This game is both good and awful...
-Barely any Checkpoints during Mission so if you die after 15 min into the mission you have to play it all from the start again.. there were many rage quits..
-Shooting Gameplay is awful and feels like a 2004 game and it is a bad copy of The Godfather from EA 2006 which was excellent
-Graphics looks poorly for a 2010 game especially if you compare it to GTA 4 (2008) Driv3r (2004) and Uncharted 1 (2007)
-Story is very blank and predictable, almost no thrilling moments

+The City looks very good both in winter and summer time
+Cars are nice, there is a lot of customization
+Driving feels great
-but you can't Drive By

I played the Classic version because it looks better and is less of space (8GB) (Definitive Edition 40GB)

Finished it 9 years ago on an X360 and it was an amazing game. Never played it on a PC until now when I saw it works in Proton.

Mafia 2 is a sequel to the legendary Mafia set in 1940s that puts the player to the role of Vito Scalleta, a man of arms who was released from army for a few months after a bullet incident. After he meets his best friends, mother, sister and a few strangers, he finds himself in a situation where the only way forward is making a lot of money. Of course, he needs money that only a mafia can offer, that starts a journey from the bottom to the top.

The story is very interesting, still above average and storytelling always managed to keep me hooked to the screen regardless of whether it was my first or second playthrough. Graphics still holds up pretty well, everything is as good as I remember.

Fortunately and unfortunately this is the last decent Mafia game as it was made by the original Czech developers with their unique passion and sense for amazing details including a top-notch CZ voice acting. After the brand was transfered to USA, Mafia became a generic shitty open world game so if you're deciding between this and Mafia 3, definitely go for 1 and 2.

The game runs amazingly well on Linux using Proton 5.0, all I had to do was replace the exe as described here https://www.protondb.com/app/50130

So i just finished the game 2 minutes ago and i'm still crying!(never played it before)
And i have to say..i've never experienced a game like this..never!
Everything worked like a clock..graphics،atmosphere،Incredible soundtracks..and this goddamn story...Goddamn story!!!!
You know،i've never cried for a character before(even in rdr2 or cod mw2 or bioshock infinite!) But this game made me cry!
The story is the most noble part of the game that u cant even predict what's gonna happen after 2 minutes!
Anyway...If u want a game that put u in the middle of ww2،the middle of china town،the middle of a fight،the middle of crossovers the middle of loyalties،the game that make u cry while u are laughing، then u are in the right place!

This game looks great at almost 10 years old playing it in 2019. The performance is great too with only one issue with the Physx graphics option. Which I think can be fixed by installing the older driver version but I just kept it turned off. It supports 4K resolutions and it looks great in 4K while the sound is also pretty awesome with some great music from the period.

The game world is very immersive with a lot of attention to detail and some fun collectables. The story is pretty good even if it does feel rushed in places and they could have spent more time developing some elements. It feels like a collection of elements from many different gangster movies which is fun to see. It’s a genre style story too which doesn’t take itself too seriously with some over the top violence.

The weapons are fun to use, they sound great even if the animations are a little bit clunky. Actually the animations in general are a little bit rough around the edges and are maybe one of the few things that actually do show this games` age. Walking up stairs for example is the same as walking on a flat surface which looks hilarious but can break immersion.

The missions are immersive and fun to play through with one particular moment half way through that is really cool and unexpected. The story does start to get a bit repetitive but there are some genuinely interesting cutscenes and characters along the way. The music is genuinely awesome with classic tunes from the period that made me want to listen to more from the individual artists. The story does end very abruptly though and it actually feels like they didn’t expect people to play past a certain point because they just wrap it all up so awkwardly in the last few missions.

Overall Mafia 2 is a very well made and fun to play game which does some specific things very well. Even if it is lacking in depth and content compared to other open world games.

Epic masterpiece.

Two-word review done :P
On a modern PC, some tweaks are necessary to make the game playable, but it is very well moddable.
Heavily story-driven and with great characters and gameplay. One of the all-time classics.

Such a shame that 2K destroyed the 3rd game completely. This game really deserved a continuation by the original devs.

