(stalkerpedia)

Story

Die Geschichte von S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky spielt ein Jahr vor den Ereignissen des 2007 erschienenen und weltweit erfolgreichen Vorgängers S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl.

Komplett überarbeitete Levels aus S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl.
Shadow of Chernobyl.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky

2/3 Survival RPG von 2008.
2.000tes Review in meinem Archiv.
Review in english:
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/hoi4deu/discussions/0/3003303017087616028/

Auch für den zweiten Teil gild;

Auch diesmal wieder mein Hinweis;
100% Bewertung, einfach sensationell.

PS: Runs with out any issues on Win10 with DirectX 10 for any one wondering. Looks GREAT for a game almost a decade old.

BUY THE GAME! Its good!
Don't listen to the 'recent reviews' - Game is getting review-bombed by low IQ Russians orcs.
All reviews say 'Very Positive' and it is!
If you like Shadows of Chernobyl you will enjoy this one.

LOL @ All the low IQ Russian bots.????????????
You are just mad because your Orcs are getting SLAUGHTERED.
Putin should start the 'Denazification' of Russia.
He should start with his beloved Группа Вагнера (WAGNER Group) - Founded by Дмитрий Валерьевич Уткин.
Дмитрий is a Neo-Nazi, Hitler and Wagner-lover. (Wagner = Hitlers Favorite Musician).
While fighting in Луганськ (Luhansk) his troops wore Helmets made to look like WW2 Wehrmacht Helmets.
Дмитрий has Tattoos of SS and Nazi Isignias.
On December 9, 2016 he was photographed in the Kremlin with Putin when he was awarded the 'Order of Courage'.
Putin seems to love Nazis.

Clear Sky is the black sheep of the Stalker series. No doubt. It has broken shooting mechanics, inconsistent AI, reused assets and some of the level design is terrible. And I still enjoy it. SOC isn't a perfect game either and is on par with this one, in my opinion. I played and beaten both games vanilla style and I still had a blast. Clear Sky adds a little flavor to it by introducing the faction system, fast travel, and a good upgrade system as well. It's basically SOC 1.5 with minor tweaks and actually has some of SOC's scrapped content. This game gets a bad wrap and most fans would probably tell you to skip this one out right, but I don't think anyone should if you have already played SOC. Clear Sky still has that immersion, that ability to make me feel invested in this world of filthy people trying to get to The Zone. The combat feels intense at times and it's so satisfying seeing an enemy go down with a lucky headshot. There's a couple of times where the game will push you to your limits and frustrate you, but the challenge is worth it. After your done beating a difficult section, sitting down with your faction, guzzling down vodka as your comrades strum their guitar and share jokes around a neat bonfire, feels rewarding enough. Don't skip Clear Sky, you will be missing an important and immersive experience if you do so.

I really enjoyed Shadow of Chernobyl, and was excited to try the second game in the series. I was incredibly disappointed by this game, in that many features are basically unfinished, and the beginning of the game moves very slowly. I'm not a fan of the group wars either, I preferred to be my own person in the first game. But after installing the Sky Reclamation Project mod, which fixes most of the problems with the game without adding anything new, I have really been enjoying a (somewhat) vanilla playthrough. I would recommend this game, so long as you get some mod to fix the terrible problems in the original.

I really had fun playing this game but weapon mechanics are a joke. The only way to fix this was purchasing upgrades but the cost of these upgrades dude. The ways of getting money were searching USB's, completing tasks (for factions also) or hunting artifacts. And bleeding is the biggest pain in the ass in this game. You can't stop bleeding until you used bandages. There are upgrades for vests that can reduce chance of bleeding when shot but it still doesn't prevent you from bleeding. The story, well there isn't that much to say about story. It's just great. Graphics are okay, there are mods that can improve atmosphere and vision. My favorite thing in this game that i was able to join factions. It was really fun that i was able to destroy enemy base. The hardest faction to be in is obviously Bandits. Duty will constantly attack at Bandits territory. Bandits are most likely the only one's that have bugs. But you will get huge amount of cash when you will complete tasks for Bandit faction. I recommend playing this game. I would give it 7.5/10.

https://srbifikatori.rs/game/stalker_clear_sky

An ambitious prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl, dare I say its younger brother. Though a lot is borrowed from SoC, Clear Sky has new features to offer and shines old levels from the original in a different, interesting light, where different circumstances and different dangers come into play. Many new characters are introduced with rich voice acting (which is lacking in the original), as well as the famous Faction Wars, a mechanic loved by some and not so loved by others, but which, regardless, is the highlight of this game’s ambition.

It was my honor to translate this game into Serbian:

I enjoyed the first stalker game and played it for over 20+ hours for first playthrough just doing whatever i want.

As for this this game, i don't know where to begin... the minigun that will make people hate it after like 30mins ingame, or the bad aiming, like point blank misses, or flat out no accuracy no matter what you or where you shoot at, worse than CS games lol

for me, i can't recommend this game to any stalker fan, big pass with all the bad implementation of new system on this stalker.

4/10.

Not as great as the other 2 but good nonetheless. The faction wars are where it's the strongest.

Retro Review

For me Clear Sky was the first Stalker game I have ever played. I played it a long time ago as a teenager and still remember fondly how the games atmosphere just catches you instantly only to be disrupted by the many bugs and difficulty spikes it has.

Gameplay
As a prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl it has some interesting new features added into the game. Mainly upgrading gear, which not only solely improved weapons or armour but also makes the specialize in a category. You can either upgrade your AK to shoot as fast as possible, or increase the accuracy to make it almost a sniper.

This is quite expensive but generally you can now carry much more items around due to upgrades and artefacts that increase your weight making you able to sell more items. This is even more encouraged trough the abundance of guides that serve as quick travel spots now. For cash you can go hop around traders and sell your items really fast.

Strangely tough artefacts became quite rare, mostly because of a new system to actually find these via an artefact scanner. Unless you don’t have it out all time(during which you can only wield a pistol) you wont find any anymore. Traders don’t sell them for some reason either.
My biggest issue would be that strangely the AI behaviour way much more often gave random headshots thus often one shotting me or spamming grenades with pin point accuracy. Those made the late game gunfights a real chore as you can only quicksave and hope for enemies randomly missing.

There are a few new areas , old ones have been closed and new entrances and exits from areas has been added into the game. Also old factions are not in the same places anymore and new outposts and camps are sprawling all over the map giving it more life than ever.

