This game isn't really better or worse than vermintide 2. It's just different. If you're new to vermintide or just want to play casually then get vermintide 2. It has a fairly active player base and is still being updated. If you're into the series, however, then you might want to get this one too.
Vermintide 1 places a lot more emphasis on positioning and damage avoidance than its successor, mainly due to less health, less health regen, and a complete lack of careers. It's actually fairly useful for getting better at vermintide, since you can't rely on certain careers carrying you, and you dont have to distract yourself by trying to remember how certain careers work.
If you're interested then just be aware that the player base is fairly small, the game no longer receives updates, and you need mods for the bots to perform even competently.
Both games go on sale often (with this one going for as cheap as $3 on steam or $1.50 on g 2 a) so it's always good to look out for that too.

Warmhammer: Vermintide is an excellent game! Albeit dead now (since there is a sequel that is LEAGUES better), but it stands out from a mass of iffy indie Warhammer Games!

It's pretty to look at, and fun to play! It's a Roguelike at it's core, but has plenty of progression to keep you going, and challenge galore.

Even secret collectibles to be found. They hit the mark with this one!

**P.S. Don't spend the $30 on Vermintide, just spring for Vermintide 2

The game deserves an Oscar for the number of bugs that prevent you from completing the mission. Has it really been so difficult to remove them since 2015? Apparently the game was made exclusively for sale.

Let me correct some of the recent negative reviews - the game is NOT dead.
Yeah, there are no hundreds of servers populated with 3/4 players (there are 4 people max 'servers' in Vermintide) just waiting for you to join on your favorite map. The player base is indeed pretty small but very active, strong, and - what's I believe is the most important - super nice and helpful.

What's worth noting is that the new players are trying Vermintide nearly every day. Most players seem to be from Europe so you probably won't find many public games at 3:00 AM (though I see 25 people online at the very moment and it's 2:52 AM here). However, there's no problem in finding some company during the day - there are always at least a couple of active games, on different maps and difficulty levels. Hell, people are still playing the horde mode these days, so no, Vermintide is definitely not dead.

As for the game itself, let me tell you a story of a citghkj...

The chaotite moon Morrslieb is ominously burning in the black sky, and its greenish light heralds destruction. The ruin that will hit the cities of Ubersreik, Drachenfels and Karak Azgaraz because it is there that the skaven, the inhabitants of the underground tunnels, the murderous race of rat mutants arising from the chaotite will invade. Skaven believes that the rule of the whole world on the surface is destined for them. It will be up to you and four other heroes to talk them out of it.
The progress of the missions is based on cooperation and teamwork, where even a momentary soloing is very difficult. In addition, due to some game mechanics, prolonged solitude is completely impossible.
The basic tactic of the Horned Rat's servants is an ambush attack, so you will really enjoy the back raids and unexpected assaults.
But most of all, a gutter runner, an elite skaven assassin, occasionally runs after you, and if he manages to knock you to the ground (which he usually does), a comrade-in-arms must set you free, otherwise the rat will cut you mercilessly and without hesitation. So you probably understand that if you set out on a separate heroic expedition without thinking and a assassin finds you somewhere three streets away from your group, you will end up as a peasant near Chlumec.

Perhaps most modest is the modest use of Warhammer realities. The game takes place in the micro-universe of one city, I understand, it would not be logical to meet out of nowhere in skating tunnels, for example, Khorn's bloodthirsty. Unfortunately, the authors did not make full use of the potential of the rat race.

Warhammer is a matter of my heart, the books I had read before the games came. And that's why I remain disappointed - I expected too much from it.
Vermindite is purely an atmospheric event for me. 40%

What is Warhammer Vermintide ?

Originally when I played this game once years ago I just found it to be a boring, forgettable take on left 4 dead's concepts, but years later I gave it another chance and played with some friends and I had a lot of fun, while I have to admit if youre coming here for story or anything related to that you will be disappointed, theres none of that here, at best a lore book but other than that nothing, here all you have is a rather simple but fun gameplay loop, you can choose between 5 playable characters and play either by yourself with a bunch of useless bots or you can go online with 3 another players, the game focuses more on metodical gameplay rather than rushing, it isnt afraid to throw at you many enemies at once and at the end of each level you can get a new weapon, the game features some rpg mechanics in its loot drop system, theres lots of weapon types and the game goes quite diverse here between the 5 characters, both melee and ranged weapons which takes some repetition away from the game, the game also has a pretty good atmosphere and sound effects, altho I wish it had a little more maps, I few there wanst many of them plus they lacked diversity, like most maps were just you in a destroyed city or ruins, or in the woods or in a cave, just that nothing else, some dlc levels introduced cooler maps like maps covered in snow which I like, overall I think its a good game, its also pretty cheap I see no reason to not recommend it, some dlcs are also worth getting if you want more, go for it.

Vermintide is a great L4D clone that focuses on melee combat and has some pretty neat RPG elements in the game. Different characters with specific weapon classes, loot, and an interesting mechanic you gotta utilize if you want better loot. Game is gorgeous, fun, and a blast totally worth the price tag.

The AI is utterly useless. They can't figure out how to strike armoured enemies in the head correctly and the game keeps spawning groups of six or seven of these guys, so they inevitably die. The AI sometimes bugs out and just stands there and lets me die. Literally unplayable without three other humans. Somehow much, much worse than Left4Dead. It runs like crap, too.

Gorgeous fantasy co-op game, likely one of the best and prettiest I've ever played. Fairly simple to get into and start hacking hordes of mobs. Not bad singleplayer, although good luck completing more than normal or hard mode on most missions using the bots as teammates (playing solo). Even when playing normal mode, try to keep the bots close to you so you don't get separated and picked off.

