Still one of the best stealth games to this day (the other being its sequel). If you are making a stealth game use this and the metal age as an example of what you should try to achieve.

Both a classic stealth-em-up and a classic immersive sim; no game (other than The Dark Mod) since the dissolution of Looking Glass Studios has ever come close to emulating the experience the original Thief games present.

P.S. Make sure to install TFix for this and Thief 2 in order to fix the cutscenes and some engine bugs.

Classic game from the 90's.
But thing is, how did they made this game so good?, i'm always impressed with the before 2000 games like Fallout, Half life, and this one... THIEF.
It's amazing, mechanics, story, music, enemys, ambientation, it's so sick.
The only bad thing i can see is that i had to downlaod some patches to enjoy the game.

I bought it for less than 50 cents, it worthes the price for real. THIS is a REAL STEALTH game WOW
Anything else i rate 10/10.

AMAZING

Looking Glass Studios really knew how to create atmosphere. Even with the outdated graphics and simplistic NPCs, still one of the best games ever in the stealth genre. As a fantasy fan, this game nails the Pagan/magical vibe as well. Loving playing it again!

This is an incredibly old-school game that does the stealth genre more justice than anything that came after it; its audio mechanics are absolutely fantastic despite its old age (heck, I don't think any game made today really does what Thief does in the way of sound emulation).

Now, Thief is a LONG game, and even though the navigation and level design are confusing, the rewards are true when you finish each level, which is really a game of its own.

If you're into the stealth genre or into playing older classics, this one's a go!

I played this game sooo many years ago and despite it's age it is still unmatched in terms of it's atmospheric 1st person stealth and sneakiness. Nice to see it still playable on modern computers although I thoroughly recommend implementing the TFix1.27 patch (which can be found here: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733). I downloaded this, found the home directory for the steam game version and installed it there. Works perfectly - enables full screen rendition and a whole bunch of other 'fixes' which only add to the performance and experience.
As ever with the Thief series - not for shoot'em up/action junkies - combat is deadly and you will die! Quietly, and as Golum would say, 'Sneaksie little hobbitses' is the way to go. Enjoy if you've not played it before or enjoy again if you have!
10/10 for its originality and atmospherics, 10/10 for the TFix1.27 patch, and 10/10 for steam for keeping such a classic alive and kicking!

First, you will have to mod the game with TFix Lite to be properly played in modern systems.

Very interesting game. The atmosphere is amazing, really gives you the feel of running around in the shadows somewhere at night. There's a certain 'realism' to the way you and your character interact with the world. You are forced to play the way this character would actually act, you HAVE to be stealthy.

The main problems with this game is that you have to quick save regularly, since sometimes the guards spot you for no fault of your own. Sometimes it's impossible to know where to go. There's these segments where you are forced to attack enemies. But I mean, it's a 1998 game. What did you expect.

I was 25 yrs old when This game released, and it quickly became a favorite of mine. Back in '98 Thief was quite an impressive game. With it's 3D graphics and stealth mechanics I became that lowly cat burglar, sneaking through a medieval steam-punk land. Today Thief still is a pretty solid game. It has cool environments to explore, and a fun yet a bit frustrating at first, combat system. Also some great cheesy NPC dialog to laugh at along the way. This game is loads of fun. I know I haven't gave a great review of Thief. That then gives you the chance to grab a copy and explore a wonderful and immersive old-school gaming masterpiece.

I don't think it's exaggerating to call this the Citizen Kane of video games. Don't pay attention to my hours on steam, I owned the original CD version of this game and have spent 100s of hours playing the original, fan missions, with difficulty mods, etc... Still better than most games ever made.

Having played this for the first time in 2021, I can safely say Thief is kinda unmatched as a gaming experience. There's really nothing else quite like this game, and it's fantastic. In a unique fantasy/steampunkish word, you play as Garrett, and undertake a variety of jobs for a number of clients, while uncovering an overarching mystery you find yourself embroiled in.

The game is structured in linear missions, each taking up to an hour or even more to complete on the highest difficulty. And I would actually recommend playing on Expert for most missions, since the difficulty here is more about the necessary objectives. From ancient tombs to opulent homes, there's a nice variety of levels requiring different things from the player, with some missions even changing gears midway through. I also really like that killing guards is discouraged. You can can knock them unconscious, but if they die on higher difficulties? It's over. You fail. Compared to more recent stealth titles, that's refreshing.

But what really makes Thief shine to me is the combination of the sound design and atmosphere. This game just... damn. It nails it perfectly, and this is a game from 1998. Each walkable surface has a different volume value applied to it, which guards may be more likely to notice. Never before has a game made me see a metal or granite floor and be completely filled with dread. But luckily you have the tools to deal with these situations. Rope arrows, moss arrows and flashbombs are just the tip of the iceberg, honestly, and you can combine these in a way to solve the missions any way you like. Loud surface? You can silence it with moss. Need to reach a higher vantage point? Rope arrows allow you to climb up.