Generally the gameworld has been made even more immersive trough the faction wars system that lets you join at some point a faction and join their cause. They will send out patrols and fight each other or engage in fights with mutants which you can hear over the radio. Generally an interesting idea but only aesthetically as participating will only earn you a reward if you manage to do it. As the game expects you to take out the enemies base completely alone and ontop of that it bugs out all the time even with patches. Its better just to stay out of faction wars unless you mod it as this will make you go into war with a faction thus having more enemies on the map to care about. Looks like a feature that didn’t got finished properly.

The fantastic underground more horror oriented sections are almost gone tough which is a huge stepback as those were my favorite. This also comes with the side effect that mutants play a very minor role in the game.
An improvement is how side quests are handled as they don’t feel as copy paste anymore due to unique stories or placements.

Story
Generally prequels arent my thing because you know what will happen anyway and it always feels like that the authors didn’t know where to proceed with the story. The ending is pretty predicable and still it disappointed me unlike the interesting canon ending in Shadow of
Chernobyl.

The story is also almost set up in the same way that you are basically chasing someone, this time strelok himself and not yourself. It just didn’t catch me in the same way as Shadow of Chernobyl´s premise got me. It did at a new faction and fleshed out the existing ones.

Aesthetics
I felt the whole setting even more immersive as before due to the earlier mentioned faction wars system. The system itself was irrelevant but made the Zone feel more credible than before.

More characters also have their own stories and feel not as static anymore. You can ask all traders, quest giver or mechanics about their backstory and other various trivia.

On a side note it added also the legendary bandit theme.

Conclusion/TL;DR

While Clear Sky has some issues, mainly the weird AI behaviour and the faction wars system being rather buggy and poorly implemented it took a lot of steps into the right direction gameplay wise by adding good new features like the upgrading and making quests more unique. All in all I think its an overall improvement over the base game even tough if the story is lacking and I miss the more horror aspect of the game. Additionally I didn’t encounter bugs or atleast not more than in Shadow of Chernobyl.

Weakest game in the series but it has the best gfx.Use SRP 1.13 to fix bugs etc.The game is the prequel to the Stalker SOC.

CONS:
Most buggy, crashy, buggy faction wars, some flashdrives can not be obtained in vanilla without the SRP mod.NPCs aimbot spam grenades even in pitnch black, they also fuse it very well.I used SRP reduced nade usage to make it balanced like in COP.

Cordon machine gunner early game can kill you in 1 seconds it's bullets can penetrate even tress so there is no real cover, many ppl will stop at this point.I used srp optional mode to reduce its dmg.
Few invincible plot stalkers can ruin the immersion.Enemy can respawn right in front of you espesialy in monolith places late game.Without SRP you can soflock yourself if you join the bandits early.
You can see about 95% of the stalkers and mutans on your map worldwide,so there is almost no suprises. This is easily the least scray and atmopseric stalker game.Once again stalkers and mutans respawn time is unrealistic.Eg you kill a millitary base of>20 soldiers. You move away like 200 meters and they almost all respawned. In SOC and COP they respawn slowly eg 3-4 per game day.Game perfomance is the worst in the series on my GTX 1660 and i7 4770 and 16gb 1600hz RAM I get 40-140 fps sun settings on low dx 10.1 mode all others maxed,dx 10.1 aa mode on x2.Sun settings kill the perfomance...COP runs much better even with sun settings on ultra dx 11 mode all maxed noo crap aa(it blurs in that game).32 bit engine,I crash usually once in 5 hours of gameplay just like SOC....
No ironsights for pistols, can be modded using srp option.......Artifacts respawn timers are bugged without srp..........
Very few unique weapons compared to SOC and COP.

NEUTRAL:Main story is short if you don't join any factions, side quest are almost always bring me something,or repetable defend something or attack and hold something from mutans or enemy faction for reward. It has less suit/armor types than SOC.
Most areas are reused From SOC.No bleeding severity indicator,no stealth indicator unlike others, worse UI.Bandages are much more expensive and weaker, sometimes even 3 in row won't fully stop a single serious bleeding.Aritfacts are unbalanced, they were rebalanced for COP.Guide and upgrade prices were also rebalanced for COP for the better.Weapon penetration value seems to be higher you die much more easly in exoskeleton than in SOC and COP.Most late game enemies use AP ammo only.
Only 1 underground area.....Certain mutans like controlers are too rare,I only found 1 scripted fight.
Mecrhants now sell greater amounts of ammo sometimes like 700,so you won't have ammo issues.Scavening part made weakers as a result.

PROS:Enemy AI can now blind fire, throw nades....ask for help, jump over obstacles, few more speech option for random stalkers.Guide can be used to travel faster at the cost of money,IMO it is slightly expensive if traveling more maps.

Faction wars are good with SRP,otherwise they usually get bugged.....You can join different factions,so it increases replay value. This game focues on stalker vs stalker combat more than others, the game now features weapon and armor upgrade and repair system which is good.Artifacts now need to be found by detectors, you can also only carry 0-5 in your artifact slot depending on your suit and it's upgrades, making suit choice a more thoughtful process

.Easier to increase carry weight and certain thigs like medkits weigh less.Few new weapons,WARSAW pact weapons are rebalanced and generally are more competitive with NATO ones. Most guns allow to change calibers.eg AK 74 can be modifided to fire NATO type rouns or vice versa.Crouching and low crouching increases standing accuracy by more noticable amount compared to SOC.With full accuracy upgrades in low crouch standing you can have almost 100% accuracy with most Assasult rifles.
Upgrades system have mutual exlusive upgrades.eg more fire rate or less fire rate, but more accuracy you can have only one.Increases weapon roles. You can have 2 same weapons for different roles.Gun gameplay feels better than in SOC.
Good gameplay, depth of field when reloading is 10/10,sun effects even on low are awesome.Looks better than cop indy 11 mode maxed.
The game is also cheaper than others.

With SRP I rate it 8,0,This game focues more on gunplay and stalker vs stalker faction wars combat and less on mutans and scavenging and scary factor.Still a great game.As always stalker games have TONS of mods to change gameplay, gfx.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Annoying Simulator

Even though I found most of the mechanics actually BETTER than the first game, the entire gameplay experience here almost gave me a stroke. Every enemy suddenly turns into Kobe, which means they throw grenades right under your goddamn feet. Also, side quests are bugged. You are getting robbed from your earned money twice during the game. And, on top of that, if you don't choose Duty, then your save will become a chore.

I did not enjoy that game as much as I did the first one, but it is still valuable to play that for the story sake (this one's a prequel).