The level design and aesthetic is top-notch fantasy. Set it a very faithfully visualized rendition of the Warhammer Fantasy Role-play setting, his is much prettier than the vast majority of other medieval/fantasy games I've played, in fact, this game has to have one of my favorite aesthetics I've seen in any game ever, probably right up there in the top 20 of all time. It was very pretty when it came out and still is at the time of this review (and I just played Cyberpunk 2077, The Outer Worlds, Kingdom Come Deliverance, and Conan Exiles, speaking of pretty games), which I feel is saying a lot.

Combat is hack and slash (or shoot). Inventory is very simple, you pick up 1 bomb, 1 potion and 1 healing item per teammate, and that's that. You loot Loot Dice (for rolling loot at the end of missions), Lore Pages and Tomes (bonus mission exp), and you level and equip your character by completing missions. About as straightforward as it gets.

Solid game, and very easy to recommend. 8/10.

If you're looking for a 'melee orientated' version of Left 4 Dead, this is the game for you, however I highly recommend playing this with friends as the AI is ABYSMAL.

On difficulties higher than Normal, 80% of the time, they will ignore your pleas for help and will be content with watching you bleed out right in front of them. The monkey brained AI can be fixed with mods and the devs have listed in the launcher's main menu that there will be a built-in support tab for mods (most likely a launcher) but that has NOT been implemented yet.

All in all, great game. It's challenging, atmospheric and looks amazing if you can run it on Ultra, but beware of the AI! They WILL attempt to ruin any love you may gain for this game. Please, please do not sully your opinion of the higher difficulties by putting up with the stupid asinine headed computer players and try to get at least one or two friends to play with you.

8/10 would be a solid 9 if the AI wasn't so dumb.
Now go smack some rats!

Best FPS hoard mode game since left for dead 2. be prepared to play with bots and also lose a run because the bots are not even programmed to play the game well they act like ghosts that stick to your back killing enemies from behind. that being said all characters act and play uniquely the loot grind is now non existent because there is no one to do the grind with so I recommend playing on normal if your playing solo. you will eventually get better gear but its really random and not worth paying attention to. the main campaign is quite short taking about ten hours I do also recommend picking up the 4 level DLCs as they make level count almost twice as much as was at release and most of the the DLC levels are more well developed then the first ones. graphics look amazing I remember this game use to chug on my hardware 2015 but now it runs butter smooth if you have the correct specs. I think this is better then Ver2 its a much more contained experience while Ver2 is leaning to hard on the online aspects.

The game works well, the graphics are good, the AI is sensible. However, there is far too little content, and considering most players have moved onto Vermintide 2 there is very little group play other than your friends if they join in.
All the DLCs together probably double the content of the game, but they are not value for money in my opinion, some of them only provide a couple of quests, though each one is on a new map. But they don't change gameplay in the slightest, its the same opponents, other than the scenery it changes nothing.

If you can get it on offer, perhaps the whole thing is worth £10 -£20

So after 2,634 hours of hunting rats, carrying tomes and inhaling poisonous green gas, I have still not written a review. And it is somewhat too late. There is probably no readership anymore since even this game's successor is years old by now. Many players have retired and I have too; enduring problems with my wrist made me prefer turn-based strategy. Otherwise I would still be roaming the streets, cellars, and squares of Ubersreik, and the depths below.

There is just no experience comparable to the thrill, the immersion, the horrors and the triumph of a Vermintide run. Especially in a good team. In my years of playing Vermintide I have met the best, friendliest and most competent players you could ever imagine. This game had - and I'd assume still has - a fantastically creative, cooperative and supportive community, and there is a good variety of mods improving the experience in many ways.

I've been playing all kinds of video games, for about 25 years now, and I can say with absolute confidence that Vermintide is the single best of them.

The year is 2523 IC, Ubersreik is currently being sieged by the numerous army of the skaven and it's leader Rasknitt who seeks to conquer the world for his vermintide. At the same time fate unites 5 heroes to take the fight against the ratkin on the darkest hour of the warhammer world.

---Pros---
-Lore is fun if you don't mind the bad writing of the End Times itself
-Graphics are beautiful
-Visceral Combat;
-Four Player Co-Op;
-Charismatic Characters;
-Wide Variety of Weapons ranging from melee to ranged.
---Cons---
-Optimization kinda sucks;
-A few bugs here and there(body physics, enemy/item spawn);
-AI feels like left 4 dead.

Score: 8.0/10 - Get some friends and get it in a sale or if you don't bother with lore just get Vermintide 2.

WOW - The original Warhammer Vermintide : The End Times, coop game that set the standard so high. This is where it all began. The amazing cast of characters / misfit teammates. the diverse & challenging level designs, the onslaught of decrepit vermin types, the much needed coop team play to survive & conquer the vast array of challenges contained within each level. The fun reward system of weaponry & hats/wardrobe. if you play alone you will die alone / if you help your team mates & your team mates help you & you all stick together you can overcome the at times impossible odds to survive to the end of each level and be greatly rewarded. a coop masterpiece !!! Great job - well done Fatshark !!!

Better than 2 every way, especially the progression (grind), except the number of active players. Therefore, try and drag a friend in with you and get a bot AI mod. Nothing added in the second game actually improved core gameplay, which is stellar here

Hi there, the ancient gamer here, 73 years old and my first gaming rig! Love this game how can you go wrong smashing man size rat's with a hammer, hahaha, what a hoot!
The game is beautifully animated and a great story too, I mean come on, all this stuff is fantasy and not meant to be a reality check... it's an escape, a run in the dark where there is no fear, because you can't really die, and besides that, you carry a big hammer and know how to use it!

Listen, I am a causal player and I play to have fun... to escape from the real calamities of life...anyways, Warhammer vermintide 2 end Times is fast pace and loads of fun....

God this is a tough one to rate.....

I've really enjoyed playing Vermintide, and find myself wanting to go back into it night after night. It's easy to pickup and just run with it. The characters have different abiilties that make each one just a bit different. It's easy to find a favorite and run with it. The way they've structured classic classes, such as the mage, to have repricussions for overusing their powers. You have to think things through and actually work for a win rather than just have it handed to you.

