Spielmechanik, Grafik, Setting TOP

Also last euch nicht für blöd verkaufen.

I love how the combat system runs - faster, more brutal and more fluid. Also the numerous possibilities that you have to switch off an excess of enemies in seconds. The game is a lot of fun, graphics, combat system, upgrade weapons, change appearance. What I would have wished for would be a world map system like at XCOM, where random events happen, I decide which missions I accept and which decisions I make to influence the course of the game. It only plays linearly and you play through acts through the respective number of missions. Still, the fun of the game is there - as well as the replayability.

Gear.. Tactics.

-Trupp-Rekrutierung: Überangebot an verfügbaren, charakterlosen Truppen.
-Keine Landkarte, Map, etc.

XCOM 3 better be like this!
No more 90% shot miss BS and no free enemy movements.
Reasonable and actually pretty impressive AI behaviour and really epic and dynamic gameplay.

Add a deeper global strategy layer and remove the silly out-run-the-bombardement missions in some nice DLC, or another installment and the dev`s won themselves the throne of tactical combat games. Well done!

It lacks the depth of XCom, but is a very polished turn-based strategy game. Think XCom + Arcade. Good for a quick 30 minute romp of combat without the extra layers of planning that XCom EU or EW would require. I have kids, so this is my world now. Hold on baby is crying upstairs........

As an Xcom fan I had fun with Gears Tactics.
It doesn't have the great destructible environments that Xcom 2 has, only wooden crates can be destroyed.
The post-game missions get very repetitive as well.

I recommend it, but I'd probably wait for a 50% sale to get the most value out of it.

The reason being it's a good game, the core gameplay loop is there and the tactical part of the game is supreme, satisfying and feels like true gears combined with the best of xcom 2.

The problem stem from missing QoL things and bad design, an example of this is that after every mission you get recruits, but they dissapear after 1 mission, now here's the real problem with that: they spawn with better than default gear (which you can't craft, only loot), so combined with the fact that your roster is limited to 10 soldiers you end up dismissing 1-2 current soldiers, to recruit these, strip their gear (manually each component for each gun), dismiss those and do the next until you worked through the recruits.
The reason you do this cause the lootboxes are very RNG, and this is an additional loot income.

This bring us to the 2nd major issue, they've stopped supporting the game 1 year after release, they released like 2 hotfixes and then a bigger patch that added recolored enemies as new ones, jack as a free 5th squadmate and supreme weapons and weapon mods which are even better then legendaries but what's probably the best is that they added infinite procedural missions, so you can keep playing with your top squad.

So the reason I recommend it is because it's a decent and enjoyable product, the reason why I say wait is because it could've been more, doesn't live up to what it could be if the developers had stuck with their product for more than a meager year.

Great turn based game. My point of reference was XCOM (the 1st one), and I can't decide if my new point of reference is Gears Tactics.
The game warms you up to the rules, and then lets you play. It will challenge your strategy, but will not make you feel like trash for every little mistake you'll make. It will keep you in the game so it can push your strategy more next time you'll play right.
I love it.
Maybe I prefer XCOM's system of evolution of the various classes. It's more simple and clear. Here there are two tendencies in each class (similar to XCOM), and each time you upgrade a character you choose to evolve toward either side. But the pool of special features is very large that I get lost. Eventually there will be a soldier to recruit along the story line that has some feature that I'll like. Only then will I notice it and keep it in mind as an upgrade option for next time.
I highly recommend it for action turn-based / chess-like (but nothing like it) enthusiasts :)

XCOM-lite but with better tactical gameplay

This, if you ask me, in many ways is what the XCOM reboot by Firaxis should've been. It strikes a nice balance between the more granular design of games like the classic XCOM titles and Jagged Alliance and the streamlining of recent games like the aforementioned Firaxis XCOM (from now on just XCOM.)

On the surface Gears Tactics looks pretty much exactly like XCOM, but there are some notable differences. For one, Gears Tactics features at least some level of ballistics simulation in that individual bullets are actually modeled and can hit other targets than the one you aimed at. This, I feel was a very regrettable omission from XCOM, and I'm very glad it was implemented here. It gives the shootouts a sense of authenticity and makes them feel less like they're based on simplistic pen & paper-style calculations, even if under the hood they're still largely that. Here, units also have action points instead of simply having the option to move and/or fire. These are good steps toward un-dumbing down the genre again.

