The atmosphere, style etc. is remarkable.
It is not a fast paced shooter, but don't judge it for what it is not, but judge if for what it is.
I can only say YES to DOOM 3 and it reminds me on early 2000's good old games.

DOOM 3 is a game that I played way back in 2004 on the original Xbox and like most people, I wasn't particularly impressed. While DOOM 3 was a technical marvel its gameplay was rather mundane and slow, especially since Half-Life 2 came out the same year and completely crushed DOOM 3 in terms of gameplay and scale. But I recently returned to DOOM 3 in the year 2020 to see if its any different and all I can say is that I have a new found appreciation for what ID Software tried to do.
DOOM 3 is a slow, atmospheric take on DOOM. ID Software opted to make a horror game rather than a straight up shooter, they decided to focus on immersion and I would say it worked quite well. DOOM 3 attempts to mix modern level design with the old level design, all of the original DOOM closet scares and collapsing floors are still here but its kind of worked into the modern level design of an actual place that could exist, rather than a straight up video game level. DOOM 3 heavily utilizes its lighting as most of the game is extremely dark, your only way of seeing is with a handheld flashlight which cannot be used at the same time as a weapon. Most people found the flashlight mechanic to be frustrating hence the reason why they removed it in the BFG Edition, I personally had no problem with this and I think it dramatically adds to DOOM 3's atmosphere.
The start of the game is definitely the best part as the atmosphere is on-point with the Mars base descending into chaos and the marine radio chatter giving you an idea of how everyone else is doing, eventually everyone goes quiet and it gives you a genuine feeling of isolation and that you have out lived every other person on the base. It is surprisingly effective and it will really remind you of the beginning of Half-Life 1.
DOOM 3 isn't a perfect game of course, it does out stay its welcome as the endless shooting of the same, slow enemies does get boring but I think it mostly holds up and I didn't feel like I was forcing my way through it. Playing on a high difficultly is definitely recommended as DOOM 3 is notoriously easy. DOOM 3 also has the worst shotgun in video game history, it looks hideous and it couldn't hit the broadside of a barn.
Overall I would definitely recommend DOOM 3 as its a good first person shooter and a piece of gaming history that should be remembered.
Running on a Modern System
For some reason people are claiming that this game doesn't run of modern systems, personally I have no idea what these people are talking about. Vanilla DOOM 3 ran perfectly fine on my Windows 10, i7 CPU, GTX 1080 rig even after I had modified the txt to force the game to run in 1920x1080 resolution. I wouldn't recommend doing this however as vanilla DOOM 3 can be improved with the use of non-gameplay oriented mods.
With all old games it does require some modifying to get the best experience but thankfully DOOM 3 is one of the easiest to run old games I've ever played. Numerous guides claim you have to do a ton of resolution and FOV modding but in reality all you need to do is install DOOM 3: Redux.
DOOM 3: Redux is so easy to install that I can't believe how easy it was. You simply download the latest release, dump it into your DOOM 3 directory and add a launch command to the game through Steam's properties. DOOM 3: Redux visually fixes up the game for modern systems without changing any gameplay elements. DOOM 3: Redux is super easy to install and absolutely essential to playing DOOM 3.
As of February 2020 the game still runs fine.
Difference Between the BFG Edition
You've probably noticed that DOOM 3 has an 'enhanced' edition called the BFG Edition. The BFG Edition did improve DOOM 3 to run on modern systems but they changed various gameplay elements and brightened the whole game up. Not to mention that most mods do not work for the BFG Edition. It is highly debated as to which is the best version but in my opinion the original DOOM 3 is the superior version.