I did however run into a few problems while playing. Frequently when playing, I would get about 30 or so minutes into a map and get disconnected from the game server. My connection to Steam/Discord/everything else was fine but the game server would drop me. When you come back from a drop you loose everything you had done on the map. This usually causes me to stop for the night, I find I can get through a single map about 80% of the time first go. If I try to do a second map it seems to have about a 1 in 5 chance of working with the other 4 causing a crash. You also may run in to situations where your NPC team dissapears when you need them most, causing you to get stuck in some really bad situations.

I would definitely reccommend picking this up if it's on sale.

Pros:
Gameplay
Character diversity
Challange

Cons:
Crashes
Companion Bugs

TLDR: Worth a buy if it's on sale. I'd be tempted to restart the game client between each match to try and keep it stable...

I first played Vermintide in 2016, playing some matches with strangers, and enjoyed it for what it was, but to get the full benefit I needed a co-op crew. In the second half of 2019 I started doing regular co-op gaming with some friends who moved across the country, and Vermintide was the first game we really sunk our teeth into. And I loved it.

At its core, this is a Left 4 Dead style game where you wade through infinite spawns of creatures (in this case, Skaven, the anthropomorphic rats of Warhammer Fantasy) in carefully crafted, roughly linear levels. There’s a narrative campaign you go through that’s of decent length, but long-term play involves repeating levels with different characters and weapons to grind better equipment.

I’m not a huge fan of “late game grinding,” but Vermintide provides a fantastic first run through the campaign, and the DLC (now available for cheap) is of general high quality. But what makes this work is that there’s a kinetic satisfaction to melee combat that I’ve never encountered in a first-person game, and there’s a lovely balance between the gothic, Grimdark atmosphere and the fundamental absurdity of your motley brigade killing thousands of rats.

Even when my group moved on, I still picked this up on occasion, just to do the combat again (and soak up the atmosphere). As someone who primarily focuses on narrative games, this is remarkable

This game has Left 4 Dead vibes, including its co-op campaign, but it is set in a Middle Age world, you have more characters to choose from (with different weapons each), instead of zombies we have anthropomorphic rats, and there are collectibles (lore books). We meet different tasks in the way and stuff to loot. The story is great as well.

This game is very fun, it's a blend of Left 4 Dead and classic Warhammer theme. Only one major problem: Multiplayer is dead in the game, and the bots are not very bright. My suggestion is grab 3 other friends for this game. You can complete this game solo, but these games are made for co up therefore they are more fun when you are not carrying AI.

This is a difficult game to recommend, but im giving it a thumbs up with heavy disclaimers.

Enjoyment of this game may require one or more of the following:

-Searching the forums with your questions
-Reading guides.
-Joining community groups.
-Modding the game.
-Putting in dozens of hours to git gud.
-Watching youtube videos to git gud.
-Putting up with a diminished player base.
-Tweaking settings.

Lets see what happens when you buy the game. You start the only map you can play on HARD -because of course you start on hard- get utterly demolished by the first group of rats while your bots are scraching their behinds somewhere.
Then you lower diffculty to easy, tank every single hit from a single healthpool, finish the map, roll a white weapon, all while your bots are scraching their behinds somewhere.
Now, fate will bring you in either of two directions:

A -You become a thumbs down reviewer:
You will express your righteous anger by telling everyone how the combat is overly simplistic as you just hold down M1 and kill throngs of ratmen. How few maps there are and its so boring. How the bots are useless and there is nobody to play with. And how the loot system is terrible, BECAUSE OF COURSE getting that shiny sword on top of the table is THE ONLY thing keeping you from playing on higher difficulties.

B -You remember this review and try some of the things i mentioned.
You search the forum and learn that you have to complete the maps in order to unlock them and see them in the lobby list. You check out the communty guides and learn that there are dodge, push and block moves. Learn that there are different attack patterns, range, stun, etc for all the dozens of weapons. Learn that mods exist for this game that make the bots great, give you a pause option and a miriad other things. You join the community group and may hear that there are mods that unlock all the maps for you or give you whatever weapon, if you so wish. And with this knowledge you try the game again and revel in the joy of gittin gud.

The best thing about this game in my opinion is the gameplay itself. Not the barebones but servicable story, not the fabolous banter of the characters, not the gorgeous graphics or the skinner-box of loot. Its the thrill of making split second decisions of tactics, of movement, of combat; and conquering ever increasing difficulties.
The catch is, you will have to work for it.

Or buy Vermintide 2, i hear its much more accessible, but has a bunch of neon colors and flashy anime ultimate moves which i personally dislike.

Short version:

Pros:
+ Satisfying combat
+ Amazing characters, lore and world building
+ Super challenging
+ Risk vs Reward dynamic
+ Tons of variety in combat (weapons, enemies, trinkets, etc.)
+ Graphics are neat and highly stylish
+ Sound effects pack a punch
+ Friendly community
+ Good replay value

Cons:
- Loot is too grindy
- Requires too much playtime from newcomers to start being enjoyable

“Long” version:
Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide is a first-person, melee-focused game developed and published by Fatshark.
You play as one of five characters and must complete various objectives in and around Ubersreik while dealing with countless hordes of Skaven – humanoid rat-men with an insatiable appetite for flesh, chaos and destruction.

The story might seem superficial at first, as it seems very straight forward and it also takes a few detours along the way; however, just like in the Left 4 Dead franchise, if you pay attention to the voice lines throughout the levels, as you replay them, you will be presented with a decent chunk of backstory for the main characters, their motivations and interactions.
I absolutely love the characters and they are the reason I started playing other games set in the Warhammer universe.

Gameplay is the most important factor in Vermintide.
You usually have to go from point A to B and kill everything on the way – there is some variety to the countless obstacles you encounter, like different enemy spawns, objects which need to be destroyed or having to collect a certain amount of resources before proceeding.