Mafia II is the best game of it's times and even some modern games can't keep up with it. I'm glad for the definitive edition, thou I think they could have made her a little more special than the classic edition. Really enjoyed the games even though i have a little played hours, we played it in my friends place. Great atmosphere, even greater memories, fantastic reactions, would totally recommend this game.

274 hours of my life and I finished the game three times - that's what I've sacrificed since the release of Mafia 2.

I have nothing to complain about this game, it was great in all aspects. I registered some complaints that this game is quite short (my younger self also complained).. but if the game runs on a difficult difficulty, achievements are hunted and both DLCs are going through, the problem is solved.
The realism of the Mafia series is a well-known fact, but I still have to remind you of this big plus, because the feelings while I have to go refueling a car, how a policeman fines me for speed, as a pedestrian fu*ks (bounces) on the sidewalk, because he slips in winter ice.. these are the things that give the gaming experience a new dimension.

Soundtrack of the main menu - chills. 95%

This game was something I played but wasnt into as a kid. My brother did all that while I just ran around killing people for no reason on our xbox 360. I recently brought this game as it was cheap and I wanted to give it a go now that I am older. The story is breathtaking Vito and Joe's characters are both really well done. The cross-hair is something that does take a while to get used to as it is in the top middle of the screen rather then the middle, In my play through I
encountered zero bugs but I did play the original game and not the new edition. This game is a masterpiece and it should go down in history as one of the best story driven and gameplay ridden games. 10/10

Oh man what can I say, I absolutely enjoyed myself playing this. What a thrilling journey this game takes you on! The story was fantastic, the twists and turns along the way, THIS is what you call a TRUE mafia game. 100% better than the first one by a mile in all aspects. It's a shame the definitive edition is buggy otherwise I would have played that but regardless the classic version is just as brilliant. The fact the game has realism elements to it such as fuelling up cars when they run out of gas, changing clothes when they get dirty, eating/drinking to replenish health and energy and even cops trying to pull you over for speeding.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself playing this without a doubt!
CHOP CHOP, VITO!
Summary:
A fantastic mob story held back by a slightly above average game.

Review:
Mafia II, the sequel to one of my favorite classic sandbox mob games, takes a few steps back from its predecessor while taking quite a few bigger steps forward.

In this game you play army veteran Vito Scaletta, freshly returned from combat and reunited with his friend and partner in crime, Joe, looking to make it in organized crime in 50s Empire City.

Sounds exciting, and at times it can be, but oddly the game is more about the story than the game. You get the standard fare: commit crimes, steal cars, take on missions, meet new friends and enemies, etc.

While the possibilities are there, the game itself ultimately feels very empty. Too many missions, for example, require a lot of driving, which is to be expected, but the car chases are few, and instead you get to chauffeur characters to places and listen to a lot of long exposition as you go. So much of this game is just talking and driving, and while this could have been a good opportunity to advance the story, it's mostly irrelevant banter or redundant instructions on the mission.

When the action kicks in it's a mixed bag. Sometimes enemies will inexplicably rush into your line of fire, or wisely move to cover or even try flanking. The battles themselves were easy, some with parts scripted in to tell story more than engage the player. Some of the environments were very impressive, be they hotels or factories, a lot of detail went into putting them together and it shows. Unfortunately these also fall prey to the games sense of linearity, funneling the player through corridors more than opening set pieces for epic gunfights.

The city itself can at times also feel frustratingly linear, far more so than the original Mafia. I enjoyed that there were indoor places to visit, not nearly enough games in this genre do this, but they were sparse and repetitive.

As a story, Mafia II shines brightest. The writing and acting are some of the finest I've ever experienced, giving some really flavorful performances that bring the characters to life despite the stiff game play. Some plot twists were predictable, a few (one in particular) were so surprising I still see people talking about it all these years later (and even work to change it through modding). You'd have to care about the story to be affected by it, and clearly some people really were, which is a testament to the writing, acting, and direction taken here. If this had been a movie or a mini series it'd rank right up there with the classics.