I still need to play the sequel, but from this one title alone I'm sold on these classics. And that's not even mentioning the dedicated fan community, still to this day committed to creating fan missions for these games. I've barely scratched the surface of those and I'm excited for more.

All in all, if you enjoy the stealth genre, this is a game you *need* to play. Even if you're not, this one might win you over. It's that special.

I was a kid running messages...

[89/100]

Zitat:
I wonder if he reads them, or it’s just for show?

Zitat:
Since I’m in here, I might as well pick up something for myself

Zitat:
Tombs with piped in music, how classy.

Yes, I do recommend it. The design and originality on the levels are brilliant, there are many interesting ways to achieve your objectives. At some point, I just started bunny hopping around and trying to knock out anything that got in my way because that's the funniest one to me.

This version is called Gold because it's the definitive version of The Dark Project, it includes new missions that I must admit not being a fan of as they are not as enjoyable as others, one of them is incredibly tedious (Thieves' Guild). I highly recommend installing the TFix community patch along with changing the controls to a more WASD classic layout for a better experience. Got it from Thief Collection bundle that I bought during a nice sale in November.

Thief is often called the father of first-person stealth games, and the fact that it still manages to make you unconsciously hold your breath while you sneak past a searching guard speaks volumes about it.

While its often labyrinthine level design and the lack of a 'proper' map may be off-putting to players used to quest markers and similar forms of handholding, Thief rewards those who plan ahead and memorize the areas they pass through with tight-fitting, high-adrenaline sneaking action.

One of my favorite games of all time. I wasn't alive when this came out but can see how this specific game can change an entire genre.

The atmosphere is what got me when I first played and is still a large component as to why I am still playing. The world is dark and gloomy, a world like that of the dark ages stirred thoroughly in a time of industrial revolution and mixed with more than a hint of magic; it's a very unique world. The game is not a horror game but, whether or not the developers intended, it has horror elements and can be very creepy at many different times. The game has a thrill to it, and the elements that make up the game support that feel.

The game has an interesting story with fantastic voice actors, especially the main character, Garrett's, voice actor.
Garrett starts as a freelance thief and over the course of each mission, he gets in deeper with bigger people.
The story evolves and I believe is very well told, as in the story itself is told very effortlessly in each cutscene before each mission.

Each mission starts with an item screen where the loot you collect in the previous level, or a selected amount if you just start, can be used to purchase items helpful to your mission. The items you can get may be different types of arrows that help you in different types of ways.
For example, a moss arrow will soften the floor into moss allowing you to traverse it with no sound so no one nearby can hear you. Or the water arrow which you can use to extinguish torches and candles so that you have the upper advantage in sneaking through the shadows. Or even the rope arrow, an arrow that can only attach to wood surfaces and when it does it drops a rope down to the floor directly underneath it. The rope arrow is needed to reach certain areas in which Garrett can't access alone.
The stealth is (obviously) the main focus to this game with interaction with guards (etc.) taking a back seat. The game uses a smart detection system and a small section on the bottom of the screen to tell whether or not you are being seen in any way and if you are hiding well in the shadows. It's bright when you are easily noticed and near black when completely hidden with shades in between to indicate your current stealth condition.

The maps are grand especially considering the age of the game. Each map is unique and each objective within each mission is a joy to experience. Putting the game in expert allows for more objectives within each mission and will have you scouring throughout the entire map to complete them. The maps being huge don't feel empty in any way (unless you knock out/kill guards). Expert adds the challenge of never being able to kill anyone which makes this game a real treat because you have to figure out ways to maneuver around the people you're trying to avoid.

I recommend using at least two save games to save simultaneously just in case you save in a spot that leaves you for dead every time you load it. It will save you a lot of time and headache. I definitely recommend the Thief Gold HD Texture Mod as well, it updates the game in a beautiful way. Though the game's original textures may be dated, I still think the game looks nice despite that, but how you play is all dependent on how you are as a gamer.

The game is very much worth the low price and if you can find it even cheaper then it's even more worth it.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

I started with 3th game, so it was hard to play this one at first. It's more difficult, I had to use quick load often. Overall once I've started to be more careful than before, I had a lot of fun playing it. The story is great, I'm glad I decided to properly introduce myself to Thief games. I'm using texture mod and TFix so the game looks great. I will definitely play it again in the future. Great game :)

IMO, this is the BEST game ever made. It's the ORIGINAL from 1998 (HD Graphics mod available free online). It is vastly different from THIEF (Last Gen console game) because it was created by a now defunct studio called Looking Glass Studios. They also made the sequel, Thief 2 (second best game ever made).
In short- PLAY THIS DAMN GAME!!!

Must Play Experience

Thief 1 is an absolute classic no matter what kind of gamer you happen to be.
It is more difficult than your usual game, but there are plenty of walkthroughs to support you
if you need the help. This game also has some nice graphics mods that add polish
to the old game engine, which helps a lot.