Combat is easy to understand but very challenging to master – even though you can use both melee and ranged weapons, the focus is clearly on the former.
When using melee weapons, you have light and heavy attacks. While you can dispose of most common Skaven with a few swings, they are so plentiful that it still requires strategy. You can also block with your melee weapon – trying to block with swords and maces recklessly will most likely get you hit, as you will run out of stamina (the “resource” you use to block). Some characters can carry shields and that is when blocking becomes a legitimate strategy.
Ranged weapons are usually used as a last resort, either for stronger enemy types or in situations in which your primary weapon might struggle. The ammo count for most heroes is usually low, so you must use these weapons sparingly or risk being out of ammo during important encounters. The coolest thing about these, in my opinion, is how different they can feel. While the weapon itself might still be the same (a bow, for example), the ammo it uses will affect how you play, tremendously. You can focus on taking down huge, important targets with slow and powerful projectiles, but you will struggle with hordes of smaller enemies – on the other hand, you can go for area-of-effect damage and kill everything by the dozen but deal low damage to special Skaven.
I usually prefer to pick a melee and ranged weapon which complement each other, but you can certainly decide to specialize in a specific enemy type if you prefer.
No matter which weapon you are using, you can also dodge sideways and backwards – this move is invaluable to “dance” around the battlefield, thinning out the horde.
You can also pick 3 trinkets that give you a wide variety of buffs – these can have a constant, passive effect or trigger on item consumption or when healing others, for example.
Speaking of items, you can also carry three distinct objects to help you and you comrades. A healing item, a potion that can either enhance your attack power or speed and a bomb. You can also find them scattered around the maps.
Each weapon has different stats, such as damage per hit, crowd-control and attack speed. It mostly comes down to personal preference and you can make almost any weapon work. The weapons can also have up to 3 weapon traits – special abilities that grant you bonuses on hit/kill, passive improvements, etc.

All in all, there is a lot of customization for combat, but I still feel like it all sort of becomes a matter of rhythm, in a way, as you must dispose of enemies as fast as possible while keeping in mind when to attack, block or dodge. There is great fluidity to it and it also feels rewarding.

The enemies are also really cool.
Common Skaven are numerous and very dangerous – they can easily overwhelm or corner you if you are not aware of your surroundings. They can come out of drains and sewers, jump down from rooftops, etc. You need to be aware of your surroundings and make sure you stick together to succeed.
Vermintide also features special Skaven – units that are much more durable. Some even have the ability to incapacitate players instantly, so you must rely on your team to survive. While most are very similar to the common infected in Left 4 Dead (last time I compare the two, I promise), I still appreciated how “fair” combat against them felt. You can counter most of their attempts to incapacitate you with well-timed dodges and the window to react is fairly generous.

After you complete a level you get to roll the dice to get random loot. You can increase your odds of better loot by playing harder difficulties and finding grimoires and tomes. Anything above normal will be quite challenging for new players – your weapons are weak, your teammates are also underpowered, etc. If you try something harder with bad gear it will most likely end up in failure (which gives you little XP).
So you can try to go for grimoires and tomes, instead.
Carrying a tome will make it so you cannot carry a healing item, which is a fair trade when playing with friends. Grimoires, however, cut your team’s HP down by 33% (stacking up to 66% if you are carrying two) which is a bit absurd. Do not get me wrong, I love this mechanic, it has given me the best runs and loot of all my playtime, but I know it is poorly implemented.
It feels like a vicious cycle – you are too weak and new to complete maps on harder difficulties, so you get bad rewards; your items are too bad to attempt runs on harder difficulties so you go for easier options…
The game also features a semi-convoluted crafting system that is too hard to explain. It works but it could be easier to understand. There are also daily quests that give you weapons and crafting resources.

Graphically speaking, I adore how this game looks. The graphics are no longer considered mind-blowing by today’s standards, but the art-style and presentation are! The buildings’ architecture is outstanding, the world feels believable and lived in. Locations are varied – lush forests, snow-covered mountain peaks, disgusting sewers, etc.
The hero and enemy design are outstanding – their personality shines through their clothing/armor and the animations are crisp and easy to understand (clear indicators during combat).

Sound is up next.
The game has a very minimalistic soundtrack that usually plays during key events, like a boss battle or when reaching a new location. While it is not present throughout most of the map, it comes in at the right times and accentuates the urgency of the situations. It is thrilling and it works.
Sound effects pack a punch and feel visceral and satisfying. Bonking a human-sized rat in the head with a mace and witnessing its head explode sounds crunchy and is deeply cathartic (dear Sigmar, I need help).
Voice acting is phenomenal. The heroes have distinct personalities and their voice actors are clearly very talented. The Skaven feel threatening and have great lines too. I found their speech hilarious, for some reason.

Difficulty settings that seemed infeasible at first are wonderful co-op experiences and satisfying to complete.

So yeah, a game with tons of content that requires a fairly big commitment from new players. After you get decent loot, I feel like the game becomes much more enjoyable.

I confidently recommend this “hidden” gem!

Final score: 9 out of 10.

Basically a more basic version of 2, if you want to check out some maps that isn't in Vermintide 2 such as Karak Azgaraz, Stromdorf ect. You'll also be able to play the OG version of the maps in Vermintide 2 which have been remade and ported. Probably should buy this on sale with the DLC maps since 2 is better overall.

Warhammer: End Times - Verminetide is a great spiritual successor to the old Left 4 Dead series by Valve, and a great addition to the library of Warhammer games. While it is by no means perfect, it stands on a solid ground made up of fun combat, great locales with some fantastic vistas, fun characters with intertwining and surprisingly complicated relationships, and a generally good time.

It has it's fair share of problems. Enemy units has some fantastic ragdoll physics and can be cut up in a myrriad of ways, but this can cause them to clip into the terrain and that causes some crazy movement that may take you out of the experience. It's nothing that will break the game or cause you to crash, but it's hard to miss and can end up distracting.

