A rogue-like deck-building game with table top battles! Choose a hero and allegiance then dive into the dungeon and build your deck as you battle!

DungeonTop is a fresh new take on the roguelike deckbuilding genre, bringing a flavour of tight table top battles into the mix. Employ clever board tactics to gain advantage such as range, flanking, tanking and rushing.

Auf in den Dungeon!
Tja, das meiste über´s Spiel weißt du sicher bereits lieber Leser. Sonst wärst Du kaum hier.
Also, sollst Du´s kaufen, wenn du Roguelieke Deckbuilder magst? Ja.

Absoluter Griff ins Klo !
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have fun going down quite often in this game in the first two levels, then have fun. This game just costs a lot of time and getting gold is not as easy as you think.

Absolute grip into the toilet !

Excellent game. Don't be put off by its casual look. Whilst this is a great game for picking up during slow spells at work, lunch breaks etc, it has masses of hidden strategic depth. Also don't be fooled into thinking it's simplistic by the easy start. Winning with mage is tough even on beginner difficulty and on harder difficulties winning with any character will be dependant on clever deck construction.

There are 3 character types Warrior, Rogue, and Mage; 3 starter decks for each of these that work very differently, then there are the well balanced difficulty levels to challenge you all over again with all of the above together with several alternative game modes including the excellent draft mode to really shake up your starter deck. You also spend points gained or saved from successful runs to unlock new and powerful cards.

Given its rogue-like nature the game is near perfect as it is. The only real criticism being that none of the decks are specifically made for any of the 3 characters which can result in your constructing decks that have poor synergy. On the other hand, it can be argued that the fact it is so easy to create a bad deck is all part of getting your strategies right. But what I'd love to see in a sequel is decks that can be fully customised from the outset and extended story driven campaigns. Strange then that this absolute gem has gone largely unnoticed thus far.

DungeonTop is quite well polished and introduces some interesting twists to the rougelite deckbuilding genre. The game provides good entertainment for a couple of hours but just doesn't have the progression or tactical depth to remain entertaining in the long haul. I was able to beat the game 3 or 4 times in my 7 hours of playtime and felt like there was no point in continuing another run. There are just far better games available in this genre - it's only worth getting this if you've exhausted most other options.

Average game

Gameplay loop:

1) Pick a mode (there a few)
2) Select one of 3 characters (1 unlocked and 2 locked)
3) Select a starting deck out of 3
4) Explore a grid dungeon
5) Fight enemies in a grid based tactical battle via your cards
6) Encounter some events
7) Fight boss. Did you kill the boss? If not go back to step 1
8) Go back to step 4 for 2 more times (three levels in total)

Why I don't recommend it
* The game is simple. A little too much. Even the tactical battles boils down to relatively the same thing over time
* One of the classes is broken. You'll feel like a god playing it and it's not much fun due to this
* The game is actually easier and faster if you don't summon minions. Unfortunately summing minions is a core of the game...
* The map exploration is a waste of time. There's really no sense of exploration and is borderline waste of time.

I give this game 2 gold out of 4

While DungeonTop makes good use of grid based battles, balance issues plague DungeonTop. Almost no random event is worth taking, and most runs end with the same strategies being dominant run after run.

Other oddities exist, such as a lack of class specific cards to be unlocked. Each new card can appear for any class, leaving you with cards with no synergy in your faction your draft picks. Additionally, many cards in DungeonTop feel as if they have no home in any deck. This eventually leaves you with all remaining unlocks being choices to pollute your draft pool for every future run on that save file.

It's a shame, because DungeonTop in it's core has strong enough center to standout in it's own in a sea of deckbuilder roguelikes, but fails to stick the landing.

Maybe pick it up on sale if you're a student of game design, or desperate for more deckbuilding, otherwise you should look elsewhere.

Card game mixed with roguelike, makes a tasty result. You've got three characters with different playstyles and three factions for them that differ it more. Not to mention a secret floor with powerful bosses. The fact that You can save between fights makes it a sweet game You can adapt to Your style.

This game feels repetitive and too easy. Hardly any encounter poses a threat. The horrible pacing doesn't help with the average run taking over 2 hours. Because of that the game feels repetitive and too easy. The game allows you to skip battles but there is no incentive to do so. Choices don't feel meaningful since you will breeze through the enemies no matter what you do. Due to that the game feel repetitive and too easy. There is little variety in enemies and random events. You will fight the same exact enemies and bosses in every run. This makes the game feel repetitive and grindy and also too easy.