I'm honestly happy that Call of Pripyat was my introduction to the series because if Clear Sky was instead I'd never try another one of these games again. If you're thinking about picking this up as your introduction to STALKER do yourself a favor and go play Pripyat instead (or Shadow of Chernobyl, I haven't played it yet but I'm sure its better than this). I'll just list my grievances now to get this review out of the way as quickly as possible:

Grenades

Every enemy in the game is Kobe Bryant and will throw grenades to your EXACT pinpoint location from 20-40 meters away. This wouldn't be an issue if your character didn't throw grenades like a elementary schooler playing softball for the first time in their life.

Enemies will also throw grenades at you every single time even if focused on fighting other people which is annoying as fuck; When fighting enemies who are clearly focused on something else (and thus this makes you expect them to throw the grenade at who they're currently focusing on) you'll suddenly die from someone outside of your FoV or behind cover suddenly lobbing a grenade directly at you 20 meters away from them instead of throwing it as the 3 to 6 person squad 10 meters in front of them.

Finally grenades thrown by enemies will also explode almost right as they hit the ground unless you're up in their face, so you need to start running and KEEP RUNNING until they're done throwing the grenade and you hear it explode or kill them (we'll get to this later).

All of this together means that if you hear a SINGLE person yell that they're throwing a grenade you either need to kill them, or need to just stop playing the game for 2.5 to 3.5 seconds while you wait for them to throw it at your current location after the delay and then wait for it to travel to that location and explode. If you're caught even ONE METER within its ~8 meter blast radius you'll start bleeding and get SLOWED. And towards the end of this game you'll be fighting up to 22 enemies at once who ALL HAVE A GRENADE. This turns the game in to a shitty stalling simulator for most of the late game and before then its a constant annoyance.

Inconsistent damage

This is a small part, but enemies will take inconsistent damage from your weapons. An annoying example is the end of the game where sometimes hitting a enemy with a headshot will reward you with a instant kill, and other times, well fuck you the guy you shot in the head gets to live. This combined with the section above means that EVEN IF you headshot a guy lobbing a grenade at you with THE MOST POWERFUL SNIPER RIFLE IN THE GAME, you can still just randomly not kill him and die to either his buddies while you run away from your cover to avoid the grenade, or to the grenade itself while you're loading in another round. This is REALLY dumb and will make you reload files because this time the game decided it didn't want to reward you for landing a headshot like it did the last 4 times.

Very buggy NPCs

Another seemingly minor but actually HUGE issue with the game is how buggy NPCs are. There are multiple times where NPCs will give you a quest and then die, making a quest that would progress the story in a specific area completely incomplete. You can't cancel the quest because in order to do that you HAVE to speak with the NPC who assigned it to you, and because it's considered still in progress no one else will give that quest for you. This happens a LOT and invalidates (over the course of an entire playthrough) up to HOURS of playtime. Another bug is how some NPCs will request a specific item or ammunition and won't correctly detect what ammunition you're carrying (and thus make it impossible to turn in the quest and receive a reward or improve standings with said NPC). Those quests are also uncancelable because of how they're programmed, so I hope you like having 14 quests in progress that are stuck there for your entire run.

Another thing that's buggy about the NPCs (or in this case enemies) is combat. They'll frequently target either you or each other through walls magically knowing their enemy's location at all times (but running against walls like idiots) if there's anything between them.

They'll also frequently run directly in to hazards and get themselves hurt as if they've never step foot in the environment they've lived in for years. And they'll do it over and over until they die completely ignoring the hazard's existence (or in some extreme cases even other NPCs). This means you need to save and reload multiple times in some scenarios just to make sure NPCs don't accidentally kill themselves while escorting them, or to stop them from having wallhacks against you, or to make sure that they don't randomly DESPAWN.

???????????????????????????????? ????????????????????

Saving and reloading saves is a m-
ss-<

About what I said above, prepare to be even more annoyed! The saving and loading system in this game is broken in multiple ways.

For one, the game's RNG between saves is completely inconsistent. This might not seem like an issue except that a lot more things than you think are based on RNG. For instance if reloading a save because you died in a hard combat section, you can randomly have the game decide to throw a Emission (instant death after a timer) at you. This means that you either need to hurry the fuck up and finish whatever you were doing to get to cover, or you wasted your time for 2 minutes and now need to reload your save again and hope that the RNG of the reloaded save doesn't decide to randomly plop a Emission on your head. I've had multiple times where my last save was 5-10 minutes ago and I didn't hear about an Emission on the radio, only for my next reload to kick in an unscheduled Emission out of no where 1-2 minutes in to replaying the save.

Another thing is that it sometimes COMPLETELY breaks the game. For instance in the final section of the game having a save and reloading it will cause multiple issues.

1) A sniper on the left of your screen is despawned until a cutscene plays, but as SOON as that unskippable cutscene plays he will START SHOOTING AT YOU WHILE YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING. You either get to die during the cutscene over and over until he misses enough shots that you can immediately heal yourself and fire back at him, or reload to ANOTHER UNSKIPPABLE CUTSCENE BEFORE THAT ONE and get FORCED to WATCH TWO UNSKIPPABLE CUTSCENES EVERY TIME YOU DIE.

2) This causes multiple portal particle effects to come out of no where and make it impossible to see anything. They are stuck there for about 30 seconds or so after your save so unless you can aim headshots at enemies through blindingly bright blue particle effects have fun getting headshot by the bots who know your exact pinpoint location.

Punished for exploration & Padded-
playtime-<

First off there is a whole cast of different traders and upgrade. For traders some sell health kits for super cheap or are one of two who sell a specific armor in the game, while others will buy your artifacts for insanely high prices but price gouge you on anything you buy. Each trader has their own perks and downsides. This is actually very cool because it adds depth to the game and rewards the player for being attentive and looking for the best bargain. HOWEVER the distance between each of these traders is HUGE. If you're unaware guides can 'fast travel' you (for a price) but the price increases by a HUGE AMOUNT if you're crossing from one area from another, and because of how towns are layed out. So if you want to travel (for instance) between 2 traders and your current location to make use of this you have to spend about 10,000 RU (INSANE). Or just walk for 5-10 minutes between the local guides and waste your time :)

In addition- Oh wait...

This game is so bad I reached the-
character limit-<

To summarize, have a Haiku:

This review got halfed,
The worst STALKER game of all,
Never play Clear Sky.