I've got to give some praise here for Joe Barbaro. His story arc, writing, and a great performance by Robert Costanzo make him the stand out character. His tacky, crass, hot tempered, self-indulgent, recklessness are a perfect offset to Vito's more subdued, straight-laced character. As a character, I actually liked the big dumb ape, and wish more games would take a note that this is how to write goof-balls into games like these without overdoing it.

I really enjoyed the OST as much as the licensed music. Lots of brassy tracks give that classic mob action feel that doesn't try being contemporary as much as it succeeds in being classic. The sound effects were serviceable, but nothing great. What struck me most were that some of the guns sounded like they were pulled straight out of old 50s and 60s films. Deliberate or coincidental, it was a nice touch.

There were some bugs and glitches that were rare, but pretty severe when they happened. Stuttering was one of the most common and seemed to happen randomly. In a couple of mission and free roam I experienced some severe graphical glitches, where things would stretch out or there would be large black triangles all over the screen kind of buzzing around. In one mission, The Wild Ones, this was especially problematic, and restarting my computer seemed to fix the issue somewhat, but I had to play parts of that mission literally in the dark. Crashing to desktop was also an issue, albeit infrequent.

This game was played with all settings maxed out using an Intel i7-8700k, 32gb DRAM, Samsung Evo SSD, 1080ti, running at 3440x1440. FMV scenes were 16:9, which is pretty standard, and why I wish they'd gone full cut-scene as those were 21:9 and rendered excellently.

Pros:
 • Memorable characters
 • Plays nice with ultrawide
 • Controller friendly
 • Unique theme
 • Unusual collectibles
 • Impressive environments
 • Great presentation of the classic wiseguy
 • Challenging without being unfair
 • Great writing & plot twists
 • Joe Barbaro

Cons:
 • Some severe bugs
 • Can be tedious
 • Some missions overly long and boring
 • Open world seems empty and skin deep
 • Padded with backtracking
 • Enemy AI is a mixed bag
 • Progression ending bugs late in the game
 • Mediocre DLC
 • Some achievements are asinine

Verdict: 7/10

A classic open world game that could have been a masterpiece if the game play was as good as its presentation, writing, and acting.

The main story is great and the cinematics are really nice. The DLCs are awful and frustrating, the cops are all over the place, you can't move without being shot from every direction, the missions are mostly based on pure luck.
Mafia 2 is one of those rare games that makes me feel like a young kid again, itching to come back home from school just so I could boot up that one particular game and keep playing it. It was made during an era where videogame devs knew what the hell they were doing and they knew how to do things right.
The game follows the story of Vito Scaletta, a protagonist which you see gradually change from being an average thug to a respected Mafia member. Vito is often paired with his close buddy Joe Barbaro, one of the, if not THE BEST sidekick character in any videogame ever created. These 2 go together like pepperoni on pizza and if you don't like pepperoni pizza, you're dead to me.

The story itself manages to keep you entertained through the whole experience. Its cleverly written with the occasional twists and turns and the characters are all fleshed out to help with the narrative. The voice actors did a spectacular job with making these characters sound great and unique, especially Joe Barbaro and Leo Galante. While the main story is usually dark, there are a lot of humorous moments too which help to lighten the mood.

The gameplay, both the driving and shooting, is harder than your average Open-World TPS game. The enemy's bullets are almost as lethal as your own bullets so if you run around recklessly, you'll only have yourself to blame when you're quickly gunned down. Driving also plays a big role in the game and its been tweaked a lot to provide a fun experience with a lot of feedback to it. Drive off a ramp and you'll see how the car bounces a little when you land again. The game is packed with small details like these and they help make the overall experience much MUCH better.

The game is pretty linear with a sense of open world applied to it. You're constantly progressing the story and you're always inside a main story mission but if you wish to explore the city you can avoid the mission marker and browse clothing, car or gun shops at your leisure. Unfortunately due to this, there aren't any side activities to do but the city still manages to feel alive and atmospheric due to how the NPCs behave and the car radio occasionally switching to the news channel describing actual events happening to the city.