Shawn Green probably figured out space travel or something.
DOOM was amazing, it still is, a game so popular at the time that Bill Gates advertised Windows' new operating system by saying it could play DOOM. I still play DOOM and DOOM 2 from time to time. Not so much Final DOOM because Plutonia Experiment scares me. DOOM is a damn legend at this point, and if you don't like DOOM, then we legitimately can't be friends and I'll probably beat you up at least once before you die.
Now lets fast forward a bit to 2004 when I was still being trailed as a war criminal. After a lot of teasing, and anticipation, Id Software releases DOOM 3, with extra-dimensional giga wizard John Carmack still on board. John Romero went on to make Daikatana and last I heard he was becoming more powerful by the day.
DOOM 3 is a departure from the series, as in it pretends to be a horror game but then lets you tear shit up as fast as it tries to scare you. You play as the Marine, a death lord pretending to be man. The Marine is sent to Mars on mission (Not phobos, for some reason), and is tasked with retrieving a scientist from an abandoned station after he deserted his post.
As soon as you find the man, all hell literally breaks loose and the UAC facility on mars is invaded by demons.
First day on the job and the forces of Hell literally break into our reality and start killing people. Yeah, good job, Rookie.
DOOM 4 is divisive among fans, but I'm on board with saying that...Yeah, its pretty cool. I'm not saying its perfect, but I am saying that DOOM 3 is at least good, if not great at times. It ended up being one of those games I sat down with and then didn't stop until the day was gone and police gave up on trying to find me.
I called it DOOM 4 at the start of that paragraph. That was a typo.
I'm not changing it.
Its funny, because the game starts out as trying to frighten you with constant jump scares and ambushes, but kind of gives up on that later on. You still get some messed up imagery, but it doesn't go as hard later on as it does at the start of the game.
The game isn't really scary, at least to me. Then again I've been dead inside for the last 20 years, so take that as you will.
Exploring the UAC facilities like Mars City and Alpha/Delta labs was fun, but DOOM 3 really got going for me when it starts feeding you ammo like an abusive fetishist feeds their significant other cake. Once you're allowed to play with all your weapons and pick and choose for every encounter, it starts to feel like a classic DOOM game.
If I had any complaint with the weapons its that the Shotgun is probably the worst shotgun in DOOM history. Which to Id standards is a crime that will never be forgiven. Other fans have brought this up, and I'm on board. I guess they might have made it like that so you have to get uncomfortably close, but since you can duck and weave most enemy attacks, it just kind of has you gently caress them with the barrel before blowing their guts out the back of their bodies.
Some levels don't hit as hard. The levels that feature the trites, the upside down skull spider things, stick out in my mind. I'm not afraid of spiders, I just find them annoying. In the end, I just imagined the Marine swearing to himself as he beat stupid looking spider people to death with the battered body of another stupid looking spider person.
You'll also rip all the bosses in this game a new asshole, especially if you take your time to figure out how to get in all of the storage units to get the extra weapons and ammo. There are two in the game hidden behind codes locked to a website that isn't running anymore. But you can find the codes online anyway, so whatever.
DOOM 3 is also ancient by video game standards, so the standard definitions go up to 720p or so. This is easily fixed by going into the .CFG in your main DOOM 3 folder and changing the resolution manually.
Its super easy, like, don't even sweat.
There are a lot of things DOOM 3 fumbles on. The weapon sounds are stock and weak, the shotgun sucks, it isn't really scary, and most of the jump scares are predictable. But when the game just goes “Whatever, we're DOOM now.”, it really kicks major ass. They also have the dumbest reason for the chainsaw being in the game, but it's useful, so I'm okay with it.
I have about 9 hours of playtime in the game, but I left the game running while I was gone so the actual time of completion is more around 7 hours. Servers for multiplayer are still going, but I didn't see anyone playing when I tried, which was unfortunate, but oh well.
If you're looking for a horror game, check it out if you're easily scared. If you're looking to just shoot monsters that deserve it, well its kind of the black sheep of the series now sort of, but its still pretty good. At least I think so.
And you should listen to me.
I am the best.
DOOD 3 gets 8 Hell Knights getting slapped to death by flashlights out of 10.
Heretic II exists. Thats my fact of the day. Its pretty good, you should check it out.

This isn't a doom game. It's a horror game that's themed after DOOM.
But I like it, it's enjoyable, and there are both pros and cons to it, which I will state
the problems:
CONS:
-Enemies are faster than you, always
-shitty flashlight
-really dark rooms
-pointless story, all the UAC had to do was to give dr. petruger (or whatever his name is) more funds to maintain his project.
PROS:
+scary, as much as it tries to be
+really awesome guns, satisfying to use
+good pace of combat
+good combat mechanics overall
+the hard (or hardest) difficulty is an actual challenge, unlike most games
Overall, I'd give this game a 7.6/10
-1 for story
-1 for the dark rooms
-1 for the flashlight
-0.4 for the fast enemies
+1 for the theme, fits doom pretty well
+1 for cool and spooky enemy designs
+1 for the shotguns (god they're so fun)
+1 good atmosphere for the levels, really gets the scare factor going
+1 for co-op mods (not part of the game, but really makes the game enjoyable when you have it)
+1 for the combat, really fun
+0.6 for not being a game version of the movie (as much as it looks like it, thank god it isn't)

This game is a reboot of sorts of Doom and it focuses more on Horror and progressing through the story in the vein of games like Half Life however the Heart and Soul of Doom is still in tact alongside the fast paced gameplay. There are moments when the action slows down so you can find like a keycard or solve a puzzle to progress but these are not often and they are a nice change of pace from the nonstop shooting.
All the guns feel wonderful, the monster design is pretty top notch with all the classic enemies getting a nice new look to them, and the atmosphere this game has with it's ambience, amazing lighting for 2004 and the constant feeling of being alone and surviving agaisnt a Demon onslaught really keeps you your guard for the whole way through and it honestly is just a great experience.
Honestly if you are a Doom fan you should play this game, you will probably like it. It may be a different direction for the franchise but in all honesty it is still very much a Doom game and it's style is similar to that of Doom 2016 but where Doom 2016 is more of an arena action shooter this one is more of a horror action shooter. Seek this out if you can, it is only 5 Dollars on Steam and for that price it is well worth it imo.
Also this game is better than Doom 2 for sure