It's also a co-op game first, and while the bots that you bring with you during 1 to 3 player games are fairly good, saving healing items untill low health, fighting and blocks decently well, and generally tries to protect the human player(s) they are by no means a substitute. They are greedy with healing items, should they not already have one, they will not grab bombs or potions unles you ping them, and even when they pick it up they will never use them, instead opting to give them to you whenever you spend one yourself. They can also have problem with prioritising dangerous targets, such as special enemies or elites, and in nothing is this more evident than in hordes on higher levels, which can be decently frequent.

The loot system is far from what I would prefere as it mostly relies on RNG. At the end of every level you are guaranteed to get a random item, but you also role dice to try and gain a higher tier item. These dice are all but generous with a general chance of 2 out of 6 chance to get a hit, and while you do roll quite a few of them your chances to reach the top is still incredibly slim and you have no say in what you might get. There are ways to ease the effect, as some levels have 3 so called Skaven Tomes and 2 Skaven Grimoires, but those are risky to take, as each Grimoire lowers your party's max HP by a third and takes up a potion slot, and each Tome takes up a character's healing slot. But should you finish a level with them, each will replace a normal die for one better, with Grimoires guaranteeing you a success, The act of finding them alone can be quite fun as they are well hidden. Difficulty also changes what tiers of items you might gain with each level of difficulty raising both the minimum tier and the maximum tier.

You should also be aware that while there are still quite a lot of people still playing it, it's not a large community playing it any more as most have moved on to the sequel, but those still around are harmless in general, if a bit quiet. This also means that while the game is stable and working fine, it's no longer being supported directly by the developer.

On the positive side, the combat is, as mentioned earlier, great. Even the lowest tier of weapon does well as the general stats are only dependant on what weapon type you have, with tiers only adding more perks. I have yet to find a weapon that isn't usefull in some way and there is something for everyone. The melee has some good weight to it without feeling cumbersome and the ranged weapons acts they way they should. Still working on mastering those hitboxes though, they are a bit tricky.

The characters are great and have a lot of banter between them. Markus Kruber is the sensible and straight man of the group. A grounded but caring man, who often find himself out of the loop as the others come from more fantastical backgrounds. Sienna Fuegonasus is as wild as the fire she wields, and sometimes just as angry as well. Her risk management ranged gameplay is fun, and her spells are sufficiently explosive. Kerilian is snarky and often pokes fun at the others, mostly in jest, but in moments of danger a more compassionate side peaks through the mask. Bardin Goreksson is friendly and ever the optimist, making friends with Kruber and often exchanging banter with Kerillian, though itr's much more lighthearted from his end, but when brought low he hints of a grimness inside him. Victor Saltzpyre is as paranoid as he is devout and is a zelot through and through, but he shows respect to those that are him loyal or aids him in his weaker moments, even willing to force down his pride.

These characters have a myrriad of lines to exchange in different situation, all unique to their personality. Pointing out items, commenting on going the wrong way, when theu heal, when others heal, when they heal others, seeing a special enemy, calling out a special enemy, entering new areas, saving each other, the list of things goes on. And yet, it's never truly overwhelming. They never really talk over each other unless it would seem natural for the situation. Only pointing out things like items or special enemies will interupt the longer lines so not really something to worry about, and the balance keeps them alive and makes them feel like people while not reaching the point of annoying.

The places you go to are all at least charming locations, ranging from the infested streets of Ubersreik, to nearby forests, old graveyards, and wet sewers. All levels are well crafted in terms of looks, and often have parts that makes for some great visuals, like wide streets with a great tower in the distance, open swamps, large courtyards, and devestated fortifications, often with the sign of previous battles or the devestation the Skaven, the legion of ratmen that makes up the big threat and enemies in the game, have left in their wake.

I strongly recommend Vermintide, even if the sequel is out, as it is still a great old time. It truly shines when you can play in a full group, especially with friends, but it's fun in general if a bit grindy. It's easy to pick up, but takes time to fully master even after you have managed to lock down the basics, and a source of much entertainment for me. So round up some friends, pick your character, gear up, and kill some Skaven. Ubersreik needs your help.

Fatshark has come a long way and I cannot wait to see how will their next venture into W4K:Darktide will go!

I started with Vermintide 2 and when I picked up Vermintide The End Times after it I can see difference between them already on the beginning.

Vermintide 2 is better in almost every department except in RP and how it delivers the story and lore.
Dont get me wrong now. Vermintide The End Times is great game.

It got everything you want. Simple but nice story, good RP atmosphere and lore that is introduced through map on table and by innkeeper what you need to do on missions and why.
Combat gameplay is good but Vermintide 2 does it better.

Vermintide The End Times is a good combat co-op game but sadly almost all players moved to Vermintide 2 so it's almost impossible to get co-op.
But you can still play with bots just be careful at higher difficulty.
Game can also get grindy if you want top gear or so I noticed this topics on forums but you can decide on that by yourself.
If you still wanna try and play it get it on sale in bundle together with DLCs.

Game score: 7/10

So I got this wonderful game: Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide, it is very similar to Left 4 Dead, but with an emphasis on destroying ratmen (Skaven). However, in this game there are various classes of characters, sets of weapons, collecting books and scrolls. Cool and hardcore game, I recommend this game to L4D lovers.

Here is a list of differences from L4D:
1. In Vermintide we are fighting against hordes of rat-men (skavens).
2. We need to rise our level in the game, for each level they give a weapon.
3. There are 5 different types of characters in the game, each with its own unique appearance, voice, height, set of weapons used.
4. Also in the game there is an inventory and the ability to use different types of weapons by your characters, for example, a gnome can shoot from a crossbow or from a gnomish shotgun, and so on.
5. You can improve your weapons at the forge or break into ingredients.
6. Also you can take quests and receive rewards for completing them.