I think I've finished this game about 4 times so far and have enjoyed it everytime.
It's super immersive and has an interesting story to go with it.
You are basically a master thief that works for a secret organization.
You are given missions to explore ruins or wealthy mansions for hidden treasure and secrets.
Along the way you unravel a bigger plot that eventually dictates the story in a good way.

The graphics especially with the graphics mod are clean and crisp.
The audio from the ambient music to sound effects are one of the best in a game period.
Both help immerse you in the game mechanics of being a sneaky master thief.
The game play is very stealth oriented and involves sneaking around enemies rather
than going head first into battles.

It might sound boring but it really is amazing.
You are trying to explore and steal treasures without getting caught and it has a ton
of tension as a result. All in all I say this is a must play for anyone who is a fan
of video games. A must have experience no matter your preferences in gaming.
The game gets a solid 10 out of 10 from me.
It can be difficult but you can get help from walkthroughs if you need the help, so no problem.

I hope you will try the game and enjoy it!

Still the gold standard of stealth games. No other game comes close. If you are a fan of stealth and immersive sims, you simply HAVE to play this game.

However...

The Steam version is not great right out of the box. It has had no support for modern systems. You need to do a little work to get this game up to snuff. First, download the TFix mod. This mod is essential. It removes persistent bugs, adds a little polish, but most importantly, allows the game to run at modern resolutions. This is really the only mod you need, but if you want to give it a little more of a graphical overhaul, there are two mods worth mentioning. NecroAge mod is a graphical overhaul which makes the world feel darker and grittier, including sharper textures, without changing too much of the original game. It looks great and is the one I use. The other is Bentraxx's HD Mod which is the best way to play if you want the game to look as good as possible. It redoes all the textures, adds moving vegetation, new effects, etc. I've played it before but prefer NecroAge as HD Mod takes too much out of the original.

So buy it, play it, then dream about it.

Best stealth game ever, period.

Make sure to install Tfix and the NecroAge texture pack as well as SoundEnhancements to get the best experience. Go for Thief Gold HDMod for a more modern graphical approach.

Lastly, try the FM's most of them are very high quality and work well with the mentioned texture mods.

One of the most immersive games of all times. I played this game in my childhood and after replaying it now, I can say that Thief still stands today even with the outdated graphics.
+ Non-linear and complex level designs that forces you to be smart about which way to pick.
+ Excellent sound effects and atmospheres.
+ Encourage exploration and preparation by having a map drawn by the Main Character, based on intel and tips he has collected.
+ Interesting story and lore
+ Excellent voice acting

On compatibility notes:
You need to download the unofficial patch (TFix 1.27) to improve graphics compatibility, resolution, and cutscenes. I wish that Square Enix include this patch officially on steam.

Thief: Gold is a classic stealth game from 1999. It consists of Thief: the dark project from 1998, some modifications and some new missions. Set in a medieval setting with steampunk elements, Thief revolutionized the stealth genre by using darkness and sound gameplay mechanics. Since Thief hasn't been updated for a while. Many recommend to install TFix: unofficial patch for Thief1/Gold.

pros
+ oldschool stealth mechanics with darkness meter and sounds
+ dark and gritty atmosphere
+ charming oldschool graphics
+ many weapons and tools at your disposal
+ guards have interesting dialogues

cons
- cutscenes don't work for many users without installing the fan patch
- inconsistent mission quality
- non-human enemies are less fun
- confusing level design at times

Verdict

Thief: Gold is still impressive and the stealth mechanics have held up fine. The game is the most fun when the map is full of human guards and is featuring normal floors illuminated by some torches that give you various options on how to procede. While later levels filled with non-human enemies, loud floors and laterns is less fun and offers fewer stealth strategies. Recommended to stealth fans.

Stealth masterpiece straight from the 90s with it's ambiance that almost makes it a horror-ish game.

It still holds up fairly well. You can mod it too, if it gets too rough around the edges for you.

It's a no-brainer to give the original Thief a try.

Truly revolutionary first person stealth adventure. I'm not blinded by nostalgia, because it was my first time playing through, and I can easily say it was incredible. Game is moderately challenging and some levels can be frustrating but if you have a little bit of patience it is not gonna be a big problem. For running game on modern systems just install TFix unofficial patch. Must play for every fan of a genre.

Pros:
- Complex, non-linear levels;
- Outstanding sound design;
- Mysterious atmosphere;
- Unique mix of steampunk and dark fantasy;
- Variety in objectives and locations;
- Cool gadgets;
- Interesting difficulty system;

Cons:
- Some levels is little bit too maze-like;
- All non human enemies is annoying;

Stealth games are always fun, being basically a more action-oriented puzzle game. Of course, due to age, I was a bit worried the actual mechanics would be rather clunky when compared to more recent tiles, but against all odds, the game manages to pull off a very complete experience. From dark spots to hide in shadows to enemies doing effective searches when made aware of your presence, to even different types of ground doing different levels of sound based on how you're walking on top of them, from completely silent moss to the very loud tiles. Even the combat side was better than expected, although still a bit rough since you could either die in two hits or stun-lock your enemies until they were dead. Most of the game's harder difficulty making into so you had to go through entire levels without killing anymore made this not very noticeable, though.