The Good:
+Animation and voice acting hold up really well even today.
+The story is intriguing and had me reading PDAs, listening to audio logs, and pushed me to progress forward.
+The claustrophobic industrial level design and minimal lighting mix really well.
+I got spooked a couple of times.
The Meh:
~The ending isn't satisfying and leaves on a cliffhanger, though it does fit well with its horror element.
~Yes, it's dark but it's not that bad (I did however have to maximize the brightness on my screen) and it works in the service of the game's mood.
~The last boss feels like its from Doom 2 as it's hard to tell if you are damaging it or wasting ammo.
~Normal difficulty might be too easy; I did die a handful of time but damage taken from enemies is rather low.
~Reloading is a commitment and you can't switch guns while playing the animation.
The Bad:
-Gunplay is pretty lackluster:
..The machine gun is only useful against weaker enemies like spiders and lost souls.
..The chainsaw is nearly useless and I only took it out against zombies and forgot it existed afterwords.
..Doom 3's probably has the worst video game shotgun I've played. Either its spread is too wide or the its damage fluctuates. Whatever I didn't enjoy using it.
..Why even use your fists when you can use your flashlight and never run out of ammo. It just takes up a weapon slot.
-It's almost impossible to dodge zombie soldiers' bullets.
-(Tentacles can hit you through corners apparently).
Summary
While frustrating at times, I couldn't stop loving its atmosphere and visuals (and felt like someone tried to make a realistic Doom movie).
I could easily recommend this game to anyone curious, considering its current cost and especially on sale, though I would note that it's probably not one of better Doom games (I'd probably rank it near Doom 2). Doom 3 is a good horror FPS.

Now that I played it, I'm pretty sure I will keep forgetting it - it's a bloated slog of a shooter, it's not aggressively awful, but it's slow and overstays its welcome by a large margin.
Something that's incredible for me, is that it seems they intentionally decided to make this game look ugly. I'm saying that because in the very same game there are sections where it actually looks decent, you get mars surface with the facilities sticking out from the cliffs and pits on the horizon, you get some nice gothic mess of an architecture in hell, however 90% of the game you see insanely dark industrial looking corridors of the excavation site. The awful looks contribute to the gameplay, since you constantly cycle between the weapon you're using, to a flashlight you have to hold in your right hand. It actually makes the already slow game, even slower, some modders tried to improve it from what I've seen, but the basic package is legit bad.
Story is predictable, not much to say here, a reimagined Doom, with excavation on Mars, where they dug to hell and unleashed hordes of demons, and you're one of the only few survivors, a marine to save the day.
There is some mustache twirling evil doctor (he actually has no hair, but is barely a character), a few workers of the place, and a military captain/sargeant/whatever.
Gameplay itself is an fps with sprint that doesn't lower the weapon, a selection of weapons that you can carry all at once (though you lose all a few times), and a very slow gunplay. You have extremely tight corridors with barely any lights, and any open space besides mars surface, is littered with stuff making it feel cramped either way. You have several automatic weapons with different ttk, the basic one you almost always have ammo for, has like a 2-3 seconds ttk for basic enemies, that's if you don't get hit by auto weapons making your screen shake like it's having a seizure, in which case you do what will be the most useful tactic - peakaboo.
The AI is limited, it usually slowly approaches, the human ones hide behind a covers in some places, and just shoot or lunge at you. There is no management to occupy you during these low speed fights, all the items you pick up around the map, during fight you just select the weapon you have big amounts of ammo for and kill the thing in front of you, and very often f****ing behind you. Some older shooters had this weird fetish of spawning enemies behind you, here they either crawl out of a vent, a secret door opens with guys inside, or they just straight up f****ing spawn, with the hell themed animation, it's a terrible design that should never be justified. I would like to remind that it's still dark as hell, so you barely see the enemies in those pincer attacks.
Another weird decision is for the shotgun to have a spray covering an entire screen with limited pellets, so it only has a powerful kick at point blank.
One more thing is the lore dumps in form of PDAs, you get recordings and mails. Sometimes those containt keys for new sections, or there is a code you need to use in the mails. I don't have a problem with it, but the game's pace was already slow enough with all the other sh**, it probably didn't need more downtime.
It's alright to play for a few hours, but after that you probably will search for a list of levels and notice you're only like at a 3/4 or half of the game, and you will want to just give up and play something either properly scary, advanced and tense, or faster and more fun.
It made me thik of Alpha Prime a few times, that game had much less polish than doom 3, but at least it wasn't as dull, and repetetive as this, making it more worthy of my recommendation, despite being worse on purely technical level.
One thing that is funny to me is that literally 2 years later Monolith made fear, a game that was both scary and incredibly fun to play, while Doom 3 is not scary with its cheap tricks, and is also boring as hell. I believe it would actually be decent if the fat was trimmed significantly, like a lot of levels in those insufferable dark industrial corridors.