I have all the DLCs with additional missions, so add me as a friend - then you can play all missions with me without buying DLC.

I wish the developers of this game every success, financial prosperity, and good health! I hug you and kiss you!

I've had this in my library for a long time and decided to give it a go. But now the playerbase has dwindled so you'll likely be playing alone with bots for the most part. Everyone has moved on to the sequel.
It's just not a fun experience to solo levels because the bots will not really do any group tasks and will mostly just follow you and hold aggro.
If you're interested in this kind of game I'd suggest checking out the sequel as that's where you'll find the playerbase.

Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide is a 4 player co-op first person hack and slash game inspired by Left 4 Dead.

The gameplay is focused around melee combat with light and heavy attacks, shove, block and limited ammo for ranged weapons that is usually used for the enemy specials. There's 5 characters to choose from that each have their specialized weapons. Playing is intense and you have to be prepared to face an enemy from any direction and be ready to quickly react to a jumping rat off screen. Some levels are locked behind paid DLC, but they allow non DLC players to join the host with the DLC.

Getting better and competitive weapons for the harder difficulties is sadly a grind. There is randomized loot after completing each level. Or you can use the quests and contracts to grind a guaranteed drop after up to 10 completed contracts where contracts are available two per day with one being locked behind DLC levels and an extra on sunday. Changing the weapon traits is also RNG and requires resources for every reroll. This also applies to upgrading the stats for each trait. This is avoided if you find a weapon of red quality that has two presets of traits and max stats for the traits.

Another thing to mention is that most of the playerbase today has moved on to Vermintide 2 so you will need to invite friends to play with other people. The allied AI isn't the best, but there is a mod that fixes that. It improves the AI logic, allows them to pick up tomes and grimoires that give better chances at end of level loot, shows floating numbers and many other useful options. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1090355288

For achievement hunters:
It's a hard game with challenging achievements that will require a full lobby. There are some achievements locked behind DLC that you can get without owning the DLC if a friend has it and hosts for you.

I earned myself a Vermintide steam key after winning a review contest for a local gaming community with my written work on the classic grand strategy of Rome: Total War. I played Vermintide for the first time in the winter break of 2017, thinking that it will offer a few hours of good fun with friends over the holidays.

This game changed my life. To say that the developers at Fatshark have poured their souls into this title would be an understatement. For me it rightfully has a place in the hall of timeless gems such as Quake, Thief: The Dark Project or SOMA. It has not only provided me with great value for my time and a sense of accomplishment as I learned its various facets and overcome all of its challenges, but at a human level it has allowed me to connect with people who have become some of my best friends. For this alone I could offer nothing but praise to this game.

Vermintide is set in the world of Warhammer Fantasy, with particular emphasis on Ubersreik, a backwater town near the southern borders of the Reikland. One fateful night, the city's sewers overflow with a tide of ratmen dead-set on bringing it to ruin. Their assault is swift and depressingly effective, leaving but a few pockets of resistance in an otherwise massacred town. One of these pockets happens to be located within the Red Moon Inn, from where the  keeper, Franz Lohner, and a rag-tag band of five adventurers must try to workout a plan and turn things around. The game's campaign takes place over 15 maps, 13 from the original release, a map acting as a secret challenge and a final bonus bridging the story towards the game's sequel. Within each map, fours players each assume the role of one of the five adventures and work together towards traversing a hostile environment, fulfilling the map's objectives and making a successful getaway.

The game puts a lot of emphasis on cooperation and tactics. The players need to stick together and assume various roles that will help them overcome dangerous situations which are generated behind the curtains by an AI director, so that no two runs of the same map are identical. For example, some of the players can act like frontline fighters who wade into the swarms of vermin while others use ranged weaponry to eliminate dangerous rat specialists that can deal tremendous damage if left unchecked. Mastering the game is a culmination of many factors, from learning how to move and position throughout a map, to anticipate what the AI director is up to or understanding how to use the chosen weapons effectively and how to work as a unit. Each of the five playable characters have their own backstory, personality and agenda. None of them are traditional heroes by any means and they work together more out of necessity than desire. The voice acting and writing are absolutely stellar, which is remarkable for a title focusing more on gameplay and presenting the story only in subtle tones.

When embarking on an adventure, each player can pick a melee and a ranged weapon from their arsenal, together with up to three trinkets that offer various bonuses. There is a wide selection of weapons and trinkets to choose from and they fulfill various roles, with weapons being customized further by having up to three traits applied to them which provide additional benefits. Many combinations of gear are quite viable, but overall the balance is by no means perfect. For each character, some of the weapons, trinkets and trait combinations simply outshine other choices by a very large margin.

This is a game which you either play through once on a low difficulty level and then move on, or you stick with it forever and you grind it until you've conquered every challenge it throws at you. Unfortunately, while each player can master the game at their own pace, the same is not true about acquiring the gear that is needed. In this regard, Vermintide is extremely grindy. Upon successfully completing a map, you are awarded a single item, which can be a weapon, a trinket or a cosmetic hat. You can at best bias the odds towards the item being suited to a character of your choice and towards it being of a higher quality, the latter being handled in two ways: firstly by beating the map on a higher difficulty level and secondly managing to do so while making it to the end with, curiously enough, a bunch of books. These books eat up inventory slots that could otherwise be filled with healing supplies or magical potions, and the books that eat the potion slot also happen to munch a substantial amount of the players' health pools. All in all, it's quite a risk that often doesn't really pay off. The only ways in which one can guarantee the acquisition of desired  items are either playing the game for a very long time or reserving the items in question from a bounty board if they happens to show up there, and then trading a number of tokens for them. These tokens are obtained by fulfilling specific quests on a given map, like for example finishing the run with no one in the team dying. What's nice is that  even if one if these quests is only partially fulfilled, the progress is saved and the players can attempt them again retaining their previous advantage.

