Italy was the first country to use aircraft in combat, which occurred in 1911 during the Italo-Turkish War. Despite this, an official separate air force was created on March 26th 1923. During World War II, the Italian Air Force had more than 3,000 aircraft that took part in combat operations in North Africa, the USSR and Italy itself. The modern Italian Air Force comprises of more than 500 aircraft, almost 100 of which are Eurofighter Typhoons.