The gameplay design is quite solid overall, and the character classes, though not terribly original, synergize well and allow for a great deal of tactical depth. The overwatch system is especially good when compared to XCOM. In Gears Tactics, instead of your unit automatically taking a shot whenever an enemy comes within range anywhere, you paint a cone. This allows for optimizing your shots such that the shot is only taken at the last possible second before a melee enemy reaches you to gain maximum accuracy, for example. The system is deeper overall because you have to predict where enemies are going to move. Enemies' movement can also be interrupted by overwatch shots. It's a greatly refined version of the XCOM counterpart.

Otherwise, Gears Tactics features a lot of the same kind of abilities as XCOM, with things such as suppressing fire, cloak, various healing, and such. Here, however, melee is in a much larger role. Sometimes enemies are downed instead of dying outright, and they can be finished off by rushing to smack them to bits (yes, very literally) in melee. These executions grant every unit other than the one that performs it an additional action point. It encourages ballsy, aggressive maneuvers as executing an enemy allows for all your other units to press on just a little further on that turn, more so if multiple executions are performed on the same turn. It definitely gives the game some of that Gears of War flavor.

The campaign here doesn't have much of a strategic layer, but at least there is loot that can be acquired through chests. Missions always have some sort of optional objective which grants the player a chest of varying rarity should they manage to complete it. These I found enjoyable and challenging. However, these loot chests are also found simply littered around the maps, so the extra chest gained through the optional objective often doesn't feel like much of a reward. The amount of loot got a little overwhelming for me eventually, which wasn't helped by the not-so-well-designed inventory menus. A definite plus is that the gear isn't always just a simple stat bonus but offers things such as a knockback effect.

I found myself always looking forward to leveling up, which is the mark of a good progression system. The upgrade trees feel seriously impactful in Gears Tactics. Leveling your character is quite slow-paced, and often it can take multiple missions to earn a single level, but when you do, you know your character is going to gain some serious power.

As for the story, well, it's forgettable. It feels like it's there just because they had to have one. This is very much a gameplay kind of game and not a narrative-focused one. Whatever is there is just enough to give the game a sense of direction, but that's all it is. Unfortunately, the lack of a strategic layer such as that of XCOM or Jagged Alliance makes the macro-level flow feel a little lackluster. In XCOM, you feel directly involved and engaged with managing the logistics of defending against the UFO invasion. Here, in contrast, you just simply move from mission to mission with almost no room for choice. The result is a game that's easier to get into and feels more focused but that has much less of a sense of scale. The improvements to the tactical combat make up for a lot of it, though.

The overall audiovisual presentation is top-notch. I especially enjoyed the soundtrack. The music dynamically reacts to the events on the battlefield, and it does so in a rather granular manner—whether you're being charged by a horde, just discovered a new pack of enemies, or between fights. It's a well-written orchestral soundtrack and adds a lot to the atmosphere.

As a whole, this is no doubt one of the better turn-based tactics titles out there. It's still rooted in the same design philosophy as Firaxis XCOMs but injects a dose of some much-needed complexity into it. It still lacks the kind of simulation-like edge present in titles like Jagged Alliance 2 and Silent Storm, but at least it feels a little less like a pen & paper game disguised as a computer game than XCOM.

This is a great XCOM-style game overall, BUT there are definetaly points where it could get better, like in a sequel.

Pros:
- You can enjoy it even without having played any Gears of War game
- Great tactical gameplay
- Soldier customisation
- Solid performance/great graphics (Unreal Engine)
- Boss fights

Cons:
- So called 'side missions'. There are like 3 types of them, and can get repetitive/boring pretty fast. Also, they are not really side missions, as they are not optional at all, but rather filler missions between story missions.
- Equipments. You can get them through lootboxes throughout missions, which is interesting at first, but gets old fast, as the variety/benefits are mildly interesting
- UI of equipping your soldiers. This is maybe the worst part of the game. Just awful. I think I've spent hours just checking new equipments/equipping my soldiers.
- Rooster/levelling up. Your soldiers levelling up so slow that the best thing you can do is to just recruit a higher level soldier and kick your current one. You love your soldiers who you fought trough dozens of enemies? Bad luck, as it's more effective to just kick him and hire a new one with more skills. Absolutely ridicolous.
- Diversity of enemies. Basically, there is only 1 type of enemy, and they have a few iterations (more HP, has an extra skill, etc.), and that's it.

Overall, it's a great tactical game and you should play it if you're into this genre, but I really hope there will be a sequel with the flaws mentioned above corrected.

Well, I am a huge fan of turn-based tactical games, so I enjoyed Gears Tactics. These sniper shots are really REALLY satisfying! One tapping a mob from far away and being able to reset make you love killing scrubs.