Customizing a weapon is where the true grief lies. The process is completely random and requires large amounts of crafting materials which can only be obtained in small supplies either from the contracts board or from salvaging weapons that are not needed. It's painstaking to say the least, and sometimes it can take up to weeks or months to finally get lucky on rolling that specific combination of traits that you wanted. Furthermore, the game is extremely obscure about its inner workings and mechanics and players need to resort to community-made resources in order to learn basic things like how much damage a weapon deals to various types of enemies or what combinations of traits are possible on given weapons. Many essential quality of life features were never implemented, and once more players must resort to community-made mod-packs which fix bugs or add missing features. These mods are fully compatible with the game's final version.

In this day and age it is difficult to get into Vermintide as the player base has largely migrated towards its sequel. However, it is well worth playing as it has a charm of its own that didn't really make it through further in the series. If you have a bunch of friends with whom you like to hang out and play stuff together, definitely give this game a chance. It will offer you at least a few solid hours of quality entertainment, but you can't really know beforehand whether or not it will hook you so badly that you will spend the next thousand hours of your gaming time mastering it.

Initially I was very skeptical. The game looked quite dark and grim, and the concept of killing hordes of rats on arena-like maps didn't steal my heart. My friends and I decided to buy this game because it is a co-op game and we ran out of co-op games we would like to play. I won't comment the graphics because it's fine to me. The game looks nice and that's enough. I don't need tons of special effects and ultra-realistic graphics. The gameplay is a different story. The game is definitely quite hard. We died frequently on the Hard settings and had to change to Normal quite often. That was so until we discovered how useful blocks and well timed dodges are. After many hours of play, Nightmare is currently a piece of cake and Cataclysm became doable and with very good results. I'm trying to point out that this is not one of the games most people can master in one night. It requires many hours or playing, many deaths, many failures, changing tactics and learning how to play. And honestly that is what I love about the game. Time invested in playing it translates directly into the ability to finish harder difficulty settings. I've played many games and this one is the first in which this learning curved is so pronounced. Your results also don't depend on your equipment that much. They do of course but only up to a certain point. Some people say this game is repetitive. I agree, but honestly... which isn't? Every single game I played was all about doing the same set of tasks all over again. Killing targets, bringing stuff, defending certain locations, healing people, etc. Even the real life is quite repetitive so I wound't count this as a valid argument. Anyway I am NOT a fan of the Warhammer world. I just played this game and regret I hadn't done it sooner.
Cheers :).

This game is one of the most repetitive games I have ever played. There are only 4 objectives (which are more like 3) that are: deliver barrels somewhere, deliver grain somewhere, destroy objects and protect objects, these objectives are sometimes incredibly annoying and tedious to do and it gets repetitive really quickly.
The characters have like 3 voice lines, the elf keeps talking about the fucking lumberfoot and the dwarf's face being beyond saving like just shut the fuck up. The characters themselves are not that interesting, the witch hunter and the dwarf are alright, the empire soldier is meh and the elf is just an annoying bitch.
The combat itself is alright it is pretty fun to kill the skaven, however it does start to drag a little bit later on. One big issue that I have related to the combat is that the corpses only exist for like 3 hot seconds so what is the point in the gore and all that if the corpses literally dissapear almost instantly, it is silly as fuck when you throw a grenade and the skaven just dissapear instantly you dont see them flying or anything just *poof*.
The final boss is also a joke it is literally destroy 4 objects and thats all there is to it.
Overall I would say that this game is not really worth buying unless you are a very big warhammer fan most of the enjoyment I got was indeed because I was somewhat familiar with the setting, I do not really see people who arent familiar with it enjoying it at all.
This game does not have my consent

The game might not be as great as it could be, but it's still damn good.

Why isn't it truly great?
1. Limited modding possibilities for a game that would really benefit from supporting modders.
2. No map maker for a game that would really benefit from supporting mappers.
3. Barely anything to grind for/unlock.
4. No offline mode.
5. Abandoned for V2.

Why is it damn good still?
1. Great art direction.
2. Lots of maps.
3. Polished melee combat + gameplay loop.
4. Coop.
5. Low price for the game and DLC's, regularly on sale.
6. Interesting characters, well modelled with great voice acting.
7. Ragdoll physics + dismemberment.
8. Soundtrack.
9. Each class feels unique.
10. Hats...

Legit, the best L4D type game there is. Upon finishing the game on any difficulty you want to test yourself further, unless it's Cataclysm, a real nut-breaking, shivering experience that will leave you unsatisfied untill you master it. Too afraid going in solo? Take some friends and git gud. The DLC's are garbage as it is a Warhammer game, the only ones you'd need are the map ones, each gives you a new challenge just as enjoyable as the main game. If it comes to story it's okay, but this is not a story-game it's a rat-killing-axe-wielding-rampage-game and it's a great stress relief. 9/10 would look for cousin Okri again.

Good if you have mates. You need to grind a bit for those orange items but when you do, there's a deep drop in difficulty, which is nice. Then you can move from Nightmare to Cataclysm.

Sadly unplayable on Hard because it crashes mid mission so frequently. Also, bring snacks and a drink for the loading screens!

Even though the core gameplay is pretty good, this game results in more frustration than enjoyment.
The reason for this is that everything about this game is ruled by (terrrible) RNG:
the loot system, the crafting system and the spawns during the actual gameplay (missions).
And because the quality of your gear is a key element of this game, you are basically forced to grind the same missions over and over again, only to be able to play the same missions again on a higher difficulty level.
The epic stupidity here is that they took a game mechanic commonly used in pay-to-win/microtransaction type games and put it into a game that has no microtransactions.

Vermintide 1 is like a real woman, who's a bit difficult to get on with at first, but she grows on you and eventually you get to fall in love... Is it worth it? Especially when you compare it with a dead, soulless rubber doll that Vermintide 2 is?

I don't really care who or what do you prefer to spend your time with, but V2 is just fucked up and so wrong, it really made me mad at FatFucks, I mean Fatsharks, its developers.

