring it.

- The characters are supposedly love them or hate them, no in between. This is of course by far going to be the most subjective positive or negative, but I personally took no great issue with any given character and actually enjoyed the character arcs.

- The story is supposedly too complicated, but calling back once again to the beloved FFX, I found nothing difficult to understand about the story in this game except some of the naming that the game will make sure you know quite well early on anyways.

It was refreshing to find that all these supposed horrible, game destroying flaws were nothing but subjective opinions. That isn't to say the game is free of things to criticize, and so I'll note my personal grievances below:

- This game went through development hell and multiple directors, and you can tell as you play through the game. Without getting too specific, I will say Chapter 11 to the end almost feels like a completely different game, and that isn't necessarily a good thing even if introduced elements are otherwise a step up. Lack of consistency in game design is the biggest issue this game suffers.

- The battle system is actually pretty solid, but it takes several chapters before you start really seeing the depth, while also seeing the flaws especially of the auto battle system and not being able to directly control more than your leader character and the class composition of your team during battle. You also don't get to control your party composition freely until the end of Chapter 9.

- The enemies are a mixed bag, and its clear not everyone working on this game entirely understood what they were doing with enemy design in relation to it. Especially the late game enemies will require very specific class compositions to stand a chance, and even then, there can be a horrible amount of luck involved.

- Boss battles are by and large great, but there's one specific type of more puzzle type battle that is just not good. There's only a handful of them in the game, but they don't feel fun in the slightest. If you play the game, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about by the end of Chapter 2 (though that one isn't as bad as the rest).

Keeping those negatives in mind, I will say I adored the game through Chapter 9, thought Chapter 10 was decent, nearly quit the game regularly from Chapter 11 to the end. The one thing this game really has going for it was that I found the story compelling, and I've heard the direct sequel really helps to clean up a lot of the flaws in this title, some things for better, some maybe for a bit worse depending on what you want. You have some minor nitpicks like the battle camera sometimes being a chore, the first paradigm shift in any battle being a recipe for disaster if mistimed, but nothing as major the main criticisms I outlined above.

If this game was still $60, I wouldn't recommend it. At $16, you don't have much to lose, and you get a game that holds up very well graphically with one hell of a good soundtrack. If you go in knowing the true negatives to be wary of, you likely won't end up as down as I did when the game transitions into different director visions, and it sounds like the trilogy gets things together going forward, so I'd say give it a go and maybe you'll find a new favorite FF game.

Final Fantasy 13 is a Solid FF title. This game has absolutely astonishingly beautiful graphics, fantastically stylized character design, an interesting dynamic for how your teams work depending on how you format your combat team, the ability to hotswap between classes as a group (which is great and very unique to this game) and some very amazing visuals, and the score is fantastic. This title has some of the best music in the franchise.

This FF title is great in a lot of regards, its sole weakpoint is its story and how the first half of the game is bottle-necked. The first half or so of the game is very slow, and very much a series of corridors between you and the open world part of the game, which is in the last quarter of the game. It takes a long while to get through the first portion of the game and how straight line it can feel at times, but once you hit the open world and can fully travel around and such, the game gets MUCH better.

All around, Not the strongest FF title, but not a terrible one. I would definitely say to give it a try if you are an FF fan, and have gotten through most of the other games and want a new one with unique features to try out and experience.

Back in the year 2011, my mom took me to the game store where I could choose one and only one new game. I narrowed my choice down to this and Skyrim. Guess which one I picked! I DARE YOU TO GUESS WHICH ONE!!!

I honestly can't tell if I can recommend this game or not. I put it down years ago at the 20 hour mark and put it down again at the same spot years later. I finally put in the effort to beat the game after putting just under 60 hours into a save. I probably could have beaten the game faster too, but I got too into the side quests and item collecting.

I enjoyed my time playing, but it just takes so long to reach the point where the game opens up and the fun begins.

I beat the game. That's all the matters to me right now. After ten years, I can finally say I saw the ending to the game I picked over Skyrim.

In the middle of my Tales of Arise playthrough (great game), I randomly installed this and was a little blown away. For all of the negativity that was lobbed at this game - it holds up really well 10+ years later. The graphics are still good and you can play in 4K. Great cinematics, great music, combat is fun once it gets going, yeah it's linear but it's almost like a big movie with some combat thrown in. I can certainly understand the gripes people had when this came out with higher expectations of an open-world. But, this is Final Fantasy after-all, they take risks. These days you can buy this cheap and go into it without expectations and get blown away by what is here - a solid, polished turn-based RPG with fantastic CGI cinematics. You'll probably have more fun with this than most games that have been put out in 2020 & 2021.

Owners of the game needed to deal with a broken port for years, Square-Enix releases a new port for the game...but it's exclusive for the Microsoft Store.
Thumb down for you, Square, bring the updated build on Steam since Virtuous worked on the Steam version just to provide a better build to another store.

FINAL FANTASY XIII is one of the games people either love or hate, without a middle ground, mostly because of some of the design decisions introduced in this title. Personally, this game got me hooked from the very beginning. The story might be confusing at the start, but if you are catching up with datalog, it’s actually very interesting. Characters are great as well - every single playable character is different, and in the second part of the game, you can shape your party in any way you want to, with the team members you prefer.

Gameplay-wise, the majority of FF XIII is extremely linear, and this is the biggest problem for most of the players. It might sound strange, but I kinda enjoyed it. We’re living in an age with a huge amount of “open worlds”, or games that are giving us free hands, and it was actually something different, refreshing. I could fully focus on the story, characters, and the world of FF XIII, which is beautiful, because even today, after so many years, this game looks great. It’s also worth mentioning that the second part of the game, after reaching Gran Pulse, is more open. You can freely explore some areas, do side missions, or even ride chocobos!