Also, the game has some nice ideas, not revolutionary, but interesting nonetheless. For instance, once you played a side mission, your squad will not be available for another one, until you played the required number. Another example? You have optional objectives to achieve to get more equipment, and your squad really works cooperatively (some skills can be used on another squad member to buff the owner of the skill: nice!)

However, the game is far from perfect. First, there are very very few side mission types (3 as far as I remember), which makes the Veteran mode very repetitive. Also, only few equipment options are interesting, the other are not worth it. Which brings me to my last point: equipment farming. This can be understandable in the game itself, but very annoying in the veteran mode (again, making it super boring). It is as if the devs wanted to make the game longer, without putting efforts into it. Sad.

In addition to this crappy veteran mode, I also had to disable the blood (first time I even do this in a game), since it is... well... ugly. Like not well done at all (reminded me these very old pixelated 3D games from the 90s). Finally, bosses' strategies are more repetitive than challenging.

Well, you have been warned. To me, it doesn't make Gears Tactics a bad game, but not as good as some others (XCOM series), especially if you are not fond of the turn-based tactics genre.

I love these types of games and it seems ok on the surface but i just cannot get into it. not gonna lie, i save scum when i first start games like this to test out the consistency, but they dont have an in game option to load, making save scum harder (granted this isnt necessarily bad, but its annoying) and the inconsitency is just awful; dont tell me i will kill the enemy if i hit them with my 90% chance and have me plan around them dying just to get a full hit and have them survive by literally 5 fucking hp omg. change the health system to something where i dont have to waste a full turn to deal as much damage as a 9m to the big toe

Game start with great premise: great graphics, several classes and several viable tactical approaches. New enemies with new abilities are added from time to time. But closer to end game you will see that game is grindy with very repetitive missions on the same type of maps, in the same decorations with the very same goals. And you will be forced to complete those again and again.

I wanted to like this game. I really did. I've had two incomplete playthroughs.

The first had ironman mode on. Coming from an XCOM background I thought this would be a fun way to play - lose a character, have to fight on without them later. Turns out, what this actually means is if any story characters (which are almost always present) die in a mission, the entire campaign ends. That was the end of my first run.

My second run ended when I was deleting some potential recruits from the recruit tab (DO NOT DO THIS!!!!), as they were lower level than my current roster so I figured why not. Well I found out why not. The very next side mission required a team larger than I was now capable of producing. The mission is not skippable, there is no autosave before I made my roster mistake, and there is no way to add recruits. I literally lost this campaign by clicking some wrong options in a menu.

It's otherwise fun! But I can only have so many runs get bricked by game-breaking oversights before I give up.

The combat system, classes, voice acting, graphics, controls, etc. are all top notch. So why do I give it a thumbs down? Because 2/3 of the game is just the same side missions over and over and over again, unskippable and increasingly boring as the game goes on. They're clear time-sinks that add absolutely nothing to the game and you can't skip them. This is the kind of tedious mechanic which makes the game less fun that I expect from a free-to-play title, not a premium, full priced product.

Pretty hard recommend , I'd say I'm mixed.

To address the main complaint of this game, is it repetitive?
Yes and No, i'll explain.

The core gameplay, I've found to very fun, the mechanics are fun and a new for me, the guns feel good a weighty.
There's a lot of enemy variation to keep things interesting and a decent amount of mission types.
It's a very interesting turn-based game.

The problem is that the story is liner,
This gets compared to games like X-com, but it isn't X-com.
There's no research and not much squad management, there are different classes and such, but for the most part, as long as your units survive, they're perfectly ready for the next mission.

Where as in a game like X-com or xenonauts there're a lot of interesting things happening when you're not in combat, like research progression, engineering progress and other side stuff.
In this game there isn't, and that's what makes it feels repetitive to me, which gave me a negative opinion of this game, as i didn't really feel like playing it much.
There's noting to look forward to, it's just mission after mission, you're not developing any new weapons or anything interesting.

There's only 1 weapon per class, and that can't be changed, that's not really a problem, because that weapon can be a bit customized by putting weapon mods that you collect through the campaign, those weapon mods sometimes give better stats and or passive abilities which get better by it's rarity.
The armor however can be changed, any class can wear any armor, and like the weapons there are different armor pieces for the head, body and legs that have different stats and or passive abilities, which likewise are better by rarity.
The armor and weapon mods are given at the end of a mission and collected during the mission, which come in varying rarity(common, rare, mythical, legendary and supreme).
The classes themselves however are very diverse and fun, with each class having 4 individual skill tress that you can branch into at anytime providing you have the skill points.