If you like multiplayer co-op, you can't choose much better than V1 really. It has everything - great maps that doesnt grow old, fun weapons, crafting system, fun playable characters to choose from, exciting enemies, and a very decent community (compare that with the hateful, acidic retards that frequent the CS servers), I've met a bunch of great people playing V1 over the recent years, There are always players, new ones incoming or the old vets coming back, so in its 4th year or so the game is pretty far from being dead yet. The only downside is the loot system, which feels extremely unrewarding at first, but you just get used to it, and it when you finally get your hand on an orange or red weapon, it really feels rewarding.

I have 240 hours in Vermintide 2, and have just now decided to play this. So this review will be from the perspective of playing VT2 first, which I'm gonna wager most people reading this have. If this is your first, here's what I have to say to you:

Amazing game, all around, totally worth it. Have a blast with this before you pick up the second game.

Anyway, with all that in mind, I'm dumbfounded at how VT2 missed so many of the amazing aspects of the first game. The maps for example are incredible, here. I mean they're beautiful and wonderfully crafted, most of them make me stare in awe when I'm playing through them.

Vermintide 2 is beautiful, but it just doesn't have this.

As for gameplay, it's much, much slower. They took VT1 and jacked it to a thousand for VT2, but that's not a bad thing. it's just different. Of course skill from one game transfers to the other. Weapons seem to be largely balanced better, as well.

The story is good, and the characters are great. So it's just like VT2, in that way.

Really, assuming you've played VT2, this game is 1000% worth playing. It's a bit confusing, and there's definitely some parts of the game I'm glad weren't copied over, but overall I've been having blast with it.

As for numbers, here's a couple for ya: 9/10

A beautiful present for all Warhammer Fantasy fans out there, but... not as good as you may have probably heard. The thing about Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide is that it's pretty much a fantasy version of the good ol' Left 4 Dead. Which means that it's a co-op oriented game with four pre-made characters to choose from. And even though you can totally play it solo with bots taking over the three other party members, it won't be nearly as fun as playing with real people. Up to the point where the entire purpose of buying the game disappears. I mean, sure, AI is not as bad as you may expect, but still, it'll do tons of stupid mistakes, it'll leave you dying (ah, the irony), etc, etc, etc. In other words, you'll be able to finish the game on low difficulty alone, but for higher difficulties you'll need friends. And that sucks for two reasons. First – the good equipment is locked behind the high difficulties. And second – there's almost no story here. Which makes suffering through the game alone kind of pointless.

Playing it properly, on the other hand, is very fun. Warhammer always means some epic design, End Times is a fantastic period, Left 4 Dead formula was re-created pretty nicely and, even though there's a serious lack of polish here and there, this game still shines pretty bright. You love co-op games? You totally shouldn't miss this one. Like I've said, though, it also isn't as good as you may have heard. For a simple reason - it gets repetitive very fast. Very soon you'll notice that all missions are virtually the same, while the game itself is all about grinding for better gear. Sometimes you'll need to steal food, sometimes you'll need to place the explosive barrels, sometimes you'll need to protect things and sometimes you'll need to destroy things, but that's pretty much it. And it totally isn't enough to make a difference.

If you'll play the game for about an hour per session, it won't be a big problem. But if you're up for longer sessions, then... Well, like I've said, the game gets repetitive way too fast. Add a proper single player campaign with a story, add more variety and this game will be a real gem. But as is... sure, it's a very charming experience with a deep atmosphere. Sure, it works pretty great as a co-op title. But at the same exact time it feels a bit lacking and it's hard to stop thinking that this game is all about grinding. So, even though there's no way to give this game a thumb down in Steam, don't expect too much from it. Dixi.

I never got around to reviewing this game. So might as well do it now

Warhammer: End Times Vermintide is developed by Games Workshop and...well i think you know the rest about Warhammer. This is a fun co-op game for you and friends, not so much on the single-player side as it really doesn't have that same experience or taste rather unlike a co-op session that just makes it all the more fun, each character players differently so really test, and experiment to your hearts content because you may never know when that specific character pick will do you and your party some good.

The environment design is breathtaking. You really feel small in this large world, and to that end obviously comes the epic carnage; the combat leaves you very satisfied at the end of the day; going back to the co-op part of this review. You really, really need to communicate and work together there will be moments of sheer insanity that will leave your jaw hanging trying to survive rushes, and huge enemy encounters. And while this isn't some epic raid in an MMO; just the thought of coming back to home base at the end of every session leaves you again satisfied.

Overall a solid purchase for only the co-op experience. The bots more or less are sloppy as with all a.i, partners; if you get the game for only the single-player; you are doing it wrong.

Highly recommend this game even with Vermintide 2 out (but if you had to pick one, go for V2). I love coming back to it because the cool levels, immersion and downright meaty combat are just plain fun!

So if you've ever played left 4 dead, this is left 4 dead without vs mode (which is my biggest gripe) but with itemization and random loot.

Some highlights:

- Tons of gear to collect, cosmetics, different play styles for different gear and lots of powerful upgrades
- Excellent level design, seriously some of them are phenominal with stand outs being a wizards tower with sideways rooms, rooftop battles overlooking a beautiful cityscape and night sky, tight and smartly created fetch it up areas etc. Most levels are big, open, have several collectibles to find and don't get old
- Fantastic music, voice work and overall immersion
- Warhammer theme, true to lore and expertly done
- Bonus for controller support, it's a great game with a controller as well as m+k

Some cons:

- Hardest difficulty is a little too hard for me, like take two hits and you're done hard, so you can't really complete it with anything but a group of 4 players who know exactly how to play and don't make a single mistake
- Itemization is quite grindy, it'll take hours and hours to get maxed out just for one character, many many more hours to get the best cosmetics
- There are only rat men to fight, the enemies you fight in the first level are the enemies you fight forever without any variance at all
