[p]Every week, we’re spotlighting one of the minds behind the mayhem. You’ll get to learn about folks from both Gearbox and 2K, and how each person who touches the game both influences and is influenced by Borderlands 4. This week, we're talking with Elisabeth Finck, 2K’s Certification Lead:[/p][p]What does an average day look like for a Certification Lead?[/p][p]Elisabeth: As a member of a support team I have my hands in a number of 2K titles at any given time, so generally on most mornings I spend a bit of time jumping between short meetings with the various titles’ QA and Developer groups. Since it isn't realistic for developers to fix every issue found at once, a lot of my time is spent running risk analysis on the issues we find to help developers prioritize what order to address items in. A lot of this also just comes down to talking directly with first party groups, reviewing historical trends, as well as looking through developer documentation and forums in the various first party portals.[/p][p]For me, achieving this goal comes down to collaboration and experience. There isn't just a single person making this call; it's an ongoing discussion, backed up by data from multiple groups, to ultimately decide when something feels ready.[/p][p]
What are the most common issues that come up during cert submission—and how do you help teams avoid them?[/p][p]Elisabeth: Branding is very important to first party groups, so it's fairly common to have issues with display of trademarks, phrasing of controls, or references to competitors. We try to do early consultations, and work closely with our localization teams, so that text can fit within platform requirements before it's ever put into the title. [/p][p]On the other hand, it's also very common to get citations for multiplayer invite functionally. In most games, there are so many more ways to send or receive invites than you would expect, things like: the location of the player when receiving the invite, the current game state, or even the current lobby state can have big differences in functionality under the hood. [/p][p]There are a lot of things that most people don't consider which go into invite systems, like clear error messaging for various scenarios, or keeping game progress intact when moving between modes, which are just as important as getting players into their friend's lobby.[/p][p]
What’s your favorite part of the job that people might not expect?[/p][p]Elisabeth: I like to think of myself as a video game lawyer in a way. We have a set of written laws (the platform requirements) that we need to abide by, but, like real laws, they cannot account for every possible scenario. In many cases, the creative vision of a title doesn't totally fit within the requirements, so one of my favorite parts of the job is having my team help gather information, building my case and our argument to a first party group about why we should be allowed to do something the way we want to do it. Sometimes we still get denied and end up having to alter some of the design, but there is nothing better than winning our debate and getting to tell our developers they are free to implement things the way they originally designed.[/p][p]