Whereas the previous Doom games were pure action against hordes of demons, ID Software decided to present DOOM 3 as a hybrid of action and survival-horror. The graphics, sound, and environment in this game are top-tier for 2004. The story, as revealed by cutscenes, emails, audio logs, and video recordings you collect along the way, is surprisingly rich and detailed. There are lots of quality mods to download for this game as well, most notably Phobos and Classic Doom 3. Since I especially enjoy mods that are funny, I also recommend Infernal Death Orgy, Duck Nukem, Bubba Lego-Tep, X-Mass, and Damnatio Memoriae (episodes 1 and 2).

Unfortunately the game kinda drags in the second half, and the holes in AI begin to show. Most enemies will either just run straight for you or stand in place and shoot. The horror vibes diminish as you realize how formulaic each encounter is. By the time you reach Hell, the difficulty spikes way up and you're suddenly running and gunning like its classic Doom. I wish this meant this section is better, but unfortunately the level design does not accommodate this gameplay switch. Your best option in most scenarios is to kite the big baddies, but the levels are often too claustrophobic and the enemies that spawn behind you hinder your ability to fight effectively. Not fun imo
Overall I would honestly say to skip this one unless you absolutely have to play every Doom title. Its not a terrible game, but the pacing is quite bad, and the ending is annoying to play through. Would I recommend this to other people? Not in 2020, there's better modern Doom games out there, and even the old titles are more fun to play through. If you want dark horror ambiance with your Doom, play Doom 64 first.

Imagine the game like a long series of scripted encounters, which is both to the credit and describe very well the problem with this game.
There are too many good reviews of this game around, that praise it for being technologically advanced (the best PCs of the time couldn't run it at max settings), and it's contribute to gaming is remarkable (i.e. the Dead Space first game clearly takes a lot from Doom 3), however, the game has some problems, even considering the current price.
The character moves slow, you pass 90% of the gameplay with the run button pressed, some weapons are baffling bad but absolutely necessary, and the game doesn't follow the rules that itself has set: enemies will have different HP just to make an encounter more difficult, and this is on top of the huge RNG that some weapons have.
The idea should be to be scary, and I think that even when it came out it wasn't very scary, the main trick is jumpscares, and they get very predictable incredibly soon. On top of that it wants to give you the feeling to be overwhelmed, and that's also why some weapons are very bad.
Imho, if you have to play this game, please do yourself a favor, as soon as you get frustrated, restart the game at a lower difficulty. It will not correct the broken power fantasy, but at least you will not spend as much time just saving and reloading like you would have to do on higher difficulties.
Do not buy, even when discounted: you will want to finish the game, and losing time is worse than losing money sometimes.

Never imagined replaying this game after beating it when it originally launched many years ago, but this is arguably the best experience you can play on the Oculus Quest via SideQuest. The mod is shockingly good and puts almost the entire Oculus store to shame.
It will never make sense to experience this game in pancake mode ever again.
PS. Had to let game run on Steam so I could leave a review. I have several hours clocked in on the Quest and will beat it soon. MUST PLAY IN VR.

Give it a try, even if you prefer the standard Doom formula. Its a good Fps game in the end of the day that stands well onto its ground. Better buy this instead of the BFG edition. BFG edition removes the light management aspect of the game that is a big part of Doom's 3 horror.