Character customization is pretty good in this game as well, you can fully rename characters, and recolor armor and weapons, as well as change the material type.
At the start there's little cosmetic options, but there is a lot, that is acquired as you progress the story.

Alot of people seem to review this game as if it was a comparison to something like XCOM which personally i don't think their at all comparable... They have roughly the same gameplay but overall their two different games

However in saying that i knew this game was going to be pretty bland pretty much as soon as it came out but decided since its on sale for $20 why not play it for the lore as gears is a personal favourite series of mine

I did enjoy the lore it added and did enjoy killing grubs and watching them explode though the entire game felt extremely repetitive, very boring and honestly character development was rather poor though i actually didn't encounter any bugs as most people seem to exaggerate as if there was numerous amounts but it probably doesn't help that all the achievements that involve doing a certain number of things are broken such as ''kill 10 grubs'' like bro i finished the game I'm pretty sure i killed more than 10 lol

This game is really good. The combat is spot on and the tactics need some careful consideration.
I would consider it on par with XCOM 2 probably. The combat is perhaps more refined.

If I was to moan about anything they would be small gripes. Maybe there could have been more to do in the base of operations, the levelling up is a bit linear and mission selections are usually narrow. But the game wants you to proceed with its story (which is a bit general I guess) which is what it is.
Rate then game for its combat system though which is SOLID.

Worth it for any Turn based Strat fans

From Advance Wars to XCOM, I love tactics games. I did not really enjoy this game though. It starts off pretty fun -- the classic Gears of War gore/brutality is here, the missions are enjoyable, and there is a twist on the execution system from the typical Gears of War games.

Each turn, your units get 3 action points that can be used to shoot, move, reload, or use one of their special abilities. Executing an enemy usually requires you to leave cover so it is risky but if you can pull it off, all of your other units gain another action. This means you can extend your turn and take out more enemies or put the into overwatch. It's a cool mechanic but I just found the game bland otherwise.

There is not mission variety and you cannot expand your squad beyond 4 units. The upgrade system is also pretty lame -- you find crates throughout the missions that contain upgrade equipment (XCOM 2 does this as well) but there is no way to have universal upgrades like in XCOM. I did like how each class has a skill tree, but the game is sorely lacking a central hub area like the monastery in Fire Emblem: Three Houses or the base in XCOM: Enemy Unknown/XCOM 2.

I did have some fun with the game but it just didn't hold my interest.

Wow what a load of crap this game became after 21 hours. Its the same mission types over and over again. At higher difficulty levels the AI just resorts to cheating by giving AI units increased accuracy and reducing your units accuracy. On top of this there were a number of times the AI units were still active after losing ALL of their health. Some of the missions the scripting is so bad it is obvious that they just resort to dumb mechanics to make you lose your units. For example enemy snipers can kill your characters with one shot. This is only possible for your snipers to do for weak enemies only and in rare situations as well. Waste of money.

The game was rather fun during the first act, when everything is still fresh. But after that the same missions and maps keep coming up again and again, towards the end of Act 2 I was getting rather bored. The new enemies and modifiers that get introduced do not significantly change the way you approach the game. The overall story is not all that interesting either.

Controls are rather clunky and play can be slow; e.g. Jack's reload ability has each member of your squad do the reload animation one by one, instead of them all doing it at the same time (same with squad therapy). The UI design is pretty poor, a few tweaks could make the QoL a lot better, for example in the layout of the squads display the rarity of the mods as the outline.

On the positive side, the skill tree offers some interesting options to modify your squad members.

It was fun at first, but the gameplay loop became samey. Not enough unique weapons or skill tree abilities to really reward you for experimenting. I couldn't finish the story because it was always the same tactic that won the day. Story nothing special either, got bored half-way through it. If it's under $25 I'd say get it, but you'll find better value in Xcom.

Though I do appreciate the unique turn system they made with overwatch and killing units for extra moves.

Great turn-based tactics game! Different from X-Com and the like as this game wants you to be aggressive and take risks - and you get rewarded for doing that. If you lose in a regular stage, it doesn't take long to replay. Boss battles are fun and take longer, so you have to be plan ahead, otherwise it's back to to the stage start! Overall leveling and gearing up allow you to customise your squad for your play style - though each of the soldier types have specific branches that seem to work better.

Hell yeah. Just as fun as X-com to me with very similar mechanics, but a more aggressive twist. Performing executions gives your team more action points, so constantly running out and pushing the frontline gives you an extended turn and lets you play offensively to avoid damage as kind of a risk vs reward thing.