The level design is also great, with the first few missions being really linear, working to give you a base for how to tackle your objectives, learn mechanics, and get used to your tools. And the later ones become more open and expansive, leaving you to search around for loot, ways t complete your tasks, and find a way to deal with patrols. My final campaign time was just above eleven hours, but taking into account all the reloads I played for triple that and didn't feel bored in the least. The way the story is presented is also quite nice, flowing in a way that made me appreciate where the game started and where it ended up.

As for cons, there are actually a couple of them. The first is the actual controls. While I appreciate how complete they are for the experience, with buttons assigned to walking, running, walking backward, leaning, and all other kinds of movements make it so you have an extra level to worry about while moving around. But this is system requires quite e while to get used to since most of the placements are awkward. Like leaning forwards, which comes in hand in a lot of places, being alt + shift + W.

The other one is a more of Steam port version. The first time I booted the game I actually thought only the in-level stuff was part of the presentation. Then looking around I found out there were actual scenes between missions explaining why you were doing each job as well as the game story. I easily fixed it by installing a third-party patch, but it also seems like you can just make it so you run the game as an administrator and it also works. While this doesn't make the game unplayable, like other games, it still not ideal that you have to do extra work to play the game in its perfect state besides simply installing.

Even so, the game is really fun and stands up really well even today. If you enjoy stealth games then this one is an actual classic you shouldn't miss.

taffer simulator 1998 10/10 would taff about again

Don't play this if you want to enjoy stealth sections from other games, for me at least, every time I play a stealth section outside of Thief I end up thinking 'I wish this was Thief' at some point. In 1998, this game was an insane technical feat that sent Looking Glass studios way over budget; it shows the first example of modern day stealth game AI, with lots of different states and realistic use of their senses. The sounds are all very high quality, and the game's sound system is just... you need to experience it yourself to understand. You can pinpoint enemy movements from their footsteps and vocal musings, and even guess how big the room they are in is through the echoing. The company that made held the rights to the software used to achieve this effect was absorbed a while after Thief released and the software hasn't been available to game devs since. You'll need to install a patch to get the sound system fully running on modern hardware though, there are guides for renabling EAX audio on Steam. Thief is an eargasm with headphones even if you don't have EAX enabled.
I don't know if this will apply to everyone, but the Cathedral levels of Thief are the scariest experiences I've ever had in a game. The enemies aren't scary at all to look at, they are just a bit more detailed than Half Life 1 and that's not saying much. But the sounds they make as they search for you induce a feeling of dread and fear of the unknown- the latter feeling comes into play more as you go later into the game as the levels gradually get weirder. Hurrying to pick a lock whilst the echoing moans of a zombie or the calls of a corrupted Hammerite to 'join us' draw closer left me dashing through the door and slamming it shut once I was done with the lock. Garret(the player character) isn't much of a fighter as the title would suggest, and whilst he can take on a lone guard with his sword or bow, multiple guards or supernatural enemies will wipe the floor with you- even if you do triumph, health recovery items are often scarce and both the bodies and blood left behind will inform other enemies of your presence(bodies can be hidden and bloodstains can be removed with water arrows, although they're a limited resource).
Speaking of water arrows, they're a really cool feature- you can shoot them at flames to put them out, allowing you to potentially sneak through a now darkened area. There are lots of different types of arrows, fire arrows for lighting torches or taking out a tough enemy(limited), moss arrows for deafening the noise you make from walking across tiled or metal floors, rope arrows for opening up alternate routes through a level or making an escape from alerted enemies, gas arrows for knocking out enemies from a distance(very limited) and last but unfortunately least, noisemaker arrows for making a distraction(they're a bit inconsistent and you can always throw something on the ground to similar effect). You can buy items between levels using the loot you collected in the previous level or find them within levels. Even though Garret is not a strong character by any means, the sword combat is good, much better than in the Elder Scrolls games and most FPS games (if they have swords), but worse than something like Mount & Blade or a modern medieval set game. With some skill, luck and perhaps quite a lot of savescumming, you can fight and defeat a corrupted Hammerite(much faster at running than player, attacks very quickly) using mines, fire arrows, and your sword.
Most of the levels(aside from the first) have a massive scale allowing for lots of different approaches and a lot of exploration. You won't always have an ideal map to work with, you get what Garret would realistically be able to obtain, whether it be the sketch of a servant, out of date, or made out of cryptic symbols, which makes navigation a challenge unlike in most modern games with quest markers etc. This is a refreshing break from the handholding of modern games and a boost to immersioon most of the time, but on some levels it can get you lost or stuck. On one level in the underground casino, to open a secret door you need to get through to proceed, you must spin a roulette table. I figured this out by messing around but it is noted on a piece of paper within the casino, however, I think it was a bit too cryptic, but not quite Raiders of the Lost Ark for the Atari VCS cryptic. Fortunately most of the game is free from bad level design like this and all of the levels are very memorable.
In conclusion, this game is really worth a try considering its affordability and status as a not just a time capsule but a great game on its own. Listening to guard banter and the dopamine overdose which is the sound effect of your blackjack hitting an enemy on the hit to knock them out, never gets old. Thief 2 is also really good but 'successor' games such as Dishonoured and the Thief reboot just don't capture a lot of what made the original Thief games amazing. The story is worth hanging around for and the cutscenes have a real style to them.
(install TFix to allow cutscenes to work and an EAX patch for the best sound experience possible)