On the one hand, it is an incredibly impressive and visually striking experience from one of my favourite franchises in gaming, created by my favourite video game developer of all time in id Software. On the other hand, it is an endlessly frustrating and confusing instalment in an otherwise solid series.
Before i continue, do i recommend DOOM 3? Of course i do. I feel like it's my duty as the average id Software fan to recommend all of their games, but DOOM 3 holds up as a fulfilling gaming experience that provides some pretty fantastic moments. However, out of all id Software games i have played (i haven't yet experienced either Rage games or the Commander Keen games), DOOM 3 is probably my least favourite.
Not to say that it's a bad game. The lighting effects to this day are still wildly impressive, and the level design (probably due to being mostly linear) is incredibly tight, only finding myself lost once throughout the game. To address the elephant in the room, yes the game is dark. It rarely was a problem for me as i only found myself in complete darkness for only short moments and enjoyed the intensity of having to switch between the flashlight and weapons. Speaking of, the weapons are mostly solid. Most complain about the spread of the shotgun, which was very hit or miss for me. Sometimes i enjoyed (again) the intensity of using such an unreliable weapon, and other times i felt myself frustrated and just wanting the damn thing to work.
Sound design is fairly decent. I enjoy the sounds of all weapons minus the fists, and the demon's sounds are all incredible. The rest of the games sounds are all meh.
Now, the thing about this game that really confuses me is the combat, and combat encounters. It may just be a 'me' thing, but i feel like id may have really fumbled with this aspect of the game. Most combat encounters boil down to: walk into room or do thing, demon spawns, kill demon, other demon spawns somewhere else, kill that demon, think you're safe, get hit by other demon that spawned behind you or in a previous room.
For some, this might not sound that frustrating. In fact, it actually works for a while. But when almost every encounter is set up like this, it gets very frustrating. One encounter that comes to mind is during the first trip to hell. After being bombarded with Lost Souls (which remain the worst enemy in all of the DOOM series), a Hell Knight stomps out of a newly opened room. This is fine. You're armed with the wonky shotgun and a chaingun, but you may have used the chaingun ammo to get rid of the lost souls. But it's no biggie, shotgunning the Hell Knight is no challenge. Then, multiple imps spawn all around the room. Okay, not a huge challenge, except your stuck in narrow hallways. Okay, theyre dead, you've picked up some chaingun ammo. Nice. A door opens, you see a mancubus walking down towards you, so you step back to gather up some form of a plan. Then BAM. At the side of you, a cherub. Small, not a lot of health, deals low damage. Ok. Kill it with the chaingun. The another. then another. Spawning at the side of and behind you. Now you're at half health, have no chaingun ammo, and have to shotgun the mancubus. Then, you finally get to progress.
Of course, there are games with worse design, but this encounter set up makes DOOM 3 tiring to play for long sessions, and i found myself barely playing for an hour at a time.
Certainly not a bad game, and i recommend it to all FPS fans, but dont go into DOOM 3 expecting the fast paced gameplay of the games that came before and after, and don't expect many combat encounters that feel fresh and interesting.

Doom 3 was one of the most anticipated and hyped games ever, but when it was released in August 2004, it was sandwiched between two similarly hyped-up fps, namely Far Cry, released in March that year, and of course Half-Life 2, which came out in November. And while i was deeply impressed by Far Cry‘s lush and vast jungle islands with their massive open-endedness and seemingly limitless tactical freedom, and Half-Life 2‘s smooth and varied gameplay and innovative integration of its physics engine, Doom 3 left me comparatively cold. Between Far Cry and HL2, Doom 3 with it’s slow pacing, restrictive leveldesign and predictable, tiresome jumpscares and cheap monster closets looked more like a pitiable, only mildy scary Haunted House attraction set up between two adrenaline-pumping extreme rollercoasters at the local funfair.
If this would be a purely objective review, we could end here, because that‘s what Doom 3 is when compared to its contemporary contestors as well as all previous and subsequent Doom games: It’s a solid, but highly formulaic shooter, that has nothing special to offer, apart from a handful of well placed jumpscares and (for the time) impressive lighting and shadow effects.
Blame it on my nostalgia, but my feelings for Doom 3 changed heavily over the years until someday it became my favorite Doom game and still is today. Out of all three big titles from 2004, Doom 3 seemed to have aged the least for me. Over the years it became pretty obvious that Far Cry‘s leveldesign was much more linear than it seemed initially, and when F.E.A.R. and Call of Duty 4 came out, HL2 suddenly didn’t seem to be so cinematic anymore. But Doom 3 was almost completely unfazed by all those prominent new competitors. If anything, they only helped emphasize Doom 3‘s strengths even more: In a time where FPS got more and more overwhelmingly bloated with huge open-worlds and repetitive sidequests and collectibles (Thanks Far Cry!), or tried to always top each other with even bigger spectacle and exaggerated scripting and became completely absurd in the process (Nice one, Half-Life!) Doom 3 remained refreshingly modest, simple and „Old-school“.
Doom 3 is basically the Lemmy Kilmister (RIP!) of fps. It just doesn’t f*ck around. It gives you some huge guns, sends you to a devasted research facility on Mars where sh*t got f*cked up, and tells you to shoot the hellish demons. It doesn’t get much simpler than that and that’s a good thing. Doom 3 might not have the breathtaking pacing, epic large-scale battles against two dozen enemies at once and superfast gameplay of the previous and subsequent Doom games, but the basic premise is completely the same, just with a slightly different approach. The additional fact that (in contrast to every other Doom game!) Doom 3 at least tries to tell a somewhat decent story and manages to maintain a pretty strong atmosphere the whole time, combined with at least somewhat believable level design, is often overlooked (if not outright ignored!), but in fact makes Doom 3 not only a very special entry in the franchise, but also my personal favorite Doom game.
The pathetic attempts of it’s expansion „Resurrection of Evil“ to be more like HL2 (The useless Grabber!) are a bit debatable, but the main game is just underrated in retrospect and i dare say almost timeless due to its oddly satisfying simplicity. For its absolutely meager price (currently 5 Euros), it is a must-buy for everyone and a downright mandatory title for every well sorted game collection.

