- Voller Controller-Support ohne Probleme

Im so glad unique games like this can still exist in todays bloated and bland triple A space. Im loving my time with this so far! The story and atmosphere is dark and mysterious and keeps me wanting more. The combat is simple yet engaging, the voice acting is mostly good. The game is definitely not without jank, like texture pop-ins and wonky animations but I kinda feel that adds to its charm. Absolutely worth playing!

Yes its janky, yes the animations look kinda scuffed, yes i fucking love it. the setting, the whole detective system, the flaws, it seems llike they had a crackhead idea and decided to actually do something with it and the result is Thaumathurge, a lovely, decently voice acted RPG. Its 30 bucks, if you have them spare, you will not waste them on this game

Initial impressions are good. If you are a fan of Disco Elysium or Spiders games, this feels like a cross between the two.

The graphics are solid, and the writing is EXCELLENT. Control support is well done, and besides the UI being slightly small, it plays great on a TV.

The game splits its focus into two pieces; investigation and combat. While neither are particularly complex, they aren't too simple either. Investigation may feel thin at first, but the dialogue and writing are very enjoyable. Combat, too, is very fast to understand the mechanics but there is enough variation that unlocks as you play to maintain interest.

(Obviously after my low play time I can't fully estimate the game length, but it seems perhaps the short side for the price.)

If you like historical fantasy and RPGs, this is a great one for you.

I have not had the pleasure, and sometimes not the desire, to try many titles of the “detective” nature, such as the famous L.A. Noire, which I have not played and at this point I doubt I will. And the thing is that I am not particularly hooked by the mundane, I need the story to have some supernatural, fantastic, or science fiction aspect, however slight it may be. The Thaumaturge, to my good fortune, opts to go fully into the occult and magic, setting us in a world where the salutors, esoteric and mysterious creatures, live around humans, but hide behind a veil that only powerful magicians can see through. Putting ourselves in the shoes of Wiktor, a traveling thaumaturge, we'll have to unravel conspiracies, pry secrets, make choices of ambiguous morality, and give the occasional beating to evildoers along with our ghostly creatures. But remember, we must be prepared to bear the consequences of our actions.

The story is set in a tumultuous 1905, and we follow the adventure of Wiktor Szulski, who is traveling in search of a cure for his affliction. His ailment is most unusual, being more of a spiritual nature, as he is losing his connection with Upyr, the salutor with whom he has established a contract in his youth. His journey leads him to a "miracle worker", Grigori Rasputin, who may have the solution to his problems. Eventually, we arrive in Warsaw, and in addition to the main narrative we get to enjoy different plots through the back streets of the city.

While I really enjoyed The Thaumaturge, I must admit that both the story and some of the side quests have some noticeable ups and downs. At times the narrative is exquisite, and suddenly there are outcomes or events that are a bit off-putting. For example, a certain scene with an attack on the port felt very strange, but I can't delve into it due to spoilers. It's as if the game is a very well polished sphere, and any blemishes are too noticeable. With this I want to make it clear that even though these downs are present, the rest is very enjoyable and makes you forgive the occasional slip up.

The gameplay goes hand in hand with the narrative aspect, as it goes deeper with an elaborate and interesting system of choices. To begin with, we’ll have a perception skill, where our Thaumaturge will be able to “recognize” the environment in search of clues, something similar to the "Witcher sense". Gathering the essences scattered around the area, we'll be able to make a conclusion, and thus unlock new routes of dialogue for the conflict at hand. Of course, just as we can open paths, we can close others depending on our actions.

This element is very enjoyable, as The Thaumaturge encourages exploration, especially because the clues needed for a conversation can be not only nearby, but also hidden behind a conversation with another NPC; and sometimes we'll have multiple objectives to follow in parallel! Which can result in different endings for the same mission. Adding to this, some NPC will remember our decisions, affecting future encounters, some missions have time limits, so you have to be attentive, and we'll also have a system that revolves around our "mark of pride". The mark is the trait that defines us, and some options will require a higher level of pride to be able to select them, although honestly some make you hesitate to choose them because they tend to be, well, very proud answers.

At the same time we'll have to take into account our parameters, with a very simple leveling system that revolves around the salutors we have at our disposal. We'll have four “dimensions”, being Mind, Heart, Word and Deed; and some clues will require a certain level in one of these categories to reveal their true meaning. Each dimension is governed by different salutors, and as we'll only have Upyr at the beginning, we'll have to be on the lookout for wild salutors to tame and obtain new abilities. Some of these, both ours and the creatures', will help us in combat, which is presented to us in a classic turn-based system. All in all, it’s not very complex.

Thanks to our perception, we can anticipate what our enemies will do, visualizing the rounds and when each one will act. We'll have several attacks available, and passives that we can add to them before combat, to give a slight customization to the movements. But we must also pay attention to the concentration of each enemy, a row of diamonds that when broken cancels the current action, and allows us to execute our final blow. It should be noted that this also applies to us and our own concentration.

As I mentioned earlier, it doesn't have a lot of complexity, but it's a nice addition to the game, particularly the fights against wild salutors, which feel a bit more interactive. The only thing I didn't really like was that it can be brroken very easily, and that it applies that system where our actions are canceled when our target is defeated, instead of passing them on to the next standing contender. Besides this, some fights seemed unnecessary to me, a bit forced. At the end of the day, it's entertaining, especially for the animations of the salutors in the middle of the fight, which give a lot of style to the moment.

The visuals in The Thaumaturge aren't bad at all, the streets of Warsaw feel alive, traversed by NPC doing their own thing in the background, but somewhat dreary to properly stick to the setting. The character designs, especially faces, are somewhat repetitive, but the salutor are cool and very unique, plus we can dress Wiktor in different variations of his outfit. The soundtrack is very fitting to the era, and the fight song stuck with me for days. There is not much to criticize regarding the audiovisual section, it is very good!

All in all, The Thaumaturge is a very interesting narrative work, with some details that, although questionable, are forgiven thanks to the overall quality of the title. The combat is a plus, but its obvious strong point is in the dialogues. I should mention that it has several endings, and I emphasize that you should take your decisions carefully, as you might regret the conclusion you reach... I speak from experience, yes. I loved immersing myself in this mystical adventure, putting myself at the feet of an unusual “wizard” and his spectral creatures, and although it could certainly be improved in several aspects, I think they have created something very interesting!