Really good stealth game. Unlike modern titles, this game's got good challenge, in that enemies can both see AND hear you depending on light and floor (although the ai does occasionally fail to see you in well lit rooms). Difficulty actually changes the game and gives you more objectives and stuff rather than make enemies op, like in modern titles. It's pretty fun to sneak around and steal stuff all over the different levels, and you have a bunch of neat tools to use. However, despite running well, the cutscenes do not play for some reason, which means you'll have no context for how the missions connect, and thus can't experience the story. Get this.

10/10

I Stan the Atmospheric Concussion Sim

I probably said this about Dark Souls but I'll say it here too: I can't really get into this, because I could write a dissertation on this game (let alone the series) without realising or stopping for more coffee. Once I start, there's no stopping me, and the resulting word salad would need more editing in post than a marvel movie.

Here's the deal: this game is one of the most immersive sneaky experiences you can have, and it doesn't stop there. For one, the ambient soundtrack is phenomenal, and the Brosius' work on voice direction, sfx and ambience are unrivalled in the genre to this day.

It's always amazed me that both atmosphere and stealth mechanics hold up in a 20-year-old game, and not only that, but nothing nowadays comes close to the level of immersion you get from the game. I think that's due to the lack of fancy emergent mechanics: you WASD, you swing your donking stick and you donk dudes. There's no cut to third-person or even first-person animations where your character takes over and does some cool junk with an orchestral sting. You click, you swing, the guy goes oof, and he's down. Control is never taken from you, and nothing is embellished: everything you do, you do for yourself. I think that's one of the key reasons the game is so immersive, and that goes for the bows, swords, and inventory items you use. It's unceremonious, much like it would be for realsies.

Second, the game isn't afraid to be itself. LG were always huge innovators, that was kinda their thing, and it shows in this. Not only did they nail down the whole stealth thing, but they took it to a new level with their supernatural twists and magicy punky setting. They weren't content to just let you sneak through a series of mansions, but I guess got bored with their own innovation and innovated on top of it, subverting their own brand new mechanics halfway through the game that debuted them. By The Sword, you're used to sneaking through mansions and you think you know what's up, but they turn it on its head and suddenly you're walking through giant rooms, upside down rooms, impossible spaces, too-big gardens that don't line up with your map. It creeps you out and confuses you, and it never really stops from that point on. They even start you off with the pretense of a tomb raiding mission that turns suddenly into a mansiony mission.

Cragscleft, The Bonehoard, The Cathedral, they're all great locations that have you doing new stuff each time, interacting with strange, new supernatural entities and leaving you to figure out how to deal with them. It was scary at the time, and it's more than a little unnerving now, sneaking around with jabbering ghosts and shambling zombies. Sure it's aged, but it's still so tense at times. It's no Alien Isolation, but in 20 years, Alien Isolation might be no Alien Isolation.

Whether you're exploring fancy-pants mansions or catacombs, or anything in between, Thief excels at what it sets out to do. Despite the wide range of mission settings and enemies you can encounter, it all feels tight and justified, focused and driven. Planned and executed, like a good book.

It's a great game. Great ambience, great gameplay, great level design, great story, great variety. I'm stopping myself by force. 10/10

Thief is a pretty good first person stealth game, even for its age. Controls can easily be remapped to a modern WASD control scheme. I had a lot of fun getting lost in the mansions and environments it put me in through the course of the campaign, but I did need a walkthrough almost every level because I didn't want to spend hours and hours wandering around. The level design and maps could be better and more concise, there's a lot of empty space to backtrack through if you get lost or miss objectives. I also kind of hated the later levels and the emphasis on combat. The combat in this game sucks, it's a stealth game after all, but the developers still decided to throw hoards of enemies at you and make you kill them all near the end. It wasn't scary or fun for me, just really annoying.

All that being said, I still really enjoyed parts of this game and think it's worth playing if you are a stealth fan. It really is great sneaking around somewhere, stealing everything, and getting out unnoticed. Taking down enemies and finding secret passageways were some of my favorite parts of the game.