Clear sky is often regarded as the worst stalker game, or even sometimes as just straight up a bad game. While I cannot deny that Clear Sky made a few significant regressions compared to the previous entry (whoever designed the bleeding mechanic for this game deserves a walk through the real exclusion zone with no protective gear) I cannot say that as a whole Clear Sky is anywhere near a bad game, or even a bad entry into the Stalker series. Let me list off some pro's and con's, keep in mind that I am talking about Clear Sky and Clear Sky only in my pro's and con's so I will not mention things that are universal across Stalker games like the survival mechanics etc.

Pro's-
-The typical Stalker ambiance is here in full force and improved graphical fidelity that is arguably even better than Shadow of Pripyat helps this aspect immensely.

-The story, this might be controversial since Clear Sky's story seems to get ridiculed often but I found the lore interesting and the world building was immense. If you are some kind of sociopath like me who actually cares about the lore of this bizarre franchise then you will enjoy what this games story has to offer. If you are simply looking to play this as a standalone and have no interest in the stalker world however I doubt you would find much enjoyment. The story explains much of the background of certain factions, their motivations, and dives into how the zone got shaped into what you see in the chronologically later entries in the series.

-The faction relations, good lord. The fact that the faction you choose becomes a major player in the story adds not only an incredible amount of fun roleplaying opportunities but also untold levels of replay value. In Clear Sky you can capture bases for your faction leading to your control over an area increasing, truly making you feel like you are making an impact on the zone without just letting you go on a full power fantasy and ruining Stalker's survivalist charm. This mechanic was so popular it inspired the most popular Stalker mods like Anomaly to include modes designed to replicate the experience.

The Con's
-The combat in this game will give you a stroke. Look, every Stalker game has some whack shooting mechanics. Nothing is worse than aiming right at some Duty members head from point blank range, shooting, somehow missing, hitting an ally, and making your only friends in the zone suddenly hostile to you forcing you to reload a save. However in Clear Sky it feels like the worst parts of Shadow of Chernobyl's shooting are not only unfixed but somehow even more prominent. Bullets often simply disappear from existence after being fired from your gun, crosshairs are more of a vague suggestion of where to shoot than an actual indication of where your bullet is going to go, and best of all even if you hit your shot you wont be much better off since the guns do almost no damage no matter the difficulty. Whats worse is that I have not managed to find a good gun overhaul mod for this game that fixes the damage issues in particular, something readily available for the other entries in the Stalker franchise.

-The bleeding mechanics. Look, I could ramble about how bad the bleeding mechanics are in this game all day. On one of my earlier playthroughs I rage uninstalled during a fight with some zombies at the ecologist lab because I ran out of bandages, the mechanics in this game are that bad. Once you get hit in this game by basically anything (even fall damage) there is about a 30-50% chance you will start to bleed out. This can be solved with a few things, bandages, running to a friendly base to beg the doctor to heal you, medkits, etc. The most common method you will use is bandages since you often don't want to waste a full med kit over a bleed that hasn't taken much of your health and running all the way to a friendly base is impractical at best. Bandages in this game however are basically worthless. I distinctly remember applying 3 bandages to myself and still bleeding from one stupid snork attack then dying because I bled out on the way back to the friendly base. My point is this games bleeding mechanics are god awful.

-This game can feel like an expansion pack rather than a full game. All three of the Stalker games in my opinion are so similar they really should have just been merged into a single experience like we see with fan made mods such as Call of Chernobyl. Clear Sky feels like an improvement over Shadow of Chernobyl in several ways, but it doesnt do much to separate itself. The map although it now hosts a few new locations is mostly unchanged. The weapons are mostly the same, the characters are mostly the same although they are in different areas, and the factions are almost entirely the same. It feels like a patched and updated version of Shadow of Chernobyl with some tweaks and questionable balance decisions made.

To conclude, Clear sky is a good game as all of the Stalker games are. It has flaws that are hard to ignore, but to say they overshadow the rest of the game would be untrue. I remember playing the Stalker trilogy for the first time years ago on discs and getting absolutely lost in the huge and deeply intriguing world. This game, along with the others in the series, hosts a magnificent mix of wonder, terror and mystery not to mention immersion that no other game can match. Would I recommend Clear Sky? That heavily depends on what experience you are looking for. If you are already a Stalker fan and you are just looking for another Stalker game to play or more lore to learn about then yes absolutely 100%. However if you are new to the series or if you have no interest in the backstory of the game and just want to play for the gameplay alone, this may be the worst of the trilogy for that. Personally? I think I'm about to start yet another freedom playthrough right now.

Eurojank is not everyone’s cup of tea. Polished games hold an important place in the medium; the highest highs are sometimes only attainable with a budget to match, necessitating a refinement of ideas before the checks are ready to cash. Even more than its younger sibling in the Metro series, I feel S.T.A.L.K.E.R. justifies the jank.

You may die, and in fact you probably will die, before you conclude your adventures in the Zone, and death will often come suddenly. It may feel unfair, but know that enemy humans are only giving as they get - armed with the same weapons and ammunition and participating in the same ballistics model as you are. Shots will not fly directly where you aimed them, but this is a part of learning: just because a weapon can be shot on full auto doesn’t mean it should be. Eventually you will find yourself feeling out how best to line up shots and when to take them.

The difficulty is HIGHLY compelling, especially if you’re more used to fast-paced shooters, but there is one element that drags it down: bleeding. This status effect can be caused by most kinds of damage and requires the use of bandages to treat, lest it drain your health bar and kill you. Bandages are not necessarily scarce nor expensive but this is balanced out by your need for dozens of them in the course of a playthrough. Bleeding has several levels of intensity, from mildly inconvenient to an accelerated death within seconds if the red leaks aren’t taken care of. Higher levels require more bandages to staunch, and you may find yourself spending more on gauze than guns.

Spending itself has a curious place in the world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., as you can trade with almost every human NPC in the game, but these are not the standard RPG merchants willing to buy whatever wares you show up with. Only certain vendors buy guns and fewer (if any) buy ammunition whereas regular Stalkers and soldiers are only interested in healing items. This might strike some as restrictive given how hard it already is to acquire meaningful sums of money in the first place, but I think it enhances the experience without stepping over the line into being punitive. It teaches you that money isn’t something you should be hoarding - you could save up enough for that special armour set but by then you could have upgraded your guns and repaired your current gear twice over - and gives you a better idea of the day-to-day lives of the inhabitants of the Zone. The region is drowning in ammunition and you’ll eventually find yourself not needing to scavenge from corpses except after the most prolonged firefights, so why should they waste their scant funds on buying it from you? It’s a very specific interpretation of scarcity of resources where the ability to kill is universal so your survival turns into being able to use cover and bandages efficiently enough that you don’t have to expend a precious medkit until the last moment.