DungeonTop is a great little time waster. I think we all have a few of those in our life, the game we load up when we have an hour to kill. It's easy enough to find a strategy you really like, and the random nature of roguelikes slowly pushes you into different ways of playing all on it's own. It wasn't long before I had a dozen or more combinations of cards I was trying to recreate, because they had all worked really well for me. It keeps things interesting.
At about an hour to an hour and a half to completely run through the 3 floors, it's not too hard to jump in and play even on a busy schedule. I recommend it.

Beware that initial playthroughs may frustrate you. It is recommended you start out with the Warrior and the Shield icon, it's just easie to surviver. Also you need to remain picky about cards. If you die, you have to start over. You can save after each battle and you can kill program if you're losing.

Really love this game. Graphics, music, mechanics, it all comes together very well and it’s highly addictive.

Much less random than other rogue games like Darkest Dungeon and more strategic, giving more choice each turn. It also has more interesting cards to offer than most deck builders and a game board adds brilliant chess like strategy element where position matters a great deal.

Adding cards can water down the power level of your deck, lessening your chances of finding the strongest combinations. Particularly when you mostly want to sling spells and don't want many minions, you'll want to keep your deck lean and mean. This aspect of wanting to keep your deck spell detracts from the fun of getting new cards as a reward. I would have liked the option to maintain multiple decks to vary strategies. And I would actually like the idea of cards adding to your life total, so that if you have many minions of equal power level, you get rewarded for having a thick deck that is diverse.

The game isn't a whole lot about card combo's, even though they exist (and too specific at times), as it is about exploiting gained hero

abilities. Every minion also has it’s own little useful abilities and upgrading them as well as redrawing your opening hand can help you balance your deck out so that you’re never left with garbage in your hand.

Speaking of cards, the whole thing is really more tile based. This leaves more room for all kinds of boosts for your hero like items, potions and weapons.

Visually it’s very polished and extremely pleasing to my eyes. This game is much more fun to me than Hearthstone or Faeria, it has more character, atmosphere and simply more strategy because of the constant importance of position.

The game can be texty at times and wording isn’t always optimal. But it’s definitely deep and there’s always a lot going on. Playing more and treading deeper into dungeons adds a lot of bonuses to your hero to exploit. The game has plenty of replayability since you can very between 3 heroes and 3 factions of cards, that’s 9 combinations but probably 2 replays after beating (if it’s beatable at all, apparently not…yet?) should suffice.

Because everything can be controlled with a single swipe, this game should really be on mobiles. Wouldn’t complain if it came to consoles too.

It's very impressive and really seemed to be worth my money. I know some guys are blasé with card games but I have loved them since Magic The Gathering and this game finally seemed the answer after a long quest for an addictive card game and this little gem definitely is quenching my thirst. I’ve tried all kinds of games like Faeria or Deck of Ashes and most have let me down a bit, while I have really liked some others like Order& Chaos Duels, Ascension, Thronebreaker and Forge (Mtg) but this is my new favorite!

Game is most defintely worth 10 bucks, maybe 15 if you're bored.
the game is very simple and straight forward. after about 4-5 hours though, you see the limits.
its a fun quick game with fun builds, but no depth.
buying new extra cards is pointless, cause they suck. clearing the game just opens a SLIGHTLY harder mode. money is pretty pointless.
as i said, quick simple fun, with little depth. if you see it for 10 bucks, BUY it.

All cards heroes builds and talents are VERY different and completly change the game over and its really fun even if the maze and the enemies are the same with only a little variety at the very end few mobs, its still fun to kill them with various ways or even replay youre favorite build and see how far you can push the op-ness.

However after difficulty 10 and on the game is not ballanced and becomes luck based, if thats your jam, than i guess it got that too. Farming difficulty gives longetivity for the game but most difficulty levels are kinda meh and only every 5 is noticable, so wish that would toned down.

Still worth its price trough and trough, art is excelent, no bugs or glitches and everything happens as expected, solid polished experience. Music is okay, but wont shut up on alt tab.

It was fun for a little while. It is still new and hopefully will get updates in the near future. It just gets old too quickly without much variety between character choice. If you've played one you have basically played all of them. That said, it does, in fact, have some very potent potential.

So I loved the idea of the game, but only found this fun for a few hours only.