I love a turn-based tactics game. I'm cool with the Gears mythology. So, a turn-based tactics game set in the Gears universe? Sure. I'll give it a go, if it's on sale. Here are some random thoughts:

Gears Tactics is, apparently, a scenic tour of the courtyards of Sera (with the odd square and piazza thrown in). It looks good, and bits are destructible. The lack of variety in the maps becomes more and more noticeable as you take on side missions and, especially, in the post-campaign veteran mode.

Speaking of the campaign, I got 40 hours out of it and played every side-mission on offer. Your mileage may vary. I'm currently 20 hours into the post-campaign mode which is just ... more of the same really. You get four randomly generated missions (of which there are, essentially, four types) with randomly generated conditions for success and optional objectives (e.g. no grenades, complete in 15 turns or less, use at least one Scout, use no Heavies) for randomly generated loot. Each is rewarded (in Jacked campaign mode) with a piece of supreme-tier equipment and a piece of epic-tier (I have had one or two legendaries). After completing three of them, you get a Veteran main mission which ... it's the same. You're doing the same thing. Ad nauseum. Ad Infinitum.

There's a fair amount of customisation you can do to your squaddies, within limits. You can't change their face or voice, for instance. It's OK. Just don't expect XCOM 2 levels of variety.

Inventory (and barracks) management is rudimentary. Once you get to the post-campaign level you'll have lots of stuff. It can be a pain in the @$$ to find it, manage it, move it ... it just becomes a pain in the @$$.

Bugs. Had a few. A couple of crashes to desktop. I've had enemies get hung up on bits of terrain while moving and all I could do was reload the last checkpoint. Frustrating as hell. Not as frustrating as the enemies which can overwatch - and shoot - through walls and other bits of terrain, but pretty irritating.

There are a lot of other bits and pieces that I could mention but, to cut to the chase, it's a decent game that's really, fantastically over-priced. I understand why (consistency across platforms) but that doesn't change the fact that it's too expensive for what it is ... which is actually a pretty reasonable turn-based tactics game. There are lots of areas where the devs could make quality-of-life improvements and add easy content (maps!). Maybe fix a bug or two.

As it stands, half price is the absolute upper limit for what I would consider paying for it. A tentative thumbs up; more content and / or some QoL improvements (or a steeper discount) would change that rating.

  • X-com style but with Gear of War characters, weapons, and setting
  • A bit more approachable for new players than X-Com
  • Some of the mechanics and UI are actually better than X-Com
  • Runs and looks great even on lower-end hardware
  • Finished on Normal difficulty in about 34 hours

I cannot recommend this game. Sure it starts off like it is going to be a surefire match for those that like xcom. But soon, it gets very repetitive. You are forced to take heroes that you don't really like. You spend all this time working on recruits and grooming them, then you are forced to not use them at all in the final battle. Yes that's right, you don't even have the option of using a heavy in the final battle. The amount of different types of mobs in this are incredibly limited. Don't even think about training the recruits you got early on, because they won't reach a high level. It's better to just hire new recruits towards the end of the game and respec them since they are automatically at the higher levels. So much for attachment to your work. Lastly, the save game checkpoint system literally ruined the game for me. Made it all the way to the final battle and the final check point with 4 characters I didn't even have any interest in using. Exit game and came back later, the game bugged out and restarts the entire mission. Yeah, not going to do that again. It was like nails on a chalkboard the first time. One last thing: There are 4 tiers of equipment. The final one being orange (supreme). Wanna guess when you get your first supreme award case? You guessed it, as a reward for the FINAL mission. LOL. Nope! Bye.

Gear Tactics starts off as a strong turn based strategy game, on par with XCOM/XCOM2 in the first 2 (well paced) acts of the game. Unfortunately, the third and final act of this game is terribly paced with forced side missions that are repetitive and unimaginative main story missions. There is no way to skip the side missions unless you deploy only one unit (instead of the usual 4) and commit suicide with that unit, sacrificing him or her to fail the side mission so that you don't have to play it and get back to the main story missions.

Overall, Gears Tactics is a fun turn based strategy game, that innovates and brings new ideas to the genre along with some seriously fun boss fights. Unfortunately, a terrible final act holds this game back from greatness.

My rating: 7/10, worth your time if you like XCOM/XCOM2

  • Highly replay-able
  • No issue with GTX 960 card
  • Decent storyline
  • Great visual and effect
  • Hero are customizeable
  • Common soldier also customizeable
  • Loot to upgrade your arsenal
  • Ironman Mode

All meat, no filler.