Get TFix for modern resolutions and other bug fixes, this game worked great with TFix installed

Punti:
Grafica: -
Audio: 7
Comandi: 6
Difficoltà: 7/8

Pretty cool game and quite innovative for its time. There's a lot of freedom to beat levels in different ways which is pretty useful especially if you really aren't that good at stealth games, although its definitely best to stay hidden most of the time as its pretty much impossible to kill every enemy straight up as far as I can tell. There's a couple times in the game where you feel a bit lost and might have to look up a hint or two but otherwise not too bad. Great story also I never thought it'd get that crazy. 9/10

Now where to begin with Thief gold...

This is a game I've played since my early childhood (given I was only able to play the demo). The game was greatly immersive in the sense of the eerie sounds that would come up every time you pulled around a corner. The short content of the demo had me craving for more.
I decided to give it another go after purchasing the full version. The game is old but don't let the old graphics fool you, the game itself has a great plot/storyline, but it's also friendly enough to make it irrelevant if you simply just wanna play the game itself. It is the pioneer of modern stealth games giving the features of both noise and lighting. I love the game so much that I passed the game, then I found all the loot, then I beat it in expert mode, then I ransacked every corner of the game until i finally went exploring places the game did not intend for me to be!
TL;DR: Great stealth game! Great story!

This is a good game and I've enjoyed it very much even though I've never played it before.
But that's me, I enjoy good games no matter how outdated they play or look. However if you don't share this trait you will find this game boring, confusing, ugly and not very fun, which is completely understandable.

Most levels are plain and simple: get in, steal stuff, get out. While those were the most fun, there are a few that have more of a survival horror approach, those were fine too but I have to admit they got a bit out of hand near the end of the game.
How you complete the job is up to you and you have a variety of different tools at your disposal, for instance arrows that extinguish torches, arrows that shoot ropes, flash grenades, etc.
Playing on higher difficulties gives you additional objectives but also forbids you from killing people. I would still recommend playing on expert for the full experience.

Just get it. Download TFix to play in modern resolutions and fix a few bugs and you're golden. Thief is to stealth games as DOOM is to shooters, (MGS eat your heart out) and while some games have come close, I don't think any have surpassed it. No game will immerse you more, because there is no minimap, no yellow onscreen square to tell you where to go. You're just dropped in with whatever hand drawn map Garret could get ahold of and told to figure it out, and while that can lead to occasional frustration, very few games have level design this excellent. The story is actually very interesting, characters have believable motivations, and Garret may be one of the most likeable video game protagonists ever.

I only played a little Thief 2 back in the 90s so I came to this game with no nostalgia. What surprised me then is how tense and atmospheric it remains, proving that great writing and sound design never grow old.

There's some things you have to know going in:

1. Get TFix. It'll make the game run smoothly. I had fewer issues getting this 21 year old game to run than I have any game that came out even 5 - 10 years later.

2. You'll need to rebind your keys.

3. The pace of this game is very, very slow. Take your time. No need to rush.

4. You absolutely need to use your ears. A large portion of this game is predicated on listening for and identifying sounds for patrolling enemies.

5. It's okay to make use of all your saves, but don't forget to learn from your failures. It's definitely more enjoyable to play when you don't feel like you need to save every two minutes.

6. Guards have different alert statuses. This was easily the most frustrating part of the game until I understood what was happening. You'll carefully sneak up behind a patrolling guard and then WAP! he'll whip around and smack you with his sword like he knew you were there all along. If this is happening, the guard is on high alert (even if he appears to have returned to his normal patrol route), so just wait in the shadows for a couple of minutes and he'll return to a blackjackable state.

7. If your light meter is showing you're in the darkness, enemies can't see you unless they literally bump into you or they're VERY close AND on high alert. There are lots of little invisibility corners you can tuck yourself into to watch.

8. You can move absolutely silent by holding your slow walk key and stutter stepping forward. If you don't hear your footsteps, you aren't making noise.

9. Water arrows OP.

This is a very atmospheric game. Relax- don't rush it- and just enjoy it. I almost quit a few hours in because I was playing too aggressive and didn't understand a lot of the (poorly explained) mechanical necessities. But once I did, the game became way more enjoyable. While clearly dated, the ambiance and stealth gameplay still provide a unique experience. And the story is definitely interesting, with a charming and well-voice-acted main character.

You gonna need to be stealthy here, absolutely no way to be Rambo in Expert

I played Thief the first time of my life on Xbox 360 and its was the 2014 one, i’ve never touched the first one and they're impressive !

Thief Gold with Tfix is awesome, i can't believe it was released in the 90s
I mean for the gameplay cause the graphics is Tfix so...

That's a good game if you like stealth games, it's pretty old tho so gonna need to be open minded to understand the controls since it's the old school ones, but you can rebind them and Tfix have some premade binds

Can't wait to play Thief 2 and 3 now

A solid and very enjoyable game, even almost 22 years later. I never played this game before, and decided to force myself to beat the original three Thief games before I could play Thief 2014. The controls are a bit hellishly-dated right out the gate, but with enough tweaking (and through the help of some mods for both controls and graphics), I managed to make the game comfortably playable to the point where this one game is all that I have been playing lately.