The second piece related to the gameplay, which is dividing the community, is Crystarium - progress system introduced in FF XIII, which is somehow based on what was proposed in FF 10. You are developing your characters first in three, and later on, in six different roles, expanding their Crystarium by unlocking new skills, and improving parameters like strength or HP. If you are interested in only beating the game, you won’t need to grind CP - you can naturally progress with the story, and if you are not spending points in a weird way, you’ll be good. Other than that, I can say that the only downside of Crystarium is the fact that you’ll spend a few hours there. Upgrading all characters is time-consuming, and you are forced to do this because the maximum amount of stored CP is limited.

Switching to cool things, the battle system introduced in FF XIII is one of the best in the franchise. Encounters are very dynamic - in most of the fights, you’ll be forced to switch paradigms in order to change skills used by all party members. It’s also very satisfying, especially during boss fights, when you need to be really good in adjusting paradigms, using skill, etc. in order to beat the most difficult opponents.

As in almost every entry of the franchise, if you’re interested in having 100% in FF XIII, you need to be mentally ready for the grind. You’ll grind plenty of items that are sold for Gil (it’s not given after encounters), catalysts, etc. This part of the game will take you around 30h after beating the story. Personally, it took me 94h to fully complete this game.

Important note: Square Enix is known for its bad PC ports. Before playing the game, it’s strongly advised to read some guides on how to improve the performance and stability of the game. It worked like a charm for me - FF XIII was running absolutely great, and I had no crashes.

To summarize this review, in my humble opinion this is one of the best Final Fantasy entries in the franchise. If you can accept their design decisions about linearity and the infamous Crystarium, you’ll enjoy this game a lot. It has a great story, amazing characters, a captivating battle system, and visually it’s simply stunning, even today.

This isn't a game, it's a horrible movie where you get to choose the equipment the characters use during battle. 25% of the game is cutscenes (literally), and about 50% is battles that are primarily auto-battle where all you do is confirm over and over the same input and the AI decides what attacks to use. The remaining 25% of the game is walking forward on a map that doesn't even offer you a chance to explore, and half the time it's one-way only so you don't even go backwards to previous sections. It's not worth playing - just watch the 9 hour YouTube video that compiles all the cutscenes and FMVs if you want to experience the story - there's nothing to explore in the game, so everything is covered in the cutscenes.

i really loved this game. the characters are fun, and it was nice to see how they developed. this game focuses less on physical problems but rather morality as well as the consequences of actions, which made it nice to see how human the reactions of certain characters were. the soundtrack is also really really good. that being said, this game is not perfect; certain parts of the game can feel stretched out/grindy, the sync between dub and the lips moving doesnt fit, the story is confusing at first, and the dialogue can be cheesy. one of my favorite parts of the game was the designs of the characters, bosses, and enemies in general. if you are fine with linearity in games, enjoy the writing over gameplay, and want something to devote time to, then i recommend final fantasy xiii. dont listen to the hate and play the game for yourself to form an opinion.

This is by no means a bad game per se, but simply does not live up to the Final Fantasy name. This fact is well reflected both here and in metacritic ratings as being by far the least popular mainline FF game.

Pros:
Gorgeous graphics - Playing at 4k, I definitely found myself just staring at the screen from time to time
Excellent music - One of the better soundtracks of recent FF games, even if it can't live up to some of the classics
Combat system - The paradigm system is quite unique and takes some getting used to, but I found it quite fun and engrossing

Cons:
Combat system - There's a somewhat steep learning curve, and the game designers decided to handle this by making the first 20 hours of gameplay a tutorial. *facepalm*
Uninspiring story - The story isn't bad, but falls far short of what is expected for a Final Fantasy game. It doesn't help that the story is half buried in the datalog.
Bland characters - Their personalities range from bland to cringe-worthy. It's a shame because the character designs are awesome, especially Lightning
Buggy - I got a lot of random crashes at 4k, and the enemy datalog entries are bugged above 720p (see https://steamcommunity.com/app/292120/discussions/1/606068060836189580/). I usually don't like to harp on technical issues, but for a game where shininess is the major appeal this is a big problem.

A lot of reviews will mention linearity as a problem. Linearity by itself isn't an issue; FFX is quite linear and is one of my favorites. The problem is that the linearity in this game is very poorly disguised and there's none of the expected payoffs in terms of character or story.

Hands down my favorite out of all the numbered titles in the series. If you think the game is too linear, just keep in mind that PSICOM is a military group, ShinRa is an electric company. Comparing walking around the slums isn't the same as being on the run when everyone on the planet knows your face.

It's linear, but on purpose. Graphics are ahead of its time for 2009 and are still top notch to this day.

Postgame feels like an afterthought, but the core game is excellent. Would recommend to new and old players of the FF series.

Overall, I liked the game. Gameplay felt like FFX and FFXII had a baby, and it was fun. The story was good and I cared about the characters.
However, there are some things I'd have to complain about, such as the fact that the game essentially plays itself for you. Everything is automatically set up and you can just sit there, beating enemies by spamming a single button. The Paradigm system is interesting, but it didn't feel like Final Fantasy to me. Also, the fact that I had unlimited MP, was instantly healed after every battle, and couldn't control my party members save for their roles are some of my complaints. It made the game feel a bit too simple and easy, but again, not my least favorite Final Fantasy. 8/10

There's a reason why recent steam reviews rank this game very positively, it's just like Sonic Unleashed, the game was hated at launch but later on people realised it was actually a good game.
I read online reviews of the game saying it was too linear for them and I was making a gamble whether I'd hate this or love this, and I loved it.
It doesn't feel like a hallway simulator (except from chapters 3 and 4 which are pretty much the only things i dislike about this game, minus the difficulty spike in Gran Pulse) and there is an open world area at chapter 11. The graphics are stunning for a 2009 game, even at the lowest possible settings. Just be wary of performance; if you want a consistent 60fps you'd need atleast one of the best gtx 1000 cards or any gtx 2000 series card, but even on a gtx 970 the 30fps is not an issue when you have these amazing graphics. The battle system is probably one of the best variations of the ATB system used in most FF games and it makes you feel like you're truly involved without having to wait for your turn while still catering to turn based fans.

actually there is one thing I do hate, Vanille's constant moaning. I can't play this game around my parents.