The realism factor is something I gotta describe separately. Cops in this game will react if they catch you speeding or bumping into another car. It sounds tedious and like it will become an inconvenience but it actually works in a really simple way which helps make it fun. You don't need to constantly obey the law, you can always choose to slow down only when you spot a cop car on your radar. However if you're in the mood for some action, you can always keep speeding and outrun the cops. The game allows you to do that too without penalizing you too much, I think it actually penalizes you too little as cops won't remember your license plate or outfit.

Now this game does have its own flaws. No game is perfect.

The Classic version of this game has a couple of issues such as random FPS drops when using Apex PhysX, tailing missions rarely refusing to progress which happened to me once, uncapping the FPS leading to pretty much a lot of problems etc. However, all these issues can be easily resolved by a simple google search and tweaking some settings ingame.

Apart from bugs, I felt like the game was artificially trying to extend its length after going through like 3/4 of the story by making you constantly drive from one point to another with long distances in between. Nothing interesting happens between these drives as you're mostly alone in the car with no dialogue to keep you interested.

The DLCs are another issue. In the Classic Release you get them with the base game but unlike the main game, they are much worse in quality. 2 of them are downright horrible with timed and score based missions and feel nothing like the main game. The 3rd DLC, Joe's Adventures is a little better as it actually allows you to play parts of the main game's story through Joe's eyes. You still get some timed and score based missions here but you'll also get some story and cutscenes so its a little better than the other 2 DLCs. And you DO get to play as Joe so... Y'know...

This game is a big part of my (and a lot of others') childhood. Its as fun to play now as it was back then. Its got great characters, a kickass story, challenging combat and graphics that still look good to this day. It has a couple of flaws but the overall quality of the game easily pushes those flaws aside and spotlights what is basically a great 10-12 hours experience. Get this game and play it. Do it! DO IT NOW!

(Just don't play the Definitive Edition please. Just don't. Its garbag- no wait, no its not garbage. Its a big dumpster fire!)

Mafia 2 still ranks up very high on the list of games that have great cinematic storytelling.

Such amazing variety in the missions that it always feels fresh to play through them, beautiful world, vibrant scenery, great soundtrack, deep characters and a very gripping story about crime and family.

Pros:

+ The way the police runs over 10 people just to catch you because you killed 1 guy with your car is hilarious.

+ Smashing your car to stuff can be fun if it happens at the right time.

+ Engaging cutscenes and story.

+ Good acting and voice acting.

+ Main Menu theme is memorable.

+ Car destruction physics are good for a 2010 game.

+ i like some of the dialogues.Even though some of them are unnecessarily edgy.

+ Hitting polices car slowly won't make them crazy like in some games where they kill you instantly.

+ Driving is realistic and fun depending on how you look at it. (subjective)

+ Each car handles differently.

+ The world is not built around only you. You're not the only one who can crash a car or get chased by police, even though it's mostly you.

+ many interesting details in the city like the hot dog guy, shoe shiner etc. that seem to be hidden from a player who only plays the main story (12 inches of pleasure right here, foot long, foot long, foot long!)

Cons:

- Bugs. Game-breaking bugs like the camera not following the player no matter how many times you reload the game, getting stuck under the city map and falling infinitely, etc.The worst thing about them is most of these bugs will require you to reset your playthrough altogether.. So basically good luck.

- So much filler driving, walking at a really slow pace and little shooting in the main game. Good thing i like driving at least.

- Boring and annoying fist fights. There are missions where the whole gameplay is about walking at a snail's pace and simply right clicking near 5 guys that all look the same.

- Jimmy's DLCs are lazy and disappointing (They feel like cut side missions from main game copy pasted with no meaning or cutscenes behind them, besides the main character there's no dedicated model for your enemies, even the last bad guy looks like a random fat italian guy you can find in the city's sidewalk).

- Even Joe's Adventure DLC is not great but at least not in the same way as the first 2, at oeast the missions have abit more depth gameplay wise and don't come off as lazy. It still lacks the story amd cutscenes for the most part and almost all DLC missions have this timer and arcade theme to them which wasn't really necessary for a game like this imo.

- DLC missions range from above average to extremely annoying. Unfortunately it's mostly the latter since the environments they take place in wasn't really designed for that specific mission.