Greats Tactics gets straight yup the nitty-gritty of the turn-based tactics genre, the tactics. While this meat and potatoes is really good, offering a beguiling campaign and satisfying action economy (on the Gears' side; the Locusts really like to overwatch camp), it's not enough to keep you coming back for more, as there is no salad or breadsticks of a base layer strategy that trickles down into the combat layer; no autopsies, no base building, no diplomacy for support. You'll see everything there is to see about 20-30 hours in (thanks to some gameplay filler that should have been dedicated to a base or diplomacy layer), and even with its story and epic boss fights, will not keep you coming back for more, such as the steak that is XCOM: EW (especially when garnished with the Long War mod) or the customizable burger that is XCOM 2, with the curly fries and drink that is its WotC expansion (as well as all their mods) both ou'd which can keep you engaged for thousands of hours.

Long story short: this game is meat and potatoes. They're really, really good, but the lack of anything else doesn't make coming for second very appetizing.

I would give this a 'meh' rating, not a negative rating. But if it has to be positive or negative, it gets the negative. It's an alright story and the gameplay is actually very good. The problems is the side missions. The side missions are so dull and repetitive. They even repeat maps for the same kinds of side missions. Everytime I play one, it's the same exact one I've played before (more or less, sometimes there are different modifiers, etc). Really makes the game a drag. I just want to continue the story and I have to waste time on stuff I've already seen.

Pros
The game has tons of action.
The missions repeat often but the maps are always different so they are always interesting.
Takes the best aspects of other turn based games.
The campaign is quiet long for a turn based game.
Every class has alot of different abilities that can make the game very interesting.
A.I. is smart and often unpredictable.

Cons
Some missions can ramp up the difficulty to a point where the game goes from challenging to frustrating.
Alot of missions dont allow anyone in your squad to die to complete the mission, which kind of defeats the purpose of being able to recruit new soldiers.
The loot is a little weak and doesnt really give your soldiers the edge.

Overall Impressions
Anyone who enjoys turn based X-COM like games should definitely get this, altough it's not the best in this genre, it's definitely worth checking out especially if you enjoy Gears Of War games... 8.7 / 10

I picked this up thinking it would be a combination of Gears of War and XCOM. It's not quite that, but it's pretty close. I would've liked more customization as well as an easier way to get different types of armor...but that's not really in keeping in line with Gears of War's style I guess.

I would've also enjoyed multiplayer. I mean, how do you get away with not having a multiplayer option in 2020? Maybe we'll see it in the sequel.

All in all, it's a good game, and definitely worth picking up. That said, there are some changes I'd like to see in the future.

Like lots of other comments on here the mission system broke my back for this game and I simply could not keep myself playing as it grew more and more frustrating. Long, annoying, overly hard, with limited group make ups missions of the same 2-3 types on repeat got beyond old very quickly, than you get to do the same levels over again in the campaign in some slight altered way. It just feels extremely lazy on the development side. I really wanted to love this game but the former combined with very impact-less gear and poor balancing of most levels where you can get easily overrun in one turn with mobs from the sky without even being able to get setup.

Off to youtube to see how the story ends since there's one somewhat interesting story item I just want answered. Sadly its not worth the effort.

As a positive the game play itself, animations and overall feel of the game are all superb, sadly the actual game behind it felt devoid and spread thin to nothing. Also without ANY form of a sandbox mode or a mode to simply level up your charaters in and experiment...I have zero interest left after only 22 hours

One of my absolute favorite turn based games, especially with the character design and the story arc. However after completing the main story line the game stagnates however there is still the grind for legendary weapons and gear which adds to the endgame. I am especially excited to see how the new update will affect the endgame content.

Great Tactics game.
Plus:
Like XCOM, but with a few new mechanics.
More narrative.
Boss fights
5 classes with each of them has 4 sub class skills trees
Good GUI
Good handling of commands
Didnt encounter any bugs.

Negative:
Less re-playability than XCOM
No strategic layer
I can only play the first Act. Game crashed twice in the first Act. And it crashed 4-5 times in the first mission of Act 2 until I gave up on it.

Would love to give a thumps up, but sadly this game has crashing issues so that I cannot play it.

Will revisit the game in once month. Maybe the update will fix my crashing issues.

Is the game good? Absolutely.
is it worth $60? Definitely not. I paid $30 on sale and I am still not sure if the price was worth it.

This is a great first attempt at a tactics game based on the Gears universe. The enemy design, combat, upgrade system, and all the micro-systems have had a lot of work put into them and you can definitely tell. Of course the graphics and sound design are up to Gears quality. These reasons are why the game is overall pretty fun.