I have been loving this game for the most part, But i cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone on steam. This port is absolutely horrendous. It crashes during several cutscenes and even just during combat itself. The amount of work each individual has to put in to make this game work just isn't worth it when 20 hours down the line it starts to crash again but you've already done everything you can to fix it. I will most likely be buying this game on PS3 and playing it on there, and I recommend everyone else to as well. Do not buy the steam copy, save yourself the headache.

I'll say it: Thirteen (or something) year old Starfish was a hater. The game is actually really good; it is actually just a better version of FF X. People seem to think the story is trash, but the simple story between Snow, Hope, and Lightning is great in my opinion, how does a little kid who thinks his de-facto new guardian just killed his mom act on his emotions? The other character stories and interactions are also pretty good, but Hope takes the cake. The rest of the main story is pretty standard for FF despite the anti-crystalism bender SE was on at the time.

The linearity that people talk about is no worse than FF X and is also simply a by-product of SE wanting to tell a very specific story. The story they want to tell necessitates them splitting the party for almost 70% of the main story, and with a split party comes boss fights that have to be killable with specific combinations and therefore the linear nature of the crystarium (sphere grid/license board equivalent). I don't think this is bad though, I had a lot of fun with all of the content even before the party reunited just learning and using the battle system. The post game mark missions (FFXII styled bounties) also have some great battles that really force you to turn the gears of the battle system.

One unfortunate thing about the battle system however is the distillation of the traditional jobs into six rather pathetic shadows: Commando, Ravager, Synergist, Saboteur, Sentinel, and Medic. Each role does EXACTLY one kind of thing so that the AI can efficiently handle the class changing and operation of two AI in the paradigm shift system. I think the system was very fun to use and worked great, but the lack of traditional job identity is disappointing regardless.

The game has great gameplay and story, I can't not recommend it. Hope's character story seems to be the object of incredible disdain in common critiques of the game. I simply have no idea how, but I guess it just goes to show how experimental this game is for a Final Fantasy game. If you are hesitant about picking it up for $16, wait until it goes on sale for $10 like it frequently does.

PS: I remembered how godlike the ost is after I went to listen to the Black Disc that the game's battle themes virtually forced me to buy. The bgm is top notch, on the tier of Shadow Hearts, SMT, and so on. I also initially forgot to mention that this was ported when SE still had that awful bug where the game constantly stutters looking for a controller if one isn't plugged in. So either use a controller, leave one plugged in while you use keyboard and mouse, or fix it with the mods available.

When it comes to mainline entries, this was the one where I thought Square may have gotten carried away. Since the game was done without Hironobu Sakaguchi overseeing it (he dropped out during 12's production), it remained to be see if the game would keep Square going. And it somehow did, to where it produced a trilogy of games (outdoing what 10 did with 10-2, and Tactics with its spinoffs). But how is the game?

To put it simply, it's a game that is perhaps the most linear out of the Final Fantasy titles out there. Its battle system is dynamic, and you will be fighting a myriad of enemies who have various weaknesses or strategies needed to conquer them. The addition of an 'Auto-Battle' option is more 'take the game's recommendations for actions in combat rather than decide your own'. But more often than not, this option lets you cheese fights to a point.

How is the leveling? Well, you cannot grind in this game until near the end of the game. And even then, the game has a system in place to prevent cheaters from doing so. The system used to build up character stats/roles WILL hit a wall at some point and require you to endure the story until the next tier unlocks. This is a big change from prior Final Fantasy series because you could grind to max level anywhere you wished, learned magic and skills with enough time/effort, and you could cheese the game from then on. And if you wanted to cheat, you could use a trainer or a cheat engine to make that possible. But not in this game. You can get so many stats/skills/magic until you have to continue story mode. And the game will DEFINITELY push you to keep as much as possible.

As for the story, I strongly recommend that you don't take any breaks. The reason why is because the story, and the characters, make it real difficult for you to follow if you don't play this game straight through. If you play it for a few hours, come back to it weeks or months later, you'll probably have a hard time recalling anything significant. The characters are a mixed cast but do get better.

Graphically, it looks great. And you do have the options of adjusting AA, resolution, and shadow detail to alleviate some pressure on your video card.

Music is also a wonderful listen.

While it isn't a bad Final Fantasy, it is mixed. I definitely recommend getting it during a sale (which happens a couple times a year easily and you can nab this for a few buck).

Sometimes coming back to a game years later can give you a new perspective. I gotta think it must be tough keeping a long running series fresh for old fans and exciting for new fans threading a fine needle. FF-13 at it's core isn't a bad game in fact I think it's a good game with a new battle system that threw many off is it a perfect game no by far but the sum of its positive and negative's add up to a great Final Fantasy game. The corridor nature turned many off and its restrictive leveling and party building is another notch in its negative camp however if you can look past that there is a beautiful story of strife and remorse, hope and friendship that's why I'm giving Final Fantasy XIII a thumbs up for JRPG and Final Fantasy fans who might have skipped over it or those who are curious all these years later.

Did this game back then on 360 ; had hundred of hours on it.
At first the game seemed pretty boring, didn't liked the fact i can't do whatev i want and run around in the world map, until i reached pulse, the game let you way much more do what you want.

I still don't like Snow and Lightning in this opus (they are way better in the two others in my opinion), but always happy to redo this story.
- I sometimes have some fps drops there and there but nothing too much ; Some mods are pretty good too.