Obviously, with this being a really old game, the AI and combat are not going to be the greatest, and you will encounter silly happenings in terms of bugs and odd scripts and so forth, but that hardly matters to me. This game still holds up great, even when compared to other stealth games like it from recent years. Definitely give this one a try, and it may grow on you just as fast as it did with me.

Get this and get the New Dark graphics mods and the game patched up... oh my word. This was one of my favourite games as a kid, although I couldn't complete it back then xD but with these mods it's truly astonishing. The level design is still to this day in 2020 better than almost any modern stealth game I can think of.. This shows how incredible and innovative games were back then, and how sadly predictable and lazy many are now. One of the greatest, genre defining games ever made.

Edit: I also completed it but due to modding the launcher it doesn't recognise it on steam ^^

Truly immersive to this day, with its legendary atmosphere and terrific sound design acting as a major component of the gameplay. Sprawling non-linear levels are accompanied by hand drawn maps, encouraging players to make their own sense of their surroundings and use real problem solving to tackle its dynamic objectives. Thief is extremely confident and restrained in design, offering valuable lessons for game developers in the modern day.

A stealth game with an amazing quality of design, aesthetics and environment. It can have some physical issues due to the game's old age, but you can (must) download an unofficial patch that basically polishes the game and fix practically all issues with keybindings and physics. The gameplay mechanics overall are solid ,the story starts as a typical thief tale, but as it goes on, it starts to get more serious and more intense, making you excited and more intrigued as each chapter unfolds, going through multiple events, becoming a really interesting and well done plot. For a 1999 game, I couldn't believe at first how incredibly well made it was and it still holds up for stealthy genre lovers nowadays.

Please note, I only just played this recently so there is no nostalgia here. This is 100% one of the most immersive gaming experiences I've ever had in my life. Very challenging and if you decide to really tackle this game without any guide/walkthrough or very very minimal online guidance, you'll find it to be a very satisfying time. Honestly, this game has shot itself up into my top 10 favorite games of all time, possibly even top 5-3. Can't wait to play 2 and 3 at this rate.

“It’s a rock. It’s what you asked for. Am I gonna get paid or not?”

What is there to say about Thief over two decades on that hasn’t already been said? It’s one of the best games ever made, if you’re into that sort of thing. I am, which might be why I’ve given it 66 hours of my life in the past five years. I came to Thief late. Really late. It’s strange, because it’s very much a game I’d have been Into when I was younger, but somehow it never showed up on my radar. I’m good with that – I fell deeply in love with it all the same and never looked back, and maybe, if you give it a chance, you will too.

Thief's the story of Garrett, a cynical master thief in a fantastical medieval city populated by religious zealots, corrupt lawmakers, and a debauched wealthy elite (so the rich, then). Garrett’s goal in this cutthroat world is simply to stay alive. His method? Steal from said zealots and lawmakers. Only Garrett has an unfortunate penchant for getting roped into dark conspiracies beyond his station, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll learn there’s more to the man’s harsh exterior than meets the eye.

The first game operates as something of a medieval noir, kicking into gear once Garrett takes a job from an elusive woman and her mysterious employer. It’s taut and well-written, and Garrett is a highly compelling protagonist; a wry, sceptical presence in a cruel, unforgiving world. There are a few animated cutscenes, but Thief's narrative is largely delivered by way of brilliant pre-mission briefings and their accompanying artwork. From these briefings to the hand-drawn maps, Thief's aesthetics weave quite a spell. I think if I had played Thief when I was younger, I might have tried emulating these narrative tricks during my modding years...

Built on Looking Glass Studio’s (RIP) The Dark Engine, Thief looked old before its time. But if you can forgive its dated appearance – perhaps even learn to love it – you’ll find a fascinating, complex world to explore from the shadows. There are vast, baroque mansions, labyrinthine crypts, and magical enclaves to infiltrate and strip of their valuables. These are large, often sprawling levels, with multiple possible approaches, and some of the level design is pretty ingenious. It’s a game made with an inventive wit and born of an incisive design philosophy.

You’ll likely need to install a fan-made patch to ensure the game remains stable, but the series has accumulated an enviable following, and there are some excellent and thorough configuration guides in the Steam community section. It’s quick and easy, so you won’t have to jump through too many hoops to get going.

Should you take the dive, I recommend playing on Hard or Expert difficulty. Along with increasing guard patrols and complicating your potential routes, they come with additional objectives that expand each level, meaning it’s the best way to experience the game to its fullest.

If you find Thief is your jam, you’ve plenty more of it ahead: there are two stunning sequels and a bounty of modifications – Shadows of the Metal Age in particular, a massive fan project, is a worthy companion piece to Thief and Thief II.