- it's so overrated for people who haven't played it originally in 2010. It's a fun game but i wouldn't call it masterpieces.

- The scarce amount of checkpoints and saves make you feel like the game was made by 2002 standards.

- You can open your cars trunk but you can't do really anything with it!!

- Pedestrian's reactions to your driving is unrealistic, for a game that has realistic mechanics, they throw their bags/umbrellas and even sometimes purposely jump in rront of your car because you were driving fast!! And then you get chased by police.

- finally, no side quests and free roaming in the main game, and the wanted poosters collectibles are lame.

But overall if was fun. I'd rate 7/10 because of the many annoying game-breaking glitches i encountered, otherwise 8.5/10.
Just a heads up, if you compare this to GTA, it's probably shit, but on it's own it's alright.

The world is fabulous. I love the 50's architecture and cars. I probably have 5000 hours across years of computers and I still play regularly. This game will never be outdated.

Joe's Adventure is so much better than any of the other DLCs.

This would have been absolutely great if they had programmed in a reason to amass wealth. You can buy clothes and super-tune any car you want to steal. Other than that, if you want to just cause chaos in free roam there really isn't anything to work towards.

It's fun to antagonize the cops and see how long you can stay alive.

It's a shame they never released a mob boss DLC where you climb the syndicate ladder.

Another thing they might have explored is playable relationships. Imagine rivals trying to get to you by going after your best girls.

Great game. Could have been a lot greater.

While Mafia II Definitive Edition felt like garbage refarted edition, original still hold up really well without issues. Except did encounter bug with NPC's that they couldn't open door as they should, so had to push them aside and open doors for them and sometimes they kind of warped to right position with doors.

Story is really good in Mafia II and it's base game is true gem from my view, this is 3rd time have gone through it and think appreciated it most during this time, 2nd play was basically a run which left poor impression over the game even if first left good one. Voice acting is really good and you like the likable characters and unsurprisingly enough dislike the ones you shouldn't like (Luca the dong gurgler). Amount of detail when you come back to US after war is really nice and gives idea of living community and people, of course it's not kept up like that around city, but overall people feel like people through the game.

Gameplay is your familiar TPS where you go in cover shooting and tooting. Cars feel different and change to more modern ones due how story works. Good lot of pistols, shotgun, rifles and smgs, molotovs/grenades etc go wreak havoc among your enemy forces around the city.

Overall it's great game and gives money's worth, well maybe not with the new version, but at least does with the Classic.

DLCs or semiexpansions were experienced now for the first time and think gameplay time was around 50/50 for base game and 3 DLCs. DLCs consist from The Betrayal of Jimmy, Jimmy's Vendetta and Joe's Adventures, from which feel that Jimmy's could have been unreleased. They are basically very arcade like score attack modes with almost zero story and well you get whole story from titles from DLCs first is about betrayal = 2 cutscenes maybe? and likewise vendetta aka revenge with same content, but did like it bit more due unique area at the end at last and for some reason it had achievements.

Joe's Adventures does keep the time and score model, but is more store heavy and includes stuff from main game timeline so it's far more interesting. Also it does add 19 more playboys on top of 50 from original game, scoring a 69! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Overall can recommend base game highly, Joe's Adventures is good too, but both Jimmy DLCs are really meh.

Mafia 2 is a good game with a great story. It has so many flaws that are very frustrating but I think it is worth bearing through them just for the story, which is a classic Italian mob saga set in the 1940s. Empire Bay itself is very beautiful and well designed but I felt they could have done so much more with the open world design, like adding a few fun activities or some side jobs here and there. The vehicle physics combined with the over sensitive police system makes for some very rage inducing segments, especially timed missions and car chases. There is a lot of attention to detail here, but most of it just feels pointless. The checkpoint system is awful, and there is no option of manual saving too. I had quite a few crashes during missions due to some C++ runtime errors.

And the 3 DLCs are atrocious, they are time-score based arcade missions with no story at all and feel very out of place. I would definitely recommend the base game, but don't play it just for the gameplay.