The story is on the simple side, and that works to its advantage. The story of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is in the atmosphere, and Clear Sky doesn’t disappoint. If you can play with headphones, and especially if you can play in the dark, do so. The Zone is stuck in an eternal Autumn and as you walk over the hills and hear the wind roll through, you’ll feel it embrace your skin. When the rains come, you’ll feel the instinct kick in to find shelter, without the game using status effects to force you to. And when you hear mechanical groans emanating from the north, where the Power Plant lies? You’ll be glad for the campfires where other Stalkers gather. The crackle of the wood, the jokes in Russian, maybe one will even have a guitar if you’re lucky.

You may notice a lack of plot mentioned in that paragraph and that’s because most of it is pretty forgettable. You play a mercenary who manages to survive a radiation emission from the Power Plant, something thought impossible until now. Thus you are tasked with discovering the cause of the emissions and hopefully a solution. Your primary contacts will be the Clear Sky faction, though you’ll have a chance to meet the members of every group in the Zone by the end as they wage war on one another for dominance. It’s rather a disappointment then, that the faction system feels under-utilized outside of directing squads of NPCs to fight each other dynamically. It’s very cool that entire firefights can take place - altering the balance of power in a region - without the player’s involvement, but the game doesn’t give you many reasons to join a specific group in place of the others. In fact, it’s more of a hassle than a help for two reasons:

  • Joining a faction means being inundated with incessant requests for aid from friendly squads when they come under attack, even if you aren’t nearby.
  • The main quest involves traveling between several contested areas which generally have two factions battling for settlements with a rogue element thrown in for variety. Allying with one faction can lead to others turning hostile, making certain areas more dangerous to visit.

And so the Faction Wars system winds up feeling a little half-baked; despite a decent amount of story being relegated to it, the player can finish the game never joining a faction and never suffering for it. This is both a cause and effect of the game’s focus on fighting human enemies over mutated ones. Those more familiar with the horror elements of Shadow of Chernobyl may find Clear Sky lacking, though their appearances in this game are made more impactful for their rarity.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky is still worth your time if you want more of the Zone, but its reputation as the weakest of the trio is something to take into account. It was a very fun experience for me, and the knowledge that it’s all uphill from here is very exciting.

as much as i love the stalker games this one is awful. the enemies for some reason have an unlimited amount of grenades and throw them at you with perfect accuracy. oh, and they explode almost immediately so good luck dodging that. the final part of the game was so difficult to complete and the ending sucked. i understand that its a prequel but c'mon.

if you're a hardcore masochist then this game is perfect for you, but if you aren't then don't get it.

So, i'm not here to say it's super hard i died a bunch yada yada, it's a fine game but it's not as good as the others, this one is more focused on factions, so it's a lot faction vs faction fighting, it's cool, but the other games i think had more exploration going on with them, this one is kinda just running and gunning i'll play more of it, but shadow of chernobyl has more atmosphere to it

Clear sky sucks ass
I don't recommend playing this game
In regards to shadow of Chernobyl this game falls short on numerous aspects
-The hit registration remains the same among the two games, so you're constantly being fucked over by bullshit ass hit registration whilst wasting more ammo than necessary
-Enemies now throw grenades in Clear sky whilst unable to in Shadow of Chernobyl, this may seem like a plus as it's a new realistic way to diversify the combat however the simple minded mongoloids all seem to share one brain cell, as a result the player is bombarded by grenades
-This causes the combat to be extremely tedious as while you may be in a favourable position behind cover that's all ruined as you now have to deal with the 3+ grenades which have just landed at your feet, leading you to either die to the grenades or move out of cover leaving you exposed to the enemy fire
-Bleeding is a bastard in clear sky, any form of damage now automatically causes you to bleed, bleed also differs with severity so you may need more than one bandage to recover from a hit, if you choose not to heal the bleed you will die as it doesn't have a percentage cap like in shadow of Chernobyl
-Bleed lethality is drastically increased when you couple in the fact that enemies barely drop any meds in clear sky, causing the player to stock up on bandages which again isn't too bad except the fact you need multiple bandages to heal some bleed and most vendors don't sell anymore than 5
-Clear sky introduces a new faction war mechanic which wasn't present in the previous installment, the concept is really cool as the multiple factions now play a more substantial role in the game rather than just being there, however whilst it may seem neat to join duty or freedom I can't say I recommend it, in the later areas of the game the two factions monopolise main story destinations, if you happen to side with either side you'll be fucked over as you try to complete the later story missions as the combat is just ass in this game
-I cannot begin to describe the amount of assfuckery present within the last 2-3 hours of the game

Whilst all I have done is bitch about the game there is one particular area where I believe the game truly shines and that's the great swamp. The overall feel of the area is amazing and does a great job of placing the player into the stalker setting.

Again I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone, you're better off playing shadow of Chernobyl

Without hyperbole this game in it's vanilla state is next to unplayable on any difficulty except Master. Weapons do not function correctly, the Ai spams grenades or breaks 65% of the time, and the game itself is horribly paced. Install the SRP mod to remedy these problems slightly, it'll at least tighten your spray.

A blemish on an otherwise fantastic series.

Oh and the ending blows

Some guys says that this game is unplayable, for me it's better than Shadow of Chernobyl by far because this game has two things SoC hasn't: acceptable combat mechanics and hitbox (even if the NPCs span grenades, at least isn't like SoC where the NPC can hit you from the other side of the map and you either die or bleed like sh#t) and a crosshair that don't s#cks because it's similar to CoP.

No matter if it's the Prologue, the Vanilla game is the most close thing you'll have between SoC and CoP together. And plus, the history of this game is important to understand Shadow of Chernobyl of course. The best addons to make Vanilla less boring are the most broken ones in my humble and useless opinion tho.

I recommend this game with the utmost restraint. Clear Sky serves as an awkward, spoiled mess of an experience, one that by itself, does not reflect the strength of STALKER as a whole. Yet, I played through it, despite nonsensical cover, turret railroading, bandit hitscanning through walls and objects, chance-based ballistics, and more (even after a significant amount of vanilla modding, these problems are still present, save the ballistics). Why was all of this implemented here and not in the first entry? Shadow of Chernobyl puts so much on its atmosphere, and for good reason. It feels like Clear Sky almost wants you NOT to take note of its incredible bravura by hiding under increasingly thick layers of unnecessary frustration. Play this only if you seek to play all STALKER games.