doom fans always make fun of doom 3, throw it to the side and laugh because their favourite doomtoober didn't like it.
those that actually sat down to play and enjoy doom 3 realise that this game was absolutely incredible. not only from a technological standpoint, but also its atmosphere and horror elements. people are afraid of change, but this took the series in an incredibly unique direction.
doom 3 is up there with PS1 doom in my favourites, because doom works well as both a fast paced action game and a slow, survival horror game where you cling to every last bullet and shell in fear of whatever could be around the next corner.
still absolutely worth a play today.

I highly recommend getting the Doom 3 Golden Edition mod because this mod improves the game a lot, and made my experience a lot better. Here's the video about the mod, with the download link in the description.

This game is different than the other Doom games, it is less about rushing through the level and killing everything in sight like the 2016 and Eternal games and plays more as a survival horror like Resident Evil. It makes you approach everything slowly and you are more scared of the swarm of enemies that surround you than they are of you.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I think DOOM 3 is better than both DOOM 2016 and Eternal. The tension and creep factor in this game is top notch. DOOM 3 is proof that even with an arsenal of 15 high powered guns equal to those carried by the Colonial Marines, a game can be terrifying. DOOM 3s atmosphere is nearly flawless. And there have been moments I have actually been on the edge of my seat uneasy at some of the stuff you encounter in this game. The first hour of this game is hair-raising as you walk through the pitch-black metal corridors of an isolated research base on Mars surrounded by endless gunfire, shouting and panic coming through your radio feed, mutilated bodies and blood spattered walls, and the endless army of Hell. You are a average Joe soldier in this game, and not some roided-out demi-god immortal superhero who can tear giant demons to pieces in seconds with his bare hands. You are up against evil forces beyond yourself, and mankinds comprehension. All you have is your wit and your guns. And anything beyond that is sheer grit and toughness. For that reason I like the DOOM Marine much more than DOOM Slayer. The stakes are so much higher for this character as you are the sole force for good in what stands between salvation and total darkness for humanity. Doom 3 is a solid gold medal, seal of approval, badass 10/10. They really do not make games like this anymore. Because somewhere along the way someone forgot about the incredible experience DOOM 3 and Dead Space provided and declared horror games are only scary if you're some wussy ass guy without a gun like in Outlast who can't do shit to protect himself. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, H I G H L Y, recommend DOOM 3. Two thumbs up. This is a classic horror title that needs to be experienced.

This iteration of the franchise holds up really well today on PC, I would suggest installing the Enhanced Edition mod that can be found easily online that will allow the game to run on modern hardware and resolutions of your choice.
I was gushing at the dynamic lighting that was implemented in Doom 3, and had forgotten how well the use of shadows were used in this game. I also very much enjoyed the horror elements throughout as well as the music.
The weapons are a lot of fun, but can get clunky after you've played Doom 2016 and Eternal, but this was the early 2000s, things were different back then, and much simpler.
The campaign does drag on a fair bit and I was frustrated by the tight corridors after a while. Aside from that, It was a nice stroll down memory lane. I would recommend it for a replay and for newcomers.