Once I got over the new approach to card rogue game, it was a really linear path fights, easy deck building, lack of challenges or choices, and very slow development.

There is the option to skip fights, but there just isn't any advantage to doing so. Just an illusion of choice.

Card deck building is straight forward here. Lower size decks, increase level of cards. Spam. There just isn't much thinking needed after that.

Development I found to be incredibly slow. I gave up waiting hoping for good changes.

While I had a few fun hours, I do regret buying this.

Pretty interesting game; has the concept of Slay the Spire and has the artwork similar to Darkest Dungeon. I've played through roughly 20+ hours of it already, beat the hydra pretty much every time on Ferocity 0 and 1 so far. The monsters themselves can be a little finicky, especially if your deck isn't equipped to handle those types of situations.

I've fought against the secret boss on the 4th floor several times now as all three classes--I lost every time. The final 2 monsters including the secret boss on the 4th floor are extremely difficult, even when the deck is fully optimized (full synergy and most of the deck being 3-starred (e.g. 17/20 are 3-starred and the other 3/20 are 2-starred). I haven't been able to figure out a way to tackle this boss, especially since you need to donate an artifact to get the key to unlock the 4th floor. This means that you are not guaranteed to get to the final floor every time. Hopefully someone creates a guide for this soon as it's driving me nuts.

Either way, it's a pretty straightforward game, pretty difficult so far, but the secret boss is seriously overpowered haha. I'ved played similar-like genres in the past, and this fits it pretty nicely. Expecting to see some patch updates for all the monsters and possibly some better explanations on how certain card mechanics word (e.g. Discard); otherwise, I'd be less inclined to use those in my decks.

Cheers!

This game should be right up my alley in theory, but the actual implementation leaves much to be desired. There are several glaring issues with the User Interface (UI) that make it painful to play. This is unacceptable for a full release. As others have pointed out in their own reviews, the game feels like it should be in Early Access.

The concept behind the game is clever, but the implementation is terrible: UI is very counter intuitive, and text descriptions are misleading. It could have been okay for an early access version, but now as it is released, it is unacceptably poorly done.

It's what the developers set out for it to be. It's a rogue-like card builder, similar to Slay the Spire, but vastly different in how combat works. Each battle is set out on a grid, where cards and spells are played. You make moves and have to think ahead about what your opponents are doing, especially if you consider that your hero's health is constant throughout the dungeon. After you die or beat the game, any gold you earned can be used to unlock new content. Overall, I think it's a great game at this price point. If you enjoy this type of rogue-like, you will like this game. If you don't enjoy card-like rogue-like games, then you probably won't like this game.

That being said, I would make a few recommendations. I hope the sound design isn't fully completed. While some of it is fine, much of it is stale and irritating, such as the intro battle music and when you click through the map or game settings. I would enjoy it if gold could also be used for cosmetics, like upgrading the cards to gold versions. The map is a little bland as well, so having more visuals may be a good idea (look at Monster Train for what I mean.)

Get it and I hope you enjoy it!

This is a good roguelite turn-based tactical game.

I enjoyed the puzzle for both the tactical combat and deck-building, but I don't think it would have much appeal for people who aren't fans of the genre.

Go in expecting an interesting first few runs as you figure how things work, with the option of another couple dozen if it grabs you, and you'll be happy.

Each run takes a couple hours as you add, remove, and upgrade cards, along with collecting weapons and artifacts for your hero, who starts on the board.

After each run you can spend gold to unlock new cards and, if you won you unlock higher difficulty levels as well. There are no permanent direct upgrades.

I particularly enjoy the enemy variety. While some were just bigger orcs, many offered completely unique challenges.

One other note - Dungeontop doesn't seem to go for tight balance, so expect cards to be very different power levels and ride the waves!

(Context: I've recently beaten Ferocity 10 with the Mage and 4 with the Warrior, still struggling to understand the Rogue's optimal playstyle)

The tactical factor of the grid battles are a great addition to the deckbuilding roguelike concept. Weapon styles, talents, artifacts and talents interact seamlessly with each other, and having 3 starting decklists per class per allegiance gives you 3x3x2=18 possibilities, which lets everyone test the various playstyles the game supports from the start of the run.

Issues: I get the feeling that slim decks (8- cards) are greatly encouraged by the game as of now, which may be intended but leads to little variance when it comes to powerful endgame builds. There also are a few talents/treasures that carry insanely hard once you polished your deck which I hope will get checked before the full release.