Gave it a try again after writing it off a decade ago.
- First 20 hours are bearable when you know what you're in for. The characters grow subtle but some are
much more fleshed out than others. Sazh is easily the best character in the game.
- Open Gran Pulse area is pretty cool but I at it's core it's completely barebones, it only gets a pass because
it's unlike the rest of the game.
- The endgame after that is literally the same boss over and over again with a different model, if getting attacked non stop and being unable to outheal it whilst putting up with random 1 shot moves thrown in whilst tackling overly bloated HP enemies with upgraded weapons and gear sounds like fun, pick it up.

Gameplay wise, mostly endgame, this game has to be Square at it's lowest.

If you played it on PS3 when it released and didn't care much for it, then you're like me. I gave it another shot, and I'm glad I did. It's aged really well, and I think it's easier now to appreciate it for what it is. Yeah, it's a departure from FF formula, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's unique.

Being one of the most critical discussed games within the Final Fantasy franchise I belong to the fraction who enjoys the 13 trillogy. Is it a good game? Yes definietly but sure not for everyones taste. The score is just insanely good and the gameplay is really intuitive. Sure the game is really linear but that issue gets resolved during 13-2 and LR, at least to some degree. And ofc the visuals, considering the game originaly came out 2009 the visuals are really stunning. ne of my issues I had though with the pc version is that the change between cutscene and gameplay framerate was kinda irritating for me.

Now the other question, is it a good Final Fantasy game? Thats imo up to debate but I understand people who say it isn't. If you only ever played 13 the pacing is awful and half the cast is forgettable and annoying. Taking all three games into perspective I actually think though it is a welll told story.

Overall just taking 13 now into account it prolly is like 7/10 for me~

It's definitely not for everyone, and this port basically requires you to seek out a fanmade .ini file to make it function.
However, this game contains what I consider to be a very fulfilling variation on traditional Final Fantasy ATB battles, removing focus from the minute details and expecting the player to make overarching strategic choices.
Only consider playing through this game if you're very, very patient.

I've platinumed this game on Xbox 360 back when it came out and I intend to platinum the PC version eventually as well. I absolutely love the combat and the paradigm design of this game and I love the versatility of most of the characters in combat after accessing Gran Pulse. The amount of min/maxing you can do is fantastic for an elitist like me and honestly if you like min/maxing and reaching incredible numbers as well as going for ridiculously hard trophies/achievements this game is for you. On top of being a fantastic Final Fantasy game that is (Thank you Square Enix). This is my favorite of the trilogy and it will always hold a special place in my heart as Lightning's character progression is truly beautiful in 13-1. I just wish the game didn't receive such backlash for Lightning having a similar personality to Cloud. I highly recommend this game it's pretty good and Square Enix cutscenes are always a treat.

A huge improvement over FF XII. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this game - more for the story than the fighting mechanics. Plenty of interesting characters, a coherent story, and gorgeously inventive environments. Pretty sure I eventually turned on CheatEngine or in-game assists (or both) to power through the story.

We all have our favorite Final Fantasy game and this is mine. Combat is fast, has depth, and requires you to mess around with weapons and accessories. The game plays out on a very strict path but because of the story it makes sense as to why it does that. Some characters are a bit annoying at first but each of them has their story fleshed out by the end. I love this game and I try and play it once every year to remind myself about the important stuff tackled in this game.

There is a lot of hate surrounding Final Fantasy XIII but I honestly enjoyed it quite a bit. The most common complaints about the game is its linearity, but you get to explore quite a bit of open world once you get to the latter half of the game. For a game that came out in 2009, the game is extremely gorgeous and beautifully rendered. The combat leans towards being strategic rather than action since you can't manually control your character's movement, but it is fun in its own way. Also being a Final Fantasy title the music definitely did not disappoint.

My only gripe with the game is probably that the characters' personalities felt very weak and that it had a rather confusing story flow.

Overall, very decent game and would recommend. 7/10

Many people love or hate this game, the truth is that this is a good game, just not a good Final Fantasy. Nevertheless, I am recommending this game to JRPG fans, just don't expect that much.

Pros
+ Nice story;
+ Gorgeous graphics even to this day.

Cons
- Another lazy port by Square, nothing game breaking though;
- Worst ATB combat system I've ever seen;
- Auto-Battle, yes;
- Linear maps with straight corridors 99% of the time;
- You'll get full health after every battle;
- The game only gives you access to the Levelling System at Chapter 3, all monsters killed before that were for nothing;
- Shifting Paradigms take a couple of seconds and you need to do this a lot every battle;
- Besides, monsters don't drop Gil;
- You'll only be able to upgrade your gear near the end game or even at the post game;
- The game has a Bestiary for you to complete, but it never tells you there's no New Game Plus and once you've beaten a Chapter you'll never be able to return to that map again;

You will dump 2 or 3 hours at a time for many different days, all to keep having game breaking re-occuring problems. Steam wouldnt refund even though the 14 hours i have accumulated are basically the first 1 to 3 hours until the game is completely broken. I tried 13 fix , moving d3d9.dll all the misc files to try and move to FFXIIIMG.exe , all the things, and the game always locks up , then freezes, then goes BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR and i have to control alt delete , log off windows . It will not even let you quit with alt f-4 , ending task. This game is truly a nightmare in the sense of trying to climb a ladder made of pure warm butter.... and you only have 10,000 feet to climb. #ThisGuyIsntReal #playonps3

This is actually a good Final Fantasy game. It's just different. This game received a lot of hate at release and probably still gets it primarily for not being a conventional JRPG. It was mostly linear but that changes at around 70% of the game. I believe that developers wanted to give a different narrative so that's why they decided to keep majority part of the game linear.

Battle system received criticism because people didn't liked the idea of auto battle but I think that this game focus in battle was on entirely different thing. It focused on paradigms (kind of job system) and required player to have ideal set of paradigms to fight the enemy. And besides the battle animations are really beautiful.