Ayyyyye! Back at it again for another review...I know, I know, I was gonna get to Travis Strikes Again. But hey, I've had this game on the backlog for a while now and actually wanted to play it thanks to Civvie 11...so yeah, thanks, Civvie. Anyways onto the review:
The Story
Well, the good ol' UAC is up to their usual shtick of screwing things up with scientific experiments and portals when they don't know the heck they're doing...and of course that turns into absolute chaos and you, a lone Marine (and a few other NPCs that don't make it) have to fight your way out of the once advanced, safe, complex, and futuristic Mars base against hell's forces and the evil will of Dr. Betruger...yeah, there's some subtle lore about the world in PDAs and Video Discs too, but otherwise, that's the entire story. Fine enough I suppose for a game of its time and again Id games (asides from their newer ones) never really focused on story all that much, anyways. Solid B in story, in my eyes.
The Gameplay
A much different beast compared to any Doom games both before and after this game. Slow, survival-horror-like gameplay (but more action-horror in reality than anything else) with a lot of the classic Doom tropes, finding keys, unlocking doors, finding your way around such a large complex place, all while managing your health and ammo. It's simple, but the combat is fun once you get the hang of it and learn all of the enemies' patterns (even if things like the monsters leaping and cornering you is still pretty annoying at times because of the level designs and jerky enemy placement.) It's fun to see how quickly and efficiently you can kill demons with shooting as few bullets as possible and taking as little damage as possible. I haven't tried multiplayer yet (as of writing this review since there's no active servers that I can see as far as I know), but from what I've seen from online footage, it looks pretty fun.
The Visuals
The graphics at least for this original version are...alright. For a 2004 game, I'm sure compared to Half-Life 2 at the time, it was pretty stellar seeing all of the atmospheric lightning, gorgeous particle effects, and usage of various colors to make locations look and feel different. The human models are....eeehhhh, they...mostly haven't really aged well, again, for 2004, they were probably neat, but the quality of the models now is a little distracting. The monsters are all pretty nice and distinguished from each other, at least for when you need to know which Demon is which in-combat. The environments are all nicely detailed and the base overall looks and feels lived-in due to just how many objects and details are crammed into it all. Overall, A- for the graphics.
The Sound Design
Well, asides from the absolutely BANGING opening/ending theme by Tweaker, there's not much music to speak of. In all honesty, I think music would've made the experience a little tense (even if it was music done by someone say Aubrey Hodges, who did FANTASTIC music work for Doom 64 and the PS1 Port of Doom 1), so the absence of music really in keeping the player on-edge and nervous, and makes them more alert when hearing a monster's screams nearby. Speaking of the monsters, all of them have identifying noises that make sure you KNOW which one is which, which was definitely a good thing cause I always knew when I pull the shotgun out on an Imp when I would hear their screams, or my minigun and or grenades when hearing the groans of the Zombieman and their gunfire....screw the minigun guys, seriously. The voice-acting is quite nice too, even if the quality of the sounds in this game are...360p-ish sounding (which might be something that was changed in the BFG Edition that I wasn't aware about, we'll see when I get to it and just play it for the Lost Levels.) Overall, I'd give the sound design a A-, decent enough, it's just aged a little bit in the sound quality.
The Verdict/Conclusion
While (vanilla) Doom 3 has aged in some ways in terms of its presentation, sound quality, and some bits of its gameplay, I'd say that Doom 3 is still definitely worth playing, especially if you're a Doom fan and or a fan of survival horror shooters. It definitely kept my attention the whole way throughout its 18 hour campaign for me.
That's all I gotta say really. I'll write my own review for the DLC/Expansion, Resurrection of Evil when I finish that (which probably won't be long from now considering HowLongToBeat.com gives it around a 4-6 hour completion time on avearge...only took two extra hours on this game with its 16-hour average. BFG Edition...we'll have to wait and see, since I'm only playing Doom 3: The Lost Mission which literally like 2-2.5 hours long...man that'll be a short game to play through.)
Now that I've given your mission briefing...get out there and get to killing some demons, Marine! Hell's forces ain't gonna kill themselves!
[Edit: Oh, also for this version of the game, if you want something a little more vanilla that doesn't COMPLETELY change how the game looks or plays all that much other than letting you run the game at modern resolutions and upscaling some textures, in-game text, and other stuff. I recommend going for Doom 3 Enhanced Edition
Also, like I did for my RoE review of March 26th, 2022, I also enabled comments for people wanting to share their opinions and other mods to help people run this game, I'm a little bit of a purist unless it's like Blood II: The Chosen-level broken or something.]