With Clear Sky, the devs tried to expand on almost all mechanics and features of Shadow of Chernobyl. While it does bring some unique ideas to the series, many of its 'improvements' that might have seemed good on paper end up being very annoying in practice. Of course, it's still a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, so there's still loads to love and appreciate, even if it does fall short of its predecessor.

The first thing you'll probably notice is the graphics, which seem to be a major upgrade from SoC. Things like sun rays really stand out to make a beautiful environment. The starting area, an expansive swamp full of outposts and roaming bandits, is a stunning environment that sets itself apart from the traditional ruins and wilderness of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. while still maintaining the same atmosphere of beauty and unease. The rest of the game features largely the same map as SoC, which seemed lazy at first but grew on me the more I played. It was a great experience to explore the Zone before the events of SoC. It's not as dark and spooky as before, which works to the games advantage by showing off a more populated and lively Zone, a fantastic contrast to the bleak and horrifying environment you know it will eventually become.

Unfortunately, you won't be spending much time in the swamps. After a few mission for the new Clear Sky faction, you'll likely never come back here except to maybe sell some gear at their base. The fast travel system involves you paying certain guides (you can find one in every camp), to take you to any previously visited location. This quickly becomes too expensive as you progress through the game world, since the price increases with distance. Travel in general becomes very tedious due to the game's larger number of areas and very limited stamina bar for sprinting. In SoC, you could set out from the game's largest base to tackle the final three or four areas. The removal of this hub in Clear Sky sees you frequently stranded in isolated areas with low resources, meaning you'll have to back track through half the game to resupply.

Clear Sky somehow takes the infamous difficulty of S.T.AL.K.E.R. to new heights with its baffling health system and shooting mechanics. Due to the new feature of upgrading guns with extra parts and attachments (one of the few positive additions), most weapons start off with low bullet velocity and poor accuracy to allow room for improvement. This makes everything feel like a paintball gun as you watch you bullets travel and drop off, often landing nowhere near where you were aiming. For some reason, these mechanics don't apply to enemies, who can easily snipe you with a pistol, while your fully upgraded guns will still miss dramatically.

And all it takes is one pistol shot for your character to start bleeding. While I can see how the devs tried to make it more realistic, the health in this game is a chore to deal with. Bandages no longer heal you, they can only stop bleeding. If you don't apply them in time, your start to lose health more quickly over time. For some reason entire medkits, which can refill half you health bar, don't do anything to stop bleeding. This leads to annoying resource management as you have to keep stacks and stacks of two different healing items in your backpack, when they should do the same thing.

One massive improvement was the implementation of anomalies. While SoC featured mostly standard anomalies that just acted as obstacles, Clear Sky added many unique distortions that added to the atmosphere and made the Zone feel even more uneasy and mysterious. Random houses out in the wild can contain everything from unsettling black-and-white colour distortions to cursed ovens that endlessly spew out flames. Apart from these random encounters, the missions also make much better use of anomalies by having you use ominous portals to teleport to new areas.

Of course, every positive comes with a negative. The returning standard anomalies are now almost invisible and your sensor rarely gives you enough time to avoid instant death. I can only assume this was supposed to increase immersion by forcing you to actually use your bolts to safely traverse the Zone. In a game where you can save anytime, this ends up as just an annoyance.

Other annoyances include the enemies completely inhuman ability to throw grenades with pinpoint accuracy. Again, I can see the reasoning for this change, as grenades are supposed to force you out of cover in a fight. It's implementation, however, gives you barely anytime to react before the grenade lands on your head and kills you instantly. You're forced to listen for the enemies' voice line for throwing one, which lets you know to immediately start running in a straight line until you hear an explosion behind you.

Faction wars is another addition that would have been fantastic if it worked. As it is, factions will almost always bug out and refuse to capture or recapture territory, bringing the entire system to a halt. Setting up the Stalker's main base in the Cordon actually caused almost every Stalker to disappear from the area, as no one would leave the base to occupy the territories they previously owned. In the beginning, before it bugs out, you get a glimpse of what it could have been. The frantic battles over territory, roaming patrols, and surprise attacks really made the Zone feel more alive and real than the more deserted areas of SoC. If only it worked as intended, it would have elevated the series's iconic atmosphere even further.

One change that did end up working out for the better was the game's side content. In SoC, the majority of side activities were endlessly repeatable fetch quests with no engagement that simply existed to provide extra cash. In Clear Sky, side mission are given personal touches that make them feel more important and unique. Instead of going to traders and getting told to bring back the same artifact for the tenth time, you might meet a Stalker who needs help rescuing his brother from Bandits. While it may seem small, it gives personality and character to a game that isn't know for its characters.

This improvement extends to all NPCs in the game. Everyone you talk to has multiple dialogue options which, while repetitive, add so much to the world. Each faction will offer their perspectives on the game's current events and even give their own personal stories (which also get repeated unfortunately). Changes like these really reinforce Clear Sky's aim of fleshing out the Zone and its inhabitants.

While these negatives can make for a frustrating experience at times, the series has always been full of them. In my opinion, Clear Sky's goal was to expand upon the world set up in SoC, and it does this well enough. It takes the Zone we all know and offers a fresh and unique take on it. Anyone who loves the world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. can appreciate this younger and more populated Zone, full of new takes on old areas that create the atmosphere of a time when the Zone was more like the Wild West, before its eventual deterioration. I commend the devs for trying to rework every little aspect of the game to give it its own feel. In true S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fashion however, it all ended up as a buggy mess with an unpolished gem hidden inside.

This game may be the black sheep of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, but I really like it. It focuses on the factions aspect of Stalker and it you also revisit the map from the first game but its a prequel so before the events of SOC.

Tips for people playing for the first time. Make sure you have the Sky Reclamation Project on github, bugfixes and stuff. Turn SSAO off and Godrays off or on low because it makes the game run much better. Upgrade your Clear sky armor to stop bleeding and make you stronger. Upgrade weapons with recoil and flatness upgrades for maximum accuracy. Now you are good to go.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Bug!

Game is great! I had a lot of good memories while playing this masterpiece!

BUT!

SH*T ton of bugs making you go crazy, if you will be very unlucky you will have bugged missions which will make few upgrades for weapons or armours impossible to get.

Constant game crushes...!