Now the story is one of the attribute of the game which I didn't liked at all when I played the game first time. It felt to me that the story wasn't personal enough or wasn't dramatic enough. This time I replayed it and realised that the story is not bad actually. I was comparing its story initially with FF X in which everything was told to us on the spot but in XIII there is some lore related to God and Fal'cies which we have learn ourselves. This lore is named as 'Fabula Nova Crystallis'. And it isn't just clearly told to players probably on purpose. I read online that it is explained in its sequels, as I haven't played them yet.

Overall this is quite decent and enjoyable game. I plan to complete the whole trilogy to understand the overarching story of the lore.

I can't believe I haven't write a review for this game, lol. Look this game gameplay is weird cause they didn't let the monster drop gil and the only way to get gil is by defeating monster and hoping they would drop item that you can sell, and that's one of the many reasons why I got 68.8 hours on record, probably will play it until it hit 69, lol. But despite all of that, I love this game and the trilogy with all of my heart and I want Lightning to punch me in the face

I had previously owned this game and wanted to replay it on steam but, this game is clearly not optimized for PC. The game is arguably one of the worst FF games but, I personally like this game. The reason I am giving a bad review is purely for the reason that this game is unplayable depending on your gpu. It is very picky and specific. It has frame rate issues and crashes in the middle of combat making it impossible to progress. Their are fixes online but, none of them worked for me. Honestly if you plan on buying the game make sure you don't have an amd gpu and even then it still might not work. This is really sad and I hope it gets fixed but it probably won't. Get a 360 and buy a copy of the game if you want to play this. Really disappointed.

Tedious. Masochistic. Well done square, I guess.

Visuals are great, the characters are good, the story is cool. The combat is ridiculous. No combat should take over 5 minutes (sometimes 10) of repetition, what kind of assholes made this game?

Here's the thing, it's linear, meaning your not wasting dozens of hours of your actual life traversing a meaningless 'open world' because it's a thing. Cool, actually. Thank you. However, this game is basically a bunch of battles that are actually puzzles, that you at some point have to actually solve; it's stupid, srsly. Otherwise the game is pretty good.

Tedium, lots and lots of tedium. I don't recommend it but I will because the battles (which suck) actually feel like a precursor to FF XIV which is absolutely and without question; Awesome.

Although this game has shortcomings in plot and gameplay, it is far from being unenjoyable. The characters are interesting and charming (well, not at first maybe, but later in the game for sure lol), the worlds - although linear - are beautiful and different. I won't lie that there are things about the game that detract from enjoying it: a datalog containing most of the missing context of the plot that the cutscenes fail to convey, no overdrives and Summons/Eidolons that you pretty much will never use because they do not get the job done, no leveling up but instead a grid-like FFX leveling system, and yes, the linear map with only ONE area that you get to peruse in an open-world fashion while being unable to visit previous locations making every treasure there missable.

But its strong points? The soundtrack, the graphics, the voice acting, and yes, the gameplay. FFXIII introduced a new mechanic to the battle system: paradigms. You basically set up your party with the roles you want each character to be, make different set ups, and switch them during battle. It brings a new challenge - a strategic one, that forces you to learn how the monsters you fight respond, teach the AI how to fight the battles, and switch things up to end the battle as quickly as possible. Some people might not like that, but it's honestly one of the more interesting aspects to this game. Considering how most of the side-quests involve getting a five-star rating on each battle, it's definitely important!

But it's not for everyone. Don't get me started on the sequels. Don't worry about the sequels, just focus on the first game of the installment and enjoy it as best you can :)

Just finished it! Wow, what an amazing game. Yes, it's linear, but I liked that. It was relaxing to play in bed on my laptop, not having to read a guide to make sure I didn't miss anything important. Every day I'd be excited to just keep playing. There's lots of FF staples that are missing - no safe towns, no overland map, etc - but if you see FFXIII as just a game, and not pre-load all your Final Fanasy expectations on it, then you'll like it.

I played FFX-2 right before this and there's a lot of gameplay similarities - being able to jump between height levels, a full-action combat system and switching between roles. But I hated FFX-2, but everything was much more fleshed out in this. The PC controls are different to FFX and FFXII, and took a little getting used to, but they aren't bad.

The story is very much tied into the game, and there are a LOT of cutscenes. Enjoy them, they are beautiful. Read the datalog whenever you get new information - I think they put some key info there to not slow the game down for those who didn't care, but I find it's important when you don't know anything about the setting yet.

Give the game a shot. It's a beautiful, fun, piece of art.

My first FF back in 2010 on Xbox despite already being 18, it's a great game with a phenomenal soundtrack. The combat system is a unique blend of real-time and turn-based showing the evolution of the FF series and the story is engaging enough. Many people may complain about the single pathed aspect of the first 60% of the game, but I still enjoy it all (and I concede that nostalgia plays a factor in it).

Don't expect the best 10/10 experience, but you'll still enjoy your time if you like FF/JRPGs.

I have a love-hate relationship with this game, and after several years, I finally feel I've come to terms with what it is, and while it's deeply, profoundly flawed, I can't help but recommend people temper their expectations and try it.

I initially played it on PS3, and like many I was annoyed with the removal of towns, the linearity and corridor environments. Years later, I understand that there's a coherent vision behind that controversial design. It wasn't 'gutted because of Xbox DVDs' as some claimed (these people clearly never played Lost Odyssey), it was designed that way. In a game where you play as fugitives, of course you won't be able to kick back in a town. Of course your whole world will feel like you can only push onwards into the claustrophobia. I get it. I know what they're doing now. But it's still not that fun, and it's only made more frustrating by FF13's constant grinding tutorialisation and pacing issues, and plot points that fade in and out of focus, and lack of variety in gameplay loop and sidequests, and the railroaded character progression, and and and...the problems go on and on.

But if you approach it knowing it's linear, knowing it's got issues, and pick it up at its low price, it really can be a rollercoaster. The game looks phenomenal on PCs at 1080p and above, like a constant wallpaper generator. After a PC replay, I decided to skip postgame content, the game's lustre had worn off for me, but it's become a cheap interesting curio worth picking up on sale, and it paved the way for XIII-2 which I enjoyed a lot more.