The story is decent too, although short if you rip out the filler BS missions. This is the biggest and most glaring issue with the game that really ruins what would be an otherwise stellar game. There are way way way too many filler missions that have basically nothing to do with the story. There's 3 or 4 generic missions that are recycled ad nauseam in between story missions. They are fun the first time or 2, but get old incredibly fast. What's worse, they make up probably 50% of the game. Half of the missions in this game are generic, boring, and repetitive missions that hold absolutely no weight.

I do hope that Coalition makes a sequel to this game because the actual gameplay itself is fantastic. Hopefully next time they can focus on making the rest of the package up to par.

I still have to mark this game as recommended, but only if you can get the game on sale.

I haven't played the game for a few months and decided to get back into it tonight but ran into a login issue with the Microsoft Account. After following the instructions to login to the account in a browser, I was notified the Microsoft Account was flagged for Fishing/Spam/Suspicious Behaviour.

The game requires you to sign into a Microsoft Account before continuing and months earlier, I had created one specifically to play this game. I had only ever used this account for this game, yet it's blocked and the only way to unlock the account would be to use a phone number to get a reset code.

I'm not sure how giving up a phone number would verify the account is not one that engages in Fishing/Spam/Suspicious Behaviour but I'm not going to find out. As such, my $100 game purchase has just been rendered unplayable, seemingly because I haven't played the game/logged into the Microsoft Account recently. I see the option to create and sign in with another Microsoft Account instead of using my existing one but I don't know if I want to bother if this will happen again.

You can judge for yourself whether or not this would affect you. For those already with an Microsoft/XBox Account, I doubt you'll run into this particular issue.

This game is a blast at the beginning: the fast gameplay and the fact that your whole team gain APs when you do an execution encourages you to rush the enemy. The tactics parts is fairly well done. The game fails however to be great with the skills and the items. They feel a bit too generic and do not change the gameplay enough. It also falls a bit flat towards the end where the missions feel more generic and the grinding becomes a bit boring. The recruit system does not make you feel like you care about your soldiers as you can get recruits of nearly the same level if they die.In my opinion, this game is quite good but not as good as Xcom 2 WOTC. But if you already played that and need a tactics game fix, it will calm your itch.

This game came out about the same time as X-Com Chimera and if you are into your turn based strategy then it was like Christmas came early.
Both titles are similar in how they play however Gears Tactics is more action orientated and has none of the base building and little side quests between missions that X-Com has and i think that's the only thing Gears Tactics is really missing.
In terms of graphics and sound GT is hands down the better game, the story is also excellent although i'm not familiar with the 'gears' lore i enjoyed it and it drove the missions forward.
I think my only slight con with the game was the final mission, it was a tad drawn out and repetitive and was well a little disappointing.
All in all this is a must but if you are a fan of the genre, the price is a tad high but there's always a steam sale around the corner.
Highly recommended 8/10

A nice chill game to play if you're looking for an X-Com experience in the gears universe, however it does lack any form of base management or upgrading/research if that is something you are looking for.

It does a good job of providing a fun turn-based experience which throws me down memory lane of gears of war and all the fun I had playing GOW 1,2 and 3.

I'd say pick this up when it's on sale and don't go into it thinking you're going to get as in-depth an experience as say XCOM 1 or 2. Still a good game though :D

This game is on the good side of mediocre. A little short and lacking polish but fun anyways. It plays similar to Xcom (The rebooted series.) while being distinctly different. Definitely pick this one up if you're looking for something to fill the gap before Xcom 3, or if you're fed up with how flimsy the soldiers are in Xcom. The soldiers here would whoop the tar out of Xcom soldiers.

I am writing this review after completing the campaign on Insane and getting most of the achievements.

The good.
- Beautiful graphics. What you would expect from the Gears franchise.
- SoundFX.....love it. Grenade sounds chunky, gun sounds heavy. No complaints here.
- Gameplay is very fast paced since you get 3 actions per turn and shooting is not turn ending. So lots of flexibility in terms of combat. Very interesting boss fights mechanics at the end of each act.

The bad
- Limited customization options. You can't swap gender, race or even faces. So, you can't make the squad look like your friends.
- Maps are kinda static. Seems like there are a limited number of map pools and after a while it gets kinda dull seeing the same maps again and again.

Conclusion
Great game if you can get it during sale. Not sure if its worth the full price at the moment (probably better to get XCOM EU/EW, XCOM 2: WOTC or XCOM: CS if you have not played those yet). All in all, great game on sale if you want to scratch that turn-based strategy itch.