If you are patient and want to get back some of that nostalgia... go ahead, overall it is worth it (I think).

I have heard that there are mods that will make this game run as it shuld, but i never tried them.

GOOD LUCK!

I've played SoC and really enjoyed it. After finishing the game, I decided to play CS.
My experience in the game wasn't very good;
AI was broken on both end of the scale, either they were too OP or too broken, just standing there doing nothing.
I had several minor bugs but the one that annoyed me the most was where the scientist base was locked because of zombified soldier invasion, but no enemies were present (map showed that enemies were inside the bunker). Later on I found out that a certain group of enemies had to be killed while retrieving a PDA (had to run away from them as I'm hardest difficulty) which caused the area to be locked, no details whatsoever.
Finally, the story was linear and heavily scripted that drove me away from even being engaged with it.

This is just a glorified expansion pack of the previous game with worse UI, more unbalanced combat, recycled areas, only minor graphical improvements and none of the charm or atmosphere of the original. This is just not a very fun game and pails in comparison to the original in almost every single way. If you've played the Original then there is no point in playing this, and if you have not just play the Original you're not missing out on anything.

In short; By far one of the worst games I've ever played.

Now I love SoC and CoP, I've sang their praises for years, but Clear Sky, which i only just got around too playing, is just utter garbage.

Gun combat seems particularly bad; you're as accurate with a scoped rife (single shot) in top condition at 50 meters/yards as you would be shooting a musket at 500... And that's not hyperbole. I mean all the weapons are terrible tbh. The AI however is a sniper with its weapons grenades, of which it has plenty (even at the start) when you have no ranged weapons of note, and no armor.

Speaking of the start; its by far one of the worst starts to a game.

NPCs shove you about, you can move them, so they block doors and passages. and in this STALKER game is more of an issue.

Theres no way to pass time which can really be a pain, having to wait 20 min or so so it turns day (or night) is just tedious.

Now theres the emission, which are broken, so broken it ruined and end my playing of the game by killing my save files. one happens you need shelter within a short time or you die. well, I die regardless of being in shelter, and theres nothing i can do to fix it. I have a secondary save that I could use, but that's a fair few hours of play id need to redo, Which I have no intention of doing.

Now, I get STALKER has bugs, In SoC and CoP they can almost be a part of the game and the zone... This one just has bugs. All in all I cannot recommend this game in anyway, which is a shame, theres much potential in this but fails consistently at most of it. Play SoC and CoP instead.

It's understanding that people view this game as the weakest in the series. The criticism that it feels too much like a generic (and even poor) fps from the 2000s, and not enough like a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, with mutants and environmental hazards, is valid. More often than not, the player is tasks with going to clear out a compound of either bandits or paramilitary/faction troops. Some missions go full Call of Duty I/II and have you take out the machine gun nest...
There aren't enough bandages, and some bleeds take 3-4 bandages to stop! Stock up on these unless you want to have to reload over and over to survive fights unscathed so you don't slowly bleed out!
My other biggest gripe with this game is the PDA. Instead of being a continuously developing portion of the gameplay, wherein you're constantly looking for new stashes, new shortcuts, new trading outposts, etc, like in SoC and CoP, in Clear Sky almost everything is revealed to you on your PDA from the start of the game. The exception is stashes, which like SoC and unlike CoP. you can find and they will be empty unless you have a PDA prompt on your map for them, and most of the time in Clear Skies you have to pay a stalker or trader a random amount of rubles in order to get this PDA icon directing you to stashes. It all kind of makes exploration less of a priority, which again, detracts from the Stalker MO.
That being said, I think it is a good prequel, and it does do a better job of faction and world building in terms of voice acting (at least in english, which is nearly non-existent in SoC and has a bunch of untranslated Ukrainian in CoP)
The weapon mechanics have some improvements and some problems. ADSing is now more responsive and feels more realistic, as does moving and shooting at the same time. Weapons can now be upgraded and repaired, which adds to the utility of rubles and encourages seeking sources of income, as well as allows you to slowly build a very nice, customized weapon or two. Weapons are even more inaccurate than in SoC, and weapon durability effects this rng precision even more. This gets to be frustrating quickly, Particularly in the latter half of the game when you are constantly using Vintars (VSS) and this sniper rifle is so inaccurate that your shots are fling 12 ft off of your scope's reticle.

Overall, if you're a big fan of the first game and you'd like to learn more about the factions, this is worth a playthrough. It is probably the shortest (or at least it is the least engaging besides the main story, so you end up wandering less and completing it faster) of the three games, but it does add some nice context to the rest of the lore/story. If you've never played STALKER, avoid this one.

I see some dislike for this game out of some reviewers, and that's understandable. If you are not invested in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series you may not like this. It can be truly difficult at times, but that's part of the experience. This is Simply another great addition to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series. If Call of Pripyat, and shadows of Chernobyl left you wanting more this is it for you. It is the exact excellence I have come to expect from this very Innovative series.
If you are a call of duty run and gun mindless shooter fanboy this game might not be for you.
This, is a Mans game and best played with with some whiskey.......OR to really Get into it.... Cheap Vodka !

this was my first stalker game, play pripyat first imma keep it real with you.

I, a fool played on easy just to figure things out then change it later.
you should know, lower difficulty just makes everything take more bullets to kill
also im pretty sure the starting pistol is bugged as bullets sometimes just yeet outa reality

once you get past the opening stuff, its pretty dam good. but play SoC or CoP first

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this after 12 years, but better late than never. I can't think of any reason to recommend this game. While Call of Pripyat on its own is overall the weaker game, that one is at least redeemed by mods but Clear Sky isn't.

Clear Sky is a prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl that creates plot holes and continuity errors, mostly revolving around Sakharov's apparent dementia and the Clear Sky faction going from the weakest to the most powerful so quickly.

The plot really revolves around shooting, also highlighted by the wild west weapon draw sounds, depth of field applied to reloading, and all climactic moments revolving around large firefights. But the shooting by default is terrible, with rifles literally having worse effective range and accuracy than airsoft guns before maxing them out with upgrades, extreme bullet sponginess allowing for things like unarmed bandits surviving up to three point blank shots from a sawn-off shotgun, the lack of pistol iron sights, the weapon and armor selection in general is pretty weak and the relative balance to each other is too linear, ugly mirrored guns with sound effects that aren't great. It's a weak shooter.

Sure, mods can largely fix this, but then you're left with a mostly weak story, pretty generic quest design, weak survival gameplay, and faction warfare. Not terrible but not enough for me to leave a recommendation. Clear Sky wasn't as heavily modded due to engine instability. No amazing total conversions or anything like that exist to redeem S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky.