Final Fantasy XIII is probably the only game that I both hate and love playing.

Biggest issue with the 1st half of the game is that the gameplay suffers a lot due to the storytelling. While I don't mind the story, it's still mind-boggling that throughout the majority of the 1st half, you only get to control 2 party members at a time, which seriously gimps the combat experience. Even though I did not grind and just played normally, the game still took way too long to convey its story. Quite a few chapters take forever to finish due to how many enemies you have to fight. Since you still don't have a full party for many of these chapters, the time you spend in combat is also massively lengthened.

While the game does open up at chapter 11( which is after 20 hours of gameplay), you shouldn't expect a drastically different experience. You still go down linear hallways one after another. However, this is the point where the game finally lets you fully utilize the combat system.

You get access to pretty much all kinds of spells and abilities from this chapter forward. Most importantly though, you can finally control a full 3-member party with no restriction set on you. The flow of the combat once you have access to everything feels very fast and satisfying. You pretty much press X nonstop while also think on the fly on how to approach a combat encounter efficiently. It's surprisingly heavy on the macromanaging aspect instead of the micromanaging that you would expect in a typical JRPG. It encourages you to think ahead on what you need to do when you encounter all the different kinds of enemies. The implementation of the Active Time Battle system in this game is well crafted and probably the most refined of all Final Fantasy games.

It's still kinda hard to recommend. Its ups are very high but it can also be quite a mind-numbing slog. You should only get this game if you're going to commit about 40 hours to it.

I started FFXIII in 2020 with no prior knowledge of the entry, FF as a series, or the hate that is often linked with XIII

FFXIII was next in my list of games after a playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles and Octopath Traveler, two of my now favourite games of all time. Xenoblade has my favourite story of all time, while Octopath has one of the best battle systems in my opinion.
So you can imagine the massive jolt it must have been to walk from two amazing titles, widely accepted to be masterpieces of gaming, to FFXIII, one of the most divisive and controversial games released on PS3.
See the thing is, I had no idea the game was so hated. I just picked it because it was cheaper than XV, and not an MMO like XIV, so it seemed like a logical place to start in 2020. I had no clue of FF as a franchise, but hey, the graphics looked nice in the trailer…

So as you can imagine, I trotted off the beautifully disguised precipice, hurtling unwittingly into the world of pain known as FFXIII.
At least, that’s how it should have been according to half of the vocal anti-fans of this entry. Like I said, I began the game believing it to be a ‘good’ game, and with no prior knowledge of FF as a whole, I feel that I did so with as open a mind as possible.
It is an undeniable fact though that FFXIII is flawed in many areas, perhaps more than should be forgiven for a game with it’s budget. It does a massive dis-service to itself in the first 15hrs of gameplay, cornobbling the player with it’s most intolerable aspects, making sure to stir up as much hate as possible before it even begins to shine. This initial portion of the game requires almost no skill, and due to the decision to make the game extremely linier with no real NPC interaction or side-content, it feels more like an interactive movie with a single instruction: “Press ‘A’”
The single thing that saved me from giving in to the temptation to unknowingly side with half the FF fanbase in slapping the title of ‘series scapegoat’ on FFXIII, was that I *wanted* to like the game.

So, blind as I was to the massive cloud of impending doom looming over me, I pushed on, and eventually once the game began to feel like an *actual* game, I grew to quite enjoy it.

I found FFXIII refreshingly different from other JRPGs as of 2020 for one simple reason; It is not uncommon to have massive open worlds and heaps of fatigue-inducing side content in current releases, and the linearity of this game actually kept me interested. You don’t have to think about where to go, what to do or what order to do things in. You can just collapse in your comfy chair, unplug your brain and just chill with the game. Nothing is too easy, nothing is too hard, it’s just chill + fancy graphics. Until about the 49% mark when you meet a certain Boss…

BAM!!!!!

The game completely spazzes out, forgetting everything it has led you to believe. Life has been too easy! Now you will be spread across the floor like butter on a hot crumpet. If you have been button mashing instead of playing intelligently up until this point, its-a-gonna-be-a-hell… and it only gets more hardcore.

I truly believe the single biggest flaw of this title is this massive contortion that occurs.

Had the game started off this way perhaps it would have fared better and possibly kept much of the audience from the boredom of the introduction. This sudden jolt in difficulty now only serves to divide players even more as frustration easily sets in. How do I inflict a Break? You never taught me! (Well yes we did, we just forced you to play 20hrs after the tutorial without ever actually needing to use it)

It’s like they designed the whole game with the intention of division.

So that’s it, this is not a deep-dive into the Lore and cast of FFXIII, or the intricacies of the battle-system, but rather my overall impression of the game.

Do you sense that I am confused with my feelings?
That’s because I truly am. I really enjoyed the game, but it clearly has MAJOR issues.

This game is a mess and this is the main Final fantasy(and XV)that the series went downhill(except FF14)

Pros
+It looks nice for a ps3 game, especially the cut scenes
+some very nice songs/music
+fully voice acted with Japanese dub as an option. The voice acting in general is quite good.
+ok duration/length
+swapping character roles/classes(medic,sentinel etc) on an instant during battles.
+60fps

Cons
-story isnt presented well at all. There is some interesting lore, but the way the game presents it is so confusing. Unsatisfying ending too.
-characters arent as memorable as in other Final Fantasy games
-linear with the worst pacing in the whole series. You walk a fiew steps, cutscene. You walk a fiew steps again, another cutscene.Basically you keep getting short cut scenes every fiew minutes.
-boss battles arent memorable at all
-crystarium is a bad option for increasing characters stats. Boring and repetitive, especially for increasing other characters.
-side quests/missions are badly designed.
-the combat at first is interesting but gets very repetitive from the start. I never liked the stagger mechanic and wished the summons(eidolons)were better implemented in the game
-no limit breaks
-no armor like in previous FF games. You just equip a weapon and some accessories(like rings/talismans)
-Many re used enemies with different colours.
-not the best performance.