It should be your jam, especially if you enjoy leaning. There’s really no other game that lets you lean left, right, and forward like Thief. They don’t exist. This is lean heaven, I’m telling you. Lean. Heaven.

A predecessor to many stealth and first-person immersive games that delivers in many aspects and is still so unique even todays standarts. I highly recommend modding the game and changing the key bindings to your liking. The only thing I disliked were the last few levels where the difficulty spike and stealth become a secondary. Nevertheless a fantastic game.

I remember playing that game for the first time back in 2005 when I was still a kid. I was so afraid of everything that I kept replaying the training mission and did not want to dive into the missions. My dad had to sit next to me, guide me and tell me that there is nothing to be afraid of so I could play the game. Even though I never managed to beat it back then, I spent countless hours in it, just trying out new techniques and growing out of fear. Later on, I picked TDS and I did not look back into Thief 1 that often. I played the game for the last time around 2013 up until couple of days ago until I saw that it's on sale. Immediately bought it and my first impression was - what a fucking masterpiece. For a 22 year old game, it has aged on a level that I can compare only with Half Life. Everything in the game - the voice acting, the soundtrack, the brilliant weapon mechanics, the innovative stealth mechanics for its time - it's hard to believe that people could produce games like this back in 1998 when you see the current crap that gets developed each year. It's a shame the gaming industry full of money grabbing whores went all in for the cash and stopped caring for the people. Can we even enjoy a singleplayer game these days with a story and gameplay as strong as in Thief 1, and not being full of microtransactions, DLC's and god knows what else.

In regards to the rating:
An absolute 10/10.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#327 out of 560)... it's time for Thief.

Thief is the ultimate classic PC stealth game. Boasting exceptional nonlinear level design, complex mechanics, and robust guard AI, it offers one of the most immersive stealth experiences in the medium. The story can be a bit wonky, and in this bizarre year 2020 I'd be lying if I said everything had aged well -- levels are largely barren and can be a bit difficult to orient yourself in due to the proliferation of similar-looking low-poly assets -- but even so the original Thief remains one hell of a game.

This review will cover both Thief: Gold and Thief 2: The Metal Age as they are similar in nature, equally well-aged, and arguably superior to most modern 1st person stealth games.

There is something about these low-poly games of old that modern games simply can't beat! The Thief series had a solid start with these titles which has sadly been abandoned in more recent iterations of the series. The atmosphere, mechanics, and gameplay feel original and unmatched, keeping the games interesting throughout. I personally don’t recall playing a stealth game that comes close to matching the authenticity that this series provides. That being said, playing Thief is like trying to enjoy a fine wine that not everyone will appreciate. There are times where the game feels clunky… something like trying to control a toddler towards an unknown objective all while the AI performs some questionable maneuvers to catch you. In addition, both games will need to be patched to run properly on modern systems as they are over 20 years old (which can be annoying and not always successful as I learned with Thief: Deadly Shadows). Nonetheless, these games are often on sale for less than $1.00 USD each and make for a more than memorable experience at that nominal price.

I recommend it this series for those who love stealth games and can either appreciate/overlook the aged graphics and quirky moments!

Not only one of the best stealth games of all time, but one of the best games of all time period. Rich atmospheric soundtrack, a detailed sound propagation system that gives footstep a unique noise depending on the surface walked on, dynamic light and shadow system that allows players to manipulate light sources to stay hidden, changing the difficulty level adds more enemies and objectives, and much more. The graphics look like straight booty but this can be corrected with mods. Some of the levels are giant mazes which is annoying but the map and compass help somewhat. I highly recommend TFIx and Thief HD to bring the game to modern standards. Stone cold classic !

Started playing this game a few years ago but didn't write a review at the time.

Utterly fantastic game. I've played many, many games throughout my life and this is one of very few that I'd award a true 10/10 to along with Thief 2, which is extremely similar in quality if not slightly better. Virtually in a genre all on its own thanks to a complete lack of interest in modern developers in making games like this again. Along with Thief 2, the best stealth game ever made, and very enjoyable and challenging all the way through. Cannot recommend this enough to people who might like modern stealth games such as Dishonored; this game is what started it all.

If you do get this, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you download the free TFix mod you can find free online. Basically works as a patch that fixes nearly every bug in the game as well as makes many modern resolution and options optimizations and doesn't detract from the game at all. If you don't get it, you're limited to 800x600 resolution. Just something to keep in mind. Same exact thing with Thief 2 except it's called T2Fix.

98 cents? You have got to be kidding me. Knowing now what I did not know then, I would pay 100 for this game. Thief2 The Metal Age as well. There are so many fan mission campaigns even larger that the original game out there. If you do not get this and Thief 2 The Metal Age you are missing out on years of playability. I can honestly say decades of playability. Been playing this since 1999. Do not hesitate. I played off of a boxed version until new technology made it not work for a while. Then out on Steam it came. The original boxed set did not work with multiple CPU cores.