Hi devs, it's a very good game full of interesting mechanics!

My only gripes are the lack of save when you finally reach the lowest dungeon and have information that further dungeons are to be developed. Please give a save option - I have build my mage during a few hours and I want to retain it.

Otherwise, it's a very solid product and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to deckbuilder-lovers.

Spellsword Cards: DungeonTop:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The land has been plagued by the Steel Curse which has ravaged the population throughout the Kingdom. Only the strongest survived the Curse, and now a new threat has appeared in every city in the kingdom, in the form of iron gates, where hordes of terrifying monsters seem to come up from deep below the earth. Only the strongest and most fearless heroes would dare to enter these gates and investigate the dungeons. Find the source of these outbreaks and eliminate all monsters. You are the next hero in line; welcome to Spellsword Cards: DungeonTop!
Spellsword Cards: DungeonTop is a rogue-like deckbuilding/turn-based strategy game developed and self-published by One Up Plus Entertainment and Surefire.Games on the 16th of January 2020 on Steam as an early access title.
As you launch the game for the first time, you’ll be prompted to complete a small tutorial, which is basically to show you how the combat phase works. From there you’ll be all set to create your hero and adventure into the Dungeon.
In this early access version, there are two out of three classes of heroes for selection: Warrior and Mage. Only the Warrior will be accessible to play until you manage to unlock the Mage, which will require gold to do so. The third class is the Rogue, but it is not available in the current game status. The classes have talents, which include weapons and additional skills to unlock when levelling up. After selecting your hero, you’ll be choosing the alliance (minions) or a deck of cards that you will take into the dungeon. Each of the alliances (5 in total but only 2 available in the early access version) has three decks of cards for selection, which consist of 10 cards as a combo of units and spell cards.
As you start your first run, your hero will be in a room with four dedicated paths, but three of them will be blocked by gates. Your goal is to find the two-sided portal to unlock one of the three gates and move onto the other pass. But before you get there, you’ll need to navigate your hero within the dungeon. It will have multiple rooms from where you start, and the portal. Some rooms will be empty, and some will have a question mark inside, which means that you’ll trigger a random event. You’ll see anvil icon for the blacksmith, where you can upgrade a free card on each floor (three in total) and/or buy an upgrade with gold or treasure. You’ll also see a lot of nasty monsters within other rooms and when you walk through, you can choose to either sneak past or fight the monster.
If you decide to fight, a grid from 4x4 to 10x4 will appear, and the combat mode will proceed. First you’ll receive three random cards from your deck. You’ll be able to keep them all or select one, two or all of them to redraw. Next, you’ll need to place your unit cards on a tile next to your hero and if you have an offensive spell available, you might want to strike the main enemy monster and start inflecting damage straight away. Each of your unit cards will have power points (yellow) and hit points (red) and your hero will have a weapon icon as well; you can change to a better weapon before or after a fight (if you have a better one, of course). Anyway, power points will represent how much damage the unit card will inflict to an enemy card, while the hit points represent your health and how many hits the card can take before vanishing from the grid. Your task is to eliminate the main monster to win the battle. What is interesting is that depending on which unit card you place on the board next to one of your cards, combinations will start to take effect and you might increase power and hit points. In each turn, you’ll receive three cards, some of which will have a blue number, indicating that the card cost of that card is 1 or 2 mana points. These cards are usually better, but if you decide to use one, you’ll not receive three random cards on the next turn. If the card costs you one mana, then you’ll receive two cards in the next round. The good news is that if you don’t use all the three cards you receive on that turn, you’ll have an extra mana point and therefore an additional card next turn. There are lots of cards with a variety of skills, which make each playthrough fairly unique.
After winning a battle, you’ll earn experience points to level up, as well as receiving loot in the form of upside down cards. You’ll usually have 3 minion cards and a spell or weapon cards. Occasionally, you’ll also have a treasure card which you can see automatically. For the other cards, you’ll have 2 free reveal cards each time you win a battle and must use and 3 flarestones. You can use one or all the flarestones to reveal the other cards if you wish, but bear in mind that it will take a few battles to get one back. After the chosen cards have been revealed and you are happy with them, you can add them to your deck cards.