As a fan of the series this is one of the worst for me. Its a game mostly focused on newcomers of the series,at least the way its designed.

5-6/10

Good story and characters. Fun fighting mechanics. Requires a bit of grind but that's to be expected in a final fantasy game.

The most divisive in the recent string of Final Fantasy games, this one is good but not great. The story is somewhat odd, since the first 30 hours of gameplay feel like an extended tutorial with the last big area providing the necessary depth and the full party experience that the game needs to succeed. Characters range from unbearable to somewhat decent, with some exceptionally odd interactions between them from time to time.

Final Fantasy 13 was the first Final Fantasy that i played and finish ,for many this title is the black sheep of the franchise because the combat system is very simple and the gameplay is very linear, but I personally loved the game and it was this game that made me love the Final fantasy series , I personally love the characters and the story, I agree is not one of the best titles in the franchise but it is a very good game and o already finished it 3 times.

Looks realy nice for a game from 2009 with a lot of visual stunning cutscenes.

The battle system is really bad, feels like a grinding eatern mmorpg from 2004.
I would recommend to play on easy mode and enjoy the story.

It's very linear for most of the game and the story can be a bit confusing at times, but the gameplay is great and the story is rewarding if you're willing to invest the time into reading the in-game datalogs.

Overall it's something i would recommend and enjoyed playing through multiple times.

The plot is extremely linear, it's a corridor: Here is the beginning, there is the end. Let's hold UP button and run in a straight line. The game opens up a bit for very short while really later in the game but that's it.

Playing the game made me feel like a hostage more than anything else, and I just had this feeling that I need to finish it ASAP and move on. I won't this to myself ever again.

The story is a cringe soap opera with full on drama-scenes. The battle system doesn't make sense, why the game is over when the leader dies if there are 5 other characters on your team who can easily revive him/her? If you want to develop your characters, hey farm points and just press X to get stronger. There is no world-map and no freedom to move around. The scenario and dialogs feel like they were written by a 5 years old. The bestiary was another problem for me, the pallet swapped colours with different stats is just lazy..

For me, it's really subpar to any other FF title, sadly.

This is an incredibly divisive game in the Final Fantasy series and for good reason.

World design feels like you're walking down the same corridor over, and over, and over again. Some Final Fantasy games may be known for their linearity but FFXIII reeks of this. The world apparently doesn't open up until the penultimate chapter but at almost 10 hours and six chapters in, I don't have the will to continue playing.

There is very little strategy present in the game's combat system. Even in boss battles, where bosses can generally kill you quickly unless you have the right party members in the right roles. It's not even like you can grind your character to outlevel and breeze through boss fights either because you're level capped for much of the game.

The story doesn't even make up for this either. None of the characters in the story are remotely likeable and that mostly comes down to how dysfunctional the rag-tag group of adventurers are and how for the most part, they either hate each other or see each other as burdens. I originally thought I was going to hate Vanille the most for how squeaky and childish she was, but ironically she's the voice of reason and the most mature character in the entire series...

When a happy-go-lucky and naive teen girl is the most relatable character in your JRPG, maybe it's a sign that Square Enix should have gone back to the drawing board instead of planning a whole trilogy around these characters....

Final Fantasy 13 is often seen as a low point in the series for valid reasons, although that doesn't at all make this game bad, as the reviews don't do this game justice what so ever. FF 13 changed alot from previous games in the series, implementing a new battle system and different level design along with many small changes.

The gameplay in FF 13 is very divisive with FF fans, as it opts for a more cinematic, real time approach which some fans disliked and others enjoyed. FF 13 also features a lot of third person exploration through its mostly linear environments, although the game does have huge open areas later on. The gameplay is fairly challenging at times, but very visually pleasing. Overall the gameplay can get pretty boring and tedious, though the player is often able to avoid encounters making the game more interesting.

FF 13's story is also a very debated area of this game, as many people disliked the game's more lighthearted, corny tone while other players could forgive this due to the games interesting cast of characters. Although characters like Snow and Hope can be very annoying and unlikable when compared the the rest of the cast, its more than forgivable as their personalities and place in the story are nessasary for the characters' chemistry to work in an interesting way. The story mainly focusses on themes of oppresion, forgiveness, loss, and teamwork. Although this could have been very cliche, the game develops these themes through a very interesting narrative, differentiating the story from anything else. Overall i enjoyed the story and look forward to seeing where it goes in the sequels.

FF 13's Graphics are very impressive even after all these years after its release, with extremely impressive levels of detail, specifically on characters. This game really shines however in its custscenes, as the visuals are simply breath taking, with fantastic cinematography, stellar voice acting, and decent dialogue. Sadly, games proformance is where the experience is lacking, as the game is extremely unstable and make even require patches to get running.

Overall, if you can get past FF 13's terrible optimisation, you will be rewarded with a great story and visually impressive, if repetative gameplay. Overall I recommend you buy this game as a whole, but for some would recommend you simply watch all cutscenes on youtube and move on to 13-2 and lightning returns, as the gameplay becomes extremely tiresome later on.

Final Fantasy XIII is the single most divisive game in the main series often finding itself near the bottom of worst/best lists, despite this FF13 has avid fans and frankly there is good reason for that.

The story, while confusing to start with, is still solid and has some great character development by the end. You can get easily get attached to the cast, and for me personally Sazh is one of my favourite Final Fantasy characters period.

The battle system is amongst the best in the entire franchise, you'd be forgiven for missing this at first glance. It's systems are fine-tuned and well balanced, with a enough complexity to keep interest. Don't be fooled by the auto-battle command, switching paradigms is the core of this system, as are the 6 roles (3 to start) that each character has access to. Effective use of the equipment levelling and upgrading system is also essential for reaching 5 star battle results in the Fal'Cie stone missions (especially Vercingetorix).