Strengths

  • Its technical graphics were top 3 all time in 2008, it also alleviates the dullness of Shadow of Chernobyl's visual style though goes overboard with bloom and depth of field
  • Some good dialogue early on
  • Inherits an interesting setting, but one that misses far more potential than it realizes
  • A-Life system

Weaknesses

  • Weak story with plot holes and continuity errors
  • Rather generic quest design
  • Some of the worst weapon balancing and ballistics you'll ever see in gaming, hence why there's no other game like it. Weapons literally performing worse than airsoft guns isn't a smart way to encourage using its weapon upgrade system. Extreme bullet sponginess and none of this serves to make the game an actual challenge since the end result is still easy, but tedious.
  • Other weapon balancing issues; weapon progression is still too linear with its clear cut best guns, 12 gauge slugs are utterly useless
  • Outfit/armor design contains nonsensical design elements and is lacking in diversity, with every character in the game wearing one of just a few different outfits with no variation, not to mention everyone in The Zone is the same height, weight and gender
  • Broken economy. It is so easy to get rich from selling artifacts and conquer the game pretty early.
  • Some high tier artifacts are way too overpowered, mostly healing and anti-bleeding ones. They will make you an unstoppable God.
  • Unnecessary removal of hunger from Shadow of Chernobyl
  • Emissions don't move anomalies like they're supposed to
  • Lots of bugs remain including more common save game corruption in the last two levels. SRP or a mod that uses it is needed for this game.
  • Some unused, wasted space in its level design and Limansk level could have been much more interesting than it is
  • Overly bloomy art design with too much depth of field, and for a game made by Ukrainians set in Ukraine it surprisingly is lacking in authenticity

By now most people already know about stalker. It's quite a good game, despite bugs and imperfections.
Besides the atmosphere, overall theme and gameplay which make stalker what it is, what I like the most is difficulty settings.
I beat the game at least 2 times on master difficulty, and it wasn't too hard, it seems just appropriate. Human enemies and mutants have the same health, the only difference is they deal a lot more damage. One or two good hits will kill you. Anomalies are more dangerous because they do massive damage as well. Bleeding is much stronger.
When you get better equipment everything balances out, making it an ultimate stalker experience.

Except bugs and gliches, what bothers me the most is poor AI. If it was better the game would be much more difficult on master level.

A group of stalkers first approached the very heart of the Zone-the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, provoking a cataclysm that almost led to a disaster. A massive burst of abnormal energy changes the Zone. There are no more proven and relatively safe roads. The entire levels vanish in the outbursts of anomalies. Stalkers and even expeditions die or are trapped in the missing territories. New territories that have not been known about since the Zone was created appear on the Zone map. The zone continues to be shaken by emissions. The zone is unstable. The anomalous activity is at its maximum.
Changes to the Zone map known to stalkers disrupt the delicate balance of power in the Zone. Among the groupings, there flare up hostilities for the new territories, artifact fields and spheres of influence. No more old enemies or friends – now everyone is for himself. A war of Factions began between the factions.
The main character is a mercenary who, by the will of fate, finds himself at the very edge of the confrontation between the Stalker factions, the Shooter, and even the Zone itself.

Although dated, this whole series has a really unique post-apocolyptic grainy noir kind of feel to it. High replayability. Not the smoothest running game even on systems far exceeding the recommended specs. Just be glad you don't have to deal with the pre patched version. SOC is the most dated but also the most in depth. The other two are better graphically with some pretty good lighting effects for the time but are shorter and more linear

I really loved the first stalker, but this one is a huge mess!
so many bugs it hurts...
-constant voice messages overlapping each other
-AI most favorite grenade spam ... - if there are 10 people and throw at you at the same time... you are a dead man
-faction wars - buggy and broken cant progress the side mission and not worth it
-some attachments are said to work for the weapons, but they arent working
-some armors dont allow you to drag bodies, until you detach them (nowhere stated that you cant)

all this problems are fixed in unofficial patches, but they will require starting the game over again.
i really wished to like this game, but this ruined the experience of the franchise for me...

Clear Sky is often overlooked and said to be the worst of the STALKER series, although there are glitches and exploits its still my favorite release from the series.
The best part is the expansion of the faction system which was driving the narrative.
These factions are all interesting and well developed.
The atmosphere remains as bone chilling as ever, but I would say Shadow Of Chernobyl is more developed in that front.
Gameplay is better than ever with quality music.
The Faction Wars mod which focuses only on the combat between factions is highly recommended after finishing the main game.

While not as good as SoC or CoP, CS still contains the usual Stalker goodness.

For the inexperienced: Download the Complete mod to smooth out some roughness. One you get out of the beginning swamp, the game picks up, so don't give up to quickly. As always, F5 is your friend in Stalker games, so spam it. Have fun or else!

I really wanted to like this game. After Shadow of Chernobyl, I expected future releases to have a bit more polish to them, to be a bit more complete. What I got from this game was the exact opposite.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky isn't a game you play through, it's a game you suffer through. Suffer through the first level after the tutorial, being forced to spam what little medical supply you've found to eat machine gun fire proceeding to the second area because there's no other way, the constant objective chasing, the somewhat incoherent story, the gunplay that leaves you missing 4 of every 5 shots just to suffer a jam on the 6th, the lack of supply and trading points in the later game, the scripted progression effects that punish you for progress in an area by spawning enemies behind you, the constant bleeding from participating in gunfights, the exorbitant prices from traders on gear you'll have to backtrack from the late game with loot to sell to ever afford, the hyper-accurate grenade throws from enemies that'd give Call of Duty: World at War's Campaign on Veteran difficulty a run for its money, radiation pockets placed haphazardly which punish you for exploring or taking unintended paths, an absolute polar shift in artifact availability from SoC, senseless hallucination of pseudodogs which you avoid shooting after understanding they do no damage to save ammo only to find they later do, and finally a conclusive level to the story line that fell short of expectations I couldn't even establish because there's no downtime or supply in the late game for preparation.

If you plan to play this game vanilla, understand that it will get to you, understand the game works against you almost every step of the way, and finally understand that this widely considered the most avoidable title in the series. If you still want to buy and complete it, vanilla or otherwise, then power to you, but I'm content that I'll never have to play it again now that I've finished it. There was just way too much to not like about it, though I still look forward to what Call of Pripyat has to offer.