Unfortunately, that’s where Doom 3’s strengths somewhat end.
The gameplay is quite underwhelming. The problems don’t start immediately, but once you get the shotgun. The shotgun is a pretty poorly designed weapon, but is not bad as people say. In fact, it can one-shot the most common of the enemy roster, and is the cheapest ammo you get throughout the entire game. It only becomes less helpful as commandos start becoming frequent appearances. Otherwise, this actually brings me onto two different points, but let’s start with the very immediate one; the enemies are are too easy to kill. This might not seem like a big deal, but this is one thing that holds back Doom 3’s horror aspect; you can’t feel scared of most of the enemies because they die to a single shot, and are easy to get into point-blank range. Often because many enemies lack ranged attacks, or because their range doesn’t dissuade you from trying to close the gap. The undead zsec are some exception, but often have a similar problem to melee enemies because they can be easily provoked into approaching by having line of sight broken and allowing the player to hide behind a corner. The shotgunner included. The only enemies that are properly dangerous enough at such close range are the commandos (both types, as the chaingunner is much quicker on reaction than the zsec officers upon sighting the player), the hell knights due to health and accompanying other demons, revenants because of their missiles and actually somewhat dangerous melee attack, and the mancubus. The rest of the cast is relatively easily exploited by the shotgun’s maximum damage output, and lack the responsiveness to dissuade its use. Out of the 16 monsters (not including boss monsters, of course), only about 4 seem to pose a threat to dissuade the shotgun’s use. They are designed, of course, for a horror toned game, unsurprisingly. However, the shotgun does not reflect the design of a horror game; it is too effective, despite the exaggerated spread ridiculously hindering its effective range beyond that of melee (which is why I say the gun is still poorly designed, despite it being useful within the game.)
My next point is another problem the shotgun reflects; your arsenal is absolute overkill for about 95% of encounters in this game. This is no problem at the early game, necessarily, but even then, you never hurt for ammo. The only weapon I struggled with, ammo-wise, was the chaingun, up until Hell, where it is easy to stock up after. On veteran. Part of the problem is the shotgun being so useful and cheap, often allowing you to simply save on weapons that otherwise have better range. Shotgun can be used for most encounters of imps, occasionally pulling the AR/pistol out to deal with trites where the fire rate, and then only pulling out the chaingun or plasma gun to deal with Demons in group encounters, which can also be handily dealt with a shotgun if you are properly spaced. The BFG is often unnecessary, do to the low number of enemies often encountered; only really an appreciative panic button against pairs of Hell knights in tight spaces. Often, it is sufficient to simply unload your plasma or chaingun onto overwhelming groups. Health is also hardly a long-term concern. Armor is a resource that will often outnumber your HP. Remember when I said that the shotgun’s design is not complimentary of the enemy’s design for horror? Well, the rest of the arsenal compounds this issue. In fact, the doom marine himself does not control like a protagonist in a horror game. He controls, rather, like the protagonist of a much faster paced FPS… Like the first two DOOM games… The marine can outmaneuver just about every enemy in the game with ease, despite sprint being treated as a semi-limited resource. This makes one question if the game is meant to be horror or action. If it’s both, it is quite honestly the worst marriage of both.
The level design is also annoying, and enemy placement is also cheap and annoying. If you enter a corridor with an enemy teleporting into your view, there is always one right behind you to catch you by surprise and get a hit before you properly realize. Imps will be hidden right behind doors or around corners to instant-lunge at the player with an attack that is difficult to react to. Things like this feel like a sad way to compensate for the fact that enemies are otherwise so nonthreatening in many scenarios. Either way, these sorts of ambushes are not fun, and are more annoying than startling, let alone scary. The last leg of the game, after Hell, is also just awful. Structurally, it only serves to make the game longer and for no real benefit.
The narrative presentation is worthless. Despite the cut-scenes and dialogue in game, they fail to give any motivation as to what the player is working towards aside from surviving. So, after the initial invasion, the game lacks any sense of urgency. Everyone in the game dies around you throughout, so it never feels as though there are proper stakes to anything. Other than for yourself, I suppose. Before Betruger talks to you directly, a lot of character dialogue and cut-scenes seem to take place separately from you, making the marine seem uninvolved. And, Betruger does not directly acknowledge you until several hours into the game.
I actually don’t really understand a lot of characters. Sgt. Kelly doesn’t trust Elliot Swann, and only assumes the worst, for… no actual reason? It doesn’t really seem as though Kelly is allied with Betruger, and he doesn’t so much as imply such when he becomes the Sabaoth. Betruger is also kind of stupid for an antagonist. Like, for all he knew, the marine probably didn’t even suspect him as the mastermind behind hell’s invasion (especially since both cutscenes where he talks with swan happen outside of the vicinity of the marine, the latter one being far from viewable from the marine.) He could have just not contacted the marine directly, but does just to taunt him and tell him he won’t let him go any further. And, before the marine even properly knows as to what the soul cube does or is, he is like “you will NEVER find the soul cube, because I put it in HELL!” Which… only tells the marine it must be important, before he actually realizes what it’s for? Why would you tell him this? And, then later… Betruger sends the marine to Hell… the place he sent the soul cube to so… he wouldn’t be able to get it… So. Huh? Like, how did this guy manage to hide his intentions from the rest of the UAC. He basically sets himself up as the most suspicious person on the planet (which doesn’t say THAT much because the planet is Mars) and only one person decided to finally contact the UAC about his strange shenanigans and someone ONLY decided to send a distress signal to Earth when it was basically just about too late? It’s not the same as Olivia Pierce who managed to essentially run a corporate cult to go along with her plan. Also, if Betruger can just… cast spells like he did to turn one guy into an undead commando, why… doesn’t he just cast a similar spell onto the marine? He’s not like the DOOM slayer with superhuman powers, he’s just a normal ass guy who’s gotten lucky for most of the ride. Betruger is an idiot.
Also, the bosses are lame. This game’s cyberdemon is easily the lamest version. It’s also the lamest final boss in the franchise, and that actually says a good amount, frankly.
3/10