As for the common complaints:
Yes the game is linear (which is only true if you want to completely ignore Gran Pulse) but other games in the franchise are also linear (AY, 10, very easy to argue others as well) and the linearity is by no means a valid criticism of the title.

If you're still complaining about the performance in 2020 you either can't read (the thousand messages telling you to use FF13Fix) or your computer is from 2001.

Game is good y'all.

One of the best Final Fantasy Games. I like how it's not just hit and go, it needs people who are more calm and put in the best strategy, however, enemies are not waiting for you to think like most old final fantasy games, which is more exciting.

This would be my 3rd time buying FFXIII and also my 3rd time giving the game a 2nd chance. 60fps makes this experience the best one yet. I can't believe this game was made a decade ago. It looks better than even FF7 Remake at times. Maybe I'll beat the game this time around and give a fair review. But so far, it's kind of fun (Most titled FF games aren't fun battlewise until later, it is a JRPG) but way better to look at. Cutscenes and some dialogue are painful but hey, gotta cut corners somewhere right?

Grab it when it's on sale for around $7, it's definitely worth $7.

Played this game a million times on the xbox 360 already, and bought it on steam just because this is my favorite game of all time. I always have a hard time finishing games, but I haven't had any issues finishing this one multiple times, or the follow ups XIII-2 and Lightning Returns.

I know this game is seen as one of the worst Final Fantasy games, and I fail to see why. The story, if paying close attention to the smaller details as well, is amazing and I absolutely love it. It's brilliant and not cliche like most JRPGs. It does have it's usual predictable things, but some things were surprising and I loved each and every character and their development along the way.

I'm probably too biased to see anything bad about this title, but that doesn't happen very often for me. Guess that says something too ;)

Only downside about this PC port is that the controls are not very easy to get used to, and I ended up using my xbox controller to play. Also, having a 4k screen, don't expect high end quality gameplay, it doesn't go higher than 1080p sadly.

The story is a mess and the gameplay design has some serious question marks, but with that being said...

The game is no where near as bad as people make it out to be, and has a certain charm and quirkiness to it that kept me going. If your're interested in this game I'd highly recommend you pick it up (like i did).

P.S. Hope was one of my favourite characters, why do people sh*t on him so much? His character development was phenomenal, he starts off as this awkward lil kid who has a hard time expressing himself and turns into a pillar who keeps the group going.

The game is cool...but this is the Lazyest port i have ever seen.

----The Good----
-It's XIII...
-Fun as an Turn Based RPG
-Graphics are still beautiful
----The Bad----
-Capped FPS
-Almost no graphical settings
-Why the hell the game is so dark?
-No Brightness nor Audio settings for some reason...

Final Score: get it on console version/10

Final Fantasy XIII actually still holds up really, really well (I played it through multiple times way back in the day on console). it's beautiful and honestly still looks better than a lot of modern AAA games on max settings. I also prefer the battle system on show here, it is fun and fluid- prefer it more than the combat in XV. Areas can be a little restricted but is nowhere near as bad as some people seem to say.

My only gripe? young Hope- who is quite possibly, the single most annoying FF character ever written (he isn't anywhere near as bad in XIII-2), but yeah- Every moment he is on screen in XIII I want to punch him in his whiny face.

Game minus Hope 8/10
Game with Hope in any scene 2/10

+ Really fun combat system. I loved it!

- As for the story... it's almost as if the game designers just sold me some cheese. There are so many holes in the plot that I am still a little confused as to what was happening (and why). I did read all of the datalogs, but I still have so many unanswered questions.

- The main antagonist 'Barthandelus' is quite possibly the worst villain I have ever seen. His design is just....so....bad. I was so underwhelmed that I nearly just stopped playing the game.

I would say that if you are looking for something kind of mindless to play after a long day at work. This would be a good fit. Anything more, save your money for something else!

This review is for people who are considering playing this game for their first time. FF XIII is one of those games that gets a lot more hate than it deserves. It is a pretty good JRPG, that has a lot of disgruntled fans mostly from people who didn't finish the game, don't enjoy 3d era FFs and largely had betrayed expectations from a marketing campaign from 15 years ago from game trailers that set unrealistic expectations for this game.

There are a lot of reviews that explain what FF XIII got wrong, but very few that cover why many people enjoy it any way. FF XIII is a JRPG and not an RPG. The difference between the two is that JRPGs are played more for narrative and largely tell the player a story. Traditional RPGs places a player in setting and places a secondary important on story. This distinction is important for understanding what FF XIII is, as this game is mainly about narrative. The best criticism I've ever read is that this is a game that forgot its a video game and not an anime. This criticism is also one of the reason many people enjoy the game, because video games are a different medium from anime and FF XIII tells a story that is easy to get invested in and one that avoids streo typical JRPG tropes like the story about : harry pottter who is on a magical journey to defeat the evel demon king bowser-palpatine ; or the one about two warring states in which the hero must find the 7 dragon balls to stop the villains from using nuclear weapons.

FF XIII is a story largely about a cast of flawed characters who through a series of unfortunate circumstances are cursed by the gods and asked to destroy their world. These characters each start with separate goals and mostly dislike one another. The story is one where characters come to term with themselves, one another and over come their trials. This is a character story and by the end of the game you are more invested in the characters than many other JRPGs I've played. While the story is by no means a master peace, a story about god turning his back on the world and the cast saying F*** you is pretty easy to get behind.

This story is told with amazing visuals (this is a PS3 game that looks better than most PS4 games), a great sound track and what many consider to be FF's best battle system (once you get passed the first 10 hours of the game). So if you are someone who plays JRPG for story content, buy this game and sit back and enjoy the ride. Don't worry about the technical requirements in 2020. I have a Ryzen 1600 with an RX470 (100$ GPU these days) , my computer runs it on max settings 1080P at 60FPS.