The game is ok if you never played X com 2. Otherwise its a pretty bad knockoff game. The levels lack mechanics and variation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I have over 800+ hours into XCOM2, but GT has set the standard for what 'tactical shooter' should be. The core gameplay of taking cover, setting up overwatches, disrupting movement, action point economy, chaining executions... is a thing of beauty. XCOM is almost better described as 'tactical puzzle' by comparison. The core game runs about 40 hours and there's not a ton of replayability, but 40 hours is pretty damn good for any game. Some of the mission types get a tad repetitive, and there's unfortunately not much of a strategic layer. It tells a scripted story with scripted characters, and that's all. This is not the XCOM experience of emergent storytelling and mod support is minimal, limiting you to just tweaking weapon and enemy values. But if you want the pure uncut cocaine of tactical shooting, GT is the gold standard. If they ever make a GT2 with a deep immersive strategic layer, XCOM3 will really have its work cut out for it to compete.

The first few hours are great: lots of toys to play with, some character progression and deep customization.

But then boredom hits: the boss fights are the same endless sequence from start to finish, the side missions are repetitive and annoying, and the mission nerfs/constraints at the end are frustrating (ie: 2 actions instead of 3 while running away from air strikes or 1 bullet per gun unless you managed to find some +ammo mods).

They had a game with great potential, but artificially pumped its length with grind and tedium.

Dull imitation of XCOM2:
- no strategic layer
- railed story with bland dialogs
- stupid leveling system where no one is relevant except the heroes (all the rest of the team will be simply replaced by better recruits because leveling progression of your favourites is too slow to keep pace)
- limited enemies and bosses
- repetitive maps and missions
- very expensive for what it offers (even if I bought on sale!)
- limited customization of the team (as heroes are fixed and other recruits are irrelevant)

Only pro:
- (very few) bosses fight
- some nice mechanics (overwatch is better than in XCOM)

Overall vote not sufficient

Recommended Game,

For people you love some Tactics,

ACT I - You will be like Amazing
ACT II - then, OK Good
ACT III - You will be like, OMG just give me Main mission. i just want to finish the game, (Annoying side mission)

Game has huge potentials, if they had the following
1. Give importance to non-story Character, Recruit.
2. Pit hole brings randomness/Uncertainity , this was not used much in ACT II/ACT III
3. ACT III - too much side missions, the loot was not even worth it so you will get annoyed.
4. All your Character will be like a one man army too over powered. I didn't even had a chance to see mini bosses moves in late game.
5. No replay value.
6. Lack of enemy variety. Map's were reused too many times in late game due to side missions.
7. Unbalanced difficulty hike. mostly at higher difficulty you be one shot
8. Game rewards too much extra actions, this makes late game less enjoyable
9. limits the Max squad size to 4, could have increase this and reduce Action point rewards

Even though, i recommend the game. because i really had fun for first two ACT...
most people might have liked it if developer reduced the number of side mission in ACT III or introduced some new challenges

Loved Cole ,... looking forward for Cole in next game.
I did not like other Gears game mainly because of the screen animation (gives me head ache). they did try to give option in later games but not much fan of FPS games.

Enjoy the game guys, i really did.

Game requires a mandatory Microsoft xbox live account, which is nowhere stated in the product description due to which I cannot recommend the game in general.

To be fair, the game itself is okay. Game plays is fine, but I would which the game to have more depth of character customization and build. All this is much worse compared to XCOM unfortunately.

For the price I would definately more then to XCOM Chimera...

Decent idea, poor execution. This game gets old fast and that's its biggest flaw. You do the same mission types over and over again. You can't just play the campaign either as side missions aren't optional which just adds to the repetitiveness. The side missions come with slight modifiers to try to make them more interesting but all they do is make them more tedious. Leveling also seems broken. I could use the same guy for every mission but then just turn around and recruit someone at his exact level erasing the point of working my soldier up from level one. As a fan of the original trilogy the writing in this is utter garbage. It feels like barely anything happened in this game. I also didn't care about a single story related character in this game, I cared more for the characters I renamed and redesigned. To the games credit it runs well, the boss fights were the most interesting parts of the game, and the sound design sounds as a Gears game should. If you REALLY want to play it get it on a steep sale.

It started off pretty good, but oh my good, it gets *really* boring after a while. The same missions, same objectives, same cut scenes, same assets being recycled again and again. Even the maps are recycled.

I actually stopped playing after act 3 due to this. The game desperately needs more content and more variety.

If this game was $20 it would be worth it, but at $60 it's not. Stay away, or get X-Com instead.