It is a challenging game, and at the time of writing this review, I have not yet managed to get to the third floor, but I am thoroughly enjoying the game, that’s for sure.
Great artwork and the sound effects are good. I like the gamepedia library where you can see all the cards you have already found or unlocked, as well as those yet to be discovered. There is a huge amount of replayability and it will take you time to figure out the winning combinations. I must say that it can be frustrating, especially when facing a boss who has 50 hit points and takes four tiles on the grid. I was close once! A solid early access title.
Positives:
~~~~~~~

+ Great artwork
+ A good number of units, spells and weapon cards
+ Good variety of enemies
+ Fun to play and challenging
+ Great replay-ability
+ Achievements

Negatives:
~~~~~~~~
- No trading cards as yet
- Can be frustrating at times
Choose your deck cards, be a hero and dive straight into Spellsword Cards: DungeonTop. I am hooked!
Well, I just installed the game today, and played for a little over an hour, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. A lot of games have come out recently trying to duplicate Slay the Spire, and often they seem like just a clone with a new coat of paint.
Spellsword Cards seems inspired by The Spire, but has it’s own play style that adds board positioning and strategy to card building, and has a unique game experience that should serve it well. I have high hopes for the game going forward, and will update this review as time goes on.
One improvement this game makes over Slay the Spire is in the graphics department, which is really my only real complaint with STS. The graphics of Spellsword remind me of Darkest Dungeon or Deep Sky Derelicts, which is a good thing, and there is no stupid looking giant whale that you have to talk to! (Sorry Spire).
I'm editing my review now that I've tried the Mage class and have more hours into the game.
Is This Game For You?
If you like deckbuilders (like Slay the Spire) you should pick this one up. It's well worth the asking price and is very polished for an Early Access release. There are a lot of deckbuilders running around these days and this one stands out from the rest.
Early Access:
The game has plenty of content to justify Early Access. I've beat the game twice using the Warrior class (both decks) but I haven't managed to beat the game using the Mage class yet. There are 3 main dungeon levels and some variation to the bosses. There is a good amount of variation to the cards as well. The game does have some balance issues but it isn't bad. I think the devs understand this and that is the main reason for Early Access.
TLDR: The game feels finished content wise. I look forward to some balancing.
The Warrior Class:
This is the beginner class, and it does that job well. Maybe too well. I managed to beat the game my third try with the basic deck and again on my 6th try with the harder deck (going the harder rounds in the dungeon as well).
TLDR: The Warrior class might be too easy
The Mage Class:
This class is advanced class. I quite like the way it plays. I haven't beat the game with it yet. I'm not sure if I'm just bad or if there are balance issues. I'll keep playing to see if I can figure that out. Either way this class is really fun to play.
TLDR: Hard but really fun
Mana:
Other reviews have talked about the Mana mechanic. Basically, your Mana is how many cards you draw. Some cards us Mana to play them but some can just be placed for free. I see other reviews mentioning spamming all your free cards. I can see what they mean. I honestly think the Warrior class needs a bit of a rework in this regard (There just isn't any cost to playing all your cards so the strategy feels more board focused than card focused). However, I actually like the way Mana works with the Mage class. Often you end up discarding minions to get Mana for your spells. The mechanic works well here.
TLDR: There are issues with the Mana mechanic in the Warrior class but it seems to work well with the Mage class.
Is It As Good As Slay the Spire?
I had to put this in. You can't make a deckbuilder in 2020 without being compared to STS. I'm a huge STS fan. I've beaten STS with all the classes. I bought the game the day it came out (in Early Access) and was part of their original Thunderclap campaign (campaign for getting attention on social media). I personally like this game more. Having a board really helps me feel like I have more control of the randomness. Some people will like STS more and I can understand that. It is a bit easier to pick up and play. This has a bit more moving pieces each turn an so that can be tiring. I enjoy it though. Hopefully, this helps you decide.
TLDR: I like it more than STS
The Name?
The game's name is absolutely terrible. I can't forget that, though.
The game is a very interesting take on the deckbuilding roguelike genre. It is very polished for an EA and the experience flows nicely and quickly. This doesn't mean the game is not deep, on the contrary I had to think hard and strategize in order to proceed. If you play mindlessly it will kick your ass quickly.
I also liked the graphics and the audio department.
Fun and challenging!
Not as fun as Slay the Spire (yet) but I have to say this is an interesting title, has a potential to become really good strategy game.
I have played couple of hours but definitely will play more.
